"I think you're right. It may be our only option, disabling it one way or another. Unless our plan was to leave no trace we were ever here, would you try it?"

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Boston Private Detective

Quick question about the motion detectors: How are they arranged? Is there a way to maneuver around them without setting them off or having to disable them? Just in case you'd like a roll for it, I'll make a couple that might be relevant.

Computers: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14
Notice: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (12) + 16 = 28
Search: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (17) + 16 = 33

Changeling Rumpelstiltskin

"Warden, if you could cover me with your veil, I can go around the side of the building and peep in the windows. Though now I say that, I wonder if your veil will prevent the motion sensors from noticing us."

Craft: Mechanical: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20
Craft: Electrical: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15
Knowledge: Physical Sciences: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (10) + 14 = 24

John: The motion sensors are both passive and active. The passive part senses infrared energy emitted by the targets. The active part emits ultra-sonics (which Aaron can hear?). I suppose a veil vs sight and sound would work.

Jarrod: Someone could probably avoid the sensors with an acrobatics 20 check with some cinematic moves.

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

I do indeed have ultrahearing. Can you mention these sorts of things when you first mention them where relevant? My senses are technically "always on", I don't need to swap between different senses, so I would have seen/heard these things (I can see infrared and have ultrahearing, among many other things).

Upon Jarrod's explanation of how the sensors work, Aaron tunes his ears in to listen more closely to sounds beyond the range of human hearing, and dilates his pupils.

"Huh. Yeah, seems like you're right. They emit little "sound beams". You could avoid them pretty easily, if you knew where to avoid."

"I could slip through and see if there's a way to shut them off, no problem."

Aaron makes like Catherine Zeta-Jones and slides, flips, and wiggles his way around the motion sensors.

Take 10 for a 23 on Acrobatics (I have Skill mastery).

Sure. In this case, it didn't even occur to me to wonder how motion sensors might actually work until someone asked. If you are looking to get inside there is an elevator door and two staircases. Each of them has an RFID receiver on a little pad that you can swipe the card over.

Male Human Monk 5 (Qinggong Master of Many Styles from the Sacred Mountain)/Fighter (Brawler) 3

Right now I'm looking more for a way to shut off the motion sensors. Don't suppose there's a security pad or something over here?

Once you are close to the building, your thermal vision can see a junction box concealed behind a shrub. You can slip over to it without setting off the sensors.

Male Human Monk 5 (Qinggong Master of Many Styles from the Sacred Mountain)/Fighter (Brawler) 3

Aaron slips over to it, stealthily in case someone happens to be watching, or there's a very well hidden camera.

Take 10 for a 23 Stealth. And open the junction box, shutting off only the sensors if possible.

The whine of ultrasound dies out as the sensors are shut down. The roof is yours.

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

Aaron gives everyone the all clear signal and waves them over.

Liberty's Edge

Jarrod watched and shook his head as Aaron performed incredible acrobatics to get around the motion sensors. Hurrying over, he thanked the man before swiping the ID card through the scanner to the stairs. "I'd rather take the stairs and be under my own mobility in case something happens than be in a metal death trap," he explained to the others.

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

"Agreed. It'd be a bit cramped with everyone anyway. And if they detected us, they could just cut power and trap us."

Changeling Rumpelstiltskin

"And if we go down one at a time, the bomb the Warden expects won't get us all."

walks over, wipes the fingerprints off the junction box; then hands out gloves to all on roof

"No point in leaving evidence while we're looking for evidence."

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

Kishan nods thanks to John before slipping a pair of gloves on. She extends her feelings towards the entryways, looking for magical wards, alarms, or traps. Truth be told, she was not actually expecting the antipersonnel mines she'd mentioned - that was more of a worst case scenario, but it wasn't outside the realm of possibility. As a result, caution seemed the wisest course.

Magic Awareness: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (9) + 17 = 26

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

"Knew i forgot something in my prep kit. Actually, one second." Aaron says, and removes his green contacts, blinking a little as he does so, and storing them away before putting on the gloves.

"Much better. Almost couldn't see those infrared lines earlier."

As they descend, Aaron keeps his eyes, ears, and nose open for the signs of any trouble, particularly worrisome heat signatures through doors and the like.

Notice: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27

Kishan notices that the rooftop seems almost to hum with the magical energies of the ley line, but any spells worked here recently have been washed away by sunrise or are overshadowed by the background noise. There don't seem to be any standing wards, and the building is too new to have much of a threshold.

Aaron doesn't see anyone inside the building.

As you head down the stairs, you immediately notice that the rooms are cool and humid. You descend a set of modern stairs into a large modern open concept living/dining/kitchen area. You hear a click and a fire grows in the fireplace and the lights come on and the vertical blinds rotate to block the windows.

Above the fireplace is this artwork. On the table are a map of Boston and several photographs of a teenage boy. Coming out of school, in the neighborhood with friends, newspaper articles featuring his accomplishments.

On the kitchen island is a coffee table book called Mythic Serpents of the World.

Map

Changeling Rumpelstiltskin

examines articles about the boy, wondering what connection the Fomor has with him

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Boston Private Detective

"Right, because these photographs don't just scream Pedophilia," Jarrod muttered as he looked around the room. Walking over to the photographs, he studied the boy, wondering if he's seen him before.

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

"That's one explanation for them, but I doubt it. There's nothing overtly sexual about them, and they are all of the same youth. Looks more like surveillance than ogling. If this were not the Fomor, I would think the boy was likely a target for kidnapping and ransom. Given who they are and what we know of them however, I would expect it is more likely that he is a developing minor talent, or perhaps even a budding sorcerer. Is there a name anywhere? We should try to identify him, so we an intervene before they take him; to do whatever the Fomor are doing with all the minor talents they've captured."

She leafs through the photos and papers, looking fr notations that might indicate who the boy might be.

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

Forgot my Rivalry Complication. Should add in some good natured ribbing...

Kishan quirks a small wry smile. "I thought you said you were a Detective, Mr. Jackson; did you skip the days on surveillance and casing a target?"

Changeling Rumpelstiltskin

Don't joke about skipping investigation.
You realize we didn't even goggle this guy?
Even after we were told you could see pictures of him on-line with various important locals.
The kid could be his cover identity's son, who lives with the ex-wife.

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

Googol? That's something to do with computers, right? (Wizard)

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Boston Private Detective

Jarrod just shook his head at the Warden. "I see creepy photos taken of a kid, and I automatically think pedophilia," he said, glancing over at her. "Delt with a couple cases like that as a cop and as a PI. Its never pretty." Shrugging his shoulders, he placed the picture down and wandered to the book. "But you're probably right. If anything, he might be another with the blood they've been looking for. Hey, Aaron, you know anything about this book?"

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

"I don't think so. Let me have a read." Aaron picks it up and flips through it.

The boy's name is Julian Avivi. He is an attractive high school student and star athlete in track and, in this season, football. There are articles related to his record setting track and field performances, as well as his dynamic and dominating play on the football field. He attends St. Michael Academy, a private school in the suburbs.

Buried in the pile is a photo of the boy holding a trophy, carried by his team mates. His head and face are circled in red sharpie and on top of the article are written the words, "The boy would be a useful weapon in our quest. Acquire him." The article is from October 9. It is currently October 14.

The book is the sort of book that collects a lot of art without much written content. The sort of thing you would find in the bargain books at a big retail book store. As you flip through, you see post its on several pages where dragons are pictured with damsels and/or trees.

"Interesting. Why are a pair of wolves in a book about serpents?"

That third image is supposed to be adam and eve and the serpent by Michelangelo. Not sure why the link is broken.

Male Human Monk 5 (Qinggong Master of Many Styles from the Sacred Mountain)/Fighter (Brawler) 3

You messed up the [/url] tag, so it' part of the URL.

But it still leads to a picture of a man fighting two wolves if I fix it.

Can you repost that link? It keeps being messed up for me in that post when I try to edit it.

Male Human Monk 5 (Qinggong Master of Many Styles from the Sacred Mountain)/Fighter (Brawler) 3

Here.

Thanks.

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

No problem.

"It's a picture book. Looks like maybe they were researching mythical serpents, maybe to find the origin of dragon myths for the sword, or something else they have?"

Male Human Monk 5 (Qinggong Master of Many Styles from the Sacred Mountain)/Fighter (Brawler) 3

So, what now?

Changeling Rumpelstiltskin

heads off to:
- check the other bedrooms for signs of occupancy
- to see if the main bedroom was slept in last night
- checks the answering machine for any messages
- checks kitchen to see what foods are stocked (a missing spice could give us a clue to a weakness and a stock of something in particular could give us more information about his biology)
- looks for hidden vault or cache
- whatever else we think of

Search: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
Notice: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (6) + 12 = 18

looks around for help, as he's not having much luck

In the bedroom marked 3 on the map there is no furniture, but there is a summoning circle of a coppery looking metal set into the floor. There is no sign that anyone uses the bed in the master suite or bedroom 2.

There is a large tub in the master bath that is more like an infinity pool with water filtration, conditioning, and jets for swimming.

In the room marked "media room," there is a floor to ceiling cylindrical aquarium about 8 feet in diameter with what appears to be a reef, fish, urchins, and a strange looking violet colored octopus.

In the kitchen you find a lot of high quality sushi tools, and the fridge is stocked with 20 live lobsters wrapped in seaweed. No spices or condiments that you can find.

I'll give everyone time to chime in on anything they particularly want to do here, then we will get to some action.

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Boston Private Detective

Walking into the media room, Jarrod's eyes are immediately drawn to the aquarium. It was a large affair, much more intricate than his old goldfish's bowl when he was a kid. Stepping closer, he begins to examin it for anything unusual.

Notice: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (16) + 16 = 32
Search: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (11) + 16 = 27

The violet octopus, about six feet in diameter, slides across the tank toward Jarrod. If you didn't know better, you would swear it was eyeing you maliciously. It presses its suckers against the tank and you see that inside each tentacle is an amber claw, shaped like a cat's claw and equally retractable.

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

Aaron investigates the summoning circle for any weird sights or scents.

Notice: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 26

Any signs that it was used recently? Salt grains, sulfur smell, lingering demonic presence, hot copper, etc.?

Sorry if I'm posting slower than usual...I'm not a good investigator. I suck at mysteries in games.

The room with the circle is very clean, not a speck of dust anywhere. There are some scratches on the floor inside the circle, like from human sized hands with claws.

The elevator is extraordinarily quiet and sound proofed, but Aaron can hear it approaching with his super hearing, giving him the chance to warn the others that someone is coming and take a full round of actions before the elevator arrives.

Initiative

Jarrod Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Aaron Initiative: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
Odd John Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 18
Kishan Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Elevator Initiative: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

So Aaron, Kishan, John, Jarrod, Aaron, Kishan, Elevator, John, Jarrod.

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

"Elevator's coming. Fight or flee?"

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

"Damn. I can veil us... but I don't know whether one of them could see through that or not, or even just feel the magic... Wait!"

Kishan moves out in front of the others, closing her eyes in focus. "Get your cell phones behind me."

"गड़बड़!"

She opens her hands in a thrusting motion towards the elevator, and the roof above it. Random energies spill out in a concentrated technological hex.

Using my Luck point to power stunt a Hex spell:
Magic: Negate Technology 9 (Area: Cone; Affects objects only; Subtle)

As every light bulb on that side of the apartment simultaneously blinks out, a grinding sound is suddenly heard from the ceiling above the apartment, where the elevator machinery upon the roof suddenly shorts out, and grinds to a halt.

Kishan moves back to the desk, scooping up the files and pictures on the boy. "Lets grab what we came for. Whomever is in that elevator will either be there until the repairman comes to let him out, or will have to tear his way out, mutant frog-man style, which we should be able to hear pretty easily if he chooses that option. Would you rather wait and have a chat, or make a quick exit?"

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

"I'm up for a chat." Aaron says dryly.

"Let's go."

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Boston Private Detective

Jarrod was quick to get behind the Warden. He liked his cell phone, thank you very much. As the elevator ground to a halt, he used his aformentioned cell phone to take pictures of the photos and the strangely colored octopus. That thing really gave him the creeps...

With all the pictures he needed taken, he looked at the others. "I'm all for a good conversation, but I think we should follow the better part of valor right now," he said, motioning to the way they came in.

Changeling Rumpelstiltskin

"Maybe we should make it only a short retreat?
Drop back to the other roof and see who comes out of the elevator?
I don't want to have to deal with a security guy or a cop, but I'd like to see if Frogboy survived.
And maybe fix it if he did.
Or maybe learn something from who-ever it is.
Our big problem now is that we don't know what they're up to.
Also, if it's security, they may be coming over the roof as well."

heads up stairs towards roof after grabbing the pictures of Julian Avivi.

John, Jarrod, and Kishan beat feet up the stairs as Aaron takes a step toward the elevator. John makes it to the top of the stairs first. The electronic locks are trashed, forcing him to pop the emergency open switch on the door.

Scanning the roof, you see no threats and can move to onto the rooftop balcony or further as you wish.

Taking some liberties based on what you guys said you wanted to do. I am assuming that Aaron will follow once he sees the group is headed out, since he is out of touch at the moment. So I guess the question is whether you are heading out or trying to see what comes out of the elevator.

Changeling Rumpelstiltskin

I'm for hiding and watching, perhaps to brawl. What's ya'lls vote?

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

"I'd suggest we move back to the neighbouring roof. I'll veil us, and we can watch... and see what happens."
