You find yourselves on the northeastern coast of Katapesh, in the small seaside town of Blackcrag Cove. People stroll through the streets and along the piers, but they seem to carry a weight on their shoulders, smiles often falling from their faces and their eyes going to a smoking mountain looming in the distance.

Knowledge (local) DC 20:

The people of Blackcrag Cove harbor a deep-rooted distrust of unfamiliar magic. A year ago, Mayor Kostya’s guard discovered evidence of a clandestine cult dedicated to the Queen of the Inferno, an obscure deity of fire and violence.

The mayor enlisted the aid of a band of adventurers to disrupt the cult, culminating in the public hanging of the cult’s leader, revealed to be the mayor’s own trusted cousin Ledain. Mocking his own execution, Ledain swore that the Queen of the Inferno would claim vengeance on Blackcrag Cove.

As the anniversary of Ledain’s death nears, strange signs and ominous portents have been observed in town. Just yesterday, the people felt the dormant volcano Theana rumble in its sleep, and saw the black smoke spewing from its peak. The mayor is deeply troubled by these signs, worried that her cousin’s curse just might come true.

Skaar does what he did in every new town he visited - get a feel for the place by walking its streets, learning about its people, and f~#+ing its whores. The streets told you a place's history, where it'd come from and where it was headed. A town's people were the heart, without them it was just a collection of buildings. The whores? That was mostly for fun. The hulking greenskin had found that it was a lot easier to focus on doing good when all of his appetites were sated. Whores also had a habit of knowing things.

The big Orc knew he had his work cut out for him. Most would refuse him service, look the other way, or just avoid him. Some were even foolish enough to draw steel or pick a fight. Skaar didn't blame them. Even if he was working to make amends, it wasn't too long ago that he was exactly the monster they made him out to be.

Greetings folks!

Drogusk strolled through the streets of Blackcrag, looking for a place to sit and think about where he was. Neither of these were strengths of his, but the BrainPal had insisted.

He found a tavern and kicked a seat out to plant himself upon. He ordered a bitter ale and, when it arrived he ordered a second with a smile. He was halfway through gulping down the first tankard when the voice in his head chimed in. It's tinny falsetto making him wince.

User, I do not understand your obsession with poisoning yourself.

"You wouldn't... Can't you leave me drink in peace?" He relied aloud, getting a confused look from the barmaid as she brought the second mug. "No... Not you... Nevermind..."

User, mild tectonic activity observed upon entry to this community. Expedience is recommended in this visit.

Drogusk just sighs and continues drinking his ale.

A young woman in a jester's outfit, short cape and domino mask is on a street corner, performing various feats of acrobatics for the passing townsfolk.

'What a miserable dump this is.'

Tasha tried to suppress the thought, seeing as it was rather uncharitable and might distract her from the routine she is performing, but it kept returning.

'Looks like they've got problems with the local volcano. Qi Zhong help me if I know why people are stupid enough to build near one of those in the first place...'

But the young wizard decides she has little time for such thoughts. She tried to focus on her street performance. Disguises are made up of numerous things -- such as doing things she flat-out despises doing, such as making a spectacle of herself for people she normally wouldn't talk to in a million years. Yes, disguises are made of a great many things...

Ideyoshi walked along the piers, ostensibly to find a ship to take him to new destinations. He had intended to see where the winds of fate might take him. But in truth, his focus was not on the sea, but on the looming mountain, grumbling and smoking. The mountain took him back to his youth, and to images of the great snow-capped mountain near his old home. That mountain was said to be the domain of Yamatsumi, the volcano god. Perhaps this mountain was also fueled by Yamatsumi's anger. Whatever the case, it looked magnificent.

Ideyoshi decides to change his plans. He seeks out a friendly looking local. "Pardon, sir," said the samurai with a tinge of Tien accent. "What is the name of that mountain? Do you know of a guide who might take me there?"

"It is Theana," the man replies, looking at you as if you might not be right in the head. "But no one's going to take you there. Look at the smoke. It's never done that before."

You are all enjoying your stay in the town, but the calm is shattered when the earth begins to violently shake and the top of the mountain splits open! Great plumes of smoke rise into the air as the ground trembles and ash falls from the sky. Panic grips the town as large rocks rain down upon it, some bursting into flame upon impact.

Make a DC 20 Reflex saving throw or be knocked prone by the earthquake.

As some of the nearby buildings crack and tremble, one large lava bomb lands just yards from where you're all standing. From the rubble, three massive creatures seemingly made of fire emerge!

Initiatives:

Davro: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Drogusk: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
Ideyoshi: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Skaar: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Tasha: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
Antagonist: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29

Round 1 (top)
The three creatures quickly leave the crater, scattering in both directions and seemingly fixating on the nearest bystanders: You!

Ideyoshi, Skaar and Tash all get lashed with flame before they can react. 9 hp fire damage for Ideyoshi; 8 to Skaar; and 5 to Tasha; all also must succeed at a DC 16 Reflex save or catch fire

Mechanics:

1 attack (Ideyoshi): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

2 attack (Skaar): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

3 attack (Tasha): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

For those who are new to my games, I like to do round by turns. I'll set up initiative so the antagonist always goes last, thus letting you react to his/her/its actions. This means sometimes there'll be half rounds to start where a couple of you go, then the antagonist and then we'll do a full round 1. I'd like each of you to post your actions and then I'll do a full-round wrap up. If you want to do an if/then type of action, that's fine. Otherwise, I may change your actions based on something someone else has done (i.e. if your target is no longer viable)... Please feel free to ask if there are any questions. Also, I find PBP leaves me with a lot to juggle, so please don't hesitate to pipe up if I miss something.

Proving to be the graceless musclebound creature he appeared, Skaar teeters and falls as the land shakes under the volcano’s fury. The big Orc struggles to make sense of what’s happening only to be burned by the searing lash of a creature made from living flame. The flames clinging to his scarred mossy hide make the huge brute sweat and the perspiration seems to take the sting away from the flames. After shaking his head to regain his senses, Skaar scrambles to his feet and balls up his massive fists.

Move action to sweat. Spending a ki point to improve it to fire resist 10 and +2 deflection bonus for AC. Standing up provoking.

Reflex save 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

Tasha manages to keep her footing despite the sudden upheaval of the earth, and throws up her arms to cover her face when the flames lash out at her. Grimacing at the fire's sting, she lowers them again in time to see the figure lumbering towards her... and she bares her teeth in an expression that is not funny at all.

Knowledge checks to identify these things. If successful, Tasha uses a swift action to enter into Kirin stance and gain the +2 bonus versus the creature's attacks. Knowledge (arcana) 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19 Knowledge (nature) 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27 Knowledge (planes) 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27 Knowledge (religion) 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13.

Tasha scuttles backwards, putting as much distance between herself and the approaching monster as she can, and chants under her breath. When she comes to a stop, she thrusts out a hand and finishes with a harsh "Nivis casus!" A tiny sphere of blue light flies from her index finger, ends somewhere between the monsters -- and expands into a sphere of howling, arctic wind and sub-zero temperature!

Tasha moves back and launches an Ice-element version of Fireball at the monsters. If she can catch more than one of them still, that's good. She definitely aims it not to encompass innocent bystanders. Reflex save DC18 to halve 7d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 4, 2, 2, 2, 4) = 26 cold damage.

Drogusk rushes to the door, wrenching it open to see a huge creature made of fire fighting a Tien man, who suffers a painful looking burn as he climbs to his feet 5 hp, . He thrusts the sword into the heart of the creature, but the flame seems to merely swirl harmlessly around it. The effort seems to throw off the creature's own attack, though, its flailing arms failing to connect with the swordsman.

On the far end of the street, Drogusk notes a woman scuttle backward from two more of the fire beasts, before casting a spell that creates a massive ball of ice and snow behind them. It barely catches one of the two, but the other is caught fully in its midst, withering under the onslaught.

Skaar stands, sweat beginning to cover him, as Davro and his faithful companion goes to interject himself between the elemental and the wizard. You do get to control Doraga, but he'd have taken a couple AoO for moving into a flanking position. Wasn't sure if you'd want that.

The massive badger snaps at the elemental, but suffers burns for his troubles. Hit but suffers 3 hp fire damage and must make a DC 16 Reflex save to avoid catching on fire. Also

The elementals seem only enraged by the attacks, and Skaar suffers a pair of painful blows, though the flame itself doesn't seem to hurt him. As Brain Pal activates protective bubbles around Drogusk and Ideyoshi, the half-orc warrior rushes forward, taking a burning lash 5 hp plus 8 fire; need DC 16 Reflex save to avoid catching on fire as he delivers a brutal slash of his own that splits the elemental down the middle. It reforms, but is hit a second later by a slash from Ideyoshi, nearly dissipating it. Still it pulls itself together long enough to lash out toward its two attackers, hitting both. 10 hp plus 8 fire to Drogusk; 6 hp and 4 fire to Ideyoshi, plus both need DC 16 saves to avoid catching on fire.

On the other side of the crater, one of the elementals suddenly seems to rear back for a moment as Tasha's spell hits it, leaving an opening for Davro's blade to whip through it. Wisps of fire follow the blade and the creature seems to lose cohesion, dissipating quickly before it completely gutters. Davro, you only got one crit as you killed it with that first strike. As such, I also changed Doraga's action to make it so he'd set up a flank for next round. Doraga moves across the street, getting ready to pounce on the final remaining elemental, but before he can, an orc warrior leaps on the flame, seemingly heedless of the danger to himself.

The creature, despite being wrenched around, concentrates on burning Skaar, wrapping its own fiery tendrils around him. It's actually makeing two slam attacks; 12 hp total, and I'm not bothering to tell you about the fire damage

Tasha nods with satisfaction at the way the battle is going -- until she sees the burly Orc physically wrestling the last elemental.

'Bloody fool will get the flesh roasted off his bones!' she thinks, irritably -- and lashes out with the same spell she used but a moment before!

Skaar slams the last elemental into the ground, and it too dissipates in a burst of flame, leaving the five of you alone on the cratered street.

The trembling fades and the mountain seems to quiet, though around you, you can hear still hear cries of alarm and fear as villagers begin to re-emerge from their hastily sought shelter to deal with the small fires around you.

A light ash falls, darkening the blue sky.

Skaar grunts in satisfaction as the fire-thing dies and looks up to realize that he’s in good company. There were three warriors, an exotic tian and two half-orcs, and the acrobat had turned out to be a wizard. He would have never guessed it!

Wiping the caking ash from his massive hands, the big orc regards the others with a nod. ”This kinda thing happen often ‘round here?” he rumbles.

Skaar is a massive specimen of greenskin-kind, a full-blooded orc standing well over two meters tall and weighing near thirty stone. His hulking frame is covered in mossy green hide and coarse dark hair sprouts from his head and along his body. Scars and tattoos decorate his naked flesh liberally. Despite his musclebound appearance he moves with surprising grace for a creature of his size.

He's clad in a leather harness composed of straps wrapped tightly across his burly torso. Pinned to one of these straps is a small emblem indicating his connection to the Dawnflower. His tree trunk-girth legs are clothed in dirty hide leggings and worn travelers boots bulge with the effort of containing his feet. The only weapon he carries besides his ham-sized fists is a simple mace hanging from his hip that glows with a soft light.

Seeing the threat abated, Ideyoshi rolls on the ground to extinguish the flames that linger on his body. His focus then turns to the half-orc that aided him in battle, as well as the odd speaking contraption that he wears. He speaks again in common tinged with a Tien accent. "I thank you for your aid. What is that thing you wear on you? Is it some sort of spirit you have bound?"

He then looks to the assembled warriors. Another half-or, and a full-blooded orc. Reflexively, he reaches out to sense if they have evil auras, but finds none. Indeed, one of them was offering healing. "Thank you, but I can tend to my wounds." His suspicions lingering, he preferred to heal himself.

When you're ready, the guard escorts you to the mayor’s office. The stone building has a newly formed crack running up one side of its stone facade, and guards are coming and going, relaying orders to help get the town under control.

Entering her office, a woman just on the far side of middle aged, dark hair graying, bids you to sit, a grave expression on her scarred face.

“Thank you so very much for defeating the fire creatures that attacked my town. You saved many of my people and for that we are all in your debt. Unfortunately, this event has confirmed my greatest fear. The town’s curse is real and the volcano will claim us all.

“Almost a year ago, we eradicated the last traces of an insidious fire cult threatening our town. Their leader was, sadly, my own cousin, Ledain. As he stood before the gallows, he pronounced a doom upon Blackcrag Cove, swearing that before the dawn rose again on the anniversary of his death, his goddess, known as the Queen of the Inferno, would consume us all. We didn’t heed the bluster of a condemned man, but soon after his execution, old Theana stirred from her slumber. An ill omen, but one that we hoped was mere coincidence.”

Mayor Kostya pauses to let out a tired sigh.

“Today’s events prove otherwise. Our time is running out, for in just two weeks it will be one year since Ledain’s execution. So we call on you as our town’s last hope. We could try to flee this divine retribution, but where would we go? And what of those too infirm to make
the journey?”

The mayor shakes her head before continuing.

“My advisors tell me that there is only one who could help us, an oracle that lives in the mountains to the west. They say to seek out the Wisdom of the Water, but this makes little sense to me. Can you solve this riddle? Can you save Blackcrag Cove?”

I'm going to assume you all agree to help because, well, otherwise we'd be ending the PBP awfully quickly. :)

The mayor thanks you as you agree to help.

"I don't have much I can offer you, but we have horses if you need, and a map of the mountains to help on your journey."

The map shows a river winding through the mountains and one large waterfall along its course. The journey should take only a few hours, it looks like.

Any other questions anyone wants to ask? Or any preparations to make before you leave town?
