Sorin Markof |
I dont think many people are going to pick up on your hidden messages as you rolled really high and they have to beat you by 4+ (In fact, I think you're sincere about your concern and must really love her (failed by 4+)

Sorin looks at the each of the group in turn. Well, if we want to get going, I suggest we get some sleep. Hopefully this storm will blow over or at least die down during the night.
Americo the Wandering Cleric |
"Assuming it is a natural storm, I should be able to handle the weather. If it's not natural, we may be in a bit more danger. But what's life without a little danger, eh?" Americo lifts his cup and grins as he says the last part.
"But like the good bard said, our compensation? We still haven't heard what that's to be, eh?"
DM Mathpro |
The man shrugs "The queen didn't tell me specifically how much the pay out would be but seeing how she plans on somehow using to Torc to retain her seat on the throne you can bet the payoff will easily cover retirement for anyone of you...though you've advanced this far so I don't see any of you retiring any time soon.
Hege Vargsdóttir |
A few seconds later her intellect starts to analyse not what but how the bard spoke and the hidden meaning stands clear, she flashes a quick smile at Brandr. "Well spoken... Brandr was it? I believe I haven't introduced my self I am Hege Vargsdóttir. she says and extends her hand to him.
Eámanë Helyanwë |
Eámanë Helyanwë quirked her mouth in a I'm not impressed fashion as her eyes regarded the hooded man coldly. As her companions took more time to go through introductions she huffed lightly and regarded a window with the snow blowing outside. "First light," she simply declared. "I will meet you all downstairs then. Be ready, we'll press hard tomorrow."
DM Mathpro |
The hooded figure bids you farewell and heads for the door. "Remember don't let the Torc fall into the wrong hands" he says before he leaves.
You are all free to do as you please for the night. Rooms have been provided for free by the queen for those of you that wish to sleep. For those that wish to do other things let me know what you want to do. There is still plenty of food to eat and booze to drink lol.
Americo the Wandering Cleric |
Technically, there is unlimited booze!
Americo thanks the hooded stranger, before excusing himself and heading back to the common room.
He only stays there a bit, before sacking out for the night.
"Don't worry about breakfast, all. We will eat like heroes in the morning!"
To anyone who meets up with him at the bar, in a low voice, "So, how paranoid are you feeling? This sounds like a whopper of a setup, and I'd prefer to walk away at the end if possible. If you like, I can link us together for about 3 hours with a mental connection. This way we could communicate (hopefully) securely no matter the distance."
Telepathic Bond, lasts for 170 minutes for anyone who wants to join in. I will also cast Status on anyone who allows, explaining the nature of the spell and its precautionary measures.
Before sacking out for the night, "Barkeep, do you have any empty barrels back there? I can help you clean up before I go to bed if you like." If the barkeeper is amenable, Americo will help stack and clean up the back areas, before casting create water followed by enhance water to fill the empties with ale. There, a good deed for the innkeep!
Brandr Silver-Blood |
Brandr followed Americo out. He made an inviting gesture to anyone who seemed interested-- Bariel and Hege especially, since he knows their names. "Let's return to dallying and idle banter. There's nothing like meeting new people, and I have a feeling in my bones that some of you may have a story to tell." He made a point to gesture to Eámanë as well-- no point in not being as friendly as he could be.
"So, how paranoid are you feeling? This sounds like a whopper of a setup, and I'd prefer to walk away at the end if possible. If you like, I can link us together for about 3 hours with a mental connection. This way we could communicate (hopefully) securely no matter the distance."
Brandr laughed at the question. "Something's definitely afoot. I've spoken to vampires that have had less reason to kill me," he subtly bragged. "That sounds like a good idea. Keeps us on our toes if something happens. Nothing's worse than a night ambush no-one notices."
If anyone shares in idle conversation, Brandr tries to mine them for anecdotes or stories. He's looking for things he can later exaggerate on and tell, casting their storyteller as the hero-- Brandr would never take credit for something he didn't do. If they stick around, he tells one of his own. Probably the one about the afore-mentioned vampire.

"Gjallerbrond the vampire lord looked down from his sepuchral altar on me. The plan was that I would come back simpering, to play on his arrogant side, but now that he had the girl I had to think fast. She was sprawled out on the altar and he had his hands on her neck-- I was pretty sure she was about to be on the receiving side of a bad experience. I shouted 'Hey, you rot-sniffing corpse-eating shadow of a man, you trumped-up demi-ghoul, you loathsome and pathetic brood, let that girl go or I'll teach you to fear me like you fear babbling brooks, Varisian bread and gate fences! By the time I'm done with you you'd have wished I staked you and left you for the sun!'
"He turned on me, and the vampire lord's eyes were wild with anger, and there was hunger there, too. Tall, pale and hideous. I don't think he even wondered where I came from-- just another human to eat. He shouted, 'Your will is mine, creature!' and plucked at my brain with those eyes of his. Vampires can dominate your will just by looking at you, but Heggarth the Lesser, right before he'd passed out, had warded me with a protective rune from Torag that would keep me safe-- the way he put it, it would keep me in Torag's grace so that I would lend loyalty to only my own tasks. I don't think the vampire knew that, so, well, I stiffened up and shouted 'No!' and he bought it.
"Right then is when Grimm came around the corner with a blindfold on, all muscle and no presence. Grimm knew he as no match for the monster's eyes and took a very, very poor choice of actions in lieu of any sort of meaningful advice. Well, the vampire started laughing at the sight of him walking into the crypt, clutching his Hellknight-wrought greatsword, blind as a bat. It was an awful sound. The things nightmares are made of.
"He pointed at me with a pale, crooked finger and said-- 'You loathsome shadow of a man--' I think he thought he was clever-- 'I command you to kill your friend.' I remember the vampire looked smug.
"I faked it. I think I faked it pretty well, too, because even Grimm was worried. I charged at him with my glaive ready, and a foot away, I cried out, 'Grimm, he's right in front of you!' and shoved him straight into the vampire. I don't think he was expecting that. Well, to be fair, neither was Grimm."
Brandr turns in only when there's no-one in their recently christened adventuring party left in the common room to talk to. He sleeps for about two and a half hours until the spell Americo placed on him rolls off, then prepared his adventuring gear for the remainder of the night. Clear spindle ioun stone gives him the ring of sustenance ability, so, just using it wisely.
Bariel |
Bariel will stay up chatting with Americo and Brandr and the others, but doesn't share any stories of his past at this juncture.
"Yeah this has all the marks of a set-up, but as long as we don't walk in blind, and always have a way out, we will be fine. I've been set up a time or two myself. Besides, she's the one with the money, the other guys think they can do it on their own. She may just be the lesser of two evils if the others are working for demons and her grandma is some cosmic witch."
Hege Vargsdóttir |
Hege accepts the offer and follows the others to the bar. She nips at a glass of chilled cider while listening to Brandr's story. His initial attempts to draw stories from her yields nothing, she changes the story as he closes in for an answer.
She shares elevated moot with a smile once in a while, participating in conversation.
"You are properly right that this is not as innocent as it sounds. Where I grew up the saying was never trust a witch." She smiles at her anecdote.
When she is two thirds done with her glass, she excuses her self and leaves: "I think it is time for me to say goodnight, if I have to be up early tomorrow. Ilmatar come!"
DM Mathpro |
The next morning comes and as usual its cold and snowing out but the snow has let up tremendously since the night before. You all meet down stairs in the lobby with all your gear ready to go. I will need Knowlege Geography checks from those that can make them to determine where the Veil of Tears is located.
The Veil of Frozen Tears lies at the northernmost edge of Irrisen in an isolated area where the cold plain abuts the mountainous glaciers at the Crown of the World. With out magical ways of travel it will take about 2-3 days to get there from Whitethrone.
Brandr Silver-Blood |
"So, do any of you know where this item is, roughly?"
If we had to legend lore it, it'd make me happy. But I'm in the party.
Hope this doesn't die. Was everyone waiting for me? If so-- sorry. >>;

Brandr thought on it for about a second. He then began to turn a tale of directions, cold mountains, frozen passes, long rivers and tall trees. At the end of his description, he had painted a fair and honest depiction of the location.
"Never been there," he said. He shrugged smugly. "I read it in a book once."
Americo the Wandering Cleric |
"We could wind walk, or possibly teleport directly there. After breakfast, of course."
Everyone who accepts receives the following spells, all at caster level 17.
Americo the Wandering Cleric |
Once we're ready to roll, Americo will ask someone to predict the weather. No Knowledge: nature, unfortunately.
wind walk will grant everyone flight and disguise capability, and we can travel approximately 60 MPH to the target.
"Ah...nothing like a good breakfast, a mug of ale, and some rousing prayers to Cayden Cailean to start the day!"
If necessary, Americo also has find the path prepared.
Hege Vargsdóttir |
Why not just greater teleport? Isn't Brandr's description enough?
Hege listens to the discussion while they all have breakfast. "It has been some time since I rose before dawn." is her first comment that day, not a morning person.
"Americo I would prefer a teleport, flying isn't necessarily safe here."
Picking eating a piece of sweet bread she praises: " A wonderful breakfast you're treating us to." Her owl looks with disdain at the prepared food and then at her tilting its head and squawking at her. "Go hunt your own food then." she says irritated to Ilmatar.
"Did you wonder about the weather to come?"
Knowledge Nature: 1d20 + 33 ⇒ (12) + 33 = 45
Americo the Wandering Cleric |
"Yes, I was mostly curious about the normal weather patterns here. Maybe it might be worth controlling it. Then again, if we run into bad weather at the destination I could use my spell then. Well, I'm ready whenever you all are. One teleport coming up when you say go."
Hege Vargsdóttir |
"Irrisen is the land of permanent winter. That being said there can be anything from calm crisp days to howling blizzards." Hege answers the question.
Looking around she continues: "I believe we're ready to leave when breakfast is over, Ilmatar returns and our other female arrives. Where is she, she insisted we should leave early."
