The longbow slips out of green thug's fingers, and then he gets a face full of cold blast, which drops him.

I've marked all the fallen thugs in red on the map. Three are down -- both of the rooftop thugs, and one on the ground beside Ra-Khefer. Three remain -- one in melee with Turel, and two still using longbows. The archers target Kito and Qari as the most obvious targets to them.

Khopesh vs Turel: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 Miss

Longbow vs Kito: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16 I believe mage armor stops this one if I counted AC right?

You resume your travel through the Necropolis toward the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye. During the last mile, you call back whatever you can remember about the Scorched Hand, compare notes and try to put together a clear picture of your rival group. The following information consists of things that you discover while talking to the rest of your group. You may read all the spoilers, not just your own, as you are all comparing notes. The spoiler tags are simply for convenience of reading, to avoid a wall of text.

Harmose thinks back to Khelru.:
Khelru was born and raised in the city of Ipeq. He comes from a family of hardworking fishing folk, except for his brothers, who enlisted in the city’s merchant marines. [...] In Absalom, Khelru had a chance meeting with a young wizard named Azaz Arafe, also an Osirian native. The two shared coffee and conversation, and not long after that, mutual attraction. Yet the difference in their backgrounds remains a sticking point in their relationship even today. Khelru takes pride in the struggles he underwent to reach his current station, and privately thinks Azaz takes his life of academic privilege for granted. [...] Although one might assume Khelru’s greatest loyalty would lie with his companion, Azaz, in truth his first loyalty belongs to Nethys—even if he is not consciously aware of the fact. Khelru is certainly attracted to Azaz and cares very deeply for his partner, but he’s not in love with him. When Khelru first met Azaz, his heart skipped a beat, and he wondered that the handsome young man with eyes for him alone, but lately Khelru has felt stifled, and he wonders whether Azaz is just going through the motions of being interested in Nethys and the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye to appeal to him. Rather than being in love with Aziz, Khelru is in love with his faith, though he does not fully understand this about himself.

Turel thinks back to the Scorched Hand's insistence on exploration sites.:
[...] Velriana immediately began researching Wati’s history, and in doing so made the acquaintance of the Osirian priest Khelru. By that time, Osirion’s tombs had been open for exploration for some time—with the exception of the necropolis of Wati, which remained closed due to local politics with the Temple of Pharasma. Velriana shared the rumor that the Ruby Prince intended to correct the oversight soon, and suggested she and Khelru work together. Khelru introduced her to Azaz, and the three traveled to Sothis. There they discovered the existence of Wati’s original temple to Nethys, forgotten inside the necropolis and likely never explored. They decided to be the first to explore the lost temple, and the company of the Scorched Hand was formed. [...] Of the members of the Scorched Hand, Velriana’s obvious favorite is Khelru. Although their interpretations of The Book of Magic (the Nethysian holy book) differ, they are both devout individuals. They also share a conviction that the temple of Pharasma has mishandled the lottery, and the exploration of the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye should fall solely under their purview. And it doesn’t hurt their friendship that Khelru’s magic is divine, so there is no basis for competition between them.

Aleris thinks back to the group's indifference to magic.:
An unacknowledged rift exists between Idorii and the rest of the Scorched Hand. Idorii is the only non-Nethysian in the group, and the tenets of Nethys’s faith dictate that the lowest commoner capable of casting a single cantrip is exalted over the greatest of magicless kings and queens—or, in Idorii’s case, the most experienced warrior. In the Scorched Hand, the skilled and deadly Idorii is the least and lowest member of the team, solely because of her lack of magical ability. While Khelru and Velriana usually take pains to skirt around or de-emphasize this facet of their faith, Idorii is no fool. But while she can’t deny that it bothers her, Velriana’s money does help her to forget her lowly station. [...] The Scorched Hand’s rivalry with the PCs stems from the Nethysian group’s belief that they alone are entitled to access to the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye. Khelru believes this every bit as much as Velriana does—after all, as devout followers of Nethys, he and his companions are the ones who deserve to be assigned to explore their god’s ancient temple. Unfortunately for the Scorched Hand, the priests of Wati’s Grand Mausoleum consider their management of the necropolis above reproach and have the full support of the Ruby Prince to back them up. [...] As well as serving as Velriana’s de facto second-in-command, Khelru is the Scorched Hand’s spiritual advisor and group healer. He fully believes in the tenets of Nethys’s faith, and from an unbiased perspective, his claim to the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye is a valid one. While capable of aggression to advance what he feels are his rights, Khelru is not a coldblooded murderer. He is not an evil man, but neither does he feel constrained by misguided morality—in matters of magic and faith, good and evil are irrelevant.

Kito thinks back to Velriana's strong protests about the brothel.:
Velriana Hypaxes is one of countless minor aristocrats who choke the upper echelons of Taldan society, but rather than give in to the ennui that now mires that once-great empire, she came up with a new maxim for herself: “Better to seize life by the throat than surrender willingly to obscurity.” When she came of age, Velriana demanded that her family send her to the Arcanamirium in Absalom, where she could study the magical arts. There she was exposed to the worship of Nethys, whose tenets spoke to her on a personal level. The All-Seeing Eye exalts the use of magic, but underlying that is an element of meritocracy. Power is not given, but taken—by those with the strength and resolve to do so, regardless of gender or background. This was a completely different outlook from how Velriana was raised, but given Taldor’s decline, it made a great deal of sense to her as a person of intelligence and determination. [...] Velriana is the natural leader of the Scorched Hand, and her temperament as a proud Taldan aristocrat wouldn’t permit anything less. She doesn’t flinch from hard decisions or shirk from the responsibility they bring—but she’s skilled at rationalization. In practical matters, her knowledge of history, religion, and the arcane provide the group with the guidance necessary for their exploration. [...] Velriana has made her peace with her choice of teammates and is willing to share the knowledge and treasures they may discover with them—as long as they work with her. When it comes to opposing the PCs, however, she won’t think twice about killing them if they stand in her way. This also holds true for any members of the Scorched Hand who might betray her. [...] Velriana views the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye as the property of her company by divine right, and there is no line she will not cross to claim it. Her long-term goal is to amass wealth, knowledge, and magical power and then return to Taldor. Eventually, she hopes to change the empire’s course—by force if necessary.

If Deseri, Qari, Polux or Ra-Khefer posted remembrances and Int/Wis checks, point me to them as I've missed them.

The only recollection I could come up with was posted 8-24-16 at 2:15 pm. I doubt it's enough to do much for the squad, though.

Found it! I rule that's enough of a remembrance to warrant a roll, so roll away, Qari! Int/Wis, whichever you prefer.

Unfortunately, Qari's remembrances bring up no useful memories.

As the group walks towards the Sanctum, Turel muses for a moment as to his limited experiences with the members of the Scorched Hand. After a moment he speaks up, "I remember hearing of the cleric Khelru, to whom Velriana is quite close. If a conflict breaks out we may be able to sway him to our cause."

Harmose shares his memories with the group.

"I don't know if we can sway Khelru. He's more in love with his god then he is his partner. The odd thing is..." Harmose grabs Aleris's hand, "it does not have to be that way. The heart can embrace so many forms of love. There is no reason that one cannot be passionately devoted not only to your gods, but also to your lovers."

"I get why Velriana and Khelru want access to the Nethys temple. What I absolutely don't get is why they couldn't come to us like adults... I offered that option to them, but did they talk to us? Nope, they hired thugs."

"So... how do we want to approach this? I'd rather talk, but they've shown no inclination to treat with us. If we must fight, I'd rather go non-lethal, but I'm pretty sure that they have no such intent as far as we're concerned."

With the sorrow plain in her voice, Kito says "Velriana will not be open to discussion. I suspect that she will kill any who stand in her way, even if that person were a member of her own team."

Aleris gives Harmose's hand a squeeze, nodding in agreement. "I'm like Harmose...I feel conflicted about fighting them on this since I don't have any personal stake in exploring this temple. It makes more sense to me to let those that revere Nethys search it first."

She sighs. "But it sounds more and more like Kito is right that Velriana won't listen to any sort of reason at this point. I guess maybe she thinks it's an insult to her and her faith that her group wasn't selected to explore this place - so now it's personal, whether we want it to be or not."

"But you know even if Khelru won't listen either, maybe Idorii will? She's the only one in the group that can't use magic of some sort, so she's got little personal stake in the whole thing beyond whatever gold she can earn," she points out.

Shaking her head, Kito says "She may claim that it is divine right, but it seems to me she is just rationalizing her decisions. She strikes me as someone who is always grasping for more power."

"This is a dangerous attitude to have, especially when studying arcane matters. There are some magics that should never be used."
