You all arrive at a small village upon hearing the rumors of Rappan Athuk.

This is a small trading post and fortified inn, surrounded by an ancient and crumbling stone curtain wall with wooden guard-towers that were clearly built in later years for added defense. The gates of the fort are closed and manned by two bowmen who scrutinize the adventurers closely, but since most visitors to Zelkor’s Ferry are armed and dangerous-looking they are unlikely to bar the party from entering unless the characters do or say something extremely stupid. Ten kobold skulls have been nailed to the gate as a mild warning to would-be attackers.

Everybody arrives at the dock through boats. The guards are keeping a vigilant eye on the goblin and tiefling as you all start walking.

What time of year is it? What is the weather like? And is the "necromancer's" house marked as such?

"Come, Esobok."

Morthak leads his riding dog off the boat and onto land. Both he and the dog sniff the air at the same time.

Is this it? He thinks. All that stands between the world and what dwells in Rappan Athuk is this pitiful place?

He wanders over towards the gate, and looks up at the gate, where kobold skulls hang. He looks at the skulls, and then looks around at the guards and passersby. Did anyone speak last rites for these creatures? They have souls also, and those souls must be sent on their way.

Morthak takes out a bone rattle and begins praying. Though he is mumbling, those who listen might catch a phrase from The Bones Land in a Spiral, a Pharasmin holy text. When he is done, he slowly climbs up and makes a mark with earth on the forehead of one of the skulls. While there, he deftly pulls out one of the kobold's teeth and pockets it.

A guard gives him a leery eye, but Morthak responds to his unasked question: "No sense giving spirits more cause to grumble."

He then walks back towards the buildings. He climbs up the steps to Bristleback's Inn, pushes the door open, and steps inside. Here we are, I suppose.

Erigga jumps off the boat and looks around, her backpack and heavy shield on her back. She looks back at her dwarf companion, still on the boat.

"Come on, uncle Igneous! Oh, we are finally here! I hope they have a good and strong dwarven ale in the tavern... the watery ones we have been drinking have almost made me forgot the taste of a good one..."

Without waiting for the dwarf, Erigga moves towards the little village, passing by the strange halfling and his dog and entering the Bristleback's Inn.

And so this begins... the dreaded Rappan Athuk awaits us... please, please, have a good ale... please.

Red Feather had been restless the entire trip. Was this his final destination. He had traveled the last two years long and wide, asking questions, consulting ancient tomes, and listening to long and sometimes poorly performed bards tales, that seemed to lead him towards this place.

As he disembarked and looked around the village, his attention was drawn to a lone hawk circling a short distance away. As he watched it wheel about, the hawk suddenly gave a single long drawn out call, then flew away.

That is a positive portent. Perhaps my journey is at an end... and a beginning.

Most of the others on the trip seemed to head towards the Inn. His search had taught him that this was always a good place to find thing out. He shouldered his meager belongings, and trudged after the others.

The little goblin looked around, wide-eyed. Surprised at the warm welcome of not being immediately attacked, he giggled as he hopped off the boat.

Seeing where the others are heading, Malazzesh joined them heading to the inn.

Not speaking to anyone in partcular, the goblin chatters, "It is cold here. The inn, it has a fireplace, yes? A nice warm hearth? It should be the best place to rest. I go rest!"

White as a sheet after the boat ride, Igneous cautiously steps off of the boat. He turns around and glares at it as if it insulted him then stomps off after Erigga.

"Wait lass, I am no as quick as ye' wearin' all o' me gear".

The dwarf shakes his head at the Goblin, What is his kind doing here? This place really must be going to hell.

Knowing how Goblins love to play with fire he feels compelled to respond, "Aye ye'll find fire at the Inn Gobo, just don't burn the durned place down ye dolt!"

As the boat docks, what looks a strange old man opens his old brown backpack retrieving an old manuscript, which he studies a moment before looking up from the river bank. "Humph" he lets out the sound of a low rushing breeze, "Must be it!" He stands and heaves the pack onto his back, but rather than hang off his back, it just extenuates the hump of his unnatural back.

Under his black cloak, Harnet pulls the dark hood around face, he mutters to himself as he shuffles off the boat, his face though seems to naturally look to the floor, it is an effort to for him to look up and stone walled fort. Although the journey has been uneventful, he has noticed some characters that look as out of place here, as he does. He has kept his eye on those whose armor looked strong and used, and watches as they make their way, nodding his head as they go.

Strange companions of the journey, and now one even seems to call on the spirits of kobolds, let us hope that they do not all hanker after the rewards I seek. He slowly follows the rest, and upon reaching the guards, stops to look upon the gate and fort beyond. "It is getting late and I am tired after this journey, I shall be in the inn. Is it as comfortable as it looks?" He nods at a guard and continues his slow pace into the inn, muttering as he goes, "No doubt this is the last of luxury that I will get for many a day now, tis best I enjoy it while I can." He orders a goblet of fine wine, before he sets about organising his stay, a room and a meal, plus some wine.

As he sits at the table he once more finds the document, laying it on the table and studying it, it appears to have a reference to Rappan Athuk.

Got a job interview tomorrow in London until quite late, so probably won't be able to post....just so you know.

Bristleback’s Inn is the sort of place one would expect to find in a remote settlement. A cracked and peeling wooden sign creaks from its iron bracket by the door, showing a picture of a wild boar in badly-faded paint. It is an old building, small for an inn, and is not in the best of repair.

Upon entering you are greeted by a smiling middle aged woman. " Welcome to Zelkor's ferry. I'm Amelia, and my husband Odo and I are the owners of this inn. I'm sorry all of you must be weary after the long boat ride, come take a seat by the fireplace." her light-blue dress sways as she turns and points to the fireplace. You hear a small shriek coming from the waitress across the room upon seeing the goblin. "I'm sorry for Ysbel over there, goblins aren't exactly friendly around these parts."

" Tallie come help me serve everyone." A slim blond haired girl emerges from the kitchen with bottles in hand and starts serving everybody their choice of ale. While serving Tallie remarks" There's plenty to do around these parts if adventure is what you're looking for. Just be careful I've seen plenty like yourselves who were never to be seen again, Papa Bristle over there used to be like you I'm sure he has plenty of stories."

That's fine thanks for letting me know.

Erigga holds her mug with the 'ale', smelling it and finally taking a sip...

Piss again...

She sighs but continues to drink it, examining the men in the inn.

A cursed goblin? What the hell is IT doing here? He may be talking and acting like people, but I'll never trust it... two barbarians, even if they do not look like the rage inside them. Not sure how they will handle themselves... and is that a man? Hard to tell, but he makes me uneasy, not sure why though.

She pauses her thoughts to answer the shoanti.

"My feet led me here... actually a boat, but before that, my feet."

She thought for a while, regarding the halfling's offer.

Hum... if this place is as dangerous as we heard, a little help would be nice... only if we could have some better companions...

"I and uncle Igneous here came for gold... we left Taggoret to see the world, but it is better to see it with your pockets full. If you want to join us, there is no problem, since you..." Erigga points to Red Feather. "... seeks only to confront the evil spirits and you..." she points to Morthak. "... seeks only to put the dead to rest, you need no gold, right?"

She ignores the goblin for now and makes no comment towards the strange man in robes.

Red feather's rumor: Three old crones are said to live along the coast, and for a price of gold and blood, they can let you see into the past and future.

Morthak's rumors: Some of the tunnels dug by the giant rats of the complex lead to interesting places. Some lead nowhere.

A magical pool leads to a wishing well. If one casts a magic item into it, he would get a wish.

You hear a deep voice coming from the kitchen " Gold? you blokes would be lucky to leave alive." A big burly looking man starts setting down plates for everyone's meals. "Hey pops I'm sure these guests would love to hear your stories."

"Adventurers?" An elderly man slowly walks to a chair nearby and sits down. so yer interested in rappan athuk, eh? you see a smile begin to show. "I used to be one of the best fighters there was round these parts, before that thing caught me sleeping." he then shows his missing arm and maimed eye.

"You know there is a wee little dungeon almost in sight of our watchtowers? They call it the mouth of doom, oh my friends and I began there years ago. Fun little place starts to get the blood flowing but ohh it doesn't compare to the legend."

"Rappan athuk now that's where the fun begins. We were smart we didn't go through the front like all the others we took our time and went through mouth of doom straight inside Rappan itself. Once down there we had trouble finding where to go, dahm cave was so dark we couldn't see our hands over our face. Then it began, we starting fighting through cave after cave filled with undead and other nasties of the sort and ohhhhh we found a worm the size of this inn right here, our bard thought he could just slip by and snatch the treasure without out it even knowing poor little thing didn't last a second."

He drinks from a mug brought to him. "Ahhhh nice little water never hurt, anyways the most vile things you can think of live there and don't bet there is only huge creatures we had to fight an army of these little mushrooms and boy do they pack a punch our mage wouldn't last a minute surrounded by those things. This is where it all went wrong, crossed a rickety old bridge and to our behold one of those magical skeletons." He starts thinking to himself." Ahhh a lich that's what it was called the thing was ruthless summoning so much fire I thought I died and went to hell, We all ran as far as we could only 3 of us making it. We thought we found a perfect place to rest but oh were we wrong. Our little "oasis" turned out to be guarded by these stone bulls who released some type of gas that turned us to stone. Those things got my buddy the worst got his legs frozen and just trampled over him nothing we could do those things got my swinging arm too managed to clip me while my arm was turned to stone. Our wizard heard from outside and managed to take us both to the surface safely that idiot went back there to see if anybody was alive, haven't seen him since."

Pops begins to stretch out his back making audible cracking noises. If you be wanted to explore that hell-hole let me give you some tips, you always need a wizard those things are your life-blood in there. Fire is ye best friend down there always good choice with the living dead ones and ohh is there a lot. If you want to go anywhere you're going to need rope and lots of it no such things as stairs down there. Of course how can I forget light and I'm not talking about a torch while they are useful in a pinch you need something with both your hands free."

Pops slowly stands up with cane in hand and begins to walk towards the one of the resting rooms. "That's it for me younguns I'm beginning to get tired." He then turns around with a serious expression on his face. "Do not go down the well." He then resumes his walk to a room.

At the words of 'Pops', Harnet smiles. He slowly packs his papers away and takes a long sip from his goblet. drawing himself to his full hunchbacked height, he walks slowly towards the fire, watching the yellow and reds of the flames intermingle. The light from the flames is lost in the dark folds of the strangers cloak "Erriga, Mr Cobalt and all, if you take our hosts advice, I, Harnet, could be a friend and aid to your adventure. As a master of the arcane, I may be invaluable for you to accomplish your goals. I will help for a price, all that is arcane is mine, and my share of the gold and treasures would seem fair. For that I will use my magic to aid your adventure, but I expect you to protect me, so I can bring my magics to bear." He brings his thin lips into a smile, as his eye catch a glint of red from the fire, as he nods at the group.

At that he looks around the room, making sure that none are watching, he casts a simple spell, Harnet extends his arm towards the fire and his hand seems to haze and blur, as the air congeals around his hand an it hovers away from his dirty fleshy appendage, before moving into the fire and taking a red hot ember. "I know it is dangerous, uncle Igneous, but we are not the only ones taking risks... if they do not watch our back, we do not hold the nasties and they get eaten... we are both warriors and could withstand any creature flinging at us, but a trap or a well placed magic could be our end. I have heard that some wizards have magical companions, though I have never heard of one with one of the goblin folk as one of those. It must be hard to control one with such bad intentions... and I can't imagine how hard it must be to keep him from being lynched. He must be a great sorcerer indeed.

He listens intently to the man speaking, and tries to remember his advice. When he mentions the well he really perks up. Great. My one clue and I'm advised not to go down it... still in my visions I went up it, so perhaps there is hope yet.

Igneous raises an eyebrow at the Goblin whispering a response to Erigga, "Aye, he goes first or we may go boom. Yer words are wise beyond yer years lass, if that shriveled human is correct, we'll all need each other".

The dwarf stands a speaks, "Fire, axes, and magic. Perhaps together we shall vanquish what we find ere this place, s' long as we do not go down the well eh? A toast to us, the... harumppph. A group of adventurers needs a strong name else how will the Bards sing takes o' err battles?!"

The fireplace is dimming to a low ember, and the noise from the inn has died out.

Odo pushes through the kitchen doors and puts out the fireplace. "Alright lassies I think it's time to call it a night." He then points to all the empty rooms available. "Take your pick and have a good night's rest, might be the last you see in a while."

This is probably the last safe spot in a couple hundred miles so take all the time you need talking to the locals, trying to get more info, etc.

While here you do not need to travel as a group as long as it's inside or right outside this town.

If everybody but a few wants to leave they can continue roleplaying as if it has already happened.

Once you have all decided to leave I'm going to need character sheets completed but until then feel free to change them as long as you let me know.

Harnet drops the hot ember into the goblin's hand, smiling as he does so. "If it's too hot for you, let me take it, so I can return it to its brethren." he giggles enjoying the moment relishing any hurt on the goblin. "Indeed Malazzesh, fire is your friend!"

Once the show is over, returns to his table, retrieving his goblet and returning to the gathered adventurers. "So what do you plan, Erigga? I would sleep on it, and test ourselves before we go into the deadly depths of Orcus' domain. We can enjoy some time in this rough house, which as 'Pops' said will be luxurious compared with our nights ahead. Before I venture with you, perhaps Erigga should know your worth" he says pointedly at the Shoati tribesmen. His eyes narrowing as he looks the wildmen up and down, wondering how they might be of use, before his eyes take on a jovial look, as spies Malazzesh, "No playing with fire whilst we sleep, I can wake of my own accord without some flaming blast."

"Dwarf" he says with pomp to Igneous Cobalt "I hope you won't blunt your axe getting wood for our little fiery friend, I expect its blade is best used on our enemies." He raises his goblet to Ignaeous, recognizing the dwarven liking for drinking.

Going to his backpack again, Harnet attempts to pick it up, but decides it too heavy for carrying so starts to drag it cross to the common room beds. He tries each mattress in turn to find one that is most comfortable and chooses it and prepares for sleep.

It's safe to say that it's morning. You all are free to do what you would like.

From the night before, oops.

Malazzesh inspects the ember eagerly and, much to the consternation of everyone witnessing, juggles it before placing it back in the fire. His hands seem no worse the wear for it, and it's clear that they've grown blackened and callused from similar, regular encounters.

When you wake up, you already find Malazzesh up, staring intently at the sunrise. "Big ball of fire so beautiful! No other goblins like looking at it. Other goblins are stupid."

Night Before

"Me axe blade'll not dull Wizard. Just make sure ye have enuff spells to fling fire and what ev'r else that we be needin' to carve though tha' dungeon!"

Morning Of

Igneous wakes up to find the Goblin staring at the sun. At the Goblins words the Dwarf clasps him on the back, "Many Dwarves think the same too much livin' in tunnels I s'ppose". Igneous sits next to the Goblin watching the sun rise.

When the Others Wake

"I o'heard there do be a wizard near ta' our objective that'll assist us if'n we destroy beasties in tha' dungeon".

"We should visit the 'Mouth of Doom.' It is nearby, if what that old man said is true. Doom is only one kind of destiny; my lady rules over all fates, so the name does not frighten me."

Morthak asks around to get directions to this "mouth of doom."

Diplomacy (gather information): 1d20 ⇒ 4

But probably Morthak seems too weird for the locals to talk to him. :)

You can try talking to individual npc's Morthak.

In the early morning hours, Red Feather decides to take the old man's advise, and stock up on some rope, and something for light. He heads towards Rasmus Pye's Trading post for supplies.

On the way there he sees something that makes him pinch himself to make sure he's not spirit walking. Is that a Dwarf and Goblin sitting together like old chums watching the sun rise? What has this world come to?

He will wait to see who he meets, and might get info from at the shop. If nobody useful he will seek out the old man for advise on how to find the "Mouth of Doom", and sketch out the directions on a piece of parchment.

The Night before

Erigga nods at the wizard's suggestions. "I fought along the dwarves all my life and I know how the think and fight, thus you can expect me and uncle Igneous to fight as one. From the barbarians of the east I only saw they yelling and rushing blind into the fights and from the goblins, the generally scream and die... never saw any hairy halfling before though..."

She paused for a moment before continuing.

"This way, I think the only way we'll be able to make it is to know how we fight before rushing into the unknown. If you all agree, I would like you to show me your skills tomorrow."

In the Morning

Erigga sees the dwarf and the goblin sit side by side. "Careful uncle, you do not know where it wandered... you might end up with fleas..."

She eats her breakfast and readies her shield and armor, waiting for the others to show her how they fight.

If the goblin manages to touch me... nevertheless, there is no chance of this happening. Oh and I hope the barbarian is not a crazy one...

Harnet wakes after the sunrays have warmed the day slightly, he raises his head, blinking and looking around, quietly calling "Darc .... Darc!" A black shape flutters in through an open window and flies u into the rafters above Harnet. Rubbing his eyes and then brushing small black horns that protrude from under his long dark hair, normally hidden by the hood of his cloak, the wizard smiles up at the bat above him.

Rising, he pulls the cloak around him and the hood back in place. "Odo, where is Odo? Has he our breakfast, I and Darc are hungry." the wizard calls impatiently, as he marches around the the inn.

"Odo, where can I buy scrolls of the arcane, to help protect me from the dangers of these parts Either that or can I find someone with knowledge of the sparking crystals of rock? I would visit in case I can find something I need. Is there anything I can do for you Odo, whilst I'm out?"

As he eats his fruit and drinks the milk, he ponders what 'Pops' told in his story, was he telling the truth. If such was the case, Harnet could do with spells to counter the undead, despite the fact he found such necromantic spells difficult to learn and cast.

Looking out the window, he sees the dwarf and goblin sitting in the sun. 'And those from the depths stood transfixed by the brightness of the day, the world above ground. They looked and wondered as the sun blinded them so that the world returned to darkness'....ahhh the words of the book ... D'rath - black eyed elf - Death has no eyes. Harnet silently chuckles to himself.

He turns back to see one of the Shoanti head off, he waves at the tribesman's back, smiling.

To those just rising, he continues "I suppose you gave no more thought how we might discover each others talents, before we descend into Orcus's realm?"

Apologies if so of this doesn't quite make sense, but crossed with a couple of other posts ... that's life on the boards ..

As the others rise and Erigga makes her comment Igneous chuckles, "Had fleas once, terrible time THAT was".

He considers the Wizards words. "Mayhap ya c'n summon some o' yer beasties an we'll fight 'em arena style. Tha' way we'll get the feel fer workin' tagether..."

Harnet's Rumor: In the lower levels, spells cannot be regained due to the evil powers in this place. Conserve spells on deep treks.

To anyone going to Rasmus Pye's trading post.

Walking through the settlement, you see an old but well taken care of wooden two-story building. You hear bells chiming from the door the second you walk in. " Welcome to Ramsus Pye's trading post!" A thin red-haired man exclaims behind the store's counter. " You all must be adventurers, eh? No doubt by the looks of it. Well, when you need supplies look no further then Rasmus's trading post!." He moves his hands showing all of his wares ranging from books all the way to full sets of armor. "Whatever you desire I know where to get it - within reason of course."

To harnet

"Calm your knickers breakfast is coming up."

Odo scratched his beard"Magic? Suppose the best place would be with Ramsus only real magician in this town. Although, ulman knows quite a bit about black magic. Calls himself a necromancer weird one he but he pays his rent and knows how to cure people no matter how odd his treatments are."

The wizards eyes look skyward, as he sighs at the dwarf's words, "Such ignorance of the ways of Nethys, as though all the power of the arcane is directed to fire and creating fire-breathing creatures to fight for you. I can surprise that dwarf by increasing his size and strength, then he'll understand the subtle power of the transmuter. Either that or I'll shrink him to be a wee dwarf, small enough to trip over his beard." Harnet rather disconcertedly starts to laugh, as his own thoughts.

Once finished, he considers Ignaeous "I am sure you and your better Erigga have tales to tell of your skirmishes with those who crossed you path, but with those savages, how will you fare then. It would be prudent to use your head, and practice in the relative safety of the open ground, before we find ourselves confined in the darkened places below."

......

Harnet thanks Odo before informing his acquaintances that he will be visiting the Ulman, he asks the dwarf to join him if he wants, so that he can understand that there is more to the arcane than fire and conjuring. Going to Ulman, Harnet asks the necromancer of the dangers of the undead in the caverns of Rapan Athuk and can he provide any sort of protection magic if they needed it. He asks if Ulman will help his companions, should they return in need of the arcane to return them to life.

He also asks the wizard if there is anyone in the town who deals with gems and other precious material?

Do any of us have significant wisdom, Harnet is Wis 12?

Red Feather stated that was his destination above.

To those going to Ulman.

Upon walking you see a regular wooden building slightly isolated from the rest with a well written sign that says "Infirmary".

While entering the creak of the door rings throughout the hut and through quick glances you see vials of black liquid hanging on shelfs, neatly stacked tomes bound by leather, and finally you see Ulman engrossed in his work with his pestle.

Harnet upon asking of his question replies. "I ignore that place like the plague and I recommend you do the same. He sighs "Well let me tell you what I can offer since you won't listen. I am able to cure most ailments if they are recent." Upon hearing Harnet talk about life you see a glint in his eyes and his voice becomes less monotonous. "Oh why of course I would love to help you. I love experim...." He coughs "Helping those with dire needs, although it does not come cheap and the individual has to be fresh. Now of course you must be off the gem cutter is on the opposite side. I will be waiting for your return." He smiles and waves as you leave.

To red feather

Ramsus happily rings everything up. But of course here let me get that for you. He opens the shelves behind the desk and pulls out a scroll. "One of my old regulars used to map the area before he disappeared. Tis a shame gave me the map but forgot the legend before he up and left. Still of use nonetheless and i'll let it go for a low price fo 50 gold, what do you say?"

FYI I do have a regular rope and grappling hook. I think Malazzesh planned to use regular torches because he can burn things with them.

I'm not sure if I'm present but I would be willing to chip in 10 gp. That's almost everything I have left.

Morthak will quietly tag along as people look around town. He's not looking for anything particular, just trying to get a feel for the place.

Okay, just so I get this straight:

Odo is the innkeeper of the Bristleback's Inn. His wife is Amelia.
Papa Bristle is a retired adventurer with some stories.
Rasmus is a magician but also runs the trading post.
Ulman is the town "healer" but dabbles in necromancy.

We haven't yet met:

Kalgor the gemcutter.
Big Morgan the smith.
Whoever runs the stable.
The guard captain, or any specific guards.
