Male Human Wizard/3

Boland, shows keen interest in the holy symbol, looking over Andolphas' shoulder and listening intently as he identifies the symbol. He casts a detect magic over the items found from the Grimlock and in their cavern to see if there is any magic hidden among their belongings.

When Harrigan reports the passageway at the back of the cavern, he also groans at the prospect of more Grimlocks arriving as they rest.

"Unless we can find somewhere else nearby, I'm not sure if we have much choice? We will need to post guards, certainly."

Male Human (Suloise/Oeridian) Cleric 3

Andolphas seems to turn a whiter shade of pale as Harrigan reports his findings. The priest nods quietly when Brashen suggests that the party try to remove some of the spikes from the cliff wall.

"I will take first watch, though my eyes cannot see far into the darkness. But perhaps we can imbue stones with light and periodically toss them into the chamber below, if we organize three watches, at least two of them with magic wielders if Harrigan is part of the third?"

Male Human Fighter / 3

Brash looks at Harrigan. 'You littleies are supposed to be good with stone aren't you? Any idea how to get these out? Don't suppose anyone brought a crowbar with them?'

Thinking for a moment he continues. 'I do have a few flasks of acid with me... maybe that could come in handy.'

Who is removing the spikes and how do you plan to go about it?

Male Human (Suloise/Oeridian) Cleric 3

"And I've a miner's rock hammer... if the acid alone doesn't do the job, maybe it can weaken the spikes sufficiently to make it possible to break them off with a good whack of a hammer? Damion, Boland... are either of you capable of conjuring magical silence?"

I don't think either of them can.

Male Human (Suloise/Oeridian) Cleric 3

"Maybe we can use the grimlock hides and wrap them around some of the spikes to muffle the sound of us trying to break the topmost spikes with the hammer?" A worrisome afterthought creeps into the priest's mind. "Are we likely to have a reason to want to go down there after we rest? Could the grimlocks be an active faction of the Ebon Triad dedicated to Erythnul... and if so... are we likely to find anything of importance if we venture deeper into their warrens? And if we do go down," he adds with a shudder, "then we will want to ensure we leave ourselves a way back up the cliff."

How many rows of spikes can we reach from where we are? How many spikes might we be able to break... assuming we have the strength to do so? How many humanoid creatures could plausibly climb the cliff in horizontal/parallel fashion at the same time?

Male Human Fighter / 3

I think the plan is to head back to the other parts of the mine after we rest, but if we have a reason to head down here, we could always use a rope

Rows of spikes are placed about a foot apart down the cliff face to act as a ladder, wide enough that two medium sized humanoids could climb side by side. You can probably reach down about four feet with the rock hammer by leaning over the edge - further if you come up with a plausible way.

It would be possible but challenging to climb the cliff in another location.

Anyone approaching the cliff side in order to remove spikes let me know how you are going about it, also give me a perception check (and a stealth check if you are making an effort to stay hidden and have a way to remove the spikes quietly).

Male Human (Suloise/Oeridian) Cleric 3

"If no one has a better idea... does someone have a rope that we can use to tie to the grimock's filthy hides? We could then lower those over a spike... and maybe the strongest can try to break the spikes loose?" Andolphas looks expectantly at Brashen for a moment.

" If we're really lucky, we might even be able to catch the spikes in a fold in the hides when they break loose, thereby preventing them from dropping to the ground and making noise."

Thinking on their predicament a little longer, he adds. "Alternately, someone could be tied with a rope, and drop down far enough to knock out the topmost rows of spikes (only those that would be necessary to allow a grimlock-sized creature to reach the ledge), putting the hides over the spikes again to muffle the sound of hammering, and to catch the spikes when they fall loose?" The cleric then looks at Harrigan, as if he would be best suited to accomplish the second plan.

"The rest of us would have to stay on look out, and ready to heave up the rope, at the earliest sign of danger."

The cleric holds out his rock hammer to whoever will take it.

Anyone have a better idea?

Male Human Fighter / 3

Brash nods. 'I'll take out as many as I can reach from up here, if it looks like we need to take out more, and my work hasn't attracted any unwanted attention, we can lower Harrigan down. You lot keep an eye out for trouble'

Brash removes his packpack and takes out one of his flasks of acid, then retrieves some rags from the grimlocks clock. lying flat on his belly he lets a small amount of acid drop on the base of the first spike, then gripping the end with the rags simply tries to pull the spike free. If this proves too difficult he will use the hammer.

Male Human (Suloise/Oeridian) Cleric 3

Andolphas hands the warrior his rock hammer, then lies on his belly by one of the cavern walls, trusting that Harrigan will keep an eye out for grimlocks who might approach from below.

"Damion, Boland... perhaps one of you should stay here with Brashen and Harrigan... would the other be willing to help me keep an eye on the passage from whence we came?"

Without waiting for a reply, the priest heads back to the passage from which the party came. Not trusting his nose and ears to detect potential threats once the magical light on his shield dims, he whispers a prayer to the Green Lady, and periodically places illuminated pebbles into the passage to help him spot approaching enemies.

Casts light on pebbles on places them in the tunnel as often as required Perception: 12 + 2 = 14.

Male Human Inquisitor 3

"I may not have the dwarf's darkvision, but my eyes are keen enough in the light. I'll stand watch," Damion nods, hefting his crossbow.

I'm back for now. :D

"Littles?" Harrigan sputters in response to Brashen's quip. "I'll have you know I could break a halfling or gnome over my knee, bout as quick as any of you. Word of advice if you want to carry on a friendship with any dwarves in your future. Cracks about height and beards... not cool man."

"And despite my uncle owning this mine I can't say I've ever put in a day's work in one. Even so, a dwarf finds a use for tools here and there." Harrigan digs a short crowbar out of his pack and waves that in one hand and a hammer in the other. "I reckon we oughta wrap the spike in some cloth so we aren't sending out the alarm from here to kingdom come, but these should do the trick."

Did we use all of our rope coming down the entry shaft? I had 50' of silk rope and a grappling hook, but I can't remember if I threw it in on the line we tied together back there.

Male Human (Suloise/Oeridian) Cleric 3

Andolphas doesn't have any rope. The posts on page 62 suggest that Boland and Damion tied their ropes together. I didn't check the spoilers, so don't know if Harrigan used another rope during his solo descent. Otherwise, looks like the dwarf might still have his silk rope.

Male Human Fighter / 3

Brash has 50ft of hemp rope

Male Human Wizard/3

I'd like to offer my apologies to all for being absent so long. All is ok at my end, but work and life is increasingly making it difficult to get the time to dedicate to the game, and I'm aware of that impacting on you. While I'd like to continue with it, and have enjoyed it, I'm not confident I'm going to be able to post regularly enough to keep it moving at the pace it should.

Apologies, and thanks to you all, especially Moth, for running and participting in an great game. I hope the rest of you can and will continue.

I'm around, but since Moth is tied up right now I've left this one hanging recently. I intend to make a post detailing the spikes and setting up watch, but have to get down to actually doing it soon.
Man- sorry to see you go Boland. Any chance you'd drop back in once things settle down in some months or whatever the case might be?
