What I likely have is a sister who was born AFTER I was retrieved, and before my parents started living separately. So one who is 9 or 10? My parents were frantic to get me back as I was their only child. But perhaps while they were searching for me they had a surprise pregnancy.

I know Harmose really well. I would accept a much younger sibling rather than one that was a peer, because that would have changed the entire backstory I've built.

@Samy,

I looked through the downtime rules again and saw there were multiple ways spending the influence could be handled. The most obvious seem to be Prepare for an Event, Gather Information and Research. Use whatever seems most appropriate given the situation.

Also, I did not add in Kito's +2 for Gather Information using Diplomacy (from Affable trait) because I wasn't certain this qualified as a normal Gather Information.

Sorry for being so late with the post of downtime.

Hello Samy.

I've been drowned in Overseeing Cosmic Captive (we have 25 tables!), but now that it has launched, my bandwidth window should have returned somewhat.

Let me see about getting caught up now.

Alas, I'm not sure what skill to take for that trait from Meehr. They're all sadly class skills already. I guess it will be Knowledge Nobility?

I have Harmose updated in Hero Lab. I will try to get the profile updated later this afternoon.

Hey guys! I've been home from my trip since early Monday but between returning to work and the site issues I've been slow about getting caught up on everything. I managed to get a few of my games last night/today and I'll hopefully be able to get the rest, including this one, when I get home from work later tonight :)

So, I realized that I never really gave much of a report on how my convention trip went. If anyone's curious...

DieCon 17; Spoilered for Length:

It actually went quite well! A friend of my brother's from his WoW days flew out from Las Vegas and went with us; the three of us drove out to Collinsville, IL on that Thursday morning and met up at our hotel with another mutual friend of theirs that lived a bit closer (but was still far enough away to need to stay at the hotel). The rest of the evening was spent out in St. Louis meeting up with some other folks that the gang knew from WoW for dinner and ice-cream floats afterwards. If you're ever in St. Louis, I'd definitely check out Blueberry Hill; it's a great little eatery!

Friday morning we were up early for breakfast at Denny's with even more people that my brother and the other two members of our gang knew from past DieCons. Then it was out to the convention center for check-in, signing up for our game slots, and then a quick lunch at the nearby Mexican place before the con officially started with Session #1 at 2pm! For me, Session #1 was a Call of Cthulhu game, which I had never played before. The game was set in the days leading up to and during the voyage of the Titanic and was quite enjoyable! However, this particular game was quite investigation-heavy which is apparently unusual for the DM that ran it? I think his normal CoC games are more along the lines of, 'Group meets up and interacts for a bit, then s*** starts going down'. Either way, it was fun!

Session #2, later that same evening, was for a game of Deadlands - a system that I'd played before, but not in some years. Since I didn't have my own original character I ended up playing the pregen Mad Scientist - Gordon Sumatra! I built a more mobile hot air balloon! Huzzah! Fun was had by all. By the time Session #2 ended it was a little past 11pm so we all returned to the hotel to get our beauty rest for the next day!

Saturday was a blast, especially the first two sessions (#3 & #4). We started off with a FAST session of Call of Scooby Doo - yes, it's more or less what it sounds like. We played the Scooby Doo gang as they attempted to help special guest star Wednesday Addams claim her legacy by clearing the spirits out of a spooky old manor house. Fun! Puzzles! Sanity checks! It was grand :)

For Session #4 I decided to get my board/card games on and had signed up for a game simply called 'Jack the Ripper' by Crypt Monkey Studios, which seemed interesting. Turns out the company is both pretty new and pretty small, with the bulk of the work on the game having been done by the husband and wife team (Ty & Dawn) that own the company. I believe he did most of the writing and she did the artwork - and they had their kids as some of the playtesters, hehe. At any rate, even though there were only 3 of us that showed up for this session (myself, a kid that couldn't have been more than maybe 12, and an older woman there with her family) we had a great time playing as Ty showed us the ropes. By some strange quirk I ended up being 'Jack' for the first several games, enough so that Ty told me that when he saw me at next year's DieCon he'd be calling me by my new name. Guess this means I'll have to get a shirt to wear... >:)

The last session for Saturday (#5) was originally supposed to be the PFS special Race for the Runecarved Key and I was signed up on the Tier 1-2 table. Sadly they apparently didn't have enough signs up for the special to fire, so they had to do some quick shuffling of the tables and run some different scenarios as back-ups. The higher tier table ended up running Tome of Righteous Repose and the low tier table where I ended up ran through The Confirmation. Though I was a bit disappointed that the special didn't happen, I did enjoy the game that we had. I'd played Confirmation three or four times already in PbP but it was neat to be able to do it live as well. Plus it let me give my witch the last scenario she needed to reach 2nd level - huzzah!

Sunday, being the last day of the con, was a little more subdued as you might expect. Both of my sessions for this day (#6 & 7) were devoted to playing more PFS - specifically the very new two-parter series called Champion's Chalice. I won't spoil the scenarios except to say that playing the first part with a cavalier, a magus, a rogue, and my life oracle was...interesting. The only real bummer part about the experience was the behavior of one of the other players (who had also been at my Confirmation table the night before), though being relatively young (13/14) and obviously pretty new to Pathfinder, I was willing to cut him some slack and be patient.

After Session #7 ended, we said our goodbyes, packed up, and headed for home. It was a grand experience and I'm definitely hoping to be able to go again next year!

Random Takeaways
My brother and his friends (Becca & Chris) know some awesome people by way of this convention.

Now that we know how PFS sign-ups & Warhorn work for this convention, maybe next year my brother and I can actually play some PFS together. We'd hoped to do that this year and it sadly didn't work out.

I need more Call of Cthulhu and Deadlands in my life.

Bringing my laptop was completely unnecessary as I had next to no time to sit down and use it - I was either gaming, sleeping, or eating.

The concession stand is expensive! Next year, just bring an empty bottle to refill with water and some of those little flavor packets.

Playing PFS live is a nice change of pace, but I still prefer my PbP games.

At live tables, especially with strangers, one needs to be much more assertive or else they're liable to be drowned out by players with more vocal/dominant personalities.

Start saving 'fun money' now for next year's convention. There were soooo many things that I wanted to buy but didn't have the funds for. I did end up coming home with some shiny new (and green) FAST dice, my own copy of the Jack the Ripper game, as well as a card game called Super Fight though.

For convenience, I have sorted the treasure list by value (highest first) and filtered out any items that have been claimed by anyone. I think the resultant (sorted and filtered) view should be visible to all, so you can see what the most expensive outstanding items are easily at the top.

Apparently there are 112 items that are listed as either "Sell" or blank (not claimed by anyone). Assuming that some of those have been claimed but haven't been updated to the document (or will be claimed once you notice them on the list), we're probably talking less than 100 items, so 10 lots or so to partition things into.

Liberty's Edge

Female Human Commoner 1

Oh and no, you can't have Harmose roll every roll. Since the event is time limited, there's only so many people each of you can talk to in the course of the night. Let's say that each of you may make up to three Diplomacy/Bluff rolls to begin with, and we'll see if that's enough or if we'll have to do more.

Also, if you rolled really well earlier, don't despair that your roll was wasted. The earlier Diplomacy rolls do not count against the three you still have left (so you may roll three *after* those earlier Diplo rolls), but if you rolled really well then, you may use that as an "extra" fourth roll -- however, you'll need to pick a lot to sell to that given NPC, so we'll know which lot the extra roll counts for.

Liberty's Edge

Also, ask questions if anything is unclear and don't be afraid of sounding stupid. These whole mechanics are making my head spin, but I'm trying to implement them as accurately as the adventure says.

Soooo...anyone good with numbers? Should we gamble a bit or just sell everything for the flat 90%? :)

Liberty's Edge

A gamble, IMO, involves the possibility to lose money. You can't lose, you're guaranteed the 90% no matter what. Dice rolls can only increase the money. ;)

Looking through the unclaimed treasure, Kito will claim (or ceed to someone else if they want it) the following items:
Wand of Lesser Restoration (10 charges) -- she has a very small chance of activating it.
Wand of Cure Light Wounds (26 charges)
Scroll of Remove Curse

All of the above are things that I think the group will likely need at some point. I don't mind if someone else wants one of these items, especially the Wand of Lesser Restoration since that requires UMD for Kito to use it.

After reviewing the treasure list, Turel would put a claim upon these items:
Bracers of Armor +1
Potion of Cure Light Wounds
Potion of Hide from Undead
Everburning Torch
2 Tanglefoot bags. (How were these overlooked??)

Again, he would relinquish his claim to any of these items if someone else claims them. It would be a good idea to double-check the treasure list as there are quite a number of useful items to select, especially for the spellcasters of the party.

As for the auction, Turel does not have much to contribute to this but he would certainly assist in the negotiation with a well-timed Bluff roll, he he.

Questions to Samy:

So there was just the single round of discovery?

If it is just a single round, are we at the point that we should just bot Polux's roll? Perhaps assume a take 10 for either a 14 or 19 depending on if it is considered Gather Information. I would probably point him at Djat Masakhet + Intef Karam since we don't know anything about them.

How do you plan to allow influence to work into this? Now that I see more of the rules, it seems that "Scheme for an Upcoming Adventure" would work best with what I can see of the mechanics.

---

Group:

Strategically, in order to get the best money it sounds like we want our best diplomacy people to tackle getting a second or third person to bid. Kito can make a DC 20 by taking 10 so if we group the treasure correctly she can get us one NPC. Kito also has influence although it probably would only work with some of the people here. I doubt Menya cares about magic influence.

It also seems prudent to dump lesser stuff in a lot where we feel like we have a good chance of getting more than one person interested in it.

We might want to do a smaller test lot, just to get a feel for how it works and also try to gauge interest on those we didn't talk to already.

Scheme for an Upcoming Adventure will work as written in the rules. You'd have to spend Capital (for those of you who have worked on obtaining some), and get a bonus in return. Obviously I can't give a list of all working and non-working combinations of Capital Type vs NPC since there's dozens of them, but you can always ask if a certain Capital/NPC combination would work or not. I won't make you spend it if it wouldn't work for that combination, of course.

And yes, single round of discovery, although it represented about half an hour to an hour of mingling, rather than six seconds. Since Polux posted intent to post, I'm inclined to give him tonight still to get a post up and choose a target; if that doesn't happen we can assume that at least the DC5 was hit with someone, and if the group likes, we can make that Djat+Intef, or whoever.

Quote:

I think this is an excellent idea. Bundle up a lot of items at the lower end of the value scale (so it's no big loss either way) and give it a roll.

@Deseri - Yep, I just haven't had a good chance to update Aleris' profile with it yet!

And I'm game for making a small 'test lot' so we can get the hang of how this process works.

Since we know what many of the potential buyers are looking for, why don't we create categories according to it, like:

A: Expensive Weapons
B: Temple Records
C: Etc
D: Etc

We group the items therein, and then decide who to try and push them to?

Polux's Diplomacy is +4 (+9 to Gather Info), so he can auto succeed in a Diplo Aid another I guess :)

EDIT: Took a second look at the loot list - I think there was a mithral shirt that went to Polux in the end. That was removed from the list, correct? Apart from that, I'm good. Was looking at the scale mail +1 but it is just too clunky for a scout.

Also, do you mind if Polux grabs some scrolls? I think he has a fair chance of UMD them.

I'm also good with Polux claiming some scrolls :)

The idea of lumping the rest of what we've found into those catergories and going from there also sounds fine to me. It may make it easier to determine what sort of 'lots' to create once we've got a better breakdown of what we have to work with.

I have left every item on the original line as it appeared on the treasure list.

That's just based on a first glance through the stuff we've got to work with. Great work Kito and Aleris! You've broken things down into categories wonderfully. Now it's just a matter of assembling lots, and remember, you can stuff up to 49% of the lot's value with items from any category. As long as at least half the lot's value is of a category appropriate to your targeted NPC, you get to treat the lot as if it is completely of that category.

Also always remember, if you guys don't find this stuff fun, you always have the option of just taking 90%. It's not such a big loss, if this turns out to be more pain than you want to deal with.

I'll try to come up with categories that will work for the breakdowns you did Aleris. Thanks a lot for doing that!

With the Four Lanterns, I'm going to guess we should try them on weapons and anything we can sell to them as being crass. Might try them on magic. I don't think we put them as primary on any lot.

Shall we try a small weapons lot first? That may allow us to find out how interested The Four Lanterns are in that topic and allow us to practice. I'm thinking we can just put lot # in column A to indicate what items are in which lot.

Female Human NG Witch 4 | Wand CLW 2/50 | HP 23/23 | AC 14 Tch 10 Fl 14 | CMB +2 CMD +12 | F +3 R +1 W +4 +1 vs fire +4 heat | Init +0 | Perc +1, +2 when Thera near | Speed 30 | Spells: 1st 5/5 2nd 3/3 | Active Conditions: Mage Armor

Alright, instead of refining the categories I thought it might be better to list how interested each of the parties is in those sort of items.

Right now the interest level is Yes, Maybe, or blank. I suspect we will refine this as we go.

We don't know what the Four Lanterns or Manat Heshwah are interested in. I've taken some guesses on the Four Lanterns based on what we know of them. We will have to watch them and test the waters if we are to find out what they are interested in.

We were told that Ptemenib is not there as a buyer. I don't know if he would make an exception for the decree or the Pharasma holy symbol, but we certainly don't want to waste much time trying to entice him during the auction.

I'm thinking the first lot should be around 200 gp value. That is big enough to get rid of some stuff, and small enough that if we don't get any bidders it is only 20gp to 40gp we are likely losing. It will also allow us to test the waters and find out if the Four Lanterns are interested in weapons.

Does anyone want to mark off Lot #1? Once we have it marked off, we can decide what order people try to entice the groups in.

@Samy

Do buyers have a limited amount of funds, such that if we save the best items for last some of them could no longer bid? I'm asking because that would play into parts of our strategy if we have to worry about if the person can still afford an expensive item.

I can tell you for simplicity's sake that Ptemenib will not make an exception; he's not there as a buyer, period. So you don't need to think about that.

You don't need to worry about buyer funds running out.

@Samy
Can we team up on people for the auction, someone as the primary and someone else doing Aid Another?

If we succeed in getting someone to bid, will we know how easy it was?

Alright, I've put together three lots all valued around 200 gp.

Lot 1, 220gp

Mostly weapons.:

masterwork khopesh
scale mail
light crossbow
explorer's outfit
kukri
daggers (2)
chakrams (3)
cold iron bolts (5)
backpack
dagger
backpack
bolts (10)
10 bolts

Three potential targets: Menya the Whip, The Four Lanterns and Khammayid.

We may want to test the waters here with the Four Lanterns -- see how interested they are in bidding on weaponry.

Lot 2, 205 gp

gems and jewelry:

assortment of gems
Akhentepi's chariot
gold scarab clasp
silver tray
turquoise earring

One known target, The Meshhotens. We have no idea what Manaat Heshwah wants, so we might chat them up as well.
I don't see anyone else that is likely to be interested in this.

Lot 3, 200 gp

Minor Magic:

scroll of burning hands (CL 2nd)
scroll of shocking grasp (CL 2nd)
scroll of magic weapon
holy water (2)
scroll of charm person
scroll of magic missile

I don't think we have a good idea who might be shopping for this sort of thing. Try The Four Lanterns, Masakhet & Karam and Heshwah?

---

Since these are three different types of items, I see no reason we couldn't try them all one after another.

Our best people for getting bidders are:
Harmose: Diplo +13, Bluff +10
Deseri: Bluff +11 if she lies otherwise +6, Diplo +8
Aleris: Diplo +9
Kito: Diplo +7
Polux: Diplo +4 (would be much higher if it were a Gather Information check)
Turel: Bluff +2
Qari: Diplo +1
Ra: Diplo -1

So we have two people who can always hit the DC 20, four people who have a chance of making DC 25 checks and only two who have any chance at DC 30 checks.

All but one of us has a chance of making the DC 20 check, but some of those need to be very lucky.

Remember every check after the first is two harder. Even with a lucky roll, Harmose can't convince one of the people who are DC 30 they want to bid if we already influenced two others before that.

Unless Samy allows Aid Another, Ra will only be able to give advice.

For Lot 1, Khammayid and Four Lanterns are highly interested, so the lowest DC 20 (plus cumulative +2 for non-first targets). Menya is mildly interested in Lot 1 for the base DC 25.

For Lot 2, the Meshhotens are highly interested (base DC 20) and Manaat is mildly interested (base DC 25).

For Lot 3, the Four Lanterns are highly interested (20), Masakhet/Karam are mildly interested (25) and Heshwah is not interested at all (30).

So you know how interested they are (the base DC), but you don't know for what reason. (Whether they're highly interested in aspect A or aspect B of the lot. Could be anything that catches their eye.)

For a single lot, every party member gets one roll -- either base Diplomacy/Bluff roll or Aid Another. One character can't do both. When you move on to the next lot, that resets, so everyone gets 1 new roll to decide between whether they want to do the main roll or whether they want to Aid Another. There is no limit to how many people may Aid Another. You could take only a single target, with 1 doing the base roll and 7 doing Aid Another. This would likely get you a very high roll, and almost certainly clear the DC for the single target and get you the 100% value, but it would sacrifice the option of attacking multiple targets and getting possibly more than 100%. At the other extreme, you could have all eight of you targeting a separate NPC with a base roll and nobody doing Aid Anothers. If by some miracle you hit the DCs for all eight, you could get as much as the base 100% for the first target, +5% for the seven others for a total of 135% value! Of course that's pretty much impossible but it illustrates the principle. Because everyone only gets one roll, it's a balancing act between focusing on a single target, or splitting your focus on more targets for a chance at more money.

You'll need to specify in which order you go for the targets, so we know who gets the +2 and +4 modifiers for being your second and third choices.

Taking Lot 1 as an example, everyone may roll once for it. If you go for Khammayid first, he's DC 20. If you go for Four Lanterns second, they're 22 (base 20 +2 for being second). And if you go for Menya third, he's 29 (base 25 +4 for being third). You could also make Menya first, which would lower him to 25, and then the others would be 22 and 24 respectively, in either order. So you're either trying to hit 20-22-29 or 25-22-24. (Or a third option, with Menya in the middle, is 20-27-24.) All eight of you must specify which of those three rolls you are attempting, and whether you are doing the base roll or an Aid Another.

The money you get for the lot depends on the number of the three DCs that you clear. If you clear zero, you get 90%. If you clear one of them (any one), you get 100%. If you clear any two, you get 105%. If you clear all three, you get 110%. The money you get is not affected by *which* of the DCs you clear, only how many of them you clear.

Does this clarify or make things worse? :)

I suggest that we begin with just Lot 1 and see how it goes. Everyone gets to roll for it. Somebody needs to first decide the order of the targets, which will determine the DCs. Then everybody can roll. Once we get the hang of this, we can do multiple lots in a single post.

Alright, I've officially entered Lot 1 in Gameplay.

I would suggest:
1st: Deseri via bluff attempts to convince Menya the Whip -- requires she roll for it, DC 25
2nd: Harmose convinces Khammayid to bid (take 10 for 23), DC 22
3rd: Aleris attempts to convince The Four Lanterns to bid -- requires she roll for it, DC 24.

The rest of us hold back to Aid Another dependent on how the others do. Who we aid depends on how close someone came to making it on their roll.

Worst case, 1 bid so we get 220 gp.
Best case, 3 bids so we get 242 gp.

Brilliant plan, and brutal job on organizing the items Aleris ;)

Polux will sit tight and wait to see if his mastery of Diplomacy will be needed :D

Hey, no problem! Kito's still the one that's done most of the work here though, so she's the one that really deserves the thanks (almost typoed that as tanks) :)

I'll go ahead and make my Aleris post now even though Deseri hasn't had a chance to post hers yet, just so it'll be done :)

I am a little sleep deprived but I need to keep myself up for a few more hours so I can go yell at people and get my money back, stupid expensive shoes. Sorry for the delay in my action, work has been brutal and moving in with family is tiresome, a five year old and five month old are not constructive to sleeping during the day. Plus new place and sleeping here is weird.

I am going after Menya the Whip? This guy wants the armor and all we have is the scale mail, right? I have to find the coffee and drink a lot of it and I will work on getting my post in. Lying is actually not something I am amazing at but I will try since taking a ten will give me a 21. So I just embellish a little. Where did we find that armor? I do not remember and I am hoping someone sees this post while I quest for the sacred coffee!

Also Harmose you are adorable :D

Your character profile says:
*Bluff(cha)+3 rank, +3 mod =+6 (+11 on believable or unlikely lies)
Diplomacy(cha)+2rank, +3mod, +3class = +8

Yes, you are trying to convince Menya the Whip to bid on this lot. You can use either Bluff or Diplomacy to do it.

Since both Harmose and Aleris were able to convince their targets to bid without help, if you just get us close one of the other of us might be able to push them over the line via Aid Another.

I'll let someone better with words give suggestions on approach.

Sorry to hear real life has been so exhausting. Hope it gets better for you soon!

Deseri damn, that is a LOT to take in at once...

Really do try to sleep enough hours. From personal experience, I tend to never sleep as much as I should to dedicate myself to stuff I like to do and don't have time during the working day. But when things are not 'fine' it only makes it worse, your very metabolism gets messed up and your patience gets as thin as it can get.

If it weren't for these damn shoes I would be sleeping. But I spent nearly 200$ and they fell apart. I want it fixed since I am on my feet all night.then sleep followed by more coffee, glorious coffee.
