Tavros passes on the grog, drinking from his waterskin when he can instead. He his days with a mix of martial arts kata, dance practice, and attempting to make a simple fishing tool that's really little more than a hook attached to string to see if anything is biting. His nights are spent attempting to get the sailors to accept dance lessons or simply entertaining with performances.

Day 10 - All day

There isn't much to do on a ship unless you are part of the crew, so the group works on their hobbies, artistry and attempts to entertain themselves and others. Tavros has mixed results in dancing with the crew, but does get a few to sign on and attempt to learn his moves.

Teniel and Makoto work on refurbishing the ships figurehead. Currently it is a buxom woman looking forward. A standing joke among the crew is to climb or swing out in front of the woman and rub her ample bosom for good luck. As the pair examine it, they can see that wood is well worn. There is some concern from the crew that you will ruin all the good luck that has been worn in over the years, but the captain figures a fresh paint job won't hurt anything. There is also a standing joke that the figurehead is supposed to represent her, although the resemblance isn't quite there. As word gets out, quite a few of the crew, having become quite accustomed to the oddity of your group, grow brave, and offer you Makoto and Teniel bribes on the side to make the figurehead look more like the captain.

Lucina has some troubles sleeping. The eye she was given by the old crone seems to come to her in dreams and she will see in floating vaguely in the upper corner staring at her, or as one of the eyes of people in her dreams. The eye seems to be searching and she wonders if it is a manifestation of her will to find Goodwin.

Alree An spends much time meditating. She often spends nights staring out over the deck seated on a carpet she lays down and sits cross legged at. Occasionally she will sleep there as well under the stars instead of her quarters. Lucina, often sleepless herself has run into Alree most nights as she steps on the deck to get some fresh air.

"Tell me of your dreams?"

Lucina isn't quite comfortable around the crew but would try to offer help when she could be of assistance, after losing her dream journal being kept up with nightmares would likely bother her more than normal and would happily share any and all of her dreams with Alree; unless stopped she would start with the dreams she had while in Goodwin's domain and move onto the more recent ones.

The stories of her older dreams are mostly traditional dreams of happy memories with the Goodwin family while the tales of the more recent dreams are kept short and broken.

"I don't like the dreams here, their darker than back home. The sea and the eye that just keeps...twitching." She shudders slightly.

Teniel has never carved such a large piece of wood before; but this is also his first time in a boat larger than Tavros's arm. While Makoto re-paints the woman, he idly engraves etched patterns into the bow wood around it, covering them in a heavy pitch, until the woman looks as though she rides forward on a wind of brown petals.

Hadn't responded to this. There is a small amount of metal available, although they aren't just handing it out necessarily. The same for leather. The supplies are to fix and manufacture items around the ship. You would have to negotiate with the captain regarding this.

Lucina sits with Alree An and they talk and discuss Lucina's dreams. Alree An listens intently and is quite focused on Lucina's descriptions. "I am not skilled at interpretation, but I believe you have an ability and this eye you speak of that was given to you, it is curious. Do you believe if you believe it to be a boon or a bane? Why would the crone give it to you? I wonder if she knew or suspected something about you."

She listens with great interest in the latest dreams that Lucina had on the island after acquiring the eye and regarding the undersea structure and associated dreams.

"The deities have interesting ways of working their influence. I wonder if this is a way of attempting to tip off us mortals without direct involvement. They have always acted ... strangely ... when it comes to matters of the Destroyer." She bows her head reverently and adds, "No disrespect meant to the gods of course. They guides us in so many ways, but are often a mystery for us to understand. I believe this is a challenge and in many ways strengthens our faith and need to seek greater understanding." she sighs contemplatively.

"Will you continue to share with me your dreams? I think there is something to them, something that we should pay attention to. I feel as if I did not stumble on to your group by accident. My travels have always seemed to place me where I need to be. I will do my best to help you find your missing mentor."

She grasps Lucina by the hand. "If we reach a reasonably sized city, I can perform a Commune. It requires a lot of incense usually, but if I can get access to it, we can ask some questions of the gods if they are willing to answer. They don't like to share too much information, but if our questions are direct and specific, we can get some answers. Think on this if you have time."

"May I see this eye that was given to you?"

Day 11

Teniel and Makoto spend another day working their artistry on the ship's figurehead, carving, sanding, painting, patching and repairing. They work quickly and expertly, and keep their work somewhat under wraps from the crew, concealing the progress with a blind before it is revealed.

The crew, curious, but trying to be sly about it, continually ask if the new figurehead resembles the captain more, and they grin and snicker about it looking slyly about to make sure she isn't watching.

Teniel does what he can to indicate (without ever saying it) that yes, while they are willing to make the figurehead resemble the captain more, a few friendly bribes of whatever small coin or tools the sailors aren't using would certainly be welcome. (we could definitely use a few pocket knives, twine, and pocket change...)

The sailors definitely smuggle you pieces of wood, leather and metal in exchange for their elaborate prank. There seems to be core contingent of about eight of them in on it. The captain is not oblivious, and suspects something 'funny' is going on, but how much harm can come from such a project. She more or less ignore the crew's silliness.

It's not easy to get enough leather to make a proper suit of armor; but Teniel instead uses the pieces of leather and metal he gains to craft proper leather faces for his kulit stencils. (Proper Wayang stencils are made of leather patterns riveted to wooden skeletons, and now I've got a proper set)

Alree An takes the eye gently, "Oh my, its sort of spongy." She gazes at it briefly and seems lost on thought. She examines it for a bit, focusing and detecting magic. "I cannot tell much about it, but it does have potent divination abilities. Despite the nightmares it may perhaps be bringing you, I think this to be a powerful tool if the dreams can be interpreted correctly. I have a gift for you." She reaches into a small pack and pulls forth a small doeskin bound book. "Here, a new dream journal for you." Smiling, she passes the small journal to Lucina, who examines it, and finds a fresh untouched set of sheets ready for her memories. "Have you tried directing your dreams? Are you able to dream lucidly ever?" She pauses thinking, "I often dream of the stars, the void above us, sometimes I am flying through them swiftly, towards some unknown destination. I have not been successful at understanding its meaning. Perhaps there is none. I am priestess of the void and travel however, surely the deities are trying to tell me something no?" She frowns slightly. "No matter for now. Look they appear to be ready to unveil the figurehead." She claps her hands and walks to the front of the ship where most of the crew seem to be assembled.

"Day 12"

The ship has traveled swiftly, continuing its journey back to port. In that time Makoto and Teniel work diligently on the figurehead, and in his spare time, Teniel works tirelessly on his own crafts supplied somewhat in secret by the crew. Finally they complete their work, and decide to have the unveiling that evening near sunset as the figurehead looks to the west into the setting sun as the ship travels. The crew is eager to see freshly painted and newly carved figurehead, and the smaller contingent is even more eager to see the resemblance to the captain as part of their bawdy joke.

How will you proceed with the unveiling ceremony?

I'm pretty sure Maks will have some questions for Alree after we get a break from the ceremony; assuming Lucina shares any of that information with her. :)

Maks will still be putting finishing touches on the figure head with her paints, even as they're unveiling it. Little bits of detail to help finish up and secure the likeness was as spot-on as they could manage. As a result, she's not 'front-stage' when all of this is occurring. She'd have done her best to make the figurehead more on the tasteful side, however. Trickster urges or not.

Before letting anyone see the figurehead, Teniel gives a short speech while Maks finishes. "A figurehead is a living thing," he explains, "As much as any ship. We carved it not in perfect likeness of any one human—for, as the Dalangs teach, such a Golek might trap a sleeping dreamer's soul, and cause array. An homage, perhaps, its form; one to guide the voices that inhabit it to their master's call. In the Wayang isles of my birth, the siluman of the sea and danyang of the ocean are said to prefer objects of fine art; if we have done our job here, such a friendly spirit may choose to inhabit the figurehead, seducing the spirits of the wind through her beauty and grace, bringing good luck and guidance to your ship. Take care to treat her with respect and care; never touch your ship's figurehead while wearing green, but bring her small sweets once a month, and she will do her best to not fail you."

Tavros, completely obvious to the joke and not wanting to get in the way of the more eager sailors, remains towards the back. After all, he would see it eventually. There was no need to see it right this moment If he's managed to make any friends from his nightly dance lessons and he notices them also in the back, straining to see, he will offer to lift them up. And possibly to hold them over the side of the ship.

When he hears Teniel's speech, he'll rather loudly whisper to a neighbor, "Why can't you wear green?"

"Green is the sacred color of the Ratu Laut," Teniel replies to Tavros, as he steps down from the front of the ship, "Queens of the sea in Wayang tongue, or what you would 'Elemental Princes of the Plane of Water.' To seek the favor of any other spirit in such garb is considered a show of minor disrespect by followers of the gods of moon and forest."

The figurehead complete, Makoto putting the finishing touches on, Teniel speaks before the assembled crew that isn't actively sailing the ship. Tavros is in the back with a small gang of sailors who have begun to hang out the last few days. Alree An and Lucina also hang out near the back.

As Teniel gives his speech, his diminutive form in front of the crowd slowly pushing forward to see as Makoto pulls back the tarp that had been shielding the work. The crew strains their necks and tries to peer out over the front, but listens to Teniel's performance raptly. Some of them nod solemnly while others have puzzled looks on their faces. And a few are eagerly scooting closer and looking furtively at Captain Miar's reaction.

A rousing cheer and loud clapping complete the speech and the crew rush forth in a semi-orderly fashion to lean over the side and gaze as the exquisite reconstruction project. The colors sparkle in the setting sun as what remains of the light plays off of the water and some of the metallic colors in the figurehead.

The crew jostles each other as they move to clamber out the touch the figurehead for good luck, stripping any green off before their turn. Despite Teniel's statement that the figurehead does not represent any one person there is some resemblance to the captain, perhaps left open to interpretation. The small band of pranksters, seemingly pleased, snicker as they move out to run their hands over the figurehead for good luck, making quite a show of caressing the bared bosom of the figurehead.

From the back Tavros strains to see what the joke is and listens to the babble of the excited crew. Near the front Captain Miar smiles politely and in a congratulatory manner to the artists. She clearly sees the resemblance and takes it in stride. Some of the pranksters jostle her with their elbows grinning. She cuffs them on the heads and gives them a shove with her boot as they tumble to the deck cackling. The captain grumbles "The figurehead seems far more well endowed than I am. Hmmph."

Three of the crew near the captain, ones she smacked and pushed down, still laughing, one a youngish woman, with short scruffy brown hair and a long scar over her face and clothes so ratty, they could better be called rags, snickers. Another, a short squat burly red faced and red haired sailor with a bushy beard and wearing striped blue and red pantaloons belly laughs. A swarthy older dark eyed and very thing sailor missing part of his hand, wheezes and laughs so hard he may be on the verge of tears. The burly red sailor snorts "Harrr, Cap'n let us be the judge of that!" Grabbing his own man boobs he shouts "Come on Cap'n, show us yer.."

The rest of his jest is cut off as three thundrous BOOMS shatter the air. Everyone jumps, and a fraction of a second later the ship is rocked as two loud crashes, explosions probably, shake the ship. The sound of shattered wood and metal reach your ears as you try to regain your balance, stunned and deafened from the crashes. Tavros more feels than hears something large, round and dark whistle by his head. The reeling crew stumble about and try to find the source of what just happened. With the setting sun and dusk, it is nearly impossible to make out anything, compounded with several lanterns and torches locally on deck, peering out to the dark sea is close to useless.

A voice from the crow's nest high above screams, "I see something behind us!"

Waiting on Lucina action yet.

Tavros casts his protective spell as the ships continue to move, the closest ship coming in fast and strong. Makoto slips up next to Tavros and turns him invisible. Teniel concentrates and summons up his image of harpies. They silently take to the air flying towards the first ship that is approaching fast as Miar shouts to the pilot to turn hard starboard hoping to cut in front of the approaching ship in a daring move as she scrambles to reach the wheel herself.

Pilot, profession sailor check DC 40: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

The ship, running at full speed, fails to make the turn at all as the pilot wrenches at the wheel, and ends up going somewhat in that direction however.

The crew scramble with the sails rigging. Alree An chants a spell and disappears. She touches Lucina on the shoulder, "I am right here."

The other ships move forward at their own rapid speed, keeping pace.

Teniel's illusionary harpies surround the first and nearest boat. He keeps them at some distance, hoping the sound of the wind and waves mask their lack of beating wings or other sounds. Bayangan makes his vocal sounds and hopefully it works.

Teniel, you won't be able to aid another with your peacock, as you both cast and moved, and are concentrating on the silent image, but I am also ignoring the 'action' of hurling your familiar into that air as just fluff. Also your figment needs to stay within 100' so he can't even really make it to the nearest boat, unless I am missing something that extends his range. The illusion can continue as its easily in range, but the source of the sound will not be precisely with the harpies, although the peacock could be west of the approaching ship and make it possibly somewhat believable as the sound may come from that general direction. I will use his perform check as a bluff probably. (at 20, not 22). It will take effect on Round 2 as the ship and its crew already did their actions by the time the harpies appeared.

Whoops! Yeah. I figured the familiar will stay with one of the harpy illusions. I can maintain the illusion in seven different cubes, so the familiar can hang out with one group of harpies that stay back while the rest don't sing. It's not a GOOD trick.

As for "throwing" Bayangan into the air, yeah, fluff. Peacocks are just comically bad at flight (clumsy) and also Bayangan normally lives on top of Teniel's head.

Tavros prepares invisibly for a fight as the enemy ship is closing in fast, maybe about 100-150' and getting closer now that your ship has turned to move diagonally away.

Their ship pushes close as Captain Miar grabs the helm from the pilot and cranks hard on the wheel starboard.

Profession Sailor: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (11) + 19 = 30

Since the ship is moving at full speed, even she has a hard time making it do a full turn, but a gradual turn is all she needs and the ship moves to a 90 degree direction from the pursuing ship, which tries to track and follow suit.

enemy pilot sailing: 1d20 ⇒ 11 +secret modifier

The pursuing ship fails the sharp turn also at full speed and manages a diagonal turn which actually brings it quite up close to the rear of your ship. Teniel concentrates hard to keep the illusionary harpies synched with the ships' movements, and his peacock struggles to flap, doing a slow turn about face to keep pace with the ships or risk falling out of range.

The enemy crew take cover from the harpies and although some seem to be lighting arrows on fire, most are covering their ears and a few fire crossbow rounds at the harpies. The dusk to darkness shadows makes it hard for Teniel to keep tabs on his illusions but as the ships close distance and the gap narrows he is able to bring his illusions closer. In addition the darkness allows some slippage in the detail required as the shadow can cover for any imperfections. Portions of the enemy crew seem to be human and their vision must be suffering as they attempt to discern the dark shapes wheeling about.

Makoto finishes her magic and Alree An moves away from Lucina, "I'm heading midships to cover and channel energy for any wounded."

Many of the crew race to the back of the ship as the enemy ship closes from behind, the gap between the ships now less than 30'. They load crossbows and prepare to cut any grapple lines.

Ship 2 pilot: 1d20 ⇒ 4 +pilot mods
Ship 3 pilot: 1d20 ⇒ 4 +pilot mods

The other two ships also had full speed turn poorly and keep pace, but are further away from yours and the first one.

Makoto stands quietly for a moment. A choice. The former, and perhaps better choice, was to simply hide herself from view as she had hidden Tavros. And while that would increase their chances of survival, it was likely best that she do what she can to protect the others, first. She places a hand on Miyu, who would undoubtedly be wading into the fight in short order, and sent some of their shared energy into his Muladhra Chakra.

His coat seems to thicken, his tribal markings taking on a glossy sheen, the red overlayed with with force energy slowly coruscating colors.

Miyu moves to a position to help defend the casters and healers from any threat of boarding. He doesn't go to the rear of the ship, however, occupying the middle distance. I can't access the map at the moment.

Lucina positions herself at the rear of the ship, ready to repel boarders although the ship is moving close, it is hard to tell if your ship can evade the other or if it will move close enough to allow grappling and boarding.

Tavros also stands ready mid-ship, keeping himself concealed under the magical shroud. He checks his javelins but doesn't hurl any....yet.

The enemy ship pulls closer. The pilot appears to move the ship close for grappling as it turns diagonally to come along side yours.

Pilot roll: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

Grapple check Ship CMD 18: 1d20 + 8 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 8 + 10 = 20

Despite several of the front grapplers being but magically asleep, two others hurl their grapples and the ships are grappled as the pilot shouts orders to the crew, slowing their speed to drag your ship to a halt.

Most of their crew hides or is taking shelter or covering their ears against the harpies as the ship cascades alongside yours. Many of your own crew looks about fearfully, not realizing that the harpies are illusions or that Teniel is responsible for them. Both sides hesitate as they wheel through the air menacingly.

Their captain is shouting orders and some of the crew fire at the harpies, although many are reloading or hiding. A person in robes at the rear of their ships steps up and casts a spell.

GM check DC 14: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Within the blink of an eye, Teniel's illusions are snuffed out as they appear to have been dispelled. The enemy caster snarls something to the crew.

Makoto invokes her magic on Miyu who moves mid ship to intercept what appears to be the enemies boarding your ship soon enough.

Teniel, irked that his illusions have been dispelled focuses on the impending boarding party. Choose a new action rather than concentrate. Bayangan flaps back to his vicinity now that the illusion is gone.

In the chaos Tavros hears Alree An's soft melodic voice next to him chanting more magical incantations. Your group feels bolstered however. Prayer effect in your group. +1's for you, -1's for the enemies.

You hear the captain back at the helm swearing like a sailor as her ship is grappled. She tries to maneuver the ship to break the grapples.

Pilot Roll DC 18: 1d20 + 8 - 4 + 19 ⇒ (19) + 8 - 4 + 19 = 42

The ship swerves away just enough that the tension on the grapples snaps the ropes and the hooks spring off tumbling to the deck or into the sea as the ropes whip back. Though the ships are broadside and have slowed somewhat, the brief grapple of the two ships has been removed. The boarding may still be imminent.

Your own crew fires at will into the enemy ranks with crossbows.

Light Crossbow attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 - miss
Light Crossbow attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 - hit

Light Crossbow attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11 - miss

light crossbow damage to enemy crew member: 1d8 ⇒ 2

Much of the crew is ready to fight the boarders, but a significant number must continue to help sail the ship. Both on your ship and the enemy ship much of the crew is involved in doing sailing things, above and below decks, although mostly above.

The remaining two enemy ships move closer, one of them coming up behind yours, and the other moving to the rear on your port side. Not quite on map yet

You can see the crew on these ships aiming crossbows and grapples as well.

Teniel motions and his summoned skeleton appears next to him. The grotesque undead startles the crew, who are already puzzled at their comrades who had just slumped over. The undead creature slashes out and claws one of the crewmen who screams in pain.

Teniel, mounts up on Pamburu and holds tight as the tiger's tail twitches and as Teniel spurs him to action, he feels the muscles tense and the tiger springs forward with a roar landing easily on the enemy deck where he savagely chomps down on the first pirate in reach, snagging the man by the neck and thrashing violently. You hear a snap and the man's body goes limp.

Lucina looks across the significant gap to the other ship. She considers vaulting over, but the deck and railing on the other ship are crowded with enemy combatants and thinks perhaps it is not such a good idea. She hunkers behind her shield and prepares to assault any who decide to bravely launch themselves to her side.

Tavros notes to the crew around him to move a bit. Some of them roll their eyes a bit startled but a few of them saw the minotaur disappear and make the connection between the voice and Makoto's magic.

To be continued..

Ok back

Round 4 continued

The enemies on the ship move to action, several of the crossbowmen at the front of the ship step back and reload their crossbows. The men who had attempted to grapple the ship see their attempts failed, and instead pull out billy clubs and hurl them down from the top of the upper deck towards the skeleton.

pirate #2 hurled club attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 - miss

club damage to skeleton: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

The rest of the pirates near the front are taking a nap or have been blasted into unconsciousness and are out. A large portion of the other pirates are working the sails to prevent them from being entangled from the proximity of your ship. Nearby a large brutish thugs stomps about snarling angrily and seeing Teniel grunts and thunders across the deck. The big fellow is shirtless, bald and covered in scars that would be more visible if he wasn't exceptionally hairy. In a sort of George the Animal Steele level of hairiness. He roars as he charges, lowering his shoulder, a knife in his teeth with a classic pirate look. It seems the knife is more utility, as he seems to be basically just body blocking Teniel.

Improved Bull Rush vs Teniel CMD 18: 1d20 + 19 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 19 - 1 = 28

Gets a little fuzzy here in terms of bull rush since Teniel is mounted, but he also has Raging Throw, so really he won't continue through Pamburu anyhow and just would rather knock Teniel into the skeleton.

Teniel goes flying from the back of Pamburu as the huge man bowls into him. He flies through the air and collides with the skeleton behind him and both slam into the wall behind them.

Both Teniel and the skeleton take 10 points of damage. (bludgeon in the case of the skeleton).

Next to the man a large grey-greenish woman, perhaps with orcish blood, steps up behind him and peers across the gap between the ships. She doesn't cross yet as the railings are full of defendants. She seems to be guarding their ship and waiting....

Whatever caster is up near the pilot's wheel moves down the steps a bit and launches another spell and a mass of sticky webs covers the rear of the ship, running from mast to wall to deck and catching and snagging on everything imaginable, making it hard to see and hard to move.
