Lorenz smiles to Sasha. "He seems to be making himself right at home!" At the top of the stairs, however, he looks around uncertainly for the innkeep. "Hmmm. Perhaps we went the wrong way," he says, feeling like an intruder and a filthy one at that, even though he'd just been in the ocean the day before.
Hmm, Lorenz and Sasha are alone upstairs with lots of empty bedrooms, while the rest of us are downstairs talking to an overly-hospitable half-orc. If he can't figure out this move, he deserves to end up with Gelik. ;)

The thought had crossed my mind but Lorenz isn't Goldilocks...he's not just going to randomly choose a bedroom and hope that it fits just right. Now if there was just a sign leading to the baths he could always offer to help scrub her back...
Then again, it could work out really badly for Lorenz. She does have that Red Mantis tattoo, and we only have her word for it that she's not an assassin. I don't anyone's ever Sense Motived her, and the one time Douena learned detect evil, she wasn't along for the trip....
Yeah, but perhaps he'd die happy! Besides, who would want to waste money and time to kill Lorenz?

You know, if he doesn't make a move before too long, Douena's going to have to take charge of prodding this romance along, with all her typical tact and subtlety. Is that what he wants??

Loot List v2.0
3500 cp
2000 sp
1350 gp
50 pp
silk pouch of garnets and amethysts (total value: 500 gp)
buckler +1 1300GP
watertight mithral scroll tube (value 500 gp)
ring of swimming Lorenz
incense of meditation Makoa
card from deck of illusions (peryton) Gelik
candle of truth 2500GP
Ring of Mind Shielding 8000GP
Assumptions:
- after several days I've successfully identified the magic buckler.
- it is a +1 buckler.
- no one wants any of the items on the list above
- Gelik gets the card from the deck of illusions so I didn't have to work out how much one card was worth
- we sell all remaining items at half value
- added the ring of mind shielding back in (which really upped our total).
After that we have 14885GP. Divided among 11 people (5 current PCs, 5 NPCs, and Aakif) that comes to 1350GP each and 35GP to go towards room and board for several days.

Navior, you didn't respond to my last spoiler.
What keeps it in my head is that is makes 'sense' for a sorcerer to use a less sophisticated system than the normal one. The Words of Power reflect that.
From what I've figured so far many of the more sophisticated or complicated spells can't be emulated with it.
- Color Spray: can't copy the stacked effects nor the effect even if saved against
- Magic Missile: can't copy the auto hit, must put in extra umph for the range
- Fireball: smaller radius without increasing spell level
- Overland Flight: can't copy the duration
- Black Tentacles: can't do it
It is good for blasting, though, and I do admit to being a blaster.
- Touch attack: damage a single foe in melee or at range with an energy type
- Radius: Reflex save v an energy type in a 10'r
- Power Word X: only appropriate for a system called Words of Power
They decided to keep the interaction between the two systems very simple. Even though one is either a spell caster or a word caster, there is no differentiating in what items one could use. I could still use a scroll, wand, or metamagic rod as normal. In item creation, I would need to be able to emulate a spell or it would count against me.

My apologies. I did read it. Then I wanted to take some time to think about it, and then I completely forgot. Sorry.
However, my reservation remains adding in and learning yet another new subsystem. If I hadn't stretched my available time to the limit, I might go for it, but as it is, I'm going to have to say no.

Speciesist. ;P
And a loophole Douena can totally exploit....
Wander Weir |
"The next time you do something 'in my interest,' why don't you find out if it's something I want first?" Douena cries, tossing her roll down on the table uneaten. "And I don't want to be part of any club that has him as a member! And I'm sorry I ever fixed your old hat!" She bursts into tears and runs upstairs.
Boy, Douena reminds me of my little sister when we were kids.

Grrrr. *glares at Gelik*
Btw, did Ishirou have a boon that I forgot about, or did we find his treasure too late to make use of it?
Ishirou does have a boon and he'll be offering to teach it soon. He probably should have taught it during the few days we skimmed over while you waited for the ship to arrive, but I momentarily forgot about it since you found the treasure so late.
Hmmm... Now that I think about it, it wouldn't be problematic to retroactively say that he taught it during that time. To those who are interested, he can teach some of his swordfighting techniques and tricks. These tricks grant a +1 bonus to CMB and CMD when wielding any kind of sword or dagger.

Well he's just talking about the Pathfinders. He's keeping his thoughts about Douena to himself. :)

Bah. So if someone were casting aspersions on, say, Sasha's character in a public tavern, he'd just keep his thoughts on that to himself, too.
Douena is willing to subject herself to a know alignment spell. Is Gelik?

Well it's not as if he's evil, or that he's calling Douena evil.

That's an odd little bonus. There are very few combat maneuvers in which a sword or dagger even come into play (Errol-Flynn/Princess-Bride-style disarming aside). A PC can Bullrush somebody, causing no damage, because he's holding a blade? And grappling takes two free hands to do it well.
Of course, Douena's mostly going to be concerned with avoiding getting maneuvered....

I would rule that the bonus only applies to manoeuvres that you can normally do with a weapon (and gain associated feat bonuses, enhancement bonuses, etc.), such as trip, disarm, and sunder. It wouldn't apply to bull rush or grapple.
Wander Weir |
Hmm, it's going to be a little tricky to remember all that. It's too bad that the NPC bonuses are so uneven at times. Sasha's flat out Initiative bonus is the only one that's really all that easy to apply.
I'll just have to add a few extra lines to the character sheet. If nothing else, the CMD bonus will at least be fairly handy.
Joana |
Dax, do you have a list of the scrolls we found, or do I need to go back through the thread and find them? I know there's the raise dead that was too late for Aerys, and Ieana had some cleric scrolls as well....
EDIT: All right, I found them: divination, restoration, augury x2, comprehend languages, cure moderate x2, find traps, lesser restoration x2, remove disease. Does Makoa want any of them?

"It would be in his best interest to try to get on my good side, but I don't feel any need to actually ask him if it's something he would like to do, do you? I think he wants to buy me a tiara. My sister wore one when she married my brother-in-law who runs the inn."
And people are surprised that Lorenz doesn't like Douena that much? Sneaky little thief! :)
Joana |
Hey, it's not about the theft; it's about the revenge! She has her own money to spend if it was just about getting a tiara.
She fully intends to tell him what he bought her and how much he spent. She just wants him to feel a small fraction of the sucker-punch she felt when he announced that he gave away her secrets.
(And she eventually intends to find out whether he claimed he actually had any part in the discovery -- which he didn't. He had a chance to lay a small claim to credit if he'd made the Knowledge (geography) roll -- which he failed.)
EDIT: Imagine there had been a reward for killing the cannibal chief. And imagine one of the NPCs -- say, Ishirou -- knew about it. And imagine that Ishirou's first action back in civilization was to go to the authorities and claim the reward for killing the cannibal leader. And then imagine he spent the money on, say, buying a fencing academy and came back to Lorenz (the one who actually killed the cannibal leader) and announced that he had collected and spent the reward, but he would extend an invitation to Lorenz to be on staff at his new academy if Lorenz was interested in the position. Don't you think Lorenz would have the right to be a bit miffed?
Except at least Ishirou was part of the general encounter against the cannibals instead of sitting back at camp. :P
Wander Weir |
Sure Lorenz would be right to be angry if something like had been done. I just don't think that what Gelik did amounts to that. Or at least, Lorenz doesn't think so. I imagine if it came down to it, Gelik would be fine with telling the Pathfinders that he was only part of a group who discovered the information about Saventh-Yhi. The thing is, if he's going to be part of an organization that deals in the discovery of knowledge, it'd be wrong for him not to tell them about what we found. So far, the only one who is saying that Gelik gets all the claim to the discovery is Douena.
Of course, if we go to the Pathfinders and find that Gelik did, in fact, claim to be solely responsible for the discovery then Lorenz is going to be very, very disappointed in his friend.
Joana |
See, Lorenz does things. He killed the cannibal chieftan. He's Beastslayer. What did Douena accomplish while they were on the island? Well, she rolled 2 30-somethings to disarm magical traps that probably could have been nasty, but since she succeeded, nothing happened. It's only flashy when a rogue fails; when she succeeds, no one notices. The only thing she did that no one else could have done was decipher those inscriptions, and now she's getting no recognition for that, either. The NPC she likes least took the one thing she did to advance the plot and used it for his own benefit.
It wouldn't have killed Gelik to discuss with the group what we wanted to do with the information and whether we wanted to get the Pathfinders involved before he just acted unilaterally. His option most likely would have carried the vote, but he was too arrogant and self-centered to do us the courtesy of acting like our input mattered. Which is fine. He's an NPC, and I very much doubt the word "Good" is anywhere in his alignment. What's annoying Douena is that Lorenz doesn't think Gelik behaved at all badly. If Douena had gone off and made a unilateral decision on behalf of the group, I doubt Lorenz would be as pleased.
Wander Weir |
I get what you're saying, Joana and I'm not disagreeing. Gelik definitely acted inappropriately. Lorenz probably would have been a lot more sympathetic to Douena's cause if she hadn't reacted so vehemently and if the others hadn't acted so quickly to attack Gelik. Having spent his entire life as the underdog, Lorenz is simply inclined to support anyone else who's put in a similar position.
I'm looking forward to seeing how the meeting with the Pathfinders go.

I as a player don't think he did anything wrong. Gelik is a Pathfinder. He did what he was supposed to do when he found out about the lost city and went to his group to fund and organize an expedition. He didn't claim singular credit because if he did, he would not have come to us with the information of what he did. So far, out of game, Gelik just does not look like a bad guy to me.
