It is Tuesday October 13 2015, the new moon, 9:30 p.m. Clouds and light pollution blot out the stars, giving the night an orange glow. The air is moist and cool. It will rain by morning. You are near the Reserved Channel in South Boston. Fort Independence sulks to the east, a toothless giant looking out toward the Atlantic. The people of Boston may be vigilant when it comes to parades and marathons, but they would hardly expect that the greatest threat to their safety comes from the Ocean. The men and canons are gone from the fort. The smells of grilled meat and fat waft from Sullivan’s Castle Island. A few tourists and locals enjoy the crisp autumn air. Sullivan’s says they will close if there are more gulls in the parking lot than cars, but tonight the gulls are gone. Perhaps they know something.

Nearby is the Conley Container Terminal, where giant white cranes move cargo from container ships in the Reserved Channel. The port is fairly dead tonight. No cruise ships are docked across the channel and only one ship is in port. As a crane lifts a dingy white container and turns toward the stacks of containers, a group of dockworkers wait so receive it on the ground. Nearby, supervising the operation, is a black sedan and three heavily built men in black suits, turtlenecks, and, strangely, sunglasses. You hear a sound like a giant pop gun and perhaps see a jet of fire lance from the doors of the container. Then the carefully balanced container lurches in the air and begins to tilt.

Links there to some interesting spots. I figure having maps give you more narrative control, and I like for modern games to be a little bit travelogue. Feel free to fill in details, what you have been up to, add places your character frequents. This area is still fairly working class despite some gentrification.

'I hate nights like this,' Jarrod thought to himself, paying for his hotdog. "Keep the change," he mumbled to the vendor. Walking away with hotdog in hand, he glanced around the warf in disinterest. Between jobs at the moment, he thought briefly about skulking around the piers for work before giving it up for a warm bed alcohol. Walking along the waterfront path on the way to his apartment, he was brought out of thoughts of his family, long since dead now, by what sounded like a gunshot.

Dropping what was left of his dinner, he spun around, longcoat twirling behind him, as he reached for his shotgun. Looking around for danger, he spotted a bright glow from the piers. "Looks like I'll working tonight after all," he said to himself with a grim smile as he rushed off into the distance.

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

Aaron walked up and down the pier, pacing with his sword bag slung over his shoulder. He pulled his sunglasses down a bit, slit pupils scanning the area. He never wore the contacts when he went out at night, they interfered with his vision too much.

Where is he? Frank told me he had his hands on a real rarity this time. He was supposed to be here an hour ago.

A moment later a shot rang out a spot burnt whitehot across his vision in the distance for just a moment.

"That's not normal." he muttered to himself, loosened the bindings on his sword and readied it to draw, heading toward the disturbance silently.

"Looks like trouble- better check on Drachman."

Latimer walked briskly towards Sullivan's, salivating over the thought of a congratulatory Lobster Roll. He'd gotten a lot done that day, completed 3 different commissions, but forgotten to actually stop and eat anything. As the he approached the entrance, he heard a sharp crack of sound from the docks, and his head snapped left to look. He'd been jumpy since the Warden's gave him a tail. He saw a burst of flame, and the container coming loose. He checked his pocket for his wand, paused, and cursed under his breath before abandoning his quest for dinner, and rushing to a shadowed corner. Once hidden from view, he went invisible and rushed towards the impending disaster as fast as his enchanted boots would take him.

Lakshmi Kishan walked slowly along the edge of Pleasure Bay. She was not going anywhere in particular, but figured she might as well head towards the Fort and see it while she was in this part of town to visit. She'd been down to try out a small restaurant called Cafe Mamtaz, as it was recommended to her by a friend at the University as having very authentic and unpretentious Indian food. She'd been in a foul mood of late, and thought some comfort food might help her feel a bit more at ease. However, the cafe was primarily a lunch spot, and while it was unpretentious, the recipes they'd boasted were more like the equivalent of Indian fast-food than the familiar flavours and smells she'd been looking for. Unable to summon up an appetite, she'd left without ordering.

Since, she'd been walking a bit aimlessly; enjoying the cool early autumn sea air.

When the explosion boomed out, she'd been taken a bit off guard, realizing just then how far afield her thoughts had been drifting. Stiffling the spell she'd almost brought to bear, she looked towards the crane and the dangling container, and speeds herself towards it; the chances of it being magical related were ridiculously remote, and yet her mind instantly turned to thinking that she might be able to help if there were an emergency.

She would have to keep a low profile, lest she wish to make a spectacle of herself, but the enchantments she'd laid down into her coat made it highly unlikely she would ever be identified. They confused any image that anyone might try to capture of her, and no matter the device, be it film camera, digital, security footage, or 4K HD equipment, she would always appear to be out of focus. While the operator's of such equipment would no doubt be terribly confused as to the reason, her image would be merely a blob, a motion blur, or an over-exposed mess. The idea had seemed very clever to her when she'd devised it, but she hadn't really had heroics in mind when she came up with the idea.

Closing on the loading yard, she brought to mind a few different magical constructs and spells, figuring that this must be some sort of accident, and that there might be workers in need of rescue.

Still new to the area, he had been spending time wandering around. Seeking out the places that had stood the test of time was one of the best ways to learn a city. Thus he had a lobster roll in hand when the commotion started. He stepped into the parking lot and between two vans, he slipped from view. Most mortals wouldn't catch him as he took to the wind and slipped into the maze of containers looking for the trouble.

stealth (hide in plain sight): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (5) + 14 = 19
notice: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28

You are approximately 1000 feet from the large white crane when you begin moving. Beside the public road is an 8 foot tall fence topped by steel bars that
bend toward the road (Climb DC 15). Beyond that is 400 feet of parking lot and then a chainlink fence with some not-so-serious barbed wire (Climb DC 5), no
concertina or razor wire. There are many places to hide among the stacked containers. Containers are 8 feet 6 inches tall and are stacked two to four high. You
can easily get within 100 feet of the sedan without being seen unless you project fire or something.

As you rush toward the tilting container, the container doors fall open and two blackened human shapes fall fifty feet toward the concrete below. A third
figure slides out as well, but someone inside the container manages to grab his legs. The face, hands, and torso of a teenage boy dangle precipitously from the
container as the dock workers below race away and the three suited figures reach for weapons in their jackets.

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

As she moves up towards the fence, Lakshmi draws the sword from the hidden infinite pocket in her jacket. With two quick strokes she slashes an "X" in the chain link, and ducks through. Not realizing she might need it again, she slips the sword back into her pocket, doubling down on her pace to reach the yard.

Good thing I'm a runner...

As she starts to get closer, and she starts to see the people, the burned bodies that drop, and the suited goons reaching for weapons, she starts to have second thoughts about the whole thing. However, still fearing someone might need her help, she pulls up a veil, vanishes from sight, and then continues moving forward.

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

Aaron easily leaps the fence and then decides to sprint the rest of the way, it being further than he originally thought.

I have Speed 1 (which gives me 60 ft. movement I think?) and Leaping 2 (again not entirely sure how high that lets me jump, but pretty sure it's more than 8 feet).

He arrives just in time to see the corpses fall from the container, and the boy meet nearly the same fate.

What the hell? Why was someone in that container in the first place?

Aaron decides the time for Stealth is over, and leaps the 50 feet up to the container, catching a humanoid scent to his left but putting it out of his mind for now.

He can smell Lakshmi, but not see or hear her.

I can Take 10 even in combat, and I can leap 80 feet with that 10.

"You okay kid?"

What do I see?

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

Keep in mind that the container is tipping precariously... if a man suddenly slams down onto one end of a poorly balanced see-saw (with a lot of kinetic energy), you may end up tipping it the rest of the way vertical, and dumping yourself, and everyone inside onto the hard concrete 50 ft below...

Male Human Monk 5 (Qinggong Master of Many Styles from the Sacred Mountain)/Fighter (Brawler) 3

Ah, well, Aaron obviously didn't think this plan through. If it comes to that, he's really good at Acrobatics and has good Toughness and Regeneration. I can break the kid's fall with my own, right?

Though one still wonders why people were in this container while it was on a crane.

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

People crammed into a cargo container is a staple of a lot of movies with Human Trafficking subplots (and may be truth in fiction). My main concern would not be about the kid hanging off the edge, but if there another 100 people in the container that you can't see from the ground. You'd have a hard time holding on if you take 100 pairs of shoes to the face as they all tumble out, not to mention breaking their falls...

Male Human Monk 5 (Qinggong Master of Many Styles from the Sacred Mountain)/Fighter (Brawler) 3

Well, one question for the GM before I can decide if this was entirely my mistake or made sense IC: Since the crane is tilted, can I see inside? I can see in the dark, see heat signatures, and have telescopic vision. If there are a bunch of people in there it should be lit up like a Christmas tree. If so, I'd probably do something different.

Hero points: 1/0; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

Jasper will fly around to see into the crate as he approaches. Seeing somebody jump up, he gets his tendrils ready to catch anybody that tumbles out. He's not strong, but he hopes he can at least slow people down.

*pulls out a badge and gun* Memetic police, you're under arrest for the crime of linking to TV Tropes without posting the a warning. I lost my brother to TV Tropes for six months, so just give me an excuse.

Liberty's Edge

Jarrod stopped at the fence and sighed. I'm getting too old for this' he thought before gripping the fence.

Climb: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

He got most of the way up before losing his grip and tumbling back down. He slowly got back up before noticing a hole in the fence. Slapping his forehead in exasperation, he quickly utilized the shortcut and ran through. As he got closer, he could barely make out a couple figures drop from the hanging container. A four-letter word escaped his lips as he pushed himself harder. When he got to the next fence, he didn't give it a thought and ran through another hole. It was as he got closer that he gripped his shotgun tightly. A man jumped all the way into the container. "Damn it, more supernatural shit," he muttered.

As Aaron runs across the concrete, he detects the strong smell of ammonia and fish from the suited men.

Aaron lands in the container with a thud. He sees a chain of men lying on the floor, each holding the next in support of the kid hanging out the open mouth of the container. At the back of the container, maybe 40 sets of eyes gaze back. There heat signatures are those of normal humans, and the stench of their humanity is almost overpowering. These people have been in this container for a while.

Terrified by the explosion and a man "flying" into the container, one of the men in the chain lets go, and the kid and two men slide out into nothing.

At the same time, the three men by the sedan clear MAC-11 machine pistols from their jackets and let loose a burst at the jumping hero, missing wildly and splanging the container with bullets (which probably spark in a cinematic and unrealistic fashion).

Sounds like initiative, but we can stay in blocks. I will just go after all of you. Remember that you have 1 Hero Point. On a 2D map, the sedan is about 50 feet from where the container will land if it comes straight down from where it is.

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

"Shit." Aaron mutters to himself, and he tries to catch the leg of the last man in the chain.

I assume I could have acted before three people fell all the way out? Do I need a Reflex check or something?

You can grab one or two guys, I think the kid is out though. Fortunately, Jasper is there to help =)

Edit: Catch 2 guys.

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

Aaron lunges and catches the ankles of two of the guys, locking his feet in place to stop himself from meeting the same fate.

He frantically tries to pull them up in time to drop after the kid, horrified he might have to watch him splat on the pavement below.

Male Human Artificer | Hero points: 1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

Latimer runs up and over the fence, and towards the commotion, and gets momentarily lost in the maze of containers, and arrives, still concealed, just as a boy falls out towards the pavement. In a panic, he goes for his wand, shouts "Dis!" and tries to snatch the boy out of the air.

Mystic Knowledge: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (19) + 16 = 35

The boy's fall slows and veers away from the container and the hail of bullets. Latimer focuses on moving the boy away from harm and begins muttering to himself, "Pleasedon'tgetshotpleasedon'tgetshotpleasedon'tgetshot..."

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Boston Private Detective

Jarrod dove behind cover as bullets started flying. 'Hopefully it's just normal humans firing the guns,' he thought to himself as he loaded his shotgun with rock salt rounds. "Time to take people in," he muttered as he looked around the crate. He was momentarily distracted as another body started falling before slowing down and moving to the side. 'At least someone's on my side,' he spared before taking aim at the nearest suit and firing.

About how close would the nearest suit be? Rock Shot has a range of 40ft and stuns enemies hit.

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

Thank God. Aaron thinks as the kid is saved from falling doom.

Detective Jackson, you can only get within 100 feet of the suits and remain hidden, but can easily get to within 40 feet and be behind something smaller than a crate.

Liberty's Edge

Male Human Boston Private Detective

I'm closer than 100ft, and hiding behind something. What all is there to hide behind within 40ft?

Let's go with some pallets stacked up with boxes of fruit. That will be nice and messy

Hero points: 1/0; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

Jasper reaches for the boy as he starts slowing of his own accord. Seeing others react to the gunmen, he moves toward the suits while smoke starts billowing out. The gunmen will it hard to see, but nobody else will find it overly bothering.

Changeling Rumpelstiltskin

Odd John moves quickly towards the ruckus, scaling the first fence Climb: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13 partway before becoming stuck and needing to dissolve the bars to get through transform metal to sand.

The second barrier is easier to climb Climb: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25 and he ends up with the sedan between him and the suited goons.

When the gunfire starts, he sneaks towards the vehicle Speed R1 is 100 ft/rnd, Stealth is at 1/2 move, so 2 move actions this round gets him to the car 100 ft away 1st Stealth: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (11) + 13 = 24 2nd Stealth: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25

Ducking down and grasping the bumper, his hands appear to sink into the material as his eyes take on the color of the sedan. I'm switching my array to Waken. I intend to use it on the car next round and have it move towards the goons, hoping to scatter them and keep them from firing at the container.

Liberty's Edge

Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18Remember, using rock shot which causes stun I stead of damage.

Warden Kishan of the White Council | Hero points: 4; Luck 1/1; Bruises/Wounds/Conditions: 0/0/0

Finally drawing close enough to get a better view of what is going on, she is highly surprised to hear the gunfire break loose on the tilting container.

So much for accident... what did I just get myself into?

She moves to a covered position, away from the men in suits, but covered from the man she sees opposing them, firing with his shotgun from behind a stack of pallets.

Ok, those guys are shooting at the folks up there, who are in trouble... and people don't usually willingly ride in containers, so the suits are probably the bad guys here. So who does that make Mr. Buckshot over there? And what should I do about all this? I don't see anything supernatural here so far.

How did that guy get up to the container? I'm sure he wasn't there a minute ago... Just then, she sees the wisp of smoke grab the falling man and lower him down safely. Ok, now that was not normal...

From where she is, she reaches out with her senses, to determine if there is magic at play in more than just the smoke; are the suits magic using magic too, or is it just one side...

A haze reaches out toward the suits as Odd John reaches into the sedan. Detective Jackson fires a stunning round at the rearmost suit. The shot takes the man in the back center mass, knocking him forward onto his hands and knees. His pistol slides from his grip and skips across the concrete.

Kishan:
There is a hole in the door of the container has some residual magic, as do the suits that the, well, suits are wearing. There is also some substantial magic wrapped around the sedan, and something powerful within it.

John:
The sedan appears to be a modern sedan, but all of the parts that would normally be made from iron appear to be made of dense plastics

The two remaining suits concentrate their fire on Aaron, spraying him with bullets. The small caliber bullets bounce off of his tough skin.

Jarrod gave a grim smile as the first man fell. 'At least the rock salt works,' he thought as he aimed at the next suit. Pumping his shotgun to load the next round, he took aim and fired again. 'Gotta keep them from hitting anybody in the container.'

using Wake on the car-like object and sending it towards the goons

"Vroom, Vroom; Screetch!" Shouted the small man as he climbed atop the trunk of the vehicle, adding a child's sound effects to the 'toy's' real actions.

tumbler:
'Wake' is sustained and touch. If it's an object, the car gets no resistance roll. John is holding on with wall-crawling. There may be a good chance he will be thrown free in the event of a collision, your choice. How do you want you figure out if the car hits? Here's a d20 roll if you want to use it. 1d20 ⇒ 9

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

Oh, is it our turn again?

Aaron had originally planned to leap down and bring the container to ground level, but the introduction of hostiles changed that opinion.

Charge action, I can leap up to 160 feet with a Take 10 on Acrobatics (80 feet for a 23, x2).

Aaron launches himself through the air to the center Fomor, cracking the ground slightly beneath him. He whips out his sword the instant he hits the ground and swings it, swiftly stepping and slicing nearby Fomor if any fall.

Assuming these are Minions, I can Take 10 on each attack roll for a 19 on the first and 17 on each subsequent. If my Rank 7 damage drops one, my Takedown attack lets me step 5 feet and attack another, and so on and so on. If they are NOT Minions I can only do this once, so here's two attack rolls:

Attack 1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Attack 2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23

The two suits topple under a barrage of shotgun fire and dragonblood enhanced muscle. The car rolls toward them, menacing the downed figures.

Safe on the ground, the teen boy, scrawny, black hair, olive bronze skin, haze of a half formed beard around his face, runs to one of the scorched men who fell from the container when it first opened. He grabs the man's face, looking for any sign of life, murmuring.

Arabic:
Majd, Majd, wake up. Wake up. I didn't mean it. We had to get out Majd.

Toughness: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

Toughness: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Changeling Rumpelstiltskin

If they're down and out, I can release the car. Notice: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29If appropriate.

Aaron:
There is a big heat signature, like an overgrown Shaquille Oneil, in the sedan. It is somewhat cooler than a typical human.

John:
The windows of the sedan are darkly tinted, but your Notice check sees a large person shift in the back seat of the car

Draconic Human. Hero Points 2/3

How are the Fomor doing? Injured or incapacitated?

Aaron briefly shifts focus to the car, but decides until whatever that is gets out, the more immediate threats should be dealt with first.
