Round 1, initiative 12

"Then they wager their souls", Treshiell calmly replies to Rupert and whips her hands forward. The shadows leap from her face down her arms and manifests into a black cloud roughly the shape of a snake. Soundless and with lightning speed the snake lashes out against the mites and then disappears, sadly without any effect.

Standard attack to cast Ray of sickening against a mite not engaged in melee, ranged touch: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7. bah... stupid dice rolls :( been thinking for a while of switching that spell since it requires a touch attack. i think i just got my anwser...

Agnar wades into battle with Orin, crouching to spit one of the mites on the end of his blade.

Round 1:

Rupert: 19
Agnar: 15
Treshiell: 12
Orin: 10
Mites: 9
Edrukk: 5

Rupert's arrow speeds into one of the mites, piercing the little creature's heart and killing it instantly.

Agnar and Orin follow up his attack, leaping forward to rain death down about the fey. Orin's swing misses, but Agnar slashes one of them, knocking it unconscious as the cold iron dagger finds a vital organ.

Treshiell's spell lashes out harmlessly, and the shaken mites regroup, slashing back at the intruders. Apparently still startled by your sudden presence and Treshiell's theatrics, they all miss, though one does slash Agnar's armor.

Edrukk comes to his colleagues' defense, slamming his hammer into one of the mites, which splatters with a squishing noise against one of the cave walls, drawing a suddeny cry of triumph from the black-scaled kobold, who looks at you with wide, surprised eyes.

Three mites remain

Dice rolls:

Rupert sneak attack damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3

mite 1: 1d20 ⇒ 16
mite 2: 1d20 ⇒ 9

Treshiell's theatrics?! How dare you, sir :)

Round 2, initiative 12
hp 16/16
ac 15, touch 11, fleet-footed 15
cmd 12
effects: mage armor

Treshiell pulls her arms back in a arc then brings them together with a crack. A snakelike shape, much like the previous, coils from the shadows and jumps one of the remaining mites, although it does no physical damage.

Cast Daze on one of the mites. DC14 will save to avoid being dazed for one round.

Round 2:

Rupert: 19
Agnar: 15
Treshiell: 12
Orin: 10
Mites: 9
Edrukk: 5

As the fight rages on, the bound kobold yells something out in Draconic: "אתה נותן מ 'גמ 'ג החוצה! הוא לוחם אמיץ שאני הגמד הרע לבין הרע יהרוג קרדית"

Draconic:
"You let Mikmek out! He am brave kobold warrior and will kill evil mites!"

Before anyone can respond to him, though, Orin, Agnar and Rupert slaughter the last three fey in the room, leaving the five of you in what appears to be an improvised torture chamber.

Dice rolls:

Edrukk attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Rupert attack: 1d20 ⇒ 17
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

Male Human (Ulfen) Cleric 4

Agnar wipes the mite blood from his dagger and goes to check on the unmoving kobolds.

"What did the little guy say?"

Human Witch 4, 25/25 hp

Treshiell inhales deeply and the shadows once again lay still on the witch. "He wants out. And if he is to believed he is not small", she says calmly and lets the orbs of light float gently around the cavern.

"אַ גוט יאָר מיקמעק. טאָן איר געדענקען אונדז? ביסט איר קוקן פֿאַר שאַרפּטאָאָטה ווי געזונט?", she says as she approaches the kobold.

draconic:
hello mikmek. do you remember us? are you looking for sharptooth as well?

Male Half elf Spell-Less Ranger 4

Orin will pull his handaxe from his belt and hack away the roots holding the kobold. Once he is free he will check the other kobolds for signs of life.

"כן, מ'גמ'ג זוכרת אותך. הוא נתן לך צנון הירח, אז אתה נותן לו ללכת."

Draconic:
"Yes, Mikmek remember you. He let you have moon radish, so you let him go."

The kobold rubs his arms once free, watching as Orin checks the other kobolds, who are all dead. He looks down for a moment, then looks around at you.

"אתה רוצה לעזור שוב? מחפש שן שארפ! לעזור לך להרוג כל קרדית כי מ'גמ'ג לא להרוג".

Draconic:
"You want help again? Am looking for Sharp Tooth! You help kill any mites that Mikmek no kill."

Male Human (Ulfen) Cleric 4

"Well, he's not small next to the mites, anyway," Agnar says, shaking his head over the other kobolds. "Ask him if we should retrieve his tribe's dead."

Human Witch 4, 25/25 hp

"מיר האָבן שאַרפּטאָאָטה. עס זאל זיין מער מייץ דאָ פֿאַר איר אויב איר ווינטשן צו דעלוו ווייַטער. איר וואָלט האָבן צו טאָן אַזוי אויף אייער אייגן. עטלעכע פון אונדז זענען נישט געפיל געזונט", Treshiell tells the newly freed kobold.

Draconic:

We have sharptooth. There might be more mites here for you if you wish to delve further. You would have to do so on your own. Some of us are not feeling well.

"אַזוי מאָאָנראַדישעס קויפן פֿרייַהייט? וואָס מער טוט עס קויפן?", she then asks, seemingly more interested in what Mikmek has to say on the subject.

Draconic:

So moonradishes buy freedom? What more does it buy?

But barely after she has finished Agnar's offer catches the witch attention. "How would you do that?" Treshiell asks, her focus now solely on the cleric.

Is Mikmek obviously wounded?

Male Human (Ulfen) Cleric 4

Agnar looks sidelong at Treshiell, waving a hand to indicate the dead kobolds in the room.

"These here. We could take the bodies with us back to his tribe, if he feels that would be proper. I don't know what sort of funerary rites kobolds use on their dead...just seemed right to ask."

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

"אתה להציל שן שארפ? הידד! מוות טארלקח! לטאות מפני הקללה עכשיו" the kobolds cheers, and begins to do an impromptu dance, despite his wounds, apparently ignoring Treshiell's next question. And, yes, he is obviously wounded.

Draconic:
"You rescue Sharptooth? Hurrah! Death to Tartuk! Kobolds safe from curse now!"

Human Witch 4, 25/25 hp

The kobold's cheer grabs Treshiell's interest. So much so that she disregards that Mikmek ignored her question. Her eyes set deadfast on the dancing kobold. She with the speed of a viper Treshiell catches the reptilian by the arm. Thaal matches the witch's velocity, stabbing and retracting his fangs from her and in one motion. The two small holes begin to leak a thin crimson dust as the wound is drawn out of Mikmek.

Cast Healing hex on Mikmek, 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

She retains her grip on the kobold even after the wound has seeped out down her arm and fallen to the floor. "פארוואס טאָן איר רופן פֿאַר די טויט פון אייער שאַמאַן? ער וואס ברענגען איר שאַרפּטאָאָטה?", she says, her eyes unmoving and even unblinking.

Draconic:

Why do you call for the death of your shaman? He who brought you Sharptooth?

Male Half elf Spell-Less Ranger 4

As Orin listens to the byplay between the little kobold and Treshiell a flash of worry crosses his face as the witch lashes out at Mikmek. Looking down at the little reptilian he says very loudly and slowly "Do...you...speak...the...common...tongue?"

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Mikmek's eyes grow large as Treshiell heals him. He suddenly falls to he knees and grasps at Treshiell's pants legs.

"*gasp* אתה מלכה עוצמה של זוחלים! אני מודה לך על ריפוי אותו, הו רב עוצמה לשון נחש!"

Draconic:

"*gasp* You powerful queen of reptiles! Mikmek thank you for healing him, oh great and powerful serpent tongue!

At her question, he covers his snout and looks down.

"אני לא אומר את זה! זה תאונה. אולי אתה לא מבין אותי? לא לספר לו, בבקשה, הו חכם הנחש אלת עוצמה אדירה!"

Draconic:

"Mikmek no mean it! It accident. Maybe you no understand Mikmek? No tell Tartuk, please, oh wise and mighty powerful snake goddess!

He's looking up at Treshiell when Orin asks his question. "Little speak it," he chirps, in common, in response to the ranger.

Male Human (Ulfen) Cleric 4

The true Common tongue: louder and slower. :)

"Thank Erastil," Agnar mutters under his breath. "Mikmek, should we take your dead back to your tribe?"

To Treshiell: "If your new friend is up to walking, I suggest we take our leave before any other mites show up."

Male Half elf Spell-Less Ranger 4

Orin sighs in exasperation "Why didn't you say that in the first place?" Bending down Orin picks up the mite's weapons and hands them to Mikmek "We..go..now." he waves his hand around in a circle to indicate eveyone, including Mikmek. "You..help...kill..mites..on..way...out."

Human Witch 4, 25/25 hp

Haha, Treshiell doesn't need a kingdom. She's queen of the kobolds now! :)

A smile dances over Treshiell's lips as she watches the kobold grasping her leg. "מיין קאַמפּאַניאַנז מיינט צו זיין ינסיסטאַנט אַז מיר פאַרלאָזן. מיר קענען רעדן מער פון דעם אויף די וועג צוריק", she tells Mikmek then turns to her companions. "Will you show the way?"

Draconic:

My companions seems to be insistent that we leave. We can talk more of this on the way back.

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

Rupert shrugs off the alien-sounding conversation as he stands from where he'd been resting his aching body on a nearby stone. "Well, let's get a'movin' then. These sorry limbs aren't gonna move themselves!" He chuckles at his joke, possibly sounding a little delirious.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

I thought Treshiell would like that...

"They dead," the kobold replies to Agnar, looking confused. "Why take home?"

As Orin hands him a dagger, Mikmek squeals in delight. "הא! קרדיות לא לתפוס אותי שוב. אותי אני מוכן דרכים מסובך להרוג אותם מת! "

Draconic:

"Ha! Mites no catch Mikmek again. Mikmek am ready for tricky ways and kill them dead!"

Edrukk rolls his eyes and sighs loudly as the kobold waves the weapon around for a few moments, showing his prowess.

Eventually set, you climb through a 30-foot-long root-laden tunnel to reach a cave, though Treshiell does have a little difficulty.

In the center of the room is three crude, wooden workbenches in the center of this room, their tops strewn with various tiny tools, metal and wooden hardware, and blocks of wood.

Three mites squeal in alarm as Orin emerges, and prepare to attack. Two seem to have some odd small catapult-like contraptions made out of bones and branches and turn them toward Orin, while the third -- oddly -- spits a caltrop out of its mouth and hisses in anger.

Note that it takes a round to climb to the room. So Orin is there in the first round and Agnar (who's generally been second in the marching order} will arrive at the top in the first round but not be able to attack. Our typical order has had Edrukk next, though if Rupert and Treshiell (i.e. the non-NPCs) want to get up top first, I'm fine with that. Treshiell will take two rounds to get to the top, holding up anyone behind her due to a failed climb check -- of course, I imagine the mites will actually be dead by then, but you never know with the dice roller.

Climb checks:

Agnar: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Edrukk: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Orin: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

Orin emerges from the tunnel shaft and says in Common "You are blocking our way. Get out of our way or get hurt." Seeing the blank looks on their faces, Orin pulls his greatsword and advances on the mites.
Attack roll: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Damage: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 3) + 6 = 14
"Move! Now!"

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

"Ladies first?" Rupert offers to Treshiell, remembering her earlier comment that he should stay in back. He then waits in back as the others advance up the tunnel, listening to Orin arrive and the others, one by one, as the mites begin to get cleared out.

Human Witch 4, 25/25 hp

Treshiell looks at Rupert trying to discern what the rogue means. "Ladies first", she decides and climbs the ladder. "Orin found something", she announces as the ranger shouts and engages the mites.

Male Human (Ulfen) Cleric 4

Agnar clambers up into the room, stepping aside to make room for the rest to ascend.

Orin cuts one of the mites in half as the other two mites launch thier catapuls at him. One of the caltrops soars over his shoulder, falling down the shaft past Agnar to land at the feet of Treshiell, Rupert, Mikmek and Edrukk. The other caltrop bounces harmlessly off the ranger's armor.

Agnar reaches the top and steps aside to make room for the rest of their companions.

Before the mites can reach for any other weapons, Orin cuts down one of them and Agnar, pulling out his short spear, pins the other to the wall.

A quick scan of the room as the others climb up the shaft reveals a handful of caltrops scattering the floor, plus various crude tools on the work tables.

Pushing onward, the cave loops back to the shaft where you entered, the sun shining through the huge tree's roots. Emerging from underground, you're able to stand fully upright for the first time, knots of tension easing out of your neck and shoulders.

Feel free to do anything else in the caves if you want before you leave; I was getting sick of combat and figured I'd move things along a bit.

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Male Human (Ulfen) Cleric 4

Agnar stretches, giving a groan.

"Tunnel crawling doesn't seem to suit me... I suppose we should get back in the saddle and get that ugly thing back to the kobolds. I suppose Mikmek rides with Treshiell. Doesn't look like she's been able to shake him loose," he says with a smile.

Human Witch 4, 25/25 hp

"If i did, would you offer to take him? How does Erasil feel about converts?"

I don't have anything more to do in the cave. Feels like we got what we came here for :)

During the ride back Treshiell presses the small kobold. "ווערטער קומען פון ערגעץ. זאג מיר, מיקמעק, ווו האט דיין ווערטער קומען פון ווען איר פראקלאמירט טויט צו טאַרטוק?"

Draconic:

Words come from somewhere. Tell me, Mikmek, where did your words come from when you proclaimed death to Tartuk?

Male Human (Ulfen) Cleric 4

"I'd be a liar if I said a kobold at my back didn't make me nervous. However, any convert is welcome. Getting his attention away from you, though, would take a miracle."

I think we've covered everything. Did we give old Sharptooth a good looking over? I can't remember.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

The kobold hems and haws for a time, but finally tells Treshiell, "אף אחד לא אוהב אותו. אותו אני מאוד מפחיד, אפילו בקנה מידה פיח הראשי חושש ממנו לקלל. אבל יש לו פסל מקודש, ולכן לא יכול לעשות כלום. לרפא אותו לא מישהו כמו הגברת נחש קסם."

Draconic:
"No one like Tartuk. Him am very scary, even Chief Sootscale am afraid of him and curse. But he has sacred statue, so no can do anything. Him no heal anyone like magic snake lady."

Yakpik, who joined you outside the mite lair, chirping with delight as he saw Mikmek, hisses and looks around as if afraid someone might be watching at his fellow kobold's words. Then he nods excitedly to Treshiell for a second before going back to looking around the woods to ensure no one else is around.

Sharptooth was given a cursory glance, though Treshiell did determine it was bleeding too. (It's the last two posts on that page, continued on the next page.

Male Human (Ulfen) Cleric 4

Got it. Though I'm thinking it wasn't so much bleeding as being bled upon...at least outside of Treshiell's perspective.

Agnar will give the statuette a closer look when we have the opportunity, say when we make camp, along with anyone else that cares to. He'll see if it is representative of any worshiped god, devil, or demon he's familiar with.

Yeah, I think you're right, but when it's Treshiell, you never know.

You don't recognize it as any specific deity or infernal creature, Agnar.

Male Half elf Spell-Less Ranger 4

Did we grab the gear off the mite's leader or any of the other mites?

Human Witch 4, 25/25 hp

"Tartuk is not beloved among his people", Treshiell tells the group with an eerie calmness, then turns to the kobolds. "Or perhaps it's not fair to call you his people. What do you say?"

While she waits for a response the witch takes the statue. Her eyes roll to the back of her head as she touches it. Then she begins to whisper in a strange language as she runs her fingers over the odd object. Cast Detect Magic

Don't think so, but then I don't remember there being much in the way of things we could use (itty-bitty spears, itty-bitty catapults, etc.)

"Tartuk's their shaman, yes? If he's a devotee to the fiend that idol depicts, I'm not surprised."

Human Witch 4, 25/25 hp

"Yes, he is. A newcomer and protector of the tribe", Treshiell anwsers. "An unwanted protector", she adds then turns once again to the kobolds. "וואָס טוט ער באַשיצן איר פון? עס קענען נישט זיין די מייץ."

Good point.

Treshiell, the statue does not radiate magic.

Draconic:
He protect us from curse.

As far as I know, all you took from the mites was the sack from the chief's treasure room, which contained The sack contains 12 small spears and a large amount of coins. Whenever you get around to counting it, it's 193 cp, 120 sp, and 32 gp.

You should have some other gold -- I believe you got a chest from the Swordlords last time you were at the fort. Crap, can't find it, but it should have had 600 gp, 100 for each of the PCs.

Sorry for the brevity -- busy day.

Human Witch 4, 25/25 hp

Treshiell lowers the statue and her eyes turn back to normal. "This does not do anything", she states and looks around for someplace to discard the useless relic. "What curse does he protect you from?" she asks the kobolds while trying to unload the statue on the first person that looks like they will accept it.

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

Rupert maintains unusual silence on the trip back to the Kobolds, seemingly focused on placing one foot reliably in front of the other. Being too proud to complain or ask for assistance, he simply continues trudging along determinedly in back of the group.

He looks up to Treshiell at one point when she turns around to face him, but he is only rewarded with the little, mundane statuette suddenly being his burden to bear.

Sorry for the silence, it's partly inspired roleplaying (Rupert's been poisoned and beaten to near death a few times today) but I've also been having to study heavily for a comprehensive exam I'm taking this coming Sunday (it's right before classes start back up again), and it's really messing with my schedule in ways I wasn't expecting.

Male Human (Ulfen) Cleric 4

Ah, comps. Fun times. :)

"Still feeling a bit low, Rupert? Not to worry. A good night's rest, fresh poultices on your wounds, a strong dose of tea to flush the toxins from your body, and you'll feel more like yourself again."

"Yeah..." Rupert says with a sigh, "Ah' always try not t'let such bodily concerns inhibit mah' lifestyle, but this stiffness is straight annoyin'!"

Male Human (Ulfen) Cleric 4

"I'll see if I can't have you back to your old self in a couple of days. In any event, forewarned is forearmed," Agnar says stoically, "Now that we know mites make friends with venomous critters, we'll be sure to be prepared for future encounters."

The shaggy Ulfen turns to Orin.

"Shall we find a good place to camp? A rest would do us all some good. I'm sure the kobolds will be just as happy to get their idol back tomorrow, and we won't be dragging ourselves about like a pack of kicked puppies."

Yakpik pipes up at Treshiell's question: "הקללה של הפיכת צהוב למות!"

Draconic:
The curse of turning yellow and dying!

You make camp shortly after putting some distance between yourselves and the caves, and the night passes uneventfully.

The two kobolds mostly talk quietly among themselves, but seem content to stay with the group, though they huddle close to Treshiell for the most part.

Draconic:
Their conversation seems to be catching up on what's happened recently. Mikmek explains how his raiding party was caught by the mites and slowly tortured to death. Yakpik tells Mikmek that Tartuk sacrificed one of their friends to Sharptooth to ensure the raiders' safe return. He misses the other kobold, but it seems to have worked ... sort of.

Feel free to do any healing/whatnot overnight; once you're ready, you can travel back to the kobold caves.

Retconning a little, per Orin's request, you were able to collect 16 daggers from the mites and a like number of short spears. From the chief himself, you recovered a very nice longspear (albeit small-sized), a chain shirt (also small sized) that appears to be very nice once it's cleaned, a very nice buckler and a potion bottle.

Also, just FYI, I probably won't let you do a looting retcon in the future -- either grab it while you're there (risking other things going on, or you'll have to go back later).

Agnar's back to full channel energies for the day. How are we looking as far as hit points? I know Rupert, Edrukk and Orin got pretty battered.
