Polyglot Nano Who Works Miracles 1

Round 2:

Okay, let's give this a try. I will use effort on my speed roll to defend. That costs me 3 speed pool, if I read correctly.

go speed roller! go speed roller! go speed roller! go!: 1d20 ⇒ 7

Panamax twists in an attempt to catch the staff on the lead pipe he keeps strapped to his upper arm.

"Crow fire," he swears.

...and as his Round 2 action, Panamax plays with a bracelet on his wrist, fiddling with it until it breaks.

let's use a cypher!: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

And a shimmering field snaps into place around him as the bracelet falls to the deck of the ship.

So that is an additional +4 armor for the next hour.

So I am at: Might pool 8 minus however much damage, Speed pool 7, and 18 Intellect pool because the Edge of 1 reduced the cost of the attack (1) by 1 last round. Yes?

"If I have to heal you up after this, it will hurt," Panamax says to Ridgar.

Female Mad Nano who Figures Things Out 1

Round 2:

Sherine does not in fact defend last round's attack, and so takes the 1 point of damage.

"Ow!" remarks Sherine after being smacked with the pirate's staff. She backs up, facing him. She makes a motion like squeezing a melon between her hands, with her hands up at eye level. "That wasn't a smart move, boy-o," she says as she squeezes the space between her palms.

This is Sherine doing an Onslaught mental attack; a "mindslice", if you will. It does 2 points of Intellect damage, and ignores armor. No effort expended this round to decrease the difficulty.

1d20 ⇒ 3

Polyglot Nano Who Works Miracles 1

Jarris:
"It wasn't the science I was wondering about -- more the sensory details. Did it hum? Did your teeth hurt when you got near? What happened if you tried to force through it? That sort of thing. A day's worth of idle thoughts all falling out of my mouth at once."

When he speaks, Panamax doesn't fidget or gesture with his hands. But he does move his head in a jerky fashion (like a bird), and occasionally freezes up entirely when he goes deep into thought.

"Something that amazed or frightened me. Hmmm." This is one of those moments when he freezes entirely.

Restarting a few second later. "After I was missioned from Standifer, everything new amazed and frightened me. They still do."

Another pause. Longer this time. "I was roughly between there and here, and I came to a place that the inhabitants called مکان مرده, which means Dead Place. Nothing grew above ground. No trees. No plants. No grass. Not even that itchy spiny stuff. It felt bad. My teeth hurt and my tongue was dry.

I fell into a ravine and broke my leg when they came across me. It takes some time to heal up from something like that. The people were small and twisted. The better to fit through the cracks in the rock, they said. The better to eat mushrooms and lichen, they said. The better to hide from their God, they said.

They told me that they spored from a fruiting body deep in the rock. They told me that they died on their tenth birthday. They told me their teeth could chew through anything, but they usually couldn't be bothered.

I never saw any of this. I wouldn't eat anything except what food I brought. They mostly talked among themselves, but when I figured out their tongue, they started talking to me and stopped stepping on me."

Panamax freezes again, then looks straight at Jarris. "Before I left, I attempted to heal one of them. I cannot adequately describe what happened next. It was as though they turned inside out and fell away. My entire purpose in leaving Standifer was to seek out and heal, and my healing had abandoned me. That place was hollow and unreachable. This frightened me."

Panamax is looking away now, slightly. "It was almost a relief when I had to run for my life. After I crossed the dividing line back into vegetation, none of the mob would follow me. My healing abilities returned. But I would rather not go back to that dead place."

Round 2

Above Deck

After the mast splinters, Anson draws his hatchet and disappears below deck of the pirate's ship.

"Ow!" remarks Sherine after being smacked with the pirate's staff. She backs up, facing him. She makes a motion like squeezing a melon between her hands, with her hands up at eye level. "That wasn't a smart move, boy-o," she says as she squeezes the space between her palms. The pirate stumbles, shaking his head to try to clear the static in his thoughts.

Panamax:
I believe I need to approach combat slightly differently. For the purposes of this fight, I'm going to say you defend that and take no damage from the attack. I believe all your other pool changes are correct!

Panamax twists in an attempt to catch the staff on the lead pipe he keeps strapped to his upper arm.

"Crow fire," he swears, fiddling with the bracelet on his wrist. As it breaks, a shimmering field drops down around the space he occupies, moving with him on the deck.

"If I have to heal you up after this, it will hurt," Panamax says to Ridgar.

The pirate captain laughs without mirth. "No one who calls himself a healer would do what you've done here today,". He taps a rune on his staff and disappears from the deck of the Icewine.

The pirate with fingers coming out of his face is curled up in the fetal position under the railing, as far from the fight as he can get. He's not moving anymore, but occasionally makes a pitiful noise to let you all know he's still alive.

Tavene swings her sword again, still holding her stomach. 1d20 ⇒ 11 The already wounded pirate drops to the deck, more of her blood pooling and staining the wood beneath her body. She turns to face the pirate Sherine is fighting. "You would do well to follow your boss' lead," He doesn't seem to hear her, as he's pressing his hands to his head and mumbling under his breath.

Belowdeck

Nalo slows for a moment, stopping just in her whip's reach of the pirates. She lets the metal thong of the whip impact the wooden deck of the hold. With less than a moment's effort the metal weapon sizzles with electricity. "It isn't worth it. Whatever your boss is paying you is not worth it. Drop your gear and go."

Kilo:
Giving you a chance to follow Nalo's need and not attack outright while she tries to convince them to leave. If you still want to attack, let me know!

Almost immediately, one of the pirates drops the crate he was carrying. "I 'ernt paid enough for tangling with relicsnatchers." He doesn't even wait for his buddy; he turns around to leave and head back towards the hold of his own ship.

... Where he encounters Anson coming down the stairs, wielding a hatchet. He immediately puts his hands up.

The other pirate snorts and drops the crate, looking a little less like he might give up and leave. He looks between Nalo and Kilo, cracking his knuckles. Ridgar appears behind him, staff runes aglow after he activated them topside. He moves in front of his crew member.

"Your friends have damaged my ship and my crew. Prauss owes me at least half of this shipment, if not more, and I'm not leaving without it."

Nalo/Kilo/Anson observation, difficulty 2:
A tentacle has pierced the bottom of the invisible tube between ships and is slithering towards Ridgar's ankle.

GM:

Ridgar: 8/8 HP
Pirate 1: 2/6 HP, fingers and eyeballs growing out of his face
Pirate 2: 0/6 HP, straight up kilt
Pirate 3: 4/6 HP, mindsliced by Sherine
Pirate 4: 6/6 HP, intimidated by Nalo and trying to flee
Pirate 5: 6/6 HP, slightly less intimidated

Inquisitive Jack who Rides the Lightning

Observation: 1d20 ⇒ 13

Round 3:
...we wants the staff...

Goal - distract Ridger from hopefully Prauss's tentacle and steal his shiny relic-y staff

Nalo lets the charged whip fall onto the deck leaving scorch marks on the deck as it discharges. She times her words to the actions of the tentacle she sees slithering towards Ridgar's ankle, "Now be a reasonable pirate about this. You engaged us, not vis versa, it seems to be that you are lucky to be getting out with just a bit of damage to your ship. Now a reasonable man and you're likely to get out of this..." As the tentacle attacks Nalo darts forward and ????

Disarm?: 1d20 ⇒ 2 Spend one effort. Nalo would like to do this as a Speed manuever, but I could see Might as well. Either way spending the effort. Let me know if I'm downing my Speed another 2 or my Might 3.

hopeful outcome: effortly plucks the staff with glowing runes from the pirates grasp as the tentacle gets him.

.... after seeing that roll - Nalo hopefully distracts him enough that the tentacle does something

Defense, in case it doesn't work: 1d20 ⇒ 5

GM of Many Names

Mana kindly referred me to my previous post where belowdecks pirates already dropped crates and pulled weapons. I apologize for continuity errors as I post at work going forward :D

An Exiled Glaive who Exists In Two Places At Once

Kilo/anyone on the deck the first night:
I think if anyone was on the deck at night they would see the sparring, so I'm updating the spoiler to reflect that

Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 2 lol
Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 8

Tavene and her other both bow their heads. "How did your weapons come to be named?" Tavene readies her sword to parry an attack while the doppelganger lunges behind Kilo to see just how well he defends himself. Both versions of Tavene have easy smiles on their faces; battle seems to make her most comfortable.

Not sure if you actually want to play out a fight here; I'm game to do that if you'd like, otherwise I can fade to black it?

Observation: 1d20 ⇒ 10

Round 3:

Kilo watches the Pirate Captain and his lackey warily with drawn knives, ready to intercept, should either attack himself or Nalo.
Kilo will spend effort if either he or Nalo is attacked

1d20 ⇒ 4

Tavene/anyone on deck the first night:

Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 5
"Named?" Kilo's brow furrows, "I think perhaps you misunderstood. I have not named my weapons. Though I have met a number of people who have. Have you named yours?"
Kilo turns sideways and begins to circle backwards slightly, keeping both opponents within view and ready to dodge or parry an attack from either direction. An easy smile plays across his lips, like her, he seems to prefer combat to the alternative.

Do I roll Defense or wait until attacked?: 1d20 ⇒ 6

client delayed if you saw my previous ooc post here. I would prefer to play it out, if only to get used to how the system works. Thank you for the opportunity! xp

Polyglot Nano Who Works Miracles 1

"That was rude," Panamax says, about Ridgar, to no one in particular.

Round 3:
"I am going to touch you, Tavene. Please do not misinterpret."

Panamax attempts to use Healing Touch on Tavene. He needs to touch her exposed skin.

"If you do not pull your arm away from your stomach, it may hurt as it heals closed."

Intellect task: 1d20 ⇒ 17

restoring 1d6 ⇒ 1 points if successful

Female Mad Nano who Figures Things Out 1

Round 3:

Sherine shifts her posture facing the pirate she mindsliced, holding her arms and hands in the same way as she did when she felled the pirate ship's mast.

"Please don't make me hurt you any more than I have already," she says apologetically.

Almost as an afterthought, she adds a theatrical "Arrgh."

GM: She's prepared to use a physical Onslaught on this pathetic soul, but she won't if he behaves himself. Please use the following die roll if necessary.
1d20 ⇒ 4

Resourceful Seeker who Talks to Machines

Round 3:
"Surrender, and nobody gets hurt," Anson says, brandishing the hatchet. "Of course, I'll be needing some of your cargo, seeing as you've inconvenienced me."

GM of Many Names

Round 3

Above deck

"I am going to touch you, Tavene. Please do not misinterpret." Panamax reaches out slowly, as though he's dealing with a wild animal.

"If you do not pull your arm away from your stomach, it may hurt as it heals closed."

A slow smile creeps onto Tavene's face at Panamax's first comment, but quickly disappears at his addendum. She moves her arm away from her stomach and leaves it hanging at an awkward angle, clearly afraid of the implication. "Thank you," she says as she is healed 1 point. The wound seals up, at least, and without limbs inside!

After this, she pulls a small vial from her pocket, pops the lid off, and consumes the liquid inside. You don't see any evidence that this has done anything, but she stands a little easier and winces less when she moves.

The previously mindsliced pirate takes her suggestion to heart and decides it's no longer in his best interest to continue attacking after watching a companion's face turn into fingers, and dealing with his own severe headache. He keeps his attention on Sherine, but moves backwards to lean against the railing closest to his ship.

1 dead pirate, 1 finger-faced pirate, and another pirate who's done fighting the good fight on deck!

Belowdeck

Anson blocks the pirate lackey's exit. "Surrender, and nobody gets hurt," Anson says, brandishing the hatchet. "Of course, I'll be needing some of your cargo, seeing as you've inconvenienced me." The man gestures to the few crates aboard his ship.

"Take what you want, I 'ernt caring," he offers. It's clear he wants no part of what Anson or his crew are waving around at him.

Kilo watches the Pirate Captain and his lackey warily with drawn knives, ready to intercept, should either attack himself or Nalo.

Now a reasonable man and you're likely to get out of this..."

"I don't know who you think you are, or who you think you're traveling with, but..." Ridgar interrupts Nalo loudly.

Ridgar distracted?: 1d20 ⇒ 12
CHAOS?: 1d20 ⇒ 14

Several things happen at once.

Nalo lunges forward, a blur to normal eyes, and reaches for the staff of runes that Ridgar holds tightly in his hand. Her fingers brush against the smooth wood of the weapon.

Nalo:
Go ahead and take it from speed

Bellarim's tentacle wraps tightly around Ridgar's ankle, jerking him towards the side of the invisible tube between ships.

Ridgar activates a rune on the staff again as half of his body disappears through the numenera force wall. All three of the people making direct or indirect contact with the staff disappear from sight.

Taking advantage of the chaos, the last pirate jumps forward to attack Kilo. He's dropped his weapon, so uses his fists instead. 1d20 ⇒ 20 Oh my. Although Kilo was prepared to defend against the pirate's attack, having his friend and two other people disappear so abruptly throws him off slightly. The pirate's punch catches Kilo's jaw and knocks his head back. 1 damage and Kilo is stunned for the next round.

GM:

Ridgar: 8/8 HP, tentacle wrapped and elsewhere
Pirate 1: 2/6 HP, fingers and eyeballs growing out of his face
Pirate 2: 0/6 HP, straight up kilt
Pirate 3: 4/6 HP, mindsliced by Sherine, sitting down on the deck
Pirate 4: 6/6 HP, intimidated by Nalo AND Anson and trying to flee
Pirate 5: 6/6 HP, foolhardy and punching Kilo

GM of Many Names

Nalo:
For Round 4, you, Bellarim, and Ridgar are back on the deck of his ship. :)

Polyglot Nano Who Works Miracles 1

Round 4:
Panamax moves to the finger-faced pirate.

"If you continue your attack, I will be forced to hurt you again."

I like this Intellect Edge of 1. At least at this point where all my abilities cost only 1 pool, it's very convenient.

Panamax crouches down on his heels and touches the pirate on one of his extra fingers.

Intellect roll: 1d20 ⇒ 14

Healing 1d6 ⇒ 4 fleshwarping damage.

Here are a few different options for you, depending on how you want this to work:

The excess fingers shrivel and blacken. Panamax blows gently on them, and they crumble to dust. The air smells slightly charred. The extra eye on the pirate's chin closes (permanently?), but the lashes remain as though he had Eyelash Beard.

or

The excess fingers meld into the existing fingers. The pirate whimpers as the nails grind together before the excess nails pop off and fall gently to the deck below. The eye on the pirate's chin closes and seems to fall into itself as flesh rolls over the spot to cover.

or

Ripples run under the pirate's skin as bones and sinews strengthen. The pirate is good as new -- with twice the fingers and 50% more eyes. Panamax frowns. "Think of the cat's cradles," he says apologetically.

Or, of course, some other description of your design.

Inquisitive Jack who Rides the Lightning

Round 4:
"Neat trick." Nalo says as she takes note of the new surroundings. Her fingers keep contact with the staff as her other hand sparks with lightning. "I think you owe Prauss Bellarim an apology for the large hole in her boat."

lets stun him with science: 1d20 ⇒ 11 - does 3 points if it lands

Really really trying to keep touching either Ridgar or his staff so he can't keep running away.

Defense: 1d20 ⇒ 4 <- note, if the only way to avoid damage is to let go of Ridgar/his stick then Nalo will take the damage.... which seems a poor decision on my part.

A Fabulous Glint who Makes Something Out Of Nothing

Panamax:
Jarris isn't just hanging on Panamax's words; he's climbing to the top of them and paying such close attention to them that there may as well not even be a world around the two. "There's a reason I talk to people, and it's for tales like that one." He says after a long silence. "And I thank you for sharing it. I believe, when we travel, we trade pieces of ourselves for these stories. You left a little bit of yourself in your attempts to heal the Dead, and in leaving them, you took a little bit of the emptiness back with you." He reaches out and, very briefly, touches Panamax's chest, above his heart. "Stories like that are the reason so many people won't leave their homes. But they're also what drive the rest of us out into the unknown. And I think that I would rather die in a place like the one you saw than to sit in a hut and content myself with plowing a field."

He's stopped gesturing then, and takes another few moments of steady eye contact and silence as he gathers his thoughts. "The trip I mentioned to you isn't one I talk about in depth with strangers. But, after a story like yours, I don't think we can call each other strangers." A quick smile. "And people seldom ask for the sensory. The membrane made no noise, except when it was lifted to allow ships to pass through it. And when it was lifted, it was with the meaty sound of someone carving up Aneen for steak. Ormakal the Mind, however... if you get close enough to him, you feel." He pauses again.

"You feel whatever he wants you to feel. And sometimes, more often, things you don't want to feel. I felt as though someone were singing a lullaby directly to my bones. I vibrated with pleasure, rooted to the spot, ready to drop down to my knees to worship a mechanical god. The air tasted of salt, and I watched a woman gleefully admit to trying to flee Astaria. I say gleefully, but tears streamed down her face. I knew I wasn't actually tasting her tears in the air, but the salt-magic that powers the city is most concentrated around the Mind."

"Cables wrapped her up in an embrace and drained her dry after she professed her sins against him. And although the lullaby had soured, still it vibrated within me, still I felt the unyielding pressure to kneel. I couldn't tell, at that point, whether it was my desire or Ormakal's that caused the tremble in my legs. And that is when I forced myself away, by trying to tell myself that Astaria couldn't be my final destination. That I couldn't worship a machine or taste the tears of his subjects for the rest of my life." He shakes his head.

"For every horrible memory, I have five that send me to sleep with a smile. I hope you can say the same."

An Exiled Glaive who Exists In Two Places At Once

Kilo/anyone on deck the first night:
Tavene, the original, blushes slightly. "I must have misunderstood, yes. I thought... the words, Zanzo-ken? Hajime? I thought these were names." At his question, she smiles, a little shy. "I might have named mine."

"Ugh." The other-Tavene says, sounding disgusted as she lunges forward with her borrowed sword. "Focus!" Original Tavene has the grace to look a little ashamed, and the smile disappears. She swings her own sword in tandem with her doppelganger.

Kilo defends the other-Tavene's attack, but Tavene lands a hit with the flat of her blade against his arm.

I just figured out how to do combat with NPCs. It only took me most of a first combat session. Pfffft. Basically, in each turn, you guys (PCs) will roll an action (attack or whatever else) and a defense. I won't roll NPC attacks anymore, I'll just determine if their standard attack would break through your defense. I feel silly that it took me this long to understand it, but there you go!

And for further explanation, Tavene is just level 1, but has a doppelganger, so I'm setting the difficulty at 3 to get through your defenses. So you need to roll 9 or higher. Since she's not going easy on you :)

Resourceful Seeker who Talks to Machines

Round 4:
Seeing that Kilo has everything in hand, Anson picks up a crate and begins hauling it over to the other ship. "'Scuse me," Anson says to anyone in the way.

Round 4:
1) not quite sure what affects "stunned" has in this system. Will assume you can go "total defense".
2) 1 damage: that's subtracted from the Might Pool, right?
3) I thought I had heard something about "characters make all the rolls". Am assuming you have decided to change that...which is totally fine. Just checking. [ooc]:)

4) Did I use 0 or 2 pts from Speed or Might pool last round?[/ooc]

Kilo covers up in a defensive stance and shakes his head, trying to clear it, "Unh. Good shot." He smiles in anticipation, "Do it again!"
Defense: 1d20 ⇒ 8will spend effort again(?)

Tavene/anyone on deck the first night:
"Sorry, Zanzo-ken is a technique my Grampa told me about. You move so quickly that there appears to be more then one of you. But, hey, I didn't know you had a sister." Kilo grins happily, "Hajime is what he said every time we started a fight. I think it means 'Begin'." Kilo continues to circle."You really shouldn't go easy on me like that. I'll learn a lot quicker if my life is in danger." He suddenly darts forward as 'other Tavene' becomes temporarily impeded by the mast of the ship and strikes Tavene with both fists in rapid succession.
1) he is using the blades in his hands for defense only. Kilo will do a non-lethal attack if there is such in this game.
He also spends effort on his attack. I believe that costs once, but affects both attacks. Let me know if I'm incorrect.
2) His fists as medium weapons normally do 4 damage

Fist1: 1d20 ⇒ 7
Fist2: 1d20 ⇒ 9
Target number is 9 - 1 level from Effort = 6 unless Tavene also uses Effort.
Might Pool: 13-3=10 theoretical 3 damage taken?. (4-1 for Armor)
Speed Pool: 14 expect to spend 4 pts from Speed(?) Pool this round. (2pts Attack, 2pts defense{3-1edge})

Female Mad Nano who Figures Things Out 1

Round 4:

Sherine doesn't let her guard down, but since her adversary is content to lean against the railing non-threateningly she decides to converse with him.

"So, have you found piracy to be a fulfilling line of work?" she asks. "I mean, I like the fashion, but I'm not so sure about the actual career."

Polyglot Nano Who Works Miracles 1

Jarris:
Panamax nods, and smiles. "I also believe we trade pieces of ourselves, and it's why I am here and not there."

Panamax sits quietly while Jarris describes the feelings and the sound and the smells and the taste of being in Astaria and under the sway of Ormakal the Mind.

Jarris wrote:
"For every horrible memory, I have five that send me to sleep with a smile. I hope you can say the same."

"I will be able to say the same," Panamax says. "Of this I am certain."

"And so often the pleasant ones are transient. The light off an unexpected stream. The soft sound of laughter as the wind blows through a field of isingrass. Did you know there is a cheese which is made to be cooked?"

Panamax puts his fingers to his lips, and kisses them. "It tastes fantastic."

GM of Many Names

Round 4

Above Deck

Sherine doesn't let her guard down, but since her adversary is content to lean against the railing non-threateningly she decides to converse with him.

"So, have you found piracy to be a fulfilling line of work?" she asks. "I mean, I like the fashion, but I'm not so sure about the actual career."

The headache appears to have worn off, for the most part, and the pirate looks warily up at Sherine. "I see a lot," he starts, "but not too much. I eat well, I have enough shins to do what I like." He shrugs. "There's a freedom to it."

Panamax moves to the finger-faced pirate. "If you continue your attack, I will be forced to hurt you again." Panamax crouches down on his heels and touches the pirate on one of his extra fingers.

The excess fingers shrivel and blacken. Panamax blows gently on them, and they crumble to dust. The air smells slightly charred. The extra eye on the pirate's chin closes and disappears, leaving a line of eyelashes behind like a tiny beard. He touches his face, looks up at you, and drops to all fours in front of you. He's not saying anything, but you're getting a clear message that he's worshiping at your feet.

Panamax:
Loved the descriptions! You rolled well so I'm going to say the pirate isn't going to get stuck with permanent extra limbs/eyes/anythings. :)

Tavene looks to the deck of the pirate's ship, where three people appear from thin air. She makes her way over, unhurried, as she sees that Ridgar is flanked by two enemies.

Below Deck

Kilo:
Characters do roll dice. I apologize for the wonky combat. For this round, I'll modify the pirate's reaction and say you successfully defended, and it intimidated him out of attacking you again. Additionally I'll use your other defense roll to bolster that. Again, apologies from a baby GM to a veteran gamer.
:)

Unless you have an issue, because of my screw up, I'm going to say you spent 0 from either pool. No lost points for my mistake. And no damage taken. Mulligan round.

Kilo covers up in a defensive stance and shakes his head, trying to clear it, "Unh. Good shot." He smiles in anticipation, "Do it again!"

The pirate is intimidated by the Glaive taking the hit so well; it scares him back towards his ship after a quick glance between Kilo and where Nalo was standing moments before. He scurries out of Anson's way to join his fellow pirate as they give the Seeker as much room as they can.

Seeing that Kilo has everything in hand, Anson picks up a crate and begins hauling it over to the other ship. "'Scuse me," Anson says to anyone in the way. No pirates stop the man from taking his bounty.

Above deck - Ridgar's ship

"Neat trick." Nalo says as she takes note of the new surroundings. Her fingers keep contact with the staff as her other hand sparks with lightning. "I think you owe Prauss Bellarim an apology for the large hole in her boat."

Prauss Bellarim agrees with a cheeky smile; all four of her tentacles are now latched around both arms and legs of the Pirate Captain.

"You Dropsucking wretch," Ridgar growls. It doesn't take much between Bellarim squeezing her tentacles and Nalo's hand lighting up with lightning to encourage him to drop his fancy staff. Right into Nalo's waiting grasp. "You owe me and here you are, robbing me of my weapon, my dignity."

GM:

Ridgar: 8/8 HP, tentacle wrapped and real mad
Pirate 1: 6/6 HP, healed up to normal and worshiping Panamax
Pirate 2: 0/6 HP, still ded
Pirate 3: 4/6 HP, mindsliced by Sherine, sitting down on the deck
Pirate 4: 6/6 HP, intimidated by Nalo AND Anson and trying to flee
Pirate 5: 6/6 HP, intimidated by how well Kilo takes a punch, fleeing

Unless anyone feels otherwise and wants to attack someone, this Encounter is resolved after much confusion on my part. Thank you so much for your patience!

Inquisitive Jack who Rides the Lightning

Barely grounding out the electricity before her fingers tighten around the staff, Nalo twirls it with a smile. "It's closer to banditry than theft," a pause, "actually those are the same thing."

She shakes her head, "The point being you guys attacked the boat first, instead of presenting an argument or a bill to Prauss Bellarim. So now you are losing your spoils."

She looks over at the other deck holding up the staff, "Isn't this thing cool?"

A pause, then she asks the captain, "Do you need any help with him?"

Resourceful Seeker who Talks to Machines

Anson continues to pillage the other pirate hold until it's empty or someone thinks to stop him. When he's finished, he'll crack open the crates and see what's there.

Polyglot Nano Who Works Miracles 1

"Does anyone else want any healing?" Panamax calls out, looking embarrassed about the pirate worshiping at his feet.

"The good kind, I mean."

GM of Many Names

"No, stormcloud, but thank you." Bellarim replies to Nalo's offer. "Ridgar was never the type to come to me with well thought out plans."

Ridgar snorts, squirming slightly as Tavene approaches with rope she's pulled out of a crate on the deck of the Icewine. She ties his arms behind his back, and Bellarim withdraws her tentacles when she's sure he's not about to throw himself overboard.

"You owe me." Is all he says.

"I believe you putting a hole in my craft brings us a lot closer to even than you're giving credit for. Have you a way to undo the damage?"

He refuses to answer, but the pirate at Panamax's feet jerks upright. "If you turn the device off, the wall will return. Just make sure you're on one ship or the other when you do."

In the hold

There aren't many crates in the belly of the pirate's craft, and Anson is able to move all five without any pirates stopping him. The first four contain nothing but spices or cloth. The last crate almost looks empty, but with an eye practiced at searching dark places, Anson spots a tiny silver cube.

"Ah, scaledust!" Jarris pops out of a crate in the Icewine's hold. "I'd know the scent anywhere." He meanders over to sniff at one of the crates and dip a finger into it, bringing grey-green powder to the tip of his tongue. He makes a face. "This is worth a sack of shins in the right port."

A Fabulous Glint who Makes Something Out Of Nothing

Panamax:
Jarris tilts his head and smiles warmly. "Perhaps we'll be lucky on this trip and find some of that cheese. And maybe even a field of isingrass in which to enjoy it." He stretches lean arms over his head and tucks a stray strand of hair behind his ear. "I know of a bakery in a little town down the coast, barely worth naming, but people come from miles around for their bread. Specifically their Risloaf. Even if they can't afford it, they come for the scent of the first loaf being cracked open that day."

He closes his eyes. "It's almost ceremonial. The head baker, he sets the Risloaf down on the counter, and splits the bread open with two clean pulls of a knife." He moves his arms as though cutting the bread himself, eyes still closed. "The bread splits open like a flower, heavily herbed steam billowing out and filling the bakery with a scent that's almost edible itself."

He opens hazel eyes and mimics Panamax's finger kissing with a wink. "Sounds like a perfect match for the cooked cheese, if I haven't missed my mark."

"You sell it, I'll cut you in," Anson says, deftly pocketing the cube.

Either way the answer goes Nalo goes to find out what happened downstairs. And help the more tech savy people with the 'device'.

Rubbing a bruised shin, Nalo presents the staff to the men downstairs. "I know you can teleport when you press this rune."

"Done." Jarris hums as he reseals the opened crates, making a noise of displeasure as he pulls some synthetic material out of one of the crates. He holds the shimmery red dress up to the bright yellow of his vest. "Ugh, who would even wear something like this?" He tosses it back in the crate. "Ridgar must have stolen this from a pleasure yacht. It's my opinion that people who sail around on pleasure yachts make it their business to own ridiculous clothing and waste expensive spices." He seals the crate and pulls his own ridiculous hat from a pocket on his vest and places it on his head.

"Mhm." The pirate mumbles from his face down position on the ship.

Bellarim leads Ridgar back over to the deck of the Icewine, leaving him tied up against the outer wall of the cabin as she tucks her tentacles away and slips back into her coat.

"Let me know if you need any help down there," she says to Nalo. She busies herself with speaking to the other pirates still on the decks.

Inquisitive Jack who Rides the Lightning

"Anson! No wonder I didn't see you above deck." She holds up the staff, pauses. "Wait. Before we figure out the staff," she motions to the underwater passage connecting the holds of the two ships. "There is a machine on the ship that did that. Apparently the holes should go away if we can figure out how to turn it off. After we find it to start with."

Resourceful Seeker who Talks to Machines

Anson nods, hops back over to the enemy ship, and begins to search it again, this time on the hunt for the machine.

An Exiled Glaive who Exists In Two Places At Once

Kilo/Deck:
"Oh, good, I prefer... oof" Tavene starts, caught off guard when she's punched.

I think you're right about Effort just costing once for the action and covering both attacks (since they occur simultaneously). If I find contradicting comments in the rules I'll let you know, but that makes sense to me. Also, when you make attack rolls, can you also make a defense roll so I know what Tavene will have to make to hit you?

She rolls away from the hits, grinning now. "Nice strike." Tavene presses forward and swings her sword towards Kilo, while her doppelganger swings at his exposed back.

Tavene takes 4 damage total, as she doesn't spend Effort this round and both attacks clear the target number. Since she's an NPC, but controlled like a PC, she'll still obey NPC combat rules but her health will be much higher; she's at 32/36 health (drawing from all 3 pools)

GM of Many Names

It doesn't take long for Anson to find the machine that's connecting both ships with a force tube. It's been discarded to the left of the pirate's side of the tube, but hums so hard it rattles Anson's teeth if he picks it up.

Anson:
Let me know what skill you're using and roll for me!

Resourceful Seeker who Talks to Machines

Anson kneels down by it, and cocks his head as he examines it. From the expression on his face, it seems like he goes somewhere else.

GM:
Well, I'm trained in all things machine, so I guess I'll roll that one.

Inquisitive Jack who Rides the Lightning

Nalo gives Anson enough room to work, but is close at hand to 'help' (to watch) while holding Ridgar's staff in her off hand. She moves her jaw twice to pop her ears from the humming of the device.

When Anson 'goes away' she looks, but doesn't break his concentration or connection on the device. Yet.

GM:

Keeping an eye on Anson in case this goes pear shaped

GM of Many Names

The device is about the size of a coconut and shaped similarly. There are cube-shaped slots across the surface of the device and they don't seem to have any pattern or obvious function.

Nalo:
If anything goes pear shaped, I will use your observation roll to decrease difficulty in stepping in with speed to assist. :)

Anson:
The device is giving off a strange odor, like it was something dug up out of an old underground location. The cube slots look like they might accommodate something the size of one of the cubes you found in the crate earlier.

Resourceful Seeker who Talks to Machines

The device shuts off.

GM:
Spending the 1 Intellect Pool

Anson stands up, dusts his hands off. "All right, that's that."

GM of Many Names

The device does shut off, and in that brief few moments before it powers back on again, the tube disappears between ships.

But the holes do not, and a surge of seawater sweeps into the holds of both ships before the force field is restored. The device resumes its loud humming.

Inquisitive Jack who Rides the Lightning

Nalo interposes herself between the onrushing water and Anson and the device, making sure neither is swept out. "Almost!" Her voice is more encouragement than teasing.

She looks a little bit closer at the coconut. Do any of the depressions/slots have something in them?

Then looks around (including in the water) to see if there are any other objects that look like they might match with the slots in the coconut-device.

Any runes or like on the coconut surface?

GM of Many Names

Nalo:
None of the depressions have anything else in them.

The hold appears to be pretty well cleared out after Anson moved the crates, as there wasn't much down there to begin with. A coil of rope, a few scraps of some stiff fabric that may have once been part of a sail. Anything loose was swept backwards in the rush of water, but for your searching, there isn't anything that looks like it would fit in the device.

Anson - Memory, Difficulty 2:
Those depressions you saw in the coconut shaped device look like they could pretty easily accommodate the cube you found in the crate.

Rubbing a bruised shin, Nalo presents the staff to the men downstairs. "I know you can teleport when you press this rune."

Kilo decides the bruised shin is not of much import as Nalo continues on so excitedly.

"Really? Yeah, I saw you disappear. That's pretty cool, Kaikaina." a slight pause, "Have you tried the other runs yet?"
It looks like he may be reaching towards the rod to touch one with a finger..

GM:
Memory: 1d20 ⇒ 12 Do I actually have the right rune that Ridgar touched pre-teleport?

Memory: 1d20 ⇒ 12 Do i know which rune he pushed to make the staff big?

Just how many runes does this thing have? Or things that look like they might do activation stuff?

Observation re Kilo: 1d20 ⇒ 15

Nalo, looking around at the newly crowded storage, almost misses Kilo's poking. She shakes her head, "Nope!"

"But we really need to do something about the hole, I had been thinking planks before the tunnel goes away"

And that would be about the point where she'd notice Anson in the room and end up being directed into the other hold.

GM of Many Names

Nalo:
You do remember which rune triggers a teleport (the very top one), but you don't know which rune he pressed to make the staff big. If you strain real hard, you'd guess it was one of the two in the middle. Additionally, this staff has a string of 8 runes going down the side of it, but with close observation, four of them are ridged and indicate that they activate something.

Tavene/Deck:

Leila, before reading this post, please understand I have only read the Player's Guide once and whatever you decide to do is completely fine with me.

1) I believe Tavene would have taken 8 damage if both attacks hit. Kilo's unarmed strikes do medium weapon damage, so 4 each.

Are you playing major npc's as pc's? If you are, or if you've decided to do it this way, that's totally fine, but if PC's make all rolls then I think there's just a DC we need to beat on defense too. I am making an assumption here

Do I have a Health score, Mana just told me she thinks only NPC's have Health Scores.-this written after rest of post.

Feeling other-Tavene's approach and as both blades descend towards him, Kilo slides backwards, keeping both opponents in his field of vision and using his short knives to parry the oncoming swords. Belatedly realizing either Tavene is not going to go down quickly, Kilo changes tactics slightly, relying less on his physical speed and more on keeping only one Tavene able to attack him at a time. He circles the mast until he finds an opportunity to attack original Tavene, then lashes out at her again.

Kilo was totally about to push a random rune, but boarding up the hole seems to make a lot of sense. He goes up to find one of the ships crew and suggest they get the hole covered. Quickly!

Anson fishes a cube out of one of his numerous pockets and sticks it in the coconut.
