Init: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21 Can I localise the sound to an aera I could aim a bolt at with light cast on it? i.e. not trying to hit it, but trying to get within say 10ft.

Sure. Making a perception check in this manner will be a move equivalent action made on your turn.

Stick me in U16.

"Huh?" Reeking sits up groggily to reveal he is suffering with a serious attack of 'bed hair'.

Map

The blue is the lake (west) and river (north). The dark grey are steep banks bordering the water that require DC 0 climb checks to traverse (you’ll make the DC, but you move as climbing). Green is undergrowth that counts as difficult terrain. The brown are tree trunks. The yellow is your fire, which provides normal light two squares out from the fire in each direction, then dim light another two squares beyond that. Beyond is darkness. Low light vision effectively doubles these radii. The light grey squares are bedrolls.

Anor is up; do you want to proceed with a perception check as above to pinpoint the intruder’s location?

Female Human Witch 1 AC 13 HP 8

Yes please!

Anor:
You hear a faint stirring in the dark, about thirty feet away, almost due west of your current position K 15 – you can’t see anything though.

Female Human Witch 1 AC 13 HP 8

DM:
What do I need DC wise to hit that spot with the bolt?

Move action used in the perception check, standard action to cast "light" on the bolt loaded in my crossbow.

Oliver...

Anor:
I'd say you'd probably need to hit AC 10 to get it into the right square. A miss would have it 'scatter' in a random direction.

Male Half-elf Oracle 1 (AC: 17 [T: 13 /FF: 14]; HP: 17/17; F+3, R+5, W+6 (+3 more with Taint); Init: -1; Perc: +7 [Low-light vision])

Oliver wakes with the soft commotion, but does not rise. He grabs his spear, and with the other hand says a brief prayer for Anor given what she appears to be doing with a lit bolt.

Move, grab weapon
Standard, cast Guidance on Anor

Anor hears the faint rustle of leaves begin again, as it seems that the thing she has heard has started to move again. Although the thing moves quietly and she can see nothing in the darkness beyond the fire light, Anor gets the impression it is at least the size of a person.

Anor:
Whatever it is appears to be staying at a similar distance away from you, moving north east until it is almost due north of you. Now that it has moved another perception check will be required to try to pinpoint the square it is in.

Did the torch light already, or will that be part of ELjoy's action?

You can have lit torch pre-combat.

Has ShadowWing been sent into the tree to reconnoiter yet? If so, does she give Jasper any feeling of danger or concern?

Jasper gathers up an odd assortment of things from beside his bedroll before getting up in a crouch and studying the area where Anor appears to be looking: a sling, a couple pebbles, a flask of acid. I think he's out of actions - if not, he will move quietly to P18.

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11 Darkvision 60'

Stealth, if he has the option of moving after his other actions: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

[dice=Perception]1d20 + 9 Darkvision 60'

[dice=Stealth, if he has the option of moving after his other actions]1d20 + 6

ShadowWing can be up in a tree, but Jasper sent her when he first awoke, before he had any sense of what the trouble was or where it was coming from – so she’s not necessarily in a good spot. Give me a perception check for her anyway though – and a location.

There certainly seems to be a lot of actions there! Getting up from prone is a move action, as is making a player initiated perception check to try to search for stimulus, as is retrieving each item (generally speaking) – I’m happy for sling plus pebbles to count as one. In light of that, let me know which Jasper would like to prioritise this round.

halfling tattooed sorcerer (orc) 2 |AC 13, FF 13, T 11, CMD 9; F 1 R 3 W 6, +2 vs fear; hp 4/10; init +2; perc +10, +12 w/ familiar, +15 sight-based in shadows w/ familar

He's an active little fellow, what can I say? Looking at actions closer, I think this is what has occurred:

ShadowWing was 'resting' as a tattoo while Jasper slept. It is a move action for her (not for Jasper) to transform to normal form and she uses a second move action to fly upward (40' flight speed, average maneuverability, so 20' up?). His first action upon waking was to prompt her to take normal form, so I think this took place last round. If that was a surprise round, she starts this round on the ground.

This round, she makes a Perception check and flies toward anything of interest, remaining at the same height among the branches. Total actual distance will be 20' along with some circling to scope out the situation, so she should have no trouble maintaining her flight (requires moving half her speed or a skill check). She is not intentionally trying to be stealthy, but she is tiny size and naturally quiet, so she might escape attention of some.

Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11 She has low-light vision, if it matters. Never mind, saw the roll...

Stealth: 1d20 + 15 - 5 ⇒ (11) + 15 - 5 = 21 Penalty for moving more than half her speed

While she is starting her scouting mission, Jasper is trying to prepare for the possibility of danger, getting up to a crouch and gathering up the sling and stones.

Reactive perception check: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10 Yeah, we are a perceptive pair...

He doesn't have the necessary action to search for the maker of the noises, but he might still notice something, thus the roll. Disregard if appropriate. ShadowWing is out of reach, so the check does not include the bonus she normally grants. Hope that all makes sense.

Neither Jasper nor his familiar can perceive any threat.

Eljoy.

Eljoy pulls the burning brand from the fire. "Adalwin! Get up!"

Scowling, he pauses the barest second before marching north in accordance with Anor's comment. "F~&@ing fey running 'round the woods at night...." He leaves his ax at his belt and moves north with his shield ready and his torch held high. He shouts at the darkness.

"If you come in peace, we won't hurt ya. But you've got to either come in or move on. Ya can't skulk out there all night."

S8 would be a single move. Ready shield on the way. What he does after that would depend on what he sees. If you want to count that as his entire turn, that's fine too.

Male Human Fighter / 2

Adalwin scrambles up as he realises something serious is going on. Grabbing his sword and shield he looks around, unsure of the danger, before following Eljoy.

Grab weapon and shield and stand. If I still get another action move after Eljoy to P9

Reekis blinks the drowsiness out of his eyes and grabs for his trusty crossbow.

Grab crossbow and load. That means he's still effectively prone.

Eljoy, make a perception check.

Adalwin, grabbing your gear and standing would be your action.

Oliver tentatively stands, unsure what it is they are calling out to or facing, so he tries his best to pierce the darkness with whatever his elven eyes can see. He hopes that between the campfire and the brand held aloft by Eljoy he can make out at least some details.

Move, stand up
Move, Active perception 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

Anor:
Amongst the flickering shadows near the edge of the light cast by Eljoy’s light, you see a long, dark, sinuous shape slithering slowly and quietly through the fallen pine needles and undergrowth, heading roughly in Eljoy’s direction, just about to disappear out of sight behind the trunk of a nearby pine tree. It is in P10. Your shot will definitely hit the square, if you prefer to use that roll to try to injure the creature instead you have the option, but you will incur a 20% miss chance due to the dim light (as it won’t be brightly lit for you until your bolt actually reaches it). IF you miss it, the bolt will scatter a random distance and direction. Let me know what you prefer.

Oliver:
In the light of Eljoy’s torch your sharp eyes notice a long, dark, sinuous shape shape slithering slowly and quietly through the fallen pine needles and undergrowth, heading roughly in Eljoy’s direction, just about to disappear out of sight behind the trunk of a nearby pine tree. It is a snake, longer than a man is tall, similar to the one you saw earlier in the day. As you notice it, Anor lets her crossbow bolt fly. The snake is in P10. It is in normal light for you.

Female Human Witch 1 AC 13 HP 8

GM:
No, she was going for seeing what's up, not attacking. That's good.

"Something slithers, it's headed for you Eljoy. It's going behind that big pine..."

Weren't we warned about something snake-like but not?

Eljoy spins a 360.

"Which big pine?! There's a f&#*ing lot of trees here."

I believe we were so warned.

Female Human Witch 1 AC 13 HP 8

"Near where I fired the bolt!"

That light should be visible for everyone, not sure how big an aera it illuminates though.

Anor's illuminated crossbow bolt flicks past a tree trunk and crashes into the ground to the south-west of where Eljoy stands, illuminating the area with a cool light. It also illuminates a thick-bodied snake - somewhat longer than a man is tall, that is sliding slowly through the detritus and undergrowth on the ground. The snake appears similar in size and colouration to the one you saw earlier in the day. The light spell illuminates as normal light in a 20 foot radius from P10, and as dim light for another 20 feet.

As the bolt crashes into the pine needles beside it, the snake thrashes suddenly and slithers quickly forward, around a tree in front of it and towards Eljoy. It lashes out at the man in its path, trying to bite Eljoy as it whips its muscular body about.

bite attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20; damage: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
If the bite attack hits, it attempts to grapple Eljoy, using its grab ability. It's CMB check versus Eljoy's CMD:
grapple: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24

Jasper.

Also, everyone make a free perception check.

Note that the snake in R8 is currently out of line of sight of most of you, although it is well illuminated by Eljoy's torch.

Ouch. Hopefully this does not spell a premature end to Eljoy's career ...

Also, to be clear, this looks like a normal snake, not a snake-like monster (as far as anyone can tell).
