In the famous words of Meatwad: "Do what now?"

Once Dara has rejoined the others, Fredrik gets a gleam in his eyes. "So, now we know how to bypass the face, but I do not want to proceed further without finding those everburning torches. We should see if there are any unexplored chambers below us, and maybe there is a cache of these torches hidden."

Dara Hellhammer wrote:

"You got caught in the light show, there, Dara. Though it does indeed seem like we know how to get in. Freddy wants to talk strategy from here, though."

So if we go down... which rabbit hole do we choose?

Well, the only cylinder that we have not looked at is the yellow cylinder, if there is anything else down here, then that is where we need to go." He looks at the group, "So, how did you want to tackle this, send the ladies down there, or do you think Bear would be a better choice?"

Dara gives a big yawn and says, "I don't mind goin' down..."

Fred starts to reply, "Well, that is good, so who do you want to..." then gives a double take, and stares at her for a moment, then shakes his head, muttering, "Umm yeah, whatever.". He finishes, "You can take whoever you want with you." He keeps his facial expression neutral after that.

UU snorts, seeing where Flash's thoughts were going. "I think I should go with Dara. Neither of us needs light to see... and for that initial drop, we don't want to advertise our presence until we know we are safe."

"Yeah, Legs and I should be good in the dark. Better than that damn light from up there!" She hikes her thumb towards the ledge in the ceiling indication the disco hallway.

"Well, here, at least take this." He utters a single power word, and the same rock from before lights up in his hand once again. He then pulls out a rag from his pocket and wraps it up. "Ya never know when a spot'a light might come in handy." His eyes cut over to Udaya for only the briefest of moments and he mutters, "and take care, for cryin' out loud. It's gonna be mighty hard to get down there to save your bacon if things get hairy."

Bear wrote:
"It's gonna be mighty hard to get down there to save your bacon if things get hairy."

Dara takes the rock and clenches it in her fist to conceal its light. She mutters, "Now there's two words ya never wanna hear together: hairy bacon."

More loudly she says, "Ready UU?"

Bear once again turns the sarcophagus so that it is pointing at the yellow lantern. A moment later, the cylinder slides up and the doors open. Dara and Udaya remove the wolf corpse from inside, and then squeeze in together. As soon as they do so, the doors close, and the cylinder begins to descend.

It's very cramped inside. The two of them are pressed up against each other and the sides of the cylinder making movement difficult. They can't help but think that if something is waiting to attack them the moment the doors open, they won't be able to defend themselves or fight back.

The descent is over in a matter of seconds, though, the door opens, and nothing attacks them. They are able to step out of the cylinder without harm.

They find themselves in a room with walls covered in bas-relief images similar to the slender figure on the sarcophagus lid in the chamber above. Nearly a dozen androgynous, hairless humanoids stand in poses of deference, almost as if they are paying homage to the viewer. Many extend their hands in adoration, their faces awash in adulation. Several of the statues lack hands, arms heads, or anything else easily hacked off by long-absent tomb robbers.

Along the south wall, an immense stone block has been placed in front of an elaborately carved archway, blocking whatever passage lies beyond.

Dara Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11 +2 stone = 13
Udaya Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14

There would appear to be a small gap between the top of the stone block and the top of the archway. If you were to climb up, it might allow you to see beyond the block. You might even be able to squeeze through it.

New Map Cairn5 added to site. Note: North is to the left on this map.

Dara and Udaya also notice a small button inset into the wall near the cylinder.

Just mere seconds after they step out of the cylinder, the doors slide shut and the cylinder rises into the ceiling above. Looking up, they can see the bottom of the cylinder rising up a long shaft.

In the chamber above, Bear, Fredrik, and Venedictus see the cylinder return. The doors open to reveal no sign of Dara and Udaya.

"So, ummm guys, how long should we wait for the ladies to return?"

UU watches the lift ascend and says quietly, "This is some amazing engineering." She looks around the room, unwilling to touch anything yet. "Whaddaya think? Should we hit the button and see if the cylinder comes on command? If it does, we could send a note up and have some of the guys come down. Or try to sniff out what might be beyond this big slab before we risk a light and more company?"

"Yeah, let's send the boys a note. Be good to know if we got an escape plan."

Somewhat tentatively, UU pushes the button then jumps back, hoping this isn't some elaborate trap.

Up above, the guys watch as the cylinder doors close again just a short time after its arrival and it descends once more into the ground.

Down below, Dara and Udaya soon see the cylinder coming back down the shaft. It settles back down in the room and the doors slide open again.

UU breathes a sigh of relief. Having no paper, she chooses to write a message with her finger in the wolf's blood on the floor. It reads:

:) We're alive. A buttons controls the cylinder. In a small room

She hesitates, "What else should I write? Do we want to bring them down?"

"Sure, you do that, I'll start lookin' fer traps..."

Perception 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23 +2 vs Stone

Dara quite quickly locates a trap. The stone block blocking the exit is resting on a pressure plate. Moving the block out of the way will activate the trap. A quick check nearby reveals valves in the mouths of the adoring bas-reliefs on the walls. It would appear to be some kind of gas trap.

Udaya finishes her message and steps back. The cylinder takes longer to react this time, but after about half a minute or so, the doors slide closed and it rises back up the shaft again.

Fredrik sighs in relief, "That's good news. So it should be safe for all of us to descend in the cylinder?"

"Yah, but it's movin' slowly. Why don't you two squeeze in there together. I'll follow down when and if it comes back up. I'd like to minimize the number of trips this thing has to make, and I'd hate to permanently split us up."

Fredrik nods at Bear, "OK, we will send it back up once we get down there." He pulls Venedictus into the cylinder and waits for it to descend to the bottom.

Fred and Venedictus squeeze into the cylinder, and the doors slide shut. It then descends into the depths. It's an uncomfortable journey, but thankfully short. The doors open again at the bottom and the two stumble out into the darkness. Udaya can reveal the light stone Bear gave her and provide the two with light to see by.

A few seconds after they exit the cylinder, the doors close again, and it ascends back up to the top.

Bear sees it return. When the doors open, he steps in and gets to be the only one to ride in comfort. :)

Bears soon arrives at the bottom. A few seconds after he exits the cylinder, it once again returns up the shaft.

When Bear steps from the cylinder an odd look crosses his face, "Ya know, this was strangely like a dream I had last night." He points at Udaya, "... and you were there..." then at Dara, "... and you were there. Though there was a decidedly smaller amount of clothes in the dream."

Fredrik is glad the dim light is hiding his blush. Resisting the urge to comment on Bear's innuendo and her response, he instead says to Udaya, "Can you bring that light a little closer, I want to examine this bas relief a little closer."

This will give Bear and UU a few more shadows to play around in, he he.

UU rises to take the bait. "Oh yeah? Is this the dream where I ride you like a stallion all night long? No? Hmmm... Guess we didn't have the same dream then." She turns back to illuminating the bas relief for Flash.

"Damn... suddenly my dream looks so boring. So, what do you think the actual purpose of this room is?"

"I don't know what it is for... but it sure is creepy."

Go to active radar.

Bear falls back to his go-to move and begins walking around the room with Detect Magic up.

Bear detects no magic (apart form what the party is already carrying).

Udaya watches Bear stalk the room, "Find anything there, Big Man?"

Fredrik mutters to himself as he looks at the bas reflief sculptures, "This is fascinating! I wonder if these people are Wind Dukes, or whether they were a subjugated race, so many questions!"

He glances over at Udaya checking on the prgress of Bear, who is concentraing for magical auras. "Well, at least someone is having a good time."

"Dara, can we get this block out of the way, I bet there are some answers on the other side"

Anything I can determine from the sculptures, Navior?

"Might be a problem with that Freddie. That block's on a pressure plate. Look in the mouths of the guys on the walls. Those are gas valves. We move the block an' we get gassed."

"Still, there's a gap at the top o' the stone. If ya boost me up there, I might be able to crawl thru an' have a look on the other side..."

"Ok, Dara, sounds like a plan." He looks over to Udaya who is currently stalking Bear, "Do either of you two...want to help Dara up there?"

"I better do it. Bear gets all kinds of 'handsy' after having them erotic dreams." She gives the big man a wink and helps Dara up on the stone. "Shorty, you sure additional weight on this thing won't set the trap off?"

Dara is confident that extra weight won't set off the trap. It's the removal of weight that sets it off.

With Udaya's help, Dara climbs up on top of the block. The gap is thin, but she can get a look at what lies beyond. She can see a ten-foot-wide passage. Curious carvings that seem to represent a stirring tempest cover the walls of the passage. Small alcoves flank the passage, and each alcove would appear to contain an statue of an androgynous humanoid figure with cupped hands. The figures are roughly 7 feet tall.

Getting through the opening will be difficult. It will require a DC 25 Escape Artist check, which Dara cannot make (and unfortunately no one else in the party can either).

Fredrik gives Udaya an exaggerated sigh, playing along with her, "Well we all have our various burdens to Bear, he he" He cannot help but snicker at that pun.

"See anything up there, Dara?"

Udaya turns an appraising eye on Frederick. Her eyes go a bit wider, "Nice come-back, Slick!" She chuckles.

Fredrick shoots Bear a glance, feeling kind of sorry for him, but not wanting to embarass him further. He seemed kind of shy, now that he remembered what happened earlier. "Thanks for the compliment, Udaya" he replies a little embarrased in her eyes.

Navior - How far up does the cylinder tunnel go? How heavy do we think this rock is?

UU looks at the situation. "So the trick is to move the rock without getting gassed or whatnot. All we need to do is maybe move this rock like 3' right, just enough to squeeze around it? I'm wondering if that lift is strong enough to pull the stone out of the way. We tie several long pieces of rope to the rock and secure them somehow to the lift. Then the one person down here rides it up and we pray it has the strength to move the rock and doesn't bust the lift.." She fore-stall's Slick's response, "Yeah, it is risky as HELL. I'm just saying 'consider it'. OR, maybe we can rotate this thing enough on the plate to get around it. That's a nice solution."

Udaya Udas wrote:

The cylinder tunnel goes up approximately 60 feet. The rock is clearly heavy, but not impossible to move. It will take a DC 25 Strength check to move. None of you could do it by yourselves, but working together (using aid another), it's possible.

Udaya Udas wrote:

"Zip… not a thing. 'Cept this guy…" and he points to one of the carvings on the wall, " is also jealous of the dream you had about me."

If everyone can successfully aid another and Bear can hit a roll of 13, we can move that rock. So, slightly improbable but far from impossible.

As they discuss different plans for getting around the rock, Bear tests the weight of the stone with his shoulder. "I'm thinkin' we may be able to move this thing if we all push together. Long as everyone understands that we're trying to shift it.. not remove it from the plate. I'm also a little concerned 'bout getting stuck in that room with a difficult way out."

If everyone agrees with trying to shift the rock, however, he plants himself in the center, waiting for everyone to find a good place from which to support his efforts.

My suggestion… let's give it 6 tries… you guys are just shooting for the DC 10, i'm shooting for a DC 13 at the least… if we can line up enough of a success on any one attempt, it should shift for us.

Strength checks:
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23

DAAAAAAYYYYUUUUMMMM.... nearly hit the DC by myself on one of those!

STR Aid1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22 Disco!
STR Aid1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16 Disco!
STR Aid1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12 Disco!
STR Aid1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16 Disco!
STR Aid1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 Fail :(
STR Aid1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 Fail :(

Looks like #2 will move the rock, based on Bear's '24'

Beargle "Bear" Zstellian wrote:
"'Cept this guy…" and he points to one of the carvings on the wall, " is also jealous of the dream you had about me."

UU gives Bear a languorous smile in response, looking at the carving "Well, then I probably shouldn't tell him the other three-quarters of that dream, then, should I?"

The second try at latest, will shift the rock. There's a good chance you'd manage on the first try, too. At any rate, it doesn't really matter either way.

You manage to make a slight shift in the giant rock. Unfortunately, you discover you can't just push it side to side, as the pressure plate it's on is pushed down slightly below the level of the floor. You'll either have to tip it (which would take it right off the plate) or get enough leverage to raise on side a little and then push it so that side only comes off the plate.

Either will be possible with a DC 25 Strength check. Bear will just need to get another one of those awesome rolls!

Take 2 on UU to assist rolls...

STR Aid 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 Disco!
STR Aid 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21 Disco!
STR Aid 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16 Disco!
STR Aid 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21 Disco!
STR Aid 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 Fail :(
STR Aid 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 Disco!

Fredrik gives the couple heaving the rock out of the way a smile, tinged with a bit of sadness, knowing acts of muscle were not his forte. "Good job, guys. While the two of you cool off for a moment, or not," noticing the looks she keeps giving Bear. I need to make sure Bear loans me his spellbook before he retires for the evening.

"Let me see if there are any magical auras down this way."

Cast Detect Magic down the corridor.

Str 1 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Str 2 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Str 3 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Str 4 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Str 5 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Str 6 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

"Damn, I just ain't on my game today!"

Fredrik "Flash" Williams wrote:

Bear was quite specific about only wanting to shift the block, not move it, so as not to set off the trap. As such, you still have a big stone block blocking your spell. :)
