Gilfroy Fezziwig |
Well, I could have Gilfroy cast an obscuring mist to allow them to regroup, but unfortunately, the party's formation isnt' that bad and they aren't being surrounded, so it's not something he'd think of.
Gilfroy aims his crossbow up at the goblin in the doorway and looses.
Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
His bolt sails up, up, and away, over the buildings and into the marsh beyond.
Navior |
Chuffy doesn't actually get the sneak attack as goblin #8 is 5 feet up on the walkway, so they're not technically flanking. So, he does 4 points less damage. However, combined with the other damage Malan has taken this combat, it's still enough to take him down. I believe that puts him at -4.
As Gilfroy shoots a crossbow bolt off into the wide blue yonder, the sneaky goblin comes out from under the building and delivers a savage blow to Malan. The elf collapses.
Malan stabilization check: 1d20 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 1 - 4 = 3 -- fail
1 more point of damage.
Next Up: Corinna, Walthus, Blue Rajah, Melon, Aago, Goblins, Gilfroy, Chuffy, Malan (unconscious).
Corinna Valdemar |
Behind the wooden palisade, Corinna forces herself to take long, deep breaths to calm herself down as her fingers fumble a bolt into her crossbow. Her weapon loaded, she gulps and then steps back out into the open, ready to fire. What she sees, however, terrifies her. Shalelu's apprentice is lying on the ground in a heap, a goblin near him waving a bloody blade gleefully. Everything has obviously gone horribly wrong. It was all a clever plan by the goblins to ambush them. I didn't think goblins were that clever. "Young man," she calls out to the Blue Rajah, "step out of the way." Her arms trembling, she tries to aim at the goblin on the far side of the pit and holds her fingers over the trigger to release the bolt as soon as she has a clear shot. They have to hold the goblins off long enough for everyone to get out!
Load crossbow; 5-foot-step to L 65; Ready action to shoot Chuffy when Rajah steps out of the way: Attack 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12 damage 1d8 ⇒ 3
EDIT: Extra -4 if Chuffy's in melee at the time, but with a 12, it doesn't matter anyway.
Aago Belwas |
Given the change in situation, I've presumed that Aago would continue a bit farther and have moved him to P 66 instead of O 66. Also, even going around the pit, that comes to exactly 30 ft of movement, so he can still attack at the end of it. I'll presume that's what he does.Aago unarmed strike at #4: 1d20 + 3 + 1 -- hit
Damage: 1d6 + 3Aago moves around the pit and comes at #4. With a quick strike, the goblin ends up face-first in the dirt.
Given the way that worked out, I'm definitely happy with the revision. I wasn't sure about the movement around the pit so I erred on the side of caution. Thanks, Navior.
"More of them? It's like we stepped in a bee hive. A particularly stinky one."

Walthus steps under the walkway, setting up a flank with Aago (5-ft step to R 64, under goblin #8) and then attacks.
Walthus handaxe at goblin #5, favoured enemy, flanking: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 4 + 2 + 1 + 2 = 20 -- hit
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
The axe lands in the goblin's chest. The goblin collapses in a pool of blood.
Next Up: Blue Rajah, Melon, Aago, Goblins, Gilfroy, Malan, Corinna (subject to readied action), Walthus.
"The Blue Rajah" |
Seeing Malan bleeding to death, Rajah moves around the pit and past Melon in an attempt to help him. "Excuse me, love." He says as he moves past her to Malan. Seeing the hideous goblin standing right next to him, "Excuse me." He tells it as he bends down and lays a healing hand upon Malan.
(Standard)Rebuke death: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Move to P 63
Navior |
Rajah moves rather nonchalantly round the pit and up to the unconscious Malan. As soon as he's clear of Corinna's path, she looses her crossbow bolt at the ugly goblin, but it flies too far to the right and misses. Rajah passes Melon and then politely leans over and exposes himself to attack from the ugly (and perhaps somewhat surprised) goblin that is now standing right beside him.
Next Up: Attack of Opportunity from Chuffy, Melon, Aago, Goblins, Gilfroy, Chuffy, Malan, Walthus, Corinna, Blue Rajah.
Navior |
CORRECTION!
Rajah's action does not attract an attack of opportunity. Chuffy is simply too surprised by Rajah's boldness to be able to get in an attack. :)
Rajah successfully heals Malan. He is now stable at -1 hp.

I'm not entirely sure I understand the set-up of the map. The goblins are on a walkway above us, right? How high up is that? Is there a way up there that Aago can see? Or should he just try a jump and climb?
The walkways are 5 ft up, so people on the ground have reach into them and vice versa. There are ladders up to the walkways and buildings at various points indicated on the map (although the ladder at Q66, just south of Aago, is obscured by the goblin token; however, it's still there and in place). These ladders can be used to climb onto the walkways without needing to make any checks, but cost an extra 5 ft of movement. You can get onto the walkways from any other location by using Acrobatics (DC 10) or Climb (DC 5) at standard movement penalties (1/2 speed for Acrobatics; 1/4 speed for Climb unless you take a -5 penalty to the roll, in which case it's half speed).
You can go under walkways (and under buildings), but Medium creatures must squeeze in order to do so. Small creatures suffer no penalties for going under walkways.Melon steps over Malan and, with a single strike, sends the ugly goblin sprawling.
Next Up: Aago, Goblins, Gilfroy, Malan, Walthus, Corinna, Blue Rajah, Melon.
Aago Belwas |
Thanks for the explanation. That makes it all a lot easier.
Aago glances at the goblins on the walkway and steps over to climb up.
Move to Q66. Climb up: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
Once up on the walkway, he steps up to the nearest goblin and punches at it with one fist. Unfortunately, his feet were slippery with blood after stepping over a goblin body and he almost looses his footing with the strike, missing entirely.
Move to R66 and attack 08: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 1 = 7
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Navior |
Aago easily makes it onto the walkway, but his near slip means he misses the goblin. That goblin laughs at him and attacks with his dogslicer, as do the other goblins, #9 reaching over the edge of the walkway to attack Melon.
Goblin #7 doglsicer at Aago: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14 -- hit
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Goblin #8 doglsicer at Aago: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16 -- hit
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Total damage to Aago: 4
Goblin #9 doglsicer at Melon, height advantage: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 2 + 1 = 19 -- hit
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
All three goblins' weapons successfully finding their targets. #8 sticks out his tongue at Aago.
Next Up: Gilfroy, Malan, Walthus, Corinna, Blue Rajah, Melon, Aago, Goblins.
Gilfroy Fezziwig |
Gil takes a 5-foot step to M64, reloads, and fires his crossbow at Goblin 8.
Attack: 1d20 - 4 ⇒ (9) - 4 = 5
On a one it lodges in a building, a two it sails after its friend into the swamp. 1d2 ⇒ 2
"Dammit! If I lit them on fire, at least it would look like fireworks!! Stupid, worthless, piece of junk crossbow!!"
Navior |
While Gilfroy's crossbow bolt flies off into the distance, Walthus hurries along under the walkway past the goblins. He then comes out (at Q 61), jumps up, grabbing the edge of the walkway, flips onto it.
Walthus Acrobatics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Next Up: Corinna, Blue Rajah, Melon, Aago, Goblins, Gilfroy, Malan (unconscious), Walthus.
Corinna Valdemar |
Corinna steps forward, fitting another bolt into her crossbow and firing at one of the goblins on the walkway. "Please," she calls to the others, "shouldn't we be beating a tactical retreat? This place is swarming with the awful little things!"
Move action: load crossbow; 5-foot-step to M 65; ready action to attack next goblin that reaches the ground 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 1 = 7 Damage 1d8 ⇒ 4 Hopefully none of them do this round, so I don't waste another bolt. :P
Melon Sash |
"What? And deprive Gilfroy of rainbow hued hair tomorrow morning?" Melon calls out as she dodges another attack, "I don't mind staying here a bit longer, we're outnumbering these three that we see here, at least." She brushes her hand through her face and looks at the red, her blood, on it. "Dammit! Not the face!"
"The Blue Rajah" |
"Just hold on a bit longer, love." He tells Melon as he heals Malan once again.
Rebuke death: (2/6) 1d4 ⇒ 3
Hm. Malan waking up with Melon standing over him. Should be an "interesting" visual. :)
Aago Belwas |
Actually, Navior, with his Snapping Turtle style, Aago would be able to deflect that first hit, though still taking the greater damage from the other.
Aago grins, even as he winces at the cut he takes from one of the goblins. "Retreat? We've only just started fighting!"
Balling the fist of his right hand while he keeps his left arm ready to deflect attacks, he strikes the goblin hard in the ribs.
Attack Goblin 08: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 3 + 1 = 17
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
AC is currently 15.
Navior |
Actually, Navior, with his Snapping Turtle style, Aago would be able to deflect that first hit, though still taking the greater damage from the other.
Ah right, it would. Although technically, I don't think you ever stated you were activating Snapping Turtle Style (which takes a swift action). However, we'll let that go. The first hit misses and I'll add Snapping Turtle to the active effects. :)
IMPORTANT REQUEST: As I think of it now, I've noticed some other GMs on the boards like PCs to list their current AC and hp with each post during combat. I can see how that can be really helpful, so if people don't mind, I'd like to ask everyone to start doing that here (and in Serpent's Skull). However, with all due respect to Lorekeeper, I'd like to ask that you don't include initiative number. I only use the initiative numbers to set up the initial order. Since that order can then frequently change due to readied and delayed actions, the numbers just become confusing after that. :)
Thanks, all!
Corinna moves forward and prepares to fire her crossbow again, while Rajah heals Malan once more (bringing him to positive hp). The elf awakens groggily to see Melon standing over top of him.

Melon steps off Malan and attacks the goblin on the walkway above. Unfortunately, the walkway itself gets in the way, preventing her from causing any damage.
Next Up: Aago, Goblins, Gilfroy, Malan, Walthus, Corinna (subject to readied action), Blue Rajah, Melon.
Map Updated
The blue circle around Malan indicates that he is prone.

I might be getting which action goes with which round mixed up, but I think Aago posted his action for this round out of order yesterday, four posts up.
Yes, he did, and I totally forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder! :)
Aago strikes at the goblin beside him. There's a sickening crack as the goblin's ribs break. With a whimper the goblin falls over.
Goblin #9, looking a little panicked moves up to Walthus (5-ft step to R 62) and attacks, while #7 attacks Aago.
Goblin #7 dogslicer at Aago: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19 -- hit
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Goblin #9 dogslicer at Walthus: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19 -- hit
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
#9 yells joyously when his weapon finds its mark. #7 snickers at the small amount of blood drawn from Aago's new wound. He then closes the door of the hut in Aago's face.
Next Up: Gilfroy, Malan, Walthus, Corinna (subject to readied action), Blue Rajah, Melon, Aago, Goblins.
Gilfroy Fezziwig |
Gilfroy moves to P62, grimacing with distaste as he straddles the putrid goblin. He reaches down and touches Malan, healing him further of his injuries.
Cure light wounds: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Navior |
Malan makes sure he has his weapon as he stands. "Thank you so very much for your aid." He says as he moves to the ladder.
Which ladder? There's a ladder at Q 66 that goes into the hut at Q 67 (that door is currently open). There's another ladder at P 59; that one goes to the walkway at P 58. However, there is no ladder going directly onto the walkway just south of Malan.
Navior |
I meant the one at P59
Righto!
Gilfroy moves up and heals Malan further, closing over the remainder of his wounds. The elf then gets up and moves towards the ladder to the west and up it.
Walthus handaxe at #9, favoured enemy: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 4 + 2 + 1 = 15 -- miss
Walthus swings at the goblin in front of him, but it ducks aside.
Next Up: Corinna, Blue Rajah, Melon, Aago, Goblins, Gilfroy, Malan, Walthus.
Corinna Valdemar |
Corinna's face turns a little paler as she sees Malan move toward another door to one of the goblin huts. "We're really going to do this, are we?" she asks under her breath. "Stir up the hornet's nest?" She shifts her attention to the walkway Malan is on and waits with trepidation to see what will happen when he opens the door.
Delay for now.
Melon Sash |
Round 7
AC 18; HP 8/10
Melon tries to climb up stage, but is having some difficulty, "Stupid goblin corpse, get out of the way." She does manage in the end and takes advantage of the halfling distracting the goblin by smacking him on the back of the neck with the open palm of her hand.
Climb 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Attack 1d20 + 4 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 4 - 2 + 2 = 20 damage 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

Malan |
Malan opens the door and ... (what he does depends on what he sees)
He would like to go to the next door and open it to get out onto the walkway.

If there are goblins inside and not in his reach, he'll wait until they come in reach and attack.

Aago opens the door beside him to find #7 still standing there.
Aago unarmed strike at #7: 1d20 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 2 + 1 = 13 -- miss
He strikes at the startled goblin, but the goblin's own surprise causes it to jump back at just the right moment. The goblin then slams the door shut again, laughing maniacally.
The remaining goblin, panicked, looks back and forth between Walthus and Melon, then jumps off the walkway to the south and tries to make a run for it. Walthus swings his axe.
Walthus handaxe AoO at #9, favoured enemy: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 4 + 2 + 1 = 21 -- hit
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
He buries the axe in the goblin's back just as it's jumping off the walkway. The goblin falls to the ground.
Next Up: Gilfroy, Malan, Walthus, Corinna (subject to delayed action), Blue Rajah (subject to delayed action), Melon, Aago, Goblins.
Gilfroy Fezziwig |
Gilfroy dashes across the mud and makes a mighty leap to flip himself up onto the walkway in imitation of Walthus.
Acrobatics: 1d20 ⇒ 5
And he makes it part way up, slams his face into the railing and tumbles back down landing splat in the mud and other filth. He picks himself up, looking truly wild with muddy white hair and blood pouring from his nose.
Ends up in Q64.
Navior |
As Gilfroy does a tumble in the mud, Malan opens the door of the hut he is by and steps inside. It's a small, single-room hut with a couple windows looking out over the swamp to the west. There is another door in the south wall. Malan crosses to it.
Outside, Walthus calls out, "We've got them on the run! I don't think there can be that many more of them." He moves to the door at R 60 and opens it. "One more in here!"
Next Up: Corinna, Blue Rajah (subject to delayed action), Melon, Aago, Goblins, Gilfroy, Malan, Walthus.
