"I am glad you have proven yourself a better man, Vandar. The Stolen Lands can use every good man they can find," Lirisial says as she prepares for their journey back to the fort.

"Yes, and it has saved us a great deal of rope", Treshiell adds from the background.

"I am interested in finding out who the old man this stag lord takes orders from. He who had terrified them with his eyes. I would like to meet him. You can tell alot from the eyes."

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

"So how do we proceed? I am thinking secure the alcohol once we get back to the fort as it may end up being useful for trying to get into the fort when we reach that point for one thing. The other thing is to check out the temple they mentioned before doing much else; it might still have sealed vaults that will yield items and or information."

For DM:

Draelen greets Kesten properly, if a bit stiffly, as he has the look of a young noble son looking to make his name in the army. Doubtless he is inexperienced in the ways of war, only earning his command through his noble name. He may well wind up ordering his soldiers, including Draelen, to their deaths.

”Greetings Kesten, I am Draelen Wolfkin of the Knights of Silverhall. I’m grateful for the company of you and your Sirens on the road, it could well be an eventful journey.“

He has a warmer smile for the swords-women. ”You certainly would make any man quiver at the sight of you, either from fear of your sword arms or awe of your beauty. Even my war hound Ivory can sense that you are not to be trifled with, but your attentions are well worth winning.“

In general, he’ll maintain this behavior while travelling with them. He’s cool, although polite to Kesten unless he proves himself as more than a spoiled nobleman. He’s more friendly with the Sirens, hopefully winning their trust and respect as a comrades at arms.

Rupert claps Vandar on his shoulder happily, hearing that the ex-bandit will be sticking around for at least a little while. "Ah, that's good news to m'ears, mate! At least now ah' have somebody with which to play a few games of luck!" To the other bandits, as they take their leave, he says, "Ah' can only hope we meet again someday, someday soon, an' that the group of yeh' find your way back to these parts t'help us make a difference."

After gathering the things they need together, he is ready to depart for the Fort.

For Draelen:

From what you can tell, Kesten seems little more than the spoiled noble you fear, though you will admit the sparring training sessions he holds each evening show he does have some skill with a blade, enough so you don't feel certain you would be able to defeat him, even with Ivory's help. Outside of that, though, he seems more interested in flirting with his soldiers, who you suspect he picked based more on their looks than their experience, though all show some natural skill.

Regardless, they generally make the journey south a pleasant one, and the miles pass quickly before you reach the wooden walls of Fort Kazmir. You are welcomed by the trading post proprieters, Stevic and his wife Taerine, and the Sirens soon have tents set up near the stables inside the palisade. Despite Taerine's explanation that the group of adventurers you've been commanded to join recently rousted a group of bandits -- their bodies are hanging from the walls, a ripe odor beginning to rise from them -- Kesten orders a watch, having one of the Sirens watching from the gate at all tmes.

For the rest of the party:

Vandar smiles at the praise from Lirisial and Rupert. "I apparently owe you my life, and it seems like my fortunes might rise by staying with you. A chicken won't give you any eggs if you don't give it any seed, as my mother used to say."

The group has an uneventful ride north, despite exhaustion from a second night of little sleep gnawing at them. The wooden walls of Fort Kazmir, with a thin plume of smoke rising from inside, seem a welcome sight.

As you approach, however, a woman's voice calls out. "Halt, in the name of the Swordlords of Restov. Who are you and what is your business at Fort Kazmir!" The setting sun glints off the scale male worn by the young woman, and the crossbow she has aimed in your direction.

For Draelen:

You are relaxing after the dinner Taerine made, as Kesten spars with Gaelle, one of his soldiers, when you hear Marcine's warning cry. Kesten immediately begins moving toward the gate with Gaelle as the other two Sirens rush to grab their arms from their tents in the face of the possible threat.

At this point, you probably don't need to worry about spoilers, since you'll all be able to hear what's going on, if not necessarily see it.

Treshiell tilts her head to the side and gazes into the womans eyes. "We live here. Have you moved in as well?"

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

"Returning stolen goods after dealing with the ruffians who took it. After that, a good long nap. You must be the guards Stevic sent for." Edrukk replies quietly as he barely stifles a yawn, eager for a good bit of sleep after 2 straight days of travel and little sleep.

Upon hearing the warning from the sentry, Draelen grabs his bow and axe that were leaning against the wall next to him and races to the top of the wall at the gate. As he runs, thoughts race through his head "Have the bandits returned? What of the other adventurers that killed the bandits hanging from the wall now?"

Reaching a vantage point where he can see the group outside the gate, he thinks that they certainly look dangerous. But after a few minutes, he puts together the story that Stevic had told over dinner with the description of the members of the party outside the gates and recognizes them as the other chartered explorers. Under his breath, he whispers to Marcine "Well, they certainly look the worse for wear, I'm glad our journey was easier." However, he waits for Kesten to give the order to allow them inside the gates of the Fort.

A blond man with curly hair lowers his sword as you announce who you are. "That may be," he says, "but we'll need to see the Swordlords' charter, to verify your identity."

Just as he holds out his hand, Stevic runs out. "You don't need to see any crows-kissed charter! These are the men and women who stopped the bloody bandits while we were still flaming waiting for you to bloody show up!"

The man eyes the trading post owner for a moment, before turning to you all with a wide grin, sheathing his sword. "Very well, then, welcome back. My name is I'm Kesten Garess, of the Brevoy Garesses, and I've been instructed to come here and provide protection for this fort. These are my Stetven Sirens," he says, gesturing to the four armed women with him.

"That's Marcine up there," he says, pointing to an attractive human woman with short-cropped brown hair on the palisade who is putting up her crossbow. "And this is Gaelle, Hari and Dhavika," as he gestures to a woman apparently in her mid-30s with red hair pulled back in a pony tail, a slender Tian and a young half-orc who gives you a wide grin.

"Oh, and that there is Drebin and his dog," he finishes, gesturing to a half-orc man. "I believe he was ordered to come join you in your mapping."

His eyes scan the group, stopping on the elven woman and witch in the party. "Greeting, ladies, it's a pleasure to meet you!"

"Tis good to know that we can get a full night's sleep now that you are here. You shouldn't be bothered by bandits for a few days at least; we removed the leadership for the immediate area, and recovered several crates of furs and alcohol." Edrukk talks between yawns as he unloads the recovered goods, except for one of the bottle of alcohol, into the storage area before leading Patience into the stable, setting her up comfortably, and than heading to the bunk house with one well wrapped bottle of alcohol in his bag to get some sleep.

Female Elf Cleric (Desna) 1

"Quite a warm welcome, I should say," Lirisial says with a touch of sarcasm. "Well met, fellow travelers. I am Lirisial Starsong, priestess of the Song of Spheres, may her light guide us all."

Drebin? Sure it's not Draelen? :)

Treshiell rides through the gate not paying any attention to the guards, though Thaal's eyes seem to follow Marcine as she witch enters the camp. Treshiell tilts her head and seems to listen to the viper on her shoulder. Then she nods. "Yes, i think you are right. She should smile more."

The witch dismounts and fixes her gaze on Kesten. "How long will you be staying here? Do you have a charter like ours?"

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Kesten said Drebin. Sorry, should've made clear that was his mistake, not mine. : )

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

"Ah, we have company? Splendid! Ah' do appreciate knowin' our beds'll be safe tonight. Let's get these goods unloaded so we can catch up on some rest."

Rupert helps Edrukk with the unloading, fatigue taking away much of his typical exuberance, though he tries his hardest to maintain a jovial demeanor when speaking with the newcomers.

"The Stetven Sirens, you say? Ah' can only hope that they are as deadly as they are striking, an' we'll have no trouble keepin' this fort outta the hands of bandits!"

Assuming Kesten doesn't require any help, Rupert will go straight to bed as soon as they're done unloading and introducing themselves.

Draelen introduces himself, making an emphasis on correcting Kesten's mistake. "Greetings, I'm Draelen Wolfkin of Silverhall. Have no fear of my wolfhound Ivory, she's quite well-trained and can even be friendly as long as you mean no threat to us."

He helps the returning adventurers unload their supplies and makes small-talk about their fight with the bandits and other adventures, simultaneously sizing them up and present a friendly demeanor.

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

"Well met, Draelen. Ah' understand you'll be joinin' us out here on the frontier -- 'tis good to have you and Ivory with us. Forgive meh' for bein' so tired, but we'll talk more in the mornin, assumin' we don't get overrun by bandits durin' the night."

"A pleasure to meet you Lord Garess, and your soldiers too." Orin says with a smile at Marcine. "With you all here to protect the fort we will have less to worry about reprisals against Stevic and his lady for our forays against the bandits hereabouts" Turning to Draelin he extends his hand "Well met, Master Draelin. An extra set of hands" and looking down at Ivory and scratching between her ears "and teeth will be most appreciated. Lord Garess says that you were ordered out here to assist us with taming this land, you wouldn't, by chance, have your charter with you, would you?" he says trying not to sound too distrustful.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Kesten gives you a wide smile, Lirisial. "I have no doubt that her light shall guide us all, my dear, though I fear I shall be blinded by your beauty!"

He blinks once or twice at Treshiell's bluntness, but the smile never fades. "How long shall I be staying here? I'm afraid I don't know my dear, but as long as you remain here, it will be no hardship. They didn't tell me that I would find such beauties out in the wilderness.

"I'm afraid my charter is not the same as yours, alas. I've been ordered to provide support to this fort and make sure no more bandits ever threaten it again, but should you ever desire my company, at any time of day or night, you have but to ask."

As the group begins unloading its spoils, Stevic and Taerine approach, looking over the items. "If you're interested in selling any of that, I'd be willing to take it off your flaming hands."

Taerine watches for a moment, before asking if anyone was able to find her wedding ring.

After the work is finished, with Rupert adjourning to bed, Kesten offers him some reassurance: "Have no fear, friend Ronald! My Sirens and I will make sure you sleep as well as a babe that has sucked at its mother's teat!"

Feel free to role-play for a while, with Draelen's introduction and several other folks at the trading post. The night will pass uneventfully, so even if your characters are going to sleep immediately, you can decide what you'd do in the morning. You'll presumably need to decide your next step once you wake up as well.

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

Edrukk, seeing that the crowd was going to make sure he was not going to get sleep yet, decides he may as well take care of the stuff, talking with Stevic on that front, but holding back on final disposal of the alcohol until Rupert could have a chance to claim at least a bottle of it. I don't recall anything about finding the ring, but if we did, Edrukk would certainly return it. Otherwise he would let her know that they were still on the lookout for it. After that he will briefly introduce himself to the newest member of the expedition as well as the boastful, but hopefully compentent, leader of the guard contigent sent to protect the fort.

Nope, we haven't found the ring (yet)

Treshiell ignores Kesten and sits down opposite the wolfhound Ivory. She gazes into the creatures eyes and moves her head back and forth in a calm, hypnotic pattern. A few seconds later her head stops and the witch extends her hand to the wolf. "It is nice to meet you, Ivory. I am Treshiell."

Without turning her head the witch adresses Draelen. "She says that you have treated her well, Drebin Draelen Wolfkin of Silverhall. Do you have any more names we should know?", she asks.

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

Rupert goes to bed unceremoniously, winking at Edrukk as he slips a bottle of booze into his pack before retiring to his room. In the morning, he leaves his room in high spirits to face the next day. He arrives downstairs smiling and says, "G'morning folks, yeh slept well ah' trust? What d'we have on our agenda today: more bandit huntin', or do we have some explorin' to do?"

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

Edrukk enjoys a good long sleep, waking up mid morning. After checking on Patience, he sits down for a late breakfast after finishing up any remaining business with Stevic and gets to know his newest traveling companion better. "I apologize if I was a bit short last night, but sleep deprivation will do that to the best of people. As I said before, I am Edrukk, traveling bard seeking to establish a new home for himself and other like minded dwarves." When everyone is awake and ready to discuss the next move, "I say we do some exploring; that ruined temple seems like a good place to start. As much as I would love to march right up to the Stag Lord's fort, I don't think we are the best position to do that just now, and I doubt there will be much bandit activity north to the Thorn River after our raid on Kressle's camp."

Upon Orin's request, Draelen presents his charter, albeit a bit indignantly. "Certainly my good yeoman, here is the charter, clearly spelled out by the Swordlords, I assume the same as yours is."

Draelen shrugs and grins at Treshiell's introduction. "No other names that I no of, my lady, but I'll be sure to let you know if I'm given any more. Oh, and she responds better if you have some raw meat in that hand of yours."

When planning the next morning, Draelen makes short inquiries, hopefully enough to learn about what the group has accomplished so far. "So this Stag Lord is some sort of leader of these bandits I take it? Well, it would be best to take out the leader if we can, but who knows how many men he has at his command.... perhaps a war of attrition is best for now, if we bring enough of his followers to justice, morale will fall among their ranks. Besides, it sounds like there's a lot of unexplored territory close by to be mapped. I agree that this ruined temple sounds like a good place to start, if we can find it."

Orin accepts the parchment and reads through it. After handing it back, the gruff woodsman apologizes "I'm sorry to have been so rude, but you can never be too careful. Having spent the last several years travelling alone, hunting those who would prey on those weaker than themselves, makes a man overly cautious"

That evening after dinner Orin will spend some time with an oilcloth and block of wax working on his bow. After finishing his ministrations to that weapon, he will pull out a whetstone and begin honing the nicks out of the blade of his greatsword. After his weapons and armor have been cared for he will wander off to bed.

In the morning, Orin will join the others for breakfast and strategy session. "Although nothing would give me greater pleasure than taking this 'Stag Lord" out of the picture I think it would be better to find out more about what's going on in these lands around here first. After all our charter calls for us to explore and map this area, not go charging hither and yon after this and that. We know where this would be bandit king's stronghold is and if we can pick off a few more of his lieutenants before we face him and this creepy old guy so much the better."

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Come morning, the Tian girl, Hari, is nowhere to be found. The others joining you for breakfast -- Kesten, Marcine, Dhavika and Stevic and Taerine -- appear unconcerned though as they join you for breakfast, while Gaelle remains on the palisade, keeping watch on the surrounding area.

Not sure how much you'll relay of your adventure to the bandit camp and its details, so I didn't want to write their reactions yet, but they'll definitely have some comments depending on what you say.

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

Edrukk would have kept out the details, but told them that Kressle, the apparent lieutenant for this region, was dead, and that regular bandits had been allowed to leave after they shared everything they knew. Details about the battle and specifics about the Stag Lord and his fort he would have left out.

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

"Say now, where's that other girl gone off to? Hari, was it?" Rupert inquires, quizzically scratching at his slightly-stubbled chin. He sits down for breakfast, and tries to make small talk with those around him.

In response to Draelen's discussion of strategy, he says "Well, I daresay we had some success with the last group of bandits. We sure put that Kressle menace down quickly--by th'sounds o'things, at least, haha!" Rupert then proceeds to tell the story of his swift defeat, claiming, "As soon as ah' saw that mad woman's glare, ah' knew ah' was in for some trouble. An' then, would yeh believe it, the one openin' she gave me, ah' somehow managed t'slip up my grip on the ol' sword, an' the next thing ah' remember is wakin' up on the ground next to her, after Orin an' Edrukk dealt with her. Lesson learned, but still ah' don't imagine anyone from the Stag Lord's crew will want to cross us if'n we keep up this hard work!"

Rupert will say nothing more about their encounter with the bandits, unless someone actually questions him about what happened.

Day before
Treshiell turns over her palm and studies her empty hand. "Oh, i will think about that next time", she says and looks back at Ivory. Giving the wolf a respectfull look, the witch stands up and curtseys elegantly then turns and walks to the guest house.

Morning
"Do you have a plan for finding these lieutenants?", Treshiell asks Orin. Her eyes are fixed at Taal who's devouring the mouse she laid out on the table moments before.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Gaelle looks fierce as Rupert asks about Hari. "She's out doing her job, so no need for you to worry about her."

Kesten, the Sirens, Stevic and Taerine listen closely as Rupert relays the story of the defeat of the Thorn River bandits.

"Well done, old boy!" Kesten exclaims, slapping Orin on the back. "That's the way to do it! Teach those bandits what's what!"

He then turns to Rupert with a serious expression: "That will happen on occasion, Ribald, but you must be more careful, so you don't put your companions in danger. If you'd like, I'd be more than happy to offer you some instruction in the finer arts of sword play."

Dhavika, the half-orc, seems more concerned about Rupert's well-being. She puts her arm around you, "Don't worry yourself, Rupert. Mistakes happen. I'm just glad you're OK."

Marcine, having just filled her mouth with porridge, suddenly turns white and gags ans Thaal bites into the mouse. When she's able to speak, she hastily excuses herself, taking her bowl and leaving the table. Taerine also quickly leaves the table, muttering under her breath.

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

In response to Gaelle, Rupert says, "Well, now, isn't that what we're all doin'? What makes one person's job more important than the rest of ours, eh? Nah, I'm just kiddin', ah' can tell when business is private."

Then, "I'll remember that, Kristin, if ah' ever find mah'self in need," Rupert responds coldly, obviously annoyed at the newcomer's combination of ignorance and arrogance.

Female Elf Cleric (Desna) 1

Lirisial smiles at the man and says "Your compliment is appreciated, though surely you can find more use for me than simply as someone to admire."

Treshiell eyes Rupert as if studying him in a new light. Then the witch turns to Kesten. "He does not look like a Ribald", she says before redirecting her attention to Thaal on the table, softly stroking the viper's head.

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

Edrukk listens to the chatter idly as he works on some replacement bolts. As he finishes putting his tools away, he finally addresses the arrogant captain, "Just as I am sure that you are fully competent in your assigned task of protecting this fort, I must ask that you extend the same courtesies to us. We are each quite capable, in our own way, and no one here really need condescending advice on how to do our chosen task." The tone of his voice makes it clear that he does not think highly of the captain's arrogant attitude. Once he is done speaking on that matter, he offers to entertain Kesten and his ladies, as well as his hosts, until the rest of the party is ready to move out and start exploring in an attempt to cut off the conversation before it gets ugly.

Draelen happily listens to Edrukk's stories and songs. He's a bit concerned about Hari going off by herself, as he didn't notice this on their trek to the fort. When she returns, he tries to ask her about it as inconspicuously as possible.

Seeing Marcine and Taerine's reaction to the Thaal devouring the mouse, Draelen mutters to his nearby companions. "I certainly hope that they don't have to hurt anything bigger than a mouse to guard this fort.... I'm not sure if their stomachs could handle it."

"Do you think they will be able to catch some mice? With the recent bandit hunt i've not found the time to catch some myself", Treshiell says, her eyes now focused on Draelen.

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

Rupert laughs outright at Treshiell's comment, "Hah! Yeah, let's leave them to the mice-catching, and we'll go do some real hunting of our own. I'm finished eating, shall we head out? We shouldn't waste valuable daylight."

"Ready when you are,Rupert. Which direction shall we head first? East, west, or south?"

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

"Well, how 'bout to th'east, then? I'm only anxious to be out there."

Once the party has left, Rupert will say, "That Kresten fella' and his crew sure do rub me the wrong way--ah' think we should keep our eyes closely on them until we know we can trust 'em."

"East, eh? I've heard there's rugged hills out there, but probably easier to see trouble coming than in the woods. Sounds good to me."

In response to Rupert's comments, Draelen chimes in "Oh, I don't think that he has the brains to be devious. Of course, anyone that naive with power to wield can be dangerous. His 'harem'.... now them I don't know about, they seemed harmless enough on the road, but the sneaking off business has me a bit worried."

Backing up a little bit, just to catch up on some dialog, though feel free to keep moving ahead as well.

Kresten pauses for a moment as Lirisial's comments register, then a slow grin spreads over his face and he leans in close and whispers to her.

For Lirisial:
"I can hardly think of all the uses I could find for you. We could make music to make your goddess smiles, my dear."

Later, at breakfast, he seems stunned by Edrukk's response. "My apologies, Eggbert! I have no doubt of your competence, good master dwarf, but merely thought to offer my aid to your companion, who apparently came out the worse for wear in his recent runin. If he's not interested, then I shall merely content myself for hoping he returns safely from his explorations with the rest of you."

As the conversation turns to leaving, Gaelle glares at you with the discussion of catching mice. She sniffs loudly before getting up and stalking away, toward the palisade.

Dhavika, the half-orc, sighs. "Now look at what you've done. You can hardly blame Marcine for not liking snakes. They're hardly common breakfast acquaintances, especially swalling a mouse in one bite."

"Which isn't to say that I'm sure he's not a very nice snake," she hastily adds to Treshiell.

"Good luck in your exploration. It will certainly be duller without you here. Stay safe, Rupert ... and, please, don't take any offense at Kesten -- he doesn't mean any harm," she says as she walks toward the gate with you as you depart.

Orin smiles at the young witch "Take no offense from them, Treshiell. It's sometime amazing how someone used to blood and violence can find something so simple... disturbing."

Looking at the half-orc, Orin says "There must be more than meets the eye to our good Captain for him to derive such loyalty from his subordinates. Unforunately his attitude of superiority may get him, or worse someone under him, killed out here in the wilderness"

As Rupert stands after breakfast Orin will suggest that they stock up on necessary supplies before heading out. "Extra rations, tents and ropes and such would be a great help to us and allow us to range further and longer."

"I take no offense, and neither does Thaal. As i understand it was Marcine who took offense", the witch responds calmly. "And you", Treshiell adds and once again shifts her gaze onto Dhavika.

The half-orc fighter guffaws at Treshiell's accusation. When she finally finishes laughing, she wipes a tear from her eye. "You are a funny little thing, aren't you? *I* got no problem with your little pet. Where I grew up, with my mam, well, that there critter is no stranger than a one-winged dragon pulling a cart full of crumple horned snorcacks!"

She continues to chuckle as she finishes eating her meal, seeming to pay no notice to Treshiell's baleful glare.

"We are glad to hear that. More people should grow up there. We've gotten the stranges looks when we've wandered the village outskirts", Treshiell says and places her arm on the table to let Thaal climb up. She rises and adresses the table. "You were speaking of exploring the nearby area?"

After losing his audience to the mouse incident, Edrukk chuckles slightly and seeks out Stevic to finish up any business remaining from the previous night before preparing Patience for the following day of exploration.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Hey, I need some direction for where you want to begin exploring, as it sounds like everyone's done with what they wanted to talk about inside.

Edrukk, were you looking to sell stuff to Stevic? The crates of furs and hides you brought back were his to begin with, but he's willing to buy any of the other items on your loot list. Also, party should probably try to decide (in the OOC thread if they want) how they're going to split their cash, so that can be put on each person's page instead of staying on the loot list.

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

I wasn't sure if it was his or not originally so I deliberately kept the details on what Edrukk was doing with Stevic vague. I am not sure what the party wants to do with the rest of the stuff.
