Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

"Well, sir, while we may appear t'be but 'moon-touched children,' as y'said y'self, ah' can assure ye' that these children don't take kindly to banditry. Nor are we children. Why, Lirisial there has been wandering these parts for longer than I've been alive, and ah' meself was born and raised in these parts. Y'can trust this small bandit problem t'us: next time they show up, we'll send 'em runnin' w'their tails twixt their legs before they even have time to say, 'Please kind folks, don't you be sendin' us runnin' w'our tails twixt our legs, sirs and madams, please!'

"Or somethin' like that."

Treshiell studies the woman for a moment with a pleased smile. "There is nothing to be nervous about".

She turns to Stevic as he steps out of the house. "Yes, your saviours are here. These lands are now safe", she proclaims in her airy voice almost like a loud whisper and makes a sweeping gesture.

Cast Charm hex on Stevic (DC 14)

Charm hex:

Charm (Su): A witch can charm an animal or humanoid creature within 30 feet by beckoning and speaking soothing words. This improves the attitude of an animal or humanoid creature by 1 step, as if the witch had successfully used the Diplomacy skill. The effect lasts for a number of rounds equal to the Witch’s Intelligence modifier. A Will save negates this effect. Whether or not the save is successful, a creature cannot be the target of this hex again for 1 day. At 8th level, this effect improves the attitude of the target creature by 2 steps. This is a mind-affecting charm effect.

If the charm takes she walks up to Stevic and takes his arm and says: "I take it you are the lord of this fort? Why don't you show us around your domain?". She leads him onward but releases his arm before the charm effect ends. Then she slips more into the background letting Rupert do most of the talking.

Diplomacy check to make him more fiendly: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19

Female Elf Cleric (Desna) 1

Gathering up the pieces of the stew bowl, Lirisial bows and says "I'm so sorry! I suppose I'd just gotten used to the snake. I've seen quite a bit in travels, so little surprises me anymore. Is there anything I can do to repay your loss?"

Stevic's save:

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20

Stevic looks closely at Treshiell's grand gesture but then snorts and shakes his head as if breaking a spell her words put him under momentarily. I'm assuming since he made his save that you won't take his arm, Treshiell.

"We'll see. Those flaming bandits are probably coming back tomorrow to take all my bloody work of the last dragon-stinking month. Do something about that and maybe I'll change my mind."

With that, he turns around and stomps back into the building. A minute later and you can hear banging again coming from inside.

Taerine turns to you with an apologetic look. "I'm so sorry for my husband. Please forgive him. He's upset and he takes it out on other people. We've both been so worried about these bandits and have been waiting for help from Restov. I told him we should just leave, but he won't. Don't worry about the bowl, but, please, if you can do something about the bandits..." Her voice chokes up as she finishes, and Lirisial is standing close enough to see tears shining in her eyes.

You assume correctly :) Stupid NPC saves...

Treshiell stops halfway towards Stevic as she realises that the charm didn't take. Her initial surprised expression is slowly replaced with a smile. She turns to Taerine. "Your husband's got a strong will. You have to tell us more about him"

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

"Don't y'fret y'self over those silly bandits no more, milady. We'll take t'all under control from 'ere. Now, perhaps you'd like t'show us around a bit?" Rupert steps forward to join the group gathered around Taerine, smiling. "Or perhaps you'd rather we explore a bit by ourselves, and y'can return t'your work? We don't want t'be a burden, madam."

Female Elf Cleric (Desna) 1

Taking Taerine's hands in her own, Lirisial looks her in the eye. "In the name of Desna, I vow to you that these poxes upon the land will not take what is yours. If they will not turn away from this place, then their journeys will end here."

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Taerine begins showing you around, noting that your mounts can be kept in the stables for 2 silver pieces a night and that the beds in the guest house are available for 5 silver pieces a night, which includes breakfast and dinner -- which if it's as good as the stew she's provided for lunch, will be well worth the cost. There are six beds, though appears to be nothing for privacy. If there's anything specific you're interested in, let me know; otherwise, she pretty much shows you the map as in the previous post. She doesn't take you into her and Stevic's home.

As she shows you the fort, she explains that a group of bandits first came three months ago and took all their stock and have come back on the first of every month. "But now that you're here, you can stop them when they arrive tomorrow, right?"

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

"Absolutely we can stop them, an' we will stop them, but first: ah' would be honored t'stay here this night and enjoy y'food an' comp'ny." Rupert gazes around the fort, imagining the events of the next day.

Her mind occupied with the failed charm attempt Treshiell seems even more absent than usual, seemingly not paying any attention to a word Taerine is saying.

"Another party arriving tomorrow? Where will they sleep?", she says while tapping lightly on the guest house wall. Then she presses her ear against it like she's expecting an answer.

Female Elf Cleric (Desna) 1

As Taerine ends the tour, Lirisial presses a gold piece into her hands. "For my mount and me. Keep the rest, as recompense. The Starsong looks kindly on those who shelter travelers."

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

"Sleep? I don't know where they sleep," Taerine says, sounding confused. "They come and steal all our proceeds from the last month and leave! They're always here right after sunrise and usually in a rush to leave, so I know Stevic thinks their base is about a day away but who knows where."

"I don't really care, I just want them to stop bothering us."

Treshiell straightens herself and brushes some of the dirt of her hands. Her gaze hints that she has regained her focus on the situation. "It ends here. We can assure you of that. It would be bad manners to have our benefactors burglarize."

The witch rises her arm so she comes eye to eye with her pet snake. "If you will excuse us, me and Thaal have preparations to attend. Please fetch us when the bandits draw near."

I would like to switch Dancing lights to Guidance. According to the rules i need to sleep for eight hours then spend one hour communing with my familiar. Do i have time to do that?

Treshiell spends the rest of the day either communing with Thaal or sleeping. Any excess time is spent humming quietly with Thaal asleep in her lap.

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

Edrukk, a sturdy looking dwarf wearing simple, but sturdy, travel clothes, looks up from the map he had been starting at the mention of the word bandits. "Hmm, bandits don't sound like much to build a song off of, but I suppose they can serve as good combat practice to wet the common axe of battle on. As for those bottles of wine, you must be rich indeed to have such fine vintages on your hands if they truly be older than myself. So how shall we engage these brigands, ambush or combat in the open field?" He pulls his warhammer from his belt and starts polishing it's metal head so that is nice and shiny for tomorrow's engagement.

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

This may be out of order, but during the tour, Edrukk would have examined the ballista (or catapults or whatever they are) on the corners of the walls and the integrity of the walls themselves.
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27 knowledge {engineering) and/or

Broad as a mountain barely describes the frame of Xanwell as he walks along with the group. His massive shoulders are only slightly dwarfed by the greatsword along his back. Auburn hair cut short due to time spent in the military, along with a slightly dull look in his blue eyes reveals Xanwell to be exactly what he is; a grunt. While perhaps there may be more to him than previously revealed, the man seems to be constantly strained to hear what is said to and around him. Choosing to remain silent in his breastplate and array of weapons, he silently glances along the fortifications and ponders the best way to go about fighting a group of bandits. While he was certainly not intelligent by any means, he was certain that the group would not be expecting him here, let alone the others.

"Let them get close, then kill 'em all. That's what I've been trained to do at least."

His voice is deep, and every statement literal. He was certain his comrades would be able to deduce his purpose for being here. He was not the strong leader or the healer, he was a soldier. Lucky enough to be able to afford a bit of fancy equipment before leaving, he supposed his chances were slightly better than everyone else's of survival.

"Just tell me where to set-up."

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

"My warhammer is inclined to agree, my barbarian friend, but the others may think otherwise, and some of them seem distinctly squishier than you and I." Edrukk comments as he finishes polishing his warhammer, and proceeds to check his leather armor for any spots that need repairing quickly.

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

Rupert feigns offense at this last statement, "Squishy, you say? M'good sir, 'ah dare say that's an uneducated guess!" He dances around back and forth between his two feet to emphasize his point. "Ah' always say: the best defense is not gettin' hit in the first place."

Orin listens to Taerine's story as she leads them around the fort his violet eyes, a gift from his dead mother, searching the walls and towers. "forgive me, my lady. But how many of these bandits usually show up? Are they always the same ones? That may tell us if we are dealing with a roving band or a more organized, larger group"
As Orin overhears Xanwell and Eddruk's conversation he interjects " A fine plan, if we were facing disciplined soldiers. These villians feel no compunction to stand and fight, if you confront them openly they will just scatter and flee into the forest. This we cannot have as one will more than likely alert others that the trading post is gaurded." He looks over at the gates and shakes his head slightly "What we need is to lure them inside, then we can close the gates behind them. Once they are trapped inside it will be as easy as shooting fish in a barrel"
Later that night, after the evening meal, Orin takes a gold coin out of his belt pouch and presses it into Taerine's hand. "For tonights room and board and perhaps some extra oats for Windswift, lord knows he's been living off frozen grass and shoots for the past few days"
So saying he leads his horse to the stables, his light blonde hair stained copper in the firelight.

Xanwell nods to both the dwarf and then to Orin.
"I agree. Leading them inside would be the best bet, once we've trapped them we can slaughter them rather easily. If that is the plan. I have nothing against the killing of those who prey on the weak. Unless of course someone here prefers non-violent means. Of course, I can have little part in non-violent solutions. I'm afraid I was made for violence, and that is my lot in life."

With no applicable skills to further help plan the ambush, Xanwell will participate in food if it is offered, and spend the rest of the time practicing his exercises for the battle to come. Before resting for the evening, he will find Orin and speak directly to him.

"I was thinking about the plan. Once they're inside the gates and begin loading the goods, I'll shut the gates from the inside and wait for them to panic. I can charge pretty good and engage the battle once they've realized it's begun. Now I'm not one for planning...but if we dig some spots in the ground along any escape routes, it'll be hard for them to navigate with the wagon and all the horses. We did that during training anyways."

While not brilliant, he did have a decent mind for strategy that came from his training.

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

Rupert hands Taerine a goldpiece for his lodging and food for the evening. He spends the evening lounging around, drinking in the pretty sights. Regarding the plan, he agrees that bringing the bandits inside, shutting the gates, and then springing the ambush is the best option. "Ah' can act my part as innocent bystander until the time comes, if that's what we need."

I'm going to retcon my previous post since events changed slightly as we lost Barren, Stavros and Sigurd.

Treshiell moves around the courtyard watching the walls with a distant gaze while listening to the men debating the forthcoming events. She stops and scans the courtyard as if looking for something. "But where will they hang?", she says after a moment as she abandons her search.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

No problem, Treshiell. I was going to point out it was only mid-afternoon, so you have plenty of time before needing to get your rest.

Edrukk, the catapults are in very poor condition. You think they will need weeks of work before they are able to be used.

Orin, Taerine explains that the first time the bandits visited, there were a dozen of them, led by a cloaked man with a bow, and a woman who carried two small hatchets. The woman did the majority of the talking, threatening to burn down the trading post and abduct Taerine for their own amusements if they didn’t agree to hand over all of the furs
and trade goods they’d accumulated the past month from hunters and trappers.

"She was terrifying," Taerine says. "She told me she would kill both of us if we didn't give them what she wanted. But she said first she'd force Stevic let her men have their way with me! And she smiled the whole time. She threatened to put an axe right into my stomach when we told her we were trying to have children. Then she took my wedding ring right off my hand and gave it to one of her men. She said it was payment for not ruining our family plans! It was horrible."

On the second and third visit, only the man, who seemed cruder and more foolish than the woman, came with the bandits, and he only brought six of them both times. "I think they realized we can't do anything to stop them," Taerine says sadly.

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

"If ambush it is to be, than we need to decide what or who is the signal for attack." Edrukk says in reply to the developing plan. "Also, if you need bait, I am willing to volunteer. Otherwise, I'll probably be waiting on the walls out of the way with my crossbow to deal with any who decide to run." That being said, Edrukk proceeds to entertain his hostess (and host, should he care to sit in) with a variety of stories and comedic acts for the rest of the evening in an attempt to calm and relax her by getting her mind off recent trouble.

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

Rupert puffs out his chest only slightly as he claims, "Ah' can out-talk, out-smart, and out-fight any one o'those bandits by the sounds o'things--and seein' as ah' seem so squishy, why shouldn't ah' be t'one t'stand as bait and lure them in? Hell, ah' might even know a few of 'em."

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

"My comments were not directed towards anyone in particular; after all, I suspect most people end up looking rather squishy compared to our friend here. If you are set on being the bait, what ideas do you have as to a good signal to inform the rest of us that it is time for more forceful measures?" Edrukk calmly replies as he quietly chuckles at the swashbuckler's reaction to his earlier comments. "Also, while your willingness to defend yourself and your honor is admirable, might I suggest you save that energy and channel it toward the rapscallions in the morning. My experience is that party cohesion is rarely aided by petty grudges."

"Easy everyone, I believe that Xanwell meant nothing by his comment, he was just observivng that a few of us are not the toe-to-toe type." Then looking at Rupert he continues Rupert, no one is demeaning your prowess with a blade, but I believe that none of us should be in the open when the bandits arrive. Everything should be as business as usual as possible. Anything out of the ordinary may just tip our hand before we strike. As for timing I believe we should allow the bandits to load up their ill-gotten goods before we srping our trap, that way we have caught them red handed. But above all we have to secure the safety of our hosts first."

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

Rupert responds reassuringly, "I'm just teasin', y'should know that ah' don't mean anythin' by it. Ah' will do whatever 'tis that ah' need to t'make the plan work. So long as y'put me up close t'them eventually, I'll be satisfied."

"Maybe the trees outside will do", the witch says still entangled in her own thoughts. Then she switches back into "reality". "Rupert's squishiness will not be a problem since we are sure that Rupert is intent on not getting squashed", she offers the conversation.

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

"I'll be up top to shoot stragglers and would be escapees. I can hide myself in the frames of one of the catapults until needed," Edrukk offers during a break between stories. "By the way, this meal is excellent, milady," he tells Taerine.

OOC:
Basically he would prepare a place to hide tonight, to boost his otherwise weak stealth roll. The catapult in the SW corner would suit his purpose best, since it's close to both a ladder and the gate.

Xanwell smiled and laughed, offering them all a round of drink should they want it. "No, I didn't mean anything by it, only that there are some who do better not getting hit in the face. It doesn't mean much to me, I was born to be a punching bag. Only now...I can do some hitting of my own."

He let out a grin and asked: "Just point me to where you want me to stand, and make a signal to let me shut the gates. I think if we attack them from different angles with a bit of a distraction going on, they'll be too disorganized to run. Especially with Orin's plan to keep the wagon fully loaded."

Ooc:

Spoiler:
Xanwell will take this time to prepare and sleep, and should be ready for the morning. No further action on his part save to have his armor and sword easily obtainable in the morning.

"That will not further our needs at this time, Xanwell", Treshiell says as she declines the drink. "We are curious of what the sunrise will bring and do not want to miss it."

The young witch then studies Xanwell from top to toe. "I wonder what the bandits will think of our gate keeper. Such a tower is hard to hide.", she muses. "Maybe we can shrink him?", she says hopefully.

Treshiell will also eventually go to rest so she can (hopefully) switch her spells around before the bandits arrive.

Female Elf Cleric (Desna) 1

"I think we all have some idea of what is going to be happening, then, though we may need more than one to close the gates. No offense meant to your obvious strength, Xanwell, but we must be sure to trap them all swiftly. I'll help close the gates as well. I assume Rupert will either be in hiding or posing as bait, the same for Treshiell. Edrukk will be our lookout. Once the gates are closed, we strike. Does this satisfy everybody?"

"What do we intent to catch with our bait?", Treshiell asks while she get's up and moves towards the fire. She picks up some burnt out and chilled down coal and draws two straight lines underneath both hear eyes. Then she proceedes to draw a circle on her left palm and triangle on her right, and finishes off with a line from the edge of the symbols to the tip of each of her fingers.

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

"If we intend to hide our mountain of a friend, perhaps have him wait inside the other front catapult. Then when the signal is given, he can run out and jump down to close the gate. This gives him a spot to hide himself with some cover and puts him close to the gate." Edrukk suggests as he willingly takes advantage of Xanwell's generous offer of a drink.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Stevic, who has joined the group during the discussion, grunts at Lirisial's observation. "The dragon-scorched door isn't *that* heavy. The big guy can probably close it himself," he says, jabbing his thumb at Xanwell.

During the discussion he contiues to listen in, grunting occasionally and frequently rolling his eyes at Treshiell.

Taerine listens a little as well, though she's also busy doing things around the fort, including making dinner for everyone when evening comes.

The gate opens outward. It's 30-feet wide, so will probably take a full round to close (or open, if that becomes necessary).

Edrukk, you can take 20 to hide by the catapult if you give yourself time. Note that it's a 10-foot leap so if you choose to come down without using the ladder (or if Xanwell has to leap down from the other side), it's a DC 15 acrobatics check to avoid 1d6 subdual damage).

If Xanwell is by the catapult, it will probably take two full turns to get the gate close -- one to get down and get to the gate, the second to close it.

Right now, I've only got Edrukk's location set, though it sounds like you're still planning. Please eventually let me know where everyone wants to be for the ambush.

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

If possible, Rupert will hide in the wagon in front of the door, and search for straw or something to hide under. Sacks of anything will work, as well.

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

I just suggested that for Xanwell since I don't really see any other place on the map closer to the gate he could hide. After catching a power nap, Edrukk would be looking to get setup in his hideaway about an hour or two before the usual arrival time. During the fight he would focus on ranged attacks from the top of the wall.

Treshiell would like to greet the bandits but if the plan is to hide then she will settle for a spot with a clear view over the yard.

Treshiell examines her hands for a moment with a dissatisfied look on her face. Finally she puts a dot in the middle of the circle and triangle and takes another look. Now satisfied with the result she pockets the piece of coal and walks over to Taerine and looks her in the eye.

"I am told it is custom that you require gold for our accommodation, but i was not told how much", she says as she digs out some coins from her coin purse and starts to count.

OOC: Xanwell will hide near the catapult, and spend two rounds. Xanwell is assuming he will launch some sort of signal, or be responding to a signal before shutting the gate. And if strength is an issue, he can rage :D

"Perhaps it would be best if the ladies of our group secret themselves inside the buildings, one inside the stable the other in the bunkhouse until such time as the combat begins." looking around the courtyard for what seems like the thousandth time Orin states "I will be on the roof of the main residence, hidden on the side opposite the courtyard. Once the bandits begin loading the furs and such I will reveal myself and order them to surrender. Once I make my presence known, the dance can begin"

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

"Seems like a solid plan, only thing I would add is that as soon as the half elf shows himself, our hosts should disappear as quickly as possible into their house, so as to avoid any further damage to themselves." Edrukk comments as he finishes up the last of his drink and meal, and starts putting away his various tools he had been working with throughout the afternoon. "I am off to bed until it is time for me to take up my position. Before I forget, here is the last of my coin as the first part of my payment to you for your kind hospitality; when we take care of the bandits, I will make sure you get the rest." Edrukk pulls some coins out of one of his pouches, bows to his hostess, and goes into the guesthouse to get some sleep before waking up a couple of hours before the expected arrival time and taking up his position.

Female Elf Cleric (Desna) 1

"Very well. I shall secret myself in the stables, emerging when the gates are shut."

Lirisial will be sleeping until tonight, when she will be praying to Desna as the stars are out. She'll be keeping a vigil until the bandits arrive, in full combat gear.

"The stables provide a much better view of the yard. We will acompany Lirisial there", Treshiell declares. Lifting her arm so she comes eye to eye with Thaal she continues "Now we have to go and prepare." The witch rises and leaves for the guest hut.

Now if possible i would like to change my prepared spells from Dancing lights to Guidance.

Xanwell enters a calm sleep, but every muscle in his body prepares for viscious combat, what will come in the morning. His ears buzz more and more with each day, a strange power.growing withon him. He will be one of the first to rise in the morning and don his armor. Taking the greatsword gifted to him hy the wealth of his previous life, hell make a new oath. To protect those weaker than himself and to become something great.

Xanwell will patiently await, dropping rope down to make his descent easier when it comes time to lock the gates. Hell hunker down and gain focus, preparing to unleash his rage.

With violence imminent in the morning and the possibility of death as close as it's ever been, the night seems to pass both in the flash of an eye and at an interminable crawl.

But you all wake before the dawn to get into your hiding places, and an hour after the sun rises into the sky, the sound of hooves breaks the calm of the morning.

Six bandits ride in through the open doors of the fort. They're led by the man Stevic and Taerine described, wearing leather armor with a composite longbow slung on his back and a quiver full of arrows at his side. Behind him, the other bandits, all humans, also are garbed in leather armor, though they have normal longbows and short swords as weapons.

Bandit perception checks:
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 221d20 ⇒ 8

They seem in fine spirits as they ride into the fort, past Rupert hiding in the wagon, though for a moment it seems as if the leader notices Edrukk as he quickly scans the area before he shakes his head, apparently dismissing whatever it was he thought he noticed.

The group dismounts and quickly begins loading the furs and other goods from the storage pen onto their mounts. The leader dismounts and watches his men work, talking to Stevic as he does. Those who are close enough can hear his cruel gibes. "Where's your wife, oldtimer? Afraid she'll suddenly realize what real men are like and decide to come with us? You know we'd treat her reeeeal nice," he says with a leer.

The updated map (which obviously needs some better photoshopping for the bad guys) is here.

Feel free to roll initiative now. Orin will get a surprise round, but since his action is the signal, no one else will. Include your actions for the first round -- with an attack and damage roll if you plan to attack with your initiative check, please. Once I've got everyone's first-round actions, I'll start figuring out how they resolve. This'll be my first PBP combat as player or DM, so feel free to let me know how it works and what might work better in the OOC thread also.

Initiative roll: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

Round 1, initiative 10
"I thought they would be taller", Treshiell whispers to Lirisial as the bandits enter the fort. "We will get new horses", she adds a moment later.

As Orin gives the signal Treshiell clenches her fist and whispers something into it. Then she delivers a punch in the air in front of here, in the direction of the closest bandit.

Cast Daze (DC14) on the bandit that's closest to Treshiell.

Just realized one thing on the map isn't clear -- the leader of the bandits is the one closest to the wagon/Rupert.

Male Human Rogue 3 (Swashbuckler)

Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Rupert, on the signal, leaps out of the wagon and lands next to the bandit closest to him. "G'day, old chap!" he cries out with a flourish of his sword (which, I'm assuming he had in his hand as they were waiting for the ambush), and attacks.

Attack 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Damage 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Male Dwarf Bard (savage skald) 3

Initiative Roll: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 Edrukk will move 20' toward the gate, and ready to fire at any bandit who tries to move back to it from their current location.

Just in case his action is triggered:
Attack 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Damage 1d8 ⇒ 5

At the signal, Edrukk moves out with crossbow ready, eager to finally see how well this group did in combat.
