Raulzig auto passes as well
"Thought we can't be the only ones here."
Raulzig will cast Haste, ensuring that the party makes quick work of the giant.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Surprise Round:

Krokod: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Lefty: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (2) + 13 = 15
Raulzig: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Ryarg: 1d20 ⇒ 11
St. Germaine: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Giant: 1d20 ⇒ 8

Before anyone else has a chance to act or St. Germaine or Krokod even has a chance to realize there's a threat, Lefty suddenly appears in a blaze of glory, scorching rays flashing toward a giant lurking in an alley. The blasts seem to hiss off the creature's skin, drawing a bellow of outrage. 100 points damage total

Lefty, you can give me a Knowledge (local) check to identify your foe. Also, I gave you a sneak attack on all three attacks. Seems to be split opinion on whether that's allowed, but my feeling is it's three attack rolls (even if they are touch attacks).

As Raulzig casts haste on the party, Ryarg assumes whirlwind form again and charges forward to attack.

The giant roars again in pain and swings a massive flaming axe at the whirlwind attacking him. It bites into Ryarg, sending swirls of flame through his form. 26 hp

Mechanics:

7d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 2, 1, 1, 3, 5) = 19

1d20 + 30 ⇒ (2) + 30 = 32
1d6 + 15 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) + 15 + (5) = 26

Giant: 124

Krokod, you didn't get to act in the surprise round, though you can cast in the first round. Don't forget you're hasted. Please post first-round actions now. St. Germaine, you still there?

Does Raulzig have to move more than 5ft. in order to have a clear shot of the giant? He has Precise Shot so is not impeded by the melee.

Raulzig, no, you can get a clear shot. Lefty, still need your action. Same with St. Germaine.

Yeah and Luck persists for 3 rounds, allowing me to use Arcane Strike for another +4 damage if something lives this long... I'm impressed myself :D

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

OK, I'm going to assume St. Germaine is gone, so we're just going to retcon out his presence and go with four players.

Round 1:

Lefty: 15
Raulzig: 13
Krokod: 13
Ryarg: 11
Giant: 8

Lefty disappears again as Raulzig unloads on the giant, his arm blurring as arrows seem to leap from his bow. The first arrow seems to shatter on the creature's armor, but the next four thud into his icy flesh, rocking him back. Oddly, though, the arrows don't seem to do as much damage as they should, the flame seeming to flicker out on his flesh. Fire resistance and DR; 40 damage total

Krokod moves toward the creature, casting his protective magic, as Ryarg, in elemental form, slams the giant. 35 gp total

Despite the punishing blows it's taken, the giant stills seems to have its fighting spirit and charges past Ryarg toward Krokod. It slams into the Kellid, forcing him back 15 feet to the fountain, where he can feel the chill from the water even through his enchanted armor. No AoO allowed from Krokod though Ryarg can take one as the giant moves past him.

Mechanic:

Giant bull rush: 1d20 + 31 ⇒ (13) + 31 = 44

Giant: 199

M Elf Rog 1/Wiz 7/Trickster 10: Init +13; Perception +24; AC 33 (), 22 () T, 26 () FF /hp 185/185, Saves F +16, R +21, W +8; +2 vs. enchantment

Lefty, once again invisible, moves a bit closer to the tunnel/staircase, a little higher to see down, but close enough to the giant to cast ray of frost (65 ft., DC 19). Is this giant resistant to cold, or immune?

This will inform his choices of energy spells later on. If it does no damage at all, his colleagues would make short work of it, anyway. If cold does nothing, he'll find energy types that will do.

Looking around for anything beyond the giant; perception: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (1) + 20 = 21

knowledge (local) to identify the giant: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 26

attack roll (luck bonus +1?): 1d20 + 15 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 15 + 1 = 33

dmg: 1d3 + 2 + 1 + 7d6 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 1 + (2, 1, 6, 5, 6, 5, 2) = 33

If it's immune to cold, and not dead, next round will be vicious.

And, he's visible again. LOL!

M Elf Rog 1/Wiz 7/Trickster 10: Init +13; Perception +24; AC 33 (), 22 () T, 26 () FF /hp 185/185, Saves F +16, R +21, W +8; +2 vs. enchantment

Actually, the DC is 20.

AoO: 1d20 + 25 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 25 + 1 = 39
damage: 2d6 + 15 ⇒ (5, 1) + 15 = 21

Ryarg then advanced on the creature, commanding Bern to do likewise. Not sure how many attacks we get, do I'll just roll them all.

Slam 1:1d20 + 25 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 25 + 1 = 33
damage: 2d6 + 15 ⇒ (1, 4) + 15 = 20
Slam 2: 1d20 + 25 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 25 + 1 = 41
damage: 2d6 + 15 ⇒ (6, 4) + 15 = 25
Hasted slam: 1d20 + 25 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 25 + 1 = 40
damage: 2d6 + 15 ⇒ (1, 1) + 15 = 17

Bern power attacks:
Bite: 1d20 + 20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 20 + 1 = 24
Damage: 4d6 + 21 ⇒ (2, 6, 6, 4) + 21 = 39
Claw 1: 1d20 + 20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 20 + 1 = 25
Damage: 2d8 + 21 ⇒ (7, 2) + 21 = 30
Claw 2: 1d20 + 20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 20 + 1 = 33
Damage: 2d8 + 21 ⇒ (3, 6) + 21 = 30
Haste bite: 1d20 + 20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 20 + 1 = 38
Damage: 4d6 + 21 ⇒ (1, 5, 4, 4) + 21 = 35

Ryarg's attacks hit as +5 weapons, Bern's as +2, if that matters.

M Elf Rog 1/Wiz 7/Trickster 10: Init +13; Perception +24; AC 33 (), 22 () T, 26 () FF /hp 185/185, Saves F +16, R +21, W +8; +2 vs. enchantment

That probably hurt.

Just wanted to double check - Clustered Shot means all the damage is pooled together before applying the DR - so that's 80 physical and 14 fire from the four shots, if I'm reading it right.

Ah, thanks, Raulzig. That does change things. I'm assuming you're taking the same action this round...

Round 2:

Lefty: 15
Raulzig: 13
Krokod: 13
Ryarg: 11
Giant: 8

Lefty, the tunnel curves too far down for you to be able to make anything out below. You blast the giant with the ray of frost, but it doesn't seem to do any damage -- you think he's likely immune to cold.

However, seconds later, five more of Raulzig's arrows slam into the creature's chest again, dropping it. It continues to breathe but just barely.

Dice rolls:

RAULZIG:

Dmg1: 1d6 + 4 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 12 = 21 + 1d6 ⇒ 6 fire
Atk2: 1d20 + 24 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 24 - 2 + 1 = 32
Dmg2: 1d6 + 4 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 12 = 17+ 1d6 ⇒ 6 fire
Atk3: 1d20 + 24 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 24 - 2 + 1 = 29
Dmg3: 1d6 + 4 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 12 = 19 + 1d6 ⇒ 4 fire
Atk4: 1d20 + 19 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 19 - 2 + 1 = 35
Dmg4: 1d6 + 4 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 12 = 22 + 1d6 ⇒ 3 fire
Atk5: 1d20 + 14 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 14 - 2 + 1 = 16
Dmg5: 1d6 + 4 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 12 = 21 + 1d6 ⇒ 5fire

My dot is gone on this thread. Just happened to see the new post. Time to PM everybody again so they know we're still going.

Got your PM. Mine's still dotted.

Got a 26 on identifying the giant. Maybe Raulzig can figure it out, if Lefty can't.

This one was immune to cold, and resistant to fire. It's not your average frost giant. It's something else.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

It's actually odd -- the thing's vulnerable to fire but also has fire resistance, which seems like a bit of dissonance to me. If you want to give me some idea what further specifics about it you'd like to know, I can try to fill them in. You can tell it's a frost giant that's been deformed in some way.

Raulzig, you believe it's “blessed” by the demon lord Kostchtchie’s. Though slower and clumsier than a normal giant, gnarled creatures are much stronger and hardier and have thick, horny skin. Both you and Lefty can ask for one specific weakness/ability/whatever.

The items area breastplate of command, and a +1 flaming burst battleaxe.

Who's got room for the loot? Not me.

Fire resistant, cold immune. How about electricity?

Ryarg could use it when enlarged into a large humanoid creature like an earth elemental. How does it work to combine natural and manufactured attacks like that? Anyone know?

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

It does not have any special protections against electricity, Lefty.

Creatures with natural attacks and attacks made with weapons can use both as part of a full attack action (although often a creature must forgo one natural attack for each weapon clutched in that limb, be it a claw, tentacle, or slam). Such creatures attack with their weapons normally but treat all of their natural attacks as secondary attacks during that attack, regardless of the attack's original type (which would mean -5 to hit, and only half strength bonus on damage).

Better off using slams only then.

okay, I'd like to know one weakness. Perhaps it would be easier if you chose one at random?
Also I guess the handy haversack wouldn't fit those items?

Can anyone follow its tracks?

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Raulzig, you believe good-aligned weapons would be very effective against it. You could probably get the axe into the haversack, but not the breastplate.

Perception/Survival (track) 15:

You can follow the giant's tracks about 160 feet to the door of a second-floor sepulcher that has been broken open in the far eastern part of the village. The ice biers inside have been crushed and the interred bodies devoured. Their equipment lies strewn about in ragged heaps of frozen cloth and metal, along with newer bones and fresh splashes of frozen blood.

However, as you followed the giant's tracks, you also noticed about 80 feet from the fountain a small snowdrift bearing a single, recent humanoid footprint. Examination reveals it to be the boot-clad footprint of a Medium creature of slight build.

Air Ryarg returns to normal Ryarg form, and bends down to follow the track.

He auto passes the DC, and silently points everything in the spoiler out to folks. He has Bern sniff the footprint to track it by scent.

Lefty uses his message spell to talk quietly. It's possible we've bypassed something, Krokod, but I think we should move down. Time is an issue, and if we can surprise any guardians before they raise any alarms, that's to our favor. You can all hear me, but not each other.
