Aleris swears as her arrow misses the approaching asp and clatters against the table, drawing the attention and ire of the death dog in the process.

Turel's scorpion strike cracks into one of the death dog's hind legs, making a crunching sound, and the beast squeals, its movement visibly slowed down. Aleris adds to the injury by sinking an arrow squarely into the death dog's side, making it roar loudly out of both throats.

Harmose's color spray catches both the asp and the death dog.

Trained Knowledges Engineering, Geography or Local with varying DCs may help deduce what these buildings were used for. Gimme some rolls if you have trained those skills.

As Polux goes through the yard in counter-clockwise order:

The harsh sun and lack of irrigation has left nothing but hot sand in the once-tidy yard. The well to the east is long dry.

In the building that the death dog came from, someone has buried a small cache of treasure in the northeast corner of the room. The death dog has recently dug up much of the floor, and a Polux finds some petty cash in gold, silver and copper, and a turquoise earring.

The next building, just north of the well, is empty except for debris, refuse, and windblown sand.

Next up is the building in the northeast corner. When Polux enters to investigate, he finds three skeletons -- two adult-sized, one slightly smaller. As soon as he steps in the threshold into the building, the skeletons move a little, then start pushing themselves to their feet, rising to attack Polux.

Combat begins again. I have placed everyone in rough marching order throughout the yard. Roll your initiatives, but don't forget to post what you decided to do with the asp before moving on to this second combat. Check your positions on the map that they are reasonable.

Harmose gives Deseri an impish grin. "In my experience, dowagers are a very special breed of family matron that share a few common concerns: first, reputation. Second, wealth. Third, connections, titles and honors. They wish to achieve these milestones through marrying off their hapless children to others as impeccably dull as they are."

He pauses, considering. "It's kind of like dog-breeding, actually. Everyone is obsessed with bloodlines and pedigrees, trying to better themselves socially, turn their noses up at their neighbors, and make their excessively inbred grandchildren the envy of all. When they achieve a matrimonial success, they bark about it at top volume to all their friends."

He sighs. "You'd think I'd be safe. I'm penniless, and have worked diligently on my reputation as a feckless, irresponsible flirt. Alas, I have a title, and an impeccable pedigree filled with utterly respectable philanthropists, social climbers and political aspirants. Due to my youth, most of the matrons see me as someone they can reform. Many of them are from new money, and are willing to overlook my many peccadilloes in order to get my title. And perhaps then there is also the challenge of the chase... They can sniff out the fact that I'm evading them, and that makes them all the more eager to get the prize."

"Come to think of it, speaking in tongues might not be enough to deter them." Harmose frowns, then lights up again. "Oh? What if I arrange to convulse and foam at the mouth at a society gathering? What do you think? Too much?"

After the relatively easy combat with the three skeletons, Polux checks the building that they were resting in, finding nothing of interest.

Kito and Harmose's Local checks:
I'm not going to require separate rolls for each building, so both of you may know all of the following:

The eastern courtyard appears to be a servants' yard, used by the household servants of the main building. The three skeletons in the northeastern building, judging by their size and location, were likely a married pair of servants and their teenage child. The fact that they remain here unburied suggests that they may have been some of the last survivors.

The two buildings immediately north and south of the well may have been guard quarters where the house's guards would have been housed. The petty cash and turquoise earring found in the southern building were probably a bad day stash of one of the guards.

Polux moves on to the last building that has no door, the northwestern one.

Solifugid stealth: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

Despite Polux's great Perception roll for the northwestern building, he forgets to look upward, or perhaps the shadows concealed the giant solifugid creeping around there. Once Polux is inside, it drops onto him, getting a surprise attack. I'm going to treat that as a charge attack.

Kito is slow to react, but fortunately the creature is even slower. She once again gestures, causing a small dark cloud to form over the spider-like creature.

Cast Misfortune hex, DC 16 Will negates.

Don't feel bad Deseri, I missed that last combat too!

"Everyone is on their game today," Aleris smiles after the death dog, asp, and skeletons are all handled quickly and without a single injury. "Just be sure to keep it up, okay? This place seems pretty big so who knows what else is lurking around."

Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

As a scuffling sound and a yell of pain emanate from the small building in the corner, Aleris reacts quickly and raises her bow to fire at the large spider-like creature that can be seen in the doorway.

Attack (MW Longbow; PB Shot, Into Melee): 1d20 + 6 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 1 - 4 = 4
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Unfortunately, as she attempts to step back she stumbles over a small rock and the shot sails off into the sky.

Knowledge Nature is the appropriate one

Deseri knows that this is a giant solifugid, a giant variety of a typical arid climate vermin slightly similar to spiders and scorpions but different from any of them.

Round 1:

Turel hears the cries from Aleris as her shot flies off into the compound, and sees the solifugid emerge from the building. Motioning to Ra-Khefer he sprints across the courtyard and moves to flank with Polux. "Trouble."

Location updated on map.

Once in position, he strikes out with his spear...

It's a giant... spider?

Round one

Harmose has no idea what it is, or how to fight it, so he just relies on one of his classic attacks: acid to the face.

Acid Splash, RTA: 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 5 - 4 = 17
Acid damage with Acid Flask material component: 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Deseri, Aleris and Qari's ranged attacks all go somewhere...not near the creature.

Turel's spear, however, strikes true, bringing out a squeal from the creature, and Harmose's acid splash only adds to the injury. Together, the two of them make the creature look quite shaky.

Kito's misfortune coalesces around the solifugid...

Will DC 16: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19 ...and dissipates.

Polux and Ra-Khefer still to go.

"Really big birds?" Kito asks. She doesn't appear to have such a creature, and Thera remains her tiny self perched on Kito's shoulder. Solifugid? Sounds more like a mushroom than a bug to me.

The base layer map had been moved a little, to present an inaccurate view. I fixed it so re-check your positions. Ra-Khefer, you should be able to get into position.

Samy. I'm not sure but I think Combat Reflexes allows me an AoO even if I am flatfooted. Don't know if it works when I am attacked from hiding, or surprised like that though. If it does, let me know and I'll roll for it.

As the arachnid creature drops on Polux, he can feel the pincers and quelícera making short work of him - shrugging the pain away, seeing the creature slide down to the ground behind him, he slides a step back moving around as he does to face his opponent, and thrusts forward with the longspear.

I'm gonna rule that you get no AoO vs a surprise attack. If I'm wrong, point it out and I'll use it next occasion.

Ra-Khefer initiative: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (17) - 1 = 16
Polux initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Both act before the solifugid, and solidly trounce it. The solifugid is dead before it gets its first round action off.

Combat is over again.
