Actually, we shouldn't be hearing that. Kishan's veil blocks all sound.

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Boston Private Detective

Ah, sorry, thought she lowered the veil for some reason. Change it to me getting ready for a fight because they are suddenly becoming interested in the woods.

Oh, no you can hear it through the veil.

Let's go ahead and get into initiative.

Jarrod Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Aaron Initiative: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
Odd John Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 2
Kishan Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

Hilarious and fitting, I suppose. Everyone but Odd John go ahead. Then my bad guys, then Julian and John.

Well the bad guys are not visible and only vaguely audible so...I delay?

Are you in the truck?

We got out to pull the fire alarm.

Are we all waiting for my fairies to do something.

Yes. I delayed, because there are no visible enemies.

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

Apologies for my absence.

Ya, my veil conceals everything within the magic, but it is not a door or wall that would block anything behind it. Julian and I should be completely invisible, but the baddies, if they followed us over, are not inside my veil.

However, since Julian is inside my veil, his call for help should be completely silent to anyone but me, unless of course there is something magical allowing him to break through it.

"Julian! Stay calm. We are going to get you through this. You will be safe; you're parents will be safe. We just have to work together. Please, take my hand."

If he does so, she'll lead him back towards the road, still covered the in the veil. If he does not, she'll draw her sword (in a manner obviously intended to defend the boy, not threaten him), and stand ready for the enemy.

Julian backs away from Kishan, unconvinced that she is on his side. Kishan draws her sword and prepares to defend the two of them.

Yes, I get that the Veil should conceal them, and yes Julian's voice breaks through the Veil.

Out of the tree line, heading toward the road, Jarrod, John, and Aaron see several porcupines, doing a double take as you realize that the porcupines are ridden by small fairies with stick-like arms and legs, pot bellies, and large, gnomish noses. In place of their hair are porcupine quills, which also continue down their back. They wield tiny bows with quill arrows, and they wear the face paint and feathers of dime store Indians, clearly aping popular culture.

Seeing Jarrod's truck, they launch volleys of quill arrows at it, poking holes in the side and piercing two tires. Whooping and yelling all the way. (There are five fairies with porcupine mounts in this group, they are between the road and the trees, about 30 feet from the truck.)

I feel like roughing up a man's truck entitles him to a Hero Point

At the same time, two more of the fairies come riding toward Kishan and Julian, firing arrows at the Warden from about 20 feet away, both of the arrows flying past her.

Arrow Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Arrow Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

Hero Points: 4

Aaron moves in a bit and lets out his best draconic roar, throwing a blast of wind at the fairies.

"DROP."

30 ft. cone, they need to make a Ref save or be knocked down. DC 13, or DC 14 if Super-Strength applies.

Reflex saves: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 101d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 121d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 141d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 211d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

Three of the fey and their mounts tumble end over end, sprawling into the tall grass along the shoulder of the road.

John's companion agents take notice of the altercation, hustling him toward the SUV.

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

Free Action: Kishan looks at the creatures, both before Aaron's gale knocks them down, and again after, to see if there is any indication as to whether they can see through the veil or not...

Some of the more mystically inclined fey can see through glamour like it wasn't even there. It's like they get so used to seeing it, they have no choice but to recognize it for what it is..."

Kishan's next action would depend on what she sees, and whether she thinks it prudent to drop the veil or not.

Kishan, yes, a separate two of them shot at you and missed, so it seems like they are able to see you at least to some degree.

Waiting for Jarrod and John in this round

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Boston Private Detective

Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27 Rifled Slugs: +6 damage bonus, 250ft range. Also, what's the rules on rolling a nat 20 in M&M?

At the hiss of escaping air coming from not one but two -TWO- tires from his truck, Jarrod is frozen for a moment in shock. "M-m-my truck!" he screamed out, totally forgetting for a moment the need for stealth. Cocking his shotgun, he took aim at one of the strange creatures that Aaron knocked down with his breath and fired at it. "Do you have any idea how much tires for my baby cost?! I've only got one spare in the back!!"

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

Automatic Hit. If the attack value also beats the total Defense of your target, you also add +5 to the save DC of the attack's effect. So your +7 10 gauge shotgun slug becomes a +12 (Toughness save DC 27).

Changeling Rumpelstiltskin

John is holding this round- He's dealing with being Julian and being Julian in custody.
In other words, he's sticking with the plan until it's time to not to stick with the plan.

Teenage Golem

Julian runs free of the woods and onto a familiar street. He begins to yell for help again but spots two armed men-- one with shotgun, the other with a sword?-- and the officers from before as they get out of their car. And in the backseat, he spots himself?
He ducks down behind a car and tries to make sense of everything-- the ordeal at school, what the officers told him, the cornfield, and now his doppelgänger.
"What the hell is going on..."
He stays low, using a row of parked cars to break any line of sight from the armed men and the officers across the street, completely ignorant to (or perhaps unwilling to acknowledge) the pointy faerie warriors.
Stealth: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22

Toughness vs Shotgun: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

I didn't really need to roll it, but sometimes you want to know how bad it is.

One of the fey vanishes from his porcupine mount with a misty spray of red on the grass around him. That one won't be causing anyone trouble.

The only fey remaining on his mount and facing Jarrod and Aaron guides his mount toward Jarrod, casting his bow to the ground and raising his hands.

"Great Iron Wielder, we apologize for injuring your Iron Wagon. We had thought that you were with those who invaded our Corn, but now we see that you are a Warrior of the Iron People, and not the wizard who brought her monsters to steal our corn."

-------------------------

The two facing Kishan and Julian wheel about as he races toward the road, chasing him though the trees. As Julian nears one of the Iron Wagons, they seem to lose track of him.

Hero Points: 4

"They weren't stealing the corn, they were stealing a kid from the blue suits in the iron wagon with the flashy lights over there. You want to call off your buddies?"

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Boston Private Detective

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13

Jarrod paused as one of the little creatures dropped it's bow and basically surrendered to him with deference. "Er, yeah, Iron Warrior, that's me," he said, shooting a confused glance at Aaron as he pointed his shotgun down. He was still ready to bring it back into action should this prove to be a trap of some kind. "Yes, call back your warriors and return to your...corn field. We shall trespass there no more."

diplomacy or intimidate: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21

That sounds like a diplomacy check to me, but the bonus is the same either way. He gives no sign of deception.

The fey gives a great trilling call, and the two chasing Julian veer toward him (and Jarrod).

"Iron Warrior, you show honor to the Puckwudgie, and we shall accept your pledge to trespass no more. We know that you are not always trustworthy in your pledges, but we also know that you must fear our reprisal if you break your word."

Turning to his fellows, he calls out, "Come, warriors, I see across the way a sandwich shop. We shall raid until the sunset sends us back to our corn."

Puckwudgies are willing to head across the street and the suits are going to put John/Julian in the SUV.

Hero Points: 4

"We better get your tires fixed up quick so we can follow John."

Is there a Sears or an auto parts store of some kinda around here we can get another spare tire from? And/or can I use a Hero Point to make one?

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Boston Private Detective

'Think think think think IDEA!' Jarrod thought to himself as the puckwudgies started to move away. "Wait, noble puckwudgie warriors!" Jarrod called out softly, trying to keep the approaching guards from hearing him. "We shall not trespass upon your lands no more, like I said, but the ones responsible for our arriving there are across the street! While we may be innocent, you can have your vengeance upon them while earning the favor of the Iron People! They have captured one of our own, who currently bears the appearance of one of the men found in your corn field. Show them the might of the mighty puckwudgies and allow our compatriot the opportunity to flee their custody and I shall owe you one favor within my capabilities!"

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18

You can spend a Hero Point to put a place in the strip mall

The puckwudgie leader eyes you suspiciously, looking around for a sign of betrayal. He maneuvers the porcupine with his knees, as if wishing to get closer to you, but clearly cowed by your Big Iron Gun. He says, "These things in the Black Iron Wagons, it is they who have driven you to tresspass? And the changechild with them is your ally?"

Hero Points: 4

"He's right. Look for yourself."

Teenage Golem

Julian peers through the tinted window of a Toyota Camry at the gunman. He appears to be talking towards the ground, yet he can't quite see why. He lifts himself up just a tad bit to figure out why the gunman is talking to the ground.
He stifles a shocked gasp as best he could. What IS that thing?! I have to get away.
Panic sets in and Julian breaks out into a sprint down the street away from the cops and the people attempting to kidnap him. He makes a hard turn down an alleyway and continues his sprint up the side of the building as he climbs with the agility of a beast. Once at the top, he vaults over the ledge and hides from his would-be captors.

The puckwudgies who are still mounted dismount, while those who toppled from their mounts regain their feet. The group moves stealthfully, avoiding coming too close to the other cars. They move within about 30 feet of the rear SUV, the one that holds Odd John, before its engine roars to life, and it leaps onto the road with a jet of gravel thrown behind it.

The Puckwudgies briefly give pursuit, but quickly fall behind.

Inside the SUV, the suit in the passenger side makes a call, uttering no words but simply making a series of clicks and sighs. He thumbs the phone off and turns to "Julian" in the rear of the vehicle.

"We should see your parents in just a few moments, and there is a doctor waiting to look you over, make sure everything is ok."

Changeling Rumpelstiltskin

Bluff: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32

"A Doctor?
What?
Why would I need a Doctor?"

"Where are we going?"

"We just want to have you checked out, Julian. Make sure you aren't in shock or anything. Your parents will be there."

Changeling Rumpelstiltskin

"I should be in shock 'cause some petty a#$!@!$ set me up?"

"You guys are dumb as the campus clowns."

"I want my phone call NOW."

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Boston Private Detective

Jarrod watched the can drive away with a blank look on his face. "Well, fack," he said flatly. Turning to the puckwudgies -and still trying not to laugh at the name- he said, "The Iron People thank you for your help, noble warriors, though we are sorry you did not get the revenge you sought. My promise to you still stands, if you need help that is within my abilities I shall give it. Go now, feast and make your way to your cornfield."

The suit turns to "Julian" and tosses his phone at the kid.

"It's unlocked kid. Knock yourself out."

Changeling Rumpelstiltskin

I'm going with my first reaction here

"Buh?"

Looks surprised his request worked (as well as confused what he should do now).

Looks innocent, starts checking phone for what's on it- numbers from past calls, etc.

Search: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16

Any chance there was a phone number for the parents in the papers we grabbed and John can remember it?
Here's a Notice check to have seen it and, more importantly, an Int check to remember it.

Notice: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13
Int: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

'Laughs', Guess not.
That works.

The phone is a contains no contacts, no web history, no call history even though it just made a call. It is as though it just came out of a box.

Changeling Rumpelstiltskin

"What is this?
It's not a real phone!
This one of those mind control microwave thing you hear 'bout on the Web?
What are you guys trying to do?
Who are you?"

sits back deeply, sliding the fingers of his left hand deep between the seat cushions

The man grows annoyed and turns toward "Julian." There is a hint of violent intent before he thinks better of it, "Look, kid, use the phone or don't. No one is trying to microwave your brain. We'll be where we are going in about ten minutes. As we've said, we have taken you into custody for your protection. Just take a deep breath and calm the f*** down."

Hero Points: 4

Aaron, meanwhile, tries to find some new tires for the car.

"I think there was a Sears or something in that mall, right? Let's go get a tire."

And Hero Point spent.

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

Kishan looks after the retreating SUV. A shotgun goes off less than a hundred feet away, and they don't even stop to take a look? Ok, definitely not legit cops.

"Try and make it quick. I don't want to leave John alone with those guys any longer than necessary. He gave me what I'd need to track him, so as soon as the car is ready, we can head out. I'll track down the boy; I think he's pretty spooked."

Kishan refreshes the energy contained within her coat, channeling a bit of her will into it. Then, using its enchantment instead of her own power, she disappears from view under a fresh veil. Moving down the street after Julian, she comes to a halt at the foot of the building he dashed up with such bizarre agility. Summoning enough wind to fill the air around her and catch the gliding properties woven into the coat, she lifts herself slowly up to the top of the building. (Hands of Wind again).

Settling down a dozen feet or so from Julian, she drops the veil of invisibility before addressing him, "Julian? I understand that this must be very overwhelming, and that you must have questions. From your perspective, it must seem as though everyone wants something from you. All I want is to keep bad people from capturing you, so I want to assure you that I am not trying to capture you, and that I do not want anything from you. If you have questions, I will answer to the best of my ability."

Teenage Golem

Julian jumps up from his prone position with cat-like reflexes (almost as if he saw her break her veil). He raises his fists and hunches his shoulders and begins to bounce back and forth on the balls of his feet.

"I don't know you, I don't know what you want from me or why me! Just leave me alone, please! It's been such a messed up day, and I really don't want to do this!"

Face red with frustration and tears streaking down, he seems to contemplate a move, but hesitation keeps him in his place. He looks at the woman in front of him. Something about her seems so motherly, so trustworthy. His eyes well up and his vision goes blurry.

Julian drops his guard and falls to the ground on hands and knees and begins to let out a terrible sob.
"Lady please just don't hurt my family. Please, please, please. I'll do whatever you need me to, just please don't hurt them."

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Boston Private Detective

Pulling out his handy dandy credit card, Jarrod is quick to get a couple new tires installed onto his truck. "Damn price raises," he muttered angrily as the workers put them on. As Kishan went to wherever their rescuee went, he looked over at Aaron and asked, "Any idea where they would go?"

Hero Points: 4

"No clue."

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

@ Julian

"I understand that you don't know what is going on here, and that you don't know any of us; I want to give you the chance to ask questions, and learn what you need to know. I can start with some basics..."

She takes a deep breath before starting.

"First off, magic is real, but I figure you knew that by the way you practically ran up that wall. If it hadn't occurred to you before, I'm thinking that not all of your talents, varied as they are, are what they would call "God given."

"The same way magic is real, so are magical creatures; vampires, wizards, fairies, dragons, ghosts, spirits, and just about everything else you could think of; except leprechauns of course, I'm pretty sure those were just made up. Occasionally, one of those creatures breeds with a human, injecting a little bit of magic into an otherwise typical human bloodline. What happens next depends on the person, their lineage, and their circumstances, but frequently when those abilities come to the surface, what you get are people of extraordinary ability, or even supernatural power - the demigods of legend; everything from Heracles to Thor."

"Of course, the flip side of this is that some of the legendary bad guys are real too. Some of them have banded into groups for mutual protection, and to use their powers to manipulate society. One of those groups is here in Boston. Over the past couple of years, they have started kidnapping everyone they can lay their hands on that has any kind of natural in-born magical ability. We think that those are the guys that set you up. They planted the stuff in your trunk to have an excuse to pick you up. While I've no doubt there are plenty of good cops out there, there are doubtlessly as well those that are firmly in the pocket of the bad guys, though they may not know who it is they work for, or care, as long as the kickbacks keep coming. That's who we think those cops were, and where we think they were taking you. You'd have never made it to your parents. You'd have been reported as having slipped away or escaped during transit, only to have conveniently gone missing afterwards, killed during an escape attempt, or be determined to be some sort of national security risk, and vanished to come CIA black site. No doubt emails would pop up shortly after confirming you were some sort of terrorist sympathizer."

"If you want to see what is going on, I invite you to come along with us. One of my friends took your place with the cops, so they don't actually know you've given them the slip yet. As you saw, he can make himself look like anyone, if he needs to. Come with me, and I'll take you where they've taken him, and you can see for yourself. I'm not going to force you to come, and you have my word that you can leave at any time if you wish it."

"So Julian, do you want to see what is really going on in the world when the blinders come off?"

Teenage Golem

Julian sits up with his knees to his chest and contemplates Kishan's words.

"M-magic? Is r-real? I... I dont know what to say or ask... Are you some sort of ...uh... witch or something? I'll come along but I don't know about this magic stuff. I just wanna make sure my family is all right."

He gets to his feet and dusts himself off. He lets out a deep, nervous, chuckle as he replies "I'll take the red pill, Madam Morpheus".
Julian awkwardly juts out his massive hand "My name is Julian, but practically everyone at school calls me 'The Hammer'. It's kind of embarrassing, you don't have to call me that."

Teenage Golem

When their hands touch:

A sharp shudder tremors through Julian, and his demeanor swiftly changes again to something more dour and predatory. The handshake turns uncomfortable as his grip tightens just a little too much and the shake lasts just a little too long. His breathing becomes a heavy, grinding stone-on-stone wheeze and his eyes lock directly onto Kishan's Her choice if she returns the stare. After a brief moment, his jovial youthfulness returns.
"So how about we get down from here?"

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

Kishan takes the young man's hand, and shakes it. She meets his gaze for a bare moment, but then shifts her gaze back towards the directions from which they came, so it does not necessarily look as though she is avoiding his gaze.

Best to leave the soul-gaze until he knows what such a thing is.

"Sounds like a good idea. Would you prefer to get down on your own, or come down with me?"

Teenage Golem

"I... I can get myself down. It's as simple as climbing down for me. I don't know what it's like for you, but I know from, well, this game my friends and I play online that like.... magic people run out of mana? I can carry you down if you want? So you can save your energy or whatever. Hah usually it's a blue bar. I wonder if that's what it's like in real life?"
If Kishan agrees, Julian will lift her up with one arm and climb down the building as if it were a normal thing.

As they walk back to the others, Julian gets noticeably flustered and falls in line behind Kishan.
"So I guess these guys are your magic friends, huh?"
