Koremar could feel that his trusty sword had little effect on the elemental so he changed tactics. He called upon his blades innate powers and and fueld it with the heat of flames as his left hand waved frantically to cast Force Punch.
immediate action to spend 1 Arcane point to make Mai'Tahl flaming
Content that noone is in any immediate danger of drowning, Cyrus lashes out on the closest elemental again, hoping to finish the fight quickly before they attempt another dirty trick.
Ace realises that chargeing into the water probably wasn't the smartest thing he done. He does his best to try and stay over the surface and minimize the tugging of the rope.
Hmmm...not sure what I can do here. To make sure I understand, she is holding me up while water pours over me and a water elemental is pounding me. If she lets go, then it looks as though I would fall down into the pool of water below? If so, I think it may be best for me to drop and take that damage (4d6?). Is all of that correct?
You're currently stuck in a vortex. If Abigail lets go of you, you'd have to make your swim checks to get to shore/avoid being swept down the 50-foot falls. You can certainly risk taking that damage but you could also make it to shore or try whatever else you want to do.
Sacha, unable to reach the elemental, but finally able to make some headway against the strong current, reaches shore instead, finding the safety of solid ground for a moment beneath her paws.
Kregimie, with Abigail's help, finally manages to break free of the vortex and make it to shore himself, wet and wounded but otherwise undaunted.
The whistling steam bursting forth from Koremar's slash almost sounds like a scream as the elf's flaming blade and arcane power rock the elemental, sending it flying backward. 34 hp damage
Apparently undaunted, though, it surges back, a massive wave leaping up to slam into the magus.6 hp damage
The second elemental, its prey apparently escaped, suddenly stops whirling. Instead two pseudopods of water leap out and smash into Abigail, though neither do more than further soak the priestess.
Cyrus misses with his first swing, but manages to find some resistance when he swings a second time, stabbing through what would seem to be the heart of the badly injured elemental. It's mounded wave form collapses back into the rest of the rushing water, the threat seemingly ended.
However, Ace pulling on the rope unbalances him and he loses his footing in the strong current, sending both master and hound toward the falls.
If both Ace and Cyrus make their DC 20 Swim checks, they can get to shore or try to swim upstream.
If Ace fails to make a Swim check to get to shore, he'll go over. That will force Cyrus to make a DC 25 Swim to keep them from both going over and falling.
If Ace makes his Swim check but Cyrus fails, Ace can get to shore but Cyrus will then have to make a Swim check in the following round to avoid going over and possibly pulling Ace with him.
Koremar rocked slightly from the wave hitting into him but he dismissed it quickly. He decided to protect himself a little better and called to mind a defensive spell but lost it in the heat of battle. He still had the prescence of mind to swing his fire wreathed Mai'tahl.
Abigail steps back a bit from the shore, hoping to force the elemental out of the water, and takes her bow out. Sacha follows her closely as she commands it to guard her. She then fires at the biggest elemental.
Longbow: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28; 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13; +1 hit and damage if Point Blank Shot applies.
Abigail's arrow flies into the watery creature, seeming to stick for a moment before it is swept away by the current. 9 hp damage PB shot applies; also, only one elemental left.
Koremar's swing, perhaps thrown off by the failure of his spell, goes wide, flames hissing through the mist hovering over the rushing river and casting an eerie glow, but doing no damage.
Kregimie stabs at the elemental but seems to hit only an actual wave, not the creature itself.
It again pounds Koremar, hitting the elf twice with massive waves that rock his slender frame. 21 points damage total
Koremar was starting to feel the effects of the multiple slams from the wave creature. He focused his ever alert mind at the task at hand and cast a spell that he was particularly fond of as he slashed with Mai'tahl's flaming blade delivering the spell with the attack.
Abigail lets fly a series of two shafts, simply aiming for the centre of the last elemental.
A bit confused now on who's where... Not sure if Sacha can act. If you could get a crude map, that would help.
Longbow rapid shot with PBS:
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20; 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23; 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Abigail's arrows fly wide of the watery form, the shafts quickly being pulled downstream in the current.
Koremar again blasts the creature with steel and spell, sending waves of shock through it, causing his own hair to rise wildly as the current runs through the water. 30 points of damage
Kregimie stabs it again, feeling the slightest bit of resistance as his spear scores.
The elemental again tries to slam Koremar, hoping to finish off this interloper in its watery realm, connecting once with the Elven magus. 7 hp damage
Unable to resist the pull of the dog tied to him, Cyrus also goes over the edge, both falling to the pool below. 22 hp damage from the fall
Abigail fires two more arrows into the watery form and it suddenly dissipates, splashing back into the rest of the water as if it had never been.
The area falls still again, except for the crash of the falls over the drop, the eerie mist continuing to shroud everything as it bubbles forth from the pool.
Thanks, Koremar. Hopefully nothing bad has happened to him in real life. For the moment, we'll continue on without them, as they're at the bottom of the falls. Hopefully he'll come back soon, but if not, we'll handwave that they didn't survive the drop; if you'd normally go check on them, let's just assume that happens and that either they're with you if he comes back or there was nothing you could do if not.
Abigail lets a smile crawl back on her face: "This was costly... Now let's check this waterfall. Kregimie, do you still want to go ahead? Perhaps we should tie a rope to you? I'll cover you."
"Indeed I will forge ahead, but our friends have suffered great loss..." the gnome says gravely. "Perhaps this would be a time for healing the wounded?"
I'm doing OK, 52/78 HP, but Koremar could probably use some healing. If the three (or more) of us are all down, perhaps a channel healing? ;)
Koremar sloughed from the water to the bank of the pool and knelt with his sword's tip burried in the sand and leaning against the hilt. He was winded and peered around searching for the rest of his companions.
"Yes Kregimie, wise advice. Gather 'round..." She closes her eyes and whispers her thanks for the bounties of this earth and the communities of men, and asks for strength and temperance in the defense of it.
Koremar, for the moment, just pretend Cyrus is here; if he doesn't come back online, we'll retcon that and pretend he didn't survive the fall and replace him.
Let me know what you want to do post-healing, all.
"Thank you Abigail. Yes, tie me off until I get atop." Kreg replies. He will use some ropes tie around himself and give the other end to someone strong, then throw his grappling hook to the rocky part beside the top of the next waterfall.
As Kreg stares at the loot in the rusty box, he feels a tug on the rope and remembers his friends down below. He walks over to the ledge and finds a good place to tie his end of the rope off to. After which he goes over to the ledge and yells "Come on up! I've found something!"
Abigail, how are you planning to get Sacha across? She's going to have to make Swim checks to get to the cave. You can use the rope to get yourself across fairly easily, though, as can Koremar.
You all make it across the pool below the waterfalls into the small cave behind the northern cascade. Inside, you find 25 gray rune-covered rocks, each looking like it weighs about 2-3 pounds. You also see a rusty iron lockbox that's open, spilling out with coins, a handaxe, a longsword, a couple potion bottles and a wand.
The magus will relay his findings and muse as he concentrates on the items. The staones in particular.
I wonder what these stones do exactly? Maybe we could destroy them and stop this mist. I lack the power to negate their magic but we must do something. Ideas?
