Day 8 - Morning

You rise in the morning after a fitful and restless night. The storm subsided somewhere in the wee hours, and you were able to get a few hours of damp sleep. You take stock of the situation around the shelter and everything seems ok. Certainly the plant life nearby took some beating, but overall things seem as they might after a strong storm.

You dig some food out of your stores that you salvaged and brought here and make a meal as you start your day. Nothing menaced you through the night and you wonder how today will be.

"Yes, we should check on the turtles... and check on that ship." Maks says with a frown, before switching back into her furred form, and stretching languidly, before summoning Miyu once more.

"How stealthy is Miyu?" Teniel asks. "Could he scout the coastline for the ship or see if it's landed, while we make a circle of the beaches?"

And then, frowning, "And if the spellcaster last night didn't come from that ship, they might not have survived the storm, which means they might have landed to weather, not invade, and if we see a wreck we should be prepared to rescue survivors."

"And, third, storm might bring more ghouls inland. So be careful around any 'corpses.'"

Not quite 2 miles. Further, his hp drops to 8 while he's at that range, and if he dies, we lose him for the day. More than 100 feet is a pretty significant pain in the rear, as he drops to only 16 then. As she stated, he can't get very far from her, because she's not willing to risk that. Which in turn means that yes, Teniel is indeed the most stealthy, especially as he can move further than 100 feet from Maks without any penalties -and- has nearly twice the modifier that Miyu does :p

As his companions talk about leaving, Tavros stretching sore muscles from being cramped under a rock all night. He also loads up some of the more important of their possessions, such as their tools, to prevent them from being targeted. It would do him good to get some exercise from the added weight.

His light load is over 300lbs, and I'm pretty sure he's nowhere near that limit yet. Anything else anybody wants to particularly call out that we're taking with us?

The group assembles and loads up some possessions as a precautionary measure. You start your circuit around the island heading down north first to check on your visiting ship. You can see even before you reach the shores that the ship did not survive the night. It has run ashore and lays half capsized in the sand, its main mast snapped off halfway up. The bedraggled crew scurries about assessing the damage and working to make repairs.

Time for the rescue rangers! Guess who can magically repair snapped masts...

Teniel glances at his Vudrani primers, then looks for a rocky outcropping or ledge near the ship where he can stand and shout down and does so, leaving Pamburu out of sight and without seeing if the others follow too closely. (He does keep an eye out for invisible shimmers)

The imagery of that scene cracks me up. 'Look a tiny singing man with a bird on his head!'

Several of the bedraggled crew put down their tasks and move cautiously towards you. They do draw weapons, and one of the three has a crossbow out, and loaded. They look tired and suspicious, but appear to investigate in any event. The rest of the people on the shore pause what they are doing and watch their companions as they move up the shore towards Teniel.

The three men are probably 50' away. They appear armed, cautious, but not necessarily aggressive.

Makoto, assuming her islander form, moves forward to check their auras... there was a significant chance they would have none; most people didn't, and detect evil didn't register evil that didn't have enough willpower behind it... so it definitely wasn't foolproof... but she does check each of them.

Magang Bayangan is actually about Teniel's size—and his wingspan is much larger. Since he's imaginary, though, and Teniel's pretty strong, the peacock rides around on his head.

Teniel concentrates, trying to remember the right words. He picks up a twig, snaps it, and uses Mending to fix it. "Fixing spell. Make boats happy." He then points at the approaching Makoto, pantomimes touching him lightly on the forehead. "Translation spell. Makes talking happy."

Edit: Also, Teniel doesn't sing. The bird does. It's his personal, portable gamelan.

The approach cautiously, and stop about thirsty feet away. One of them asks questioningly "Nakoga?"

They seem to whisper among themselves and there is a mix of head shaking and head nodding.

Makoto perceives no evil auras in her cone.

There seems to be a mix of trepidation and confusion on their part. "Make boat? Talk magic?"

"Who girl?"

They have the crossbow trained on Makoto now, but the holder doesn't seem particularly trigger happy or anything.

I must say, I love Teniel's attempts to talk to the natives. :-)

Seeing his friends had the ship crew interactions in hand, Tavros smiles at the music. He's about to start a small jig when he remembers what bad things had gone on around the last shipwreck they had seen. Holding still, he scans the the ocean for any signs of incoming ghouls. He even moves closer to the shoreline to have a better look, making sure he should (hopefully) be able to intercept any charging undead before they reach his friends.

Note: By 'approaching the shoreline' I'm picturing him moving kind of parallel to where the ship crash is, so as to hopefully not spook the newcomers.

Ahaha thanks. I could just run everything through google translate, but instead I'm trying to give him a very limited and fixed vocabulary. He's a linguistics genius, but also he's only been studying this language for a few days, and clearly over-estimates his own ability to speak it.

The men seem to pause briefly. Then one of them in an 'Ah what the hell' sort of look and motion clasps Makoto's hand. The man is rather thin and wiry and has scraggly red hair and an equally scraggly thing beard. He seems to be missing a few teeth and has a long jagged scar down one cheek. Life has not been kind to the man. His weathered hand grips Makoto's as he lowers his blade. "I'm Klauen."

The other man stands to his flank a few feet, with short cropped dark hair and dark eyes and olive skin. The man with the crossbow has sandy hair and pale eyes and ruddy skin. They all wear loose fitting pantaloons and baggy linen shirts and boots to their shins.

"Excellent!" Teniel wheedles in rapid-fire. "I'm Teniel Memedi, traveling Dalang, and this is Makoto Kasumi, bard and painter. We are students of the Archmage Goodwin, and came to this island with several larger colleagues, though their larger size makes them more intimidating than the two of us. Obviously, this is a bit far-from-home for a Wayang and friends—but I speak a bit of Vudrani, and we've been sent here by a Marid who is concerned about pirates and looting in this archipelago. Apparently, too many turtle eggs have been taken from these beaches in the last few years, and if the trend continues, they may go extinct entirely, upsetting the local ocean and its water spirits."

"But this island is dangerous," he continues. "We've fought ghouls from the sea and fireballs from the sky. We are traveling heroes, yes, but we don't know your business, and figure you might want help getting your ship repaired—among us we know magic for healing both people and objects, and I am a skilled carpenter with experience rejoining broken wood."

Unless her friends give her a signal or tell her to come out she'll stay hidden and wait.

The man stares at Tenial, mouth hanging open a bit. "I see. Well, we are sailors, our ship normally for hire. Typically for trade, but our cap'n took on a mission recently we could hardly turn down, given the payout. A gnome hired us to take him out to this isle, and raid the turtle eggs you talk about. Nasty little creature he was. Didn't care about anything but his schemes, and never came out of his cabin except to glare at everyone. 'bout them eggs.... Well yes, we were told to go dig them up under the cover of darkness. Sorry bout that. Didn't know they were under protection. Just turtle eggs you know? Apparently worth a lot of money, I guess. We hauled a bunch in and he took them. Then we had the storm and the little bastard hasn't been seen since. At least he paid, but he left us in the lurch here and went off with his eggs. Not sure how he planned to carry them all being such a little guy, but they are gone. Part of me says good riddance. Got a bad vibe from him."

"Our cap'n, shes laid up in her quarters, took a spill in the storm, and went tail over tea kettle into the drink, and cracked her head on a rock. Our healer drowned in the storm. So the capn's on the mend the way normal folks do it I guess. She might come around in a day or two we hope. If you can heal and fix up our boat, we'd be appreciative. I can't speak for the everyone, but I am sure we'd give you a lift back to wherever. "

"Now, before we go getting too chummy, how do we know you aren't evil spirits or sirens or something looking to seduce us all to our deaths? Gotta be careful out here you know. No offense or anything, but you have to admit it all seems a little strange to us. "

The three still seem wary and off in the distance you can see some of the other sailors pausing occasionally to look over and keep an eye on things.

"Honestly... you don't. Any assurances we give would simply be platitudes that may well insult your intelligence. We have no way to show you currently that we intend to aid you, short of by giving aid. The question, then, is more of whether or not your people would rather suffer alone, or accept the aid of strange outsiders on the off chance that we can assist you." Maks says with a smile. Makoto waves towards the woods, motioning for the others to follow if they wanted to, as she follows after. Regardless, she connects the party with a message spell, so that if they're nearby they can continue to communicate. She keeps her spear with her but doesn't seem at all intent on using it. She somewhat expects a rather unique reaction to the combination of very civilized weaponry, and quite savage armor as she moves forward, unperturbed. As she begins to move forward, Miyu emerges from the woods and pads along fifty feet behind.

"It's rather true in the opposite form as well. We have to trust you in order to render aid. Some of the eggs belong to a very rare species... and the gnome that was with you radiated evil... making him a powerful dark magician." she says with a soft huff. "I suspect he commanded the weather that assailed us all, and wrecked your ship." she adds after a moment. "I'm certain we can come to mutually beneficial agreements until another ship comes across this island and your people can begin to leave, if they choose. If all of the people who are wounded can be gathered nearby to me, it will be significantly easier for me to heal everyone involved. I suspect there is a triage of some sort?"

"An intelligent species," Teniel corrects her. "Specifically, an intelligent, benevolent dragon that's been hiding its eggs along with the turtles on this island. If you don't know much about this gnome, there's a good chance he's involved in something very shady—he's either into dark alchemy, or selling baby dragons into slavery."

"Not to mention, a gnome wizard also lit half this island on fire and tried to murder us in our sleep last night, unprovoked, while laughing. I'm guessing he's more dangerous than you realize—he might have disappeared because he's found his own way off the island with magic, but if not, he's a danger to us all."

"Anyway," Teniel suddenly cheers up, "I'll go take a look at your mast, if that's okay! But I might need help lifting the pieces into place," and he whistles to Tavros, beckoning the big minotaur to come out slowly and help him with ship fixing.

Depending on whether we're using Ultimate Combat or S&S, a broken mast takes either 75 or 180 hp of healing. With Mending, Teniel can heal an average of 15 hp per hour, and his skill at carpentry means he likely knows exactly where to use it.

Tavros looks up from the ocean when he hears Teniel whistle. He smiles as he moves forward. "I have not yet seen any more ghouls. But that does not mean they will not show up later." He nods as Teniel explains what he wants done.

I have no idea how much a mast/partial mast would weigh, but it looks like Tavros can lift about 1040 lbs over his head. Although if the ship is still upright enough that he needs to climb part way up the mast to reattach the other part, that sounds significantly trickier.

Hmm... we'd meed the ship to either be upright (with Tavros balancing the mast) or horizontal (with it lying flat and held in place) while Teniel rejoins it. I've been googling masts, though, and I don't think they're usually more than 500 lb on a big ship)

Also, Lucina, the extra mending is super useful, that halves our repair time!

The group is lead to the ship. There is a healthy amount of skepticism and fear when Tavros gets closer, and initially people tend to just stay out of his way, but after the wounded are brought forth and healed by Makoto, the trust level grows.

Mending only affects an object of 1lb/level, thus you can only repair small items. To repair the mast will require good old fashioned carpentry.

The repair of the mast will require significant time and ingenuity. Their plan is to chop down some trees and build a scaffolding and through the use of other trees, and a lot of block and tackle pulleys, raise the original mast back into place after it has been fixed. Tavros will be able to help with raising the mast into place with his great strength. It will be several days out before they can complete repairs and have the scaffolding in place to raise it up. In the mean time, they crew gathers food and fresh water. Lucina's engineerng assists in the process and Teniel's carpentry skills lend solid aid in reworking damaged items, mending the smallest of the pieces if they can.

When Lucina asks if they will help recover the eggs, the captain who is conscious and healed (depending how much channeling Maks did ), advises she will try to help in return, although other than granting passage on her ship she isn't aware of any way to actively help. She says she will take you to the gnome's quarters to look for clues.

Maks would do her best to fully heal everyone. If there are just a few people with minor scrapes and the like after a channel (that they'll likely heal in a day or so), she'll stop there.

Up to 39 healing, in 2d6 increments: 14d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 6, 2, 4, 3, 1, 3, 1, 6, 1, 4, 1, 2) = 39
Man, that was a lousy roll. 10 below average.

After swiftly doing that, she would begin to make a bit of art, placing it in the crook of a tree to prepare herself to aid in whatever sort of work needed skilled hands that they didn't have someone helping with already.

Art Project: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
Any sort of crafting: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19

The first 2 channels/4d6 is enough to fix everyone up.

Plenty of help is needed gathering raw materials from the jungle, cutting down trees of all sizes for wood. It also occurs to you there is an entire other ship that could be scavenged.

Well Mending is no longer my favorite cantrip, dang, dunno how I missed that. Also not sure if the other ship has an intact mast.

Don't worry, once we get our psionic classes, Maks will be taking a level of Aegis. Standard Action: Heal an object for two hit points. :) Also, Prestidigitation is better than all other 0th spells, save maybe create water. :)

While working on what she could repair Lucina would talk to her group about their plans. "So we get these people safe, find the gnome, and take the eggs back to safety but then what are we going to become the eggs permanent guard?"

Nope, can't help here. But sea turtle eggs typically only take 1-2 months to hatch, so assuming these things were laid before we got here, it can't be too long—though dragon hatchlings we might need to protect.

Day 8 - all day

As everyone works together, the day passes on. Captain Miar thanks the group for the aid in repairing the ship and for healing her and the other wounded.

She asks at one point, (the sailor Klauen translating via share languages) "So I gather you are heroic adventurers of some sort, tasked with watching this island. What is your story? Why all the way out here?"

At one point, out of Tavros' earshot, "What's with the minotaur? Don't they, you know, eat people? How did you come by him? Don't get me wrong, his strength is invaluable in raising the mast. I've seen a lot of other races and creatures in my time, so for me, and many others here, its not any that outrageous. We judge everyone on their own merit, but clearly first impressions must be a b&*$@ for a group like yours."

"Of a sort. I prefer theater troupe, but we're a little understaffed." she says with a smile. "And mostly without an audience... or acts." she pauses to allow translation, "Though Teniel is assuredly our story teller. So, I will leave that to him."

Later

"Hmm. I've honestly never met a minotaur that did eat people. Well, not in my company, and several were amongst our brothers and sisters. Seems likely Teniel would mention the family. The first impression we had after leaving our home was rather... unfortunate. My allies managed to not kill most of the tribals, and we managed to communicate our intent. We only had one casualty, though I understand that other groups had much greater difficulty." she days, shaking her head, her communication punctuated by pauses that allows for translation. "It also helps to be able to change my form to suit my needs." She adds with a small smirk. "I prefer honesty... but I also prefer to allow people to be at ease in my presence. It's a difficult balancing act. I'm quite a bit more furry in my natural form."

"I've always imagined it was a religious thing," Teniel speculates wildly, "Though it might just be the sunlight. Minotaurs are—or were, millennia ago—the holy symbol of the demon lord Baphomet, and known in stories for running cannibalistic death cults deep underground. Tavros came from a surface clan, and they were less obsessed with consuming people than alcohol. Really, it just took a support group and some monastic scriptures, and now he's sworn off that, too."

Bluff (through comedy) because he actually has no idea: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28

"As for our story—it's one of the classic story archetypes. I'll spare you the long-form, but we were all raised by a wise old ancient powerful wizard, the Archmage Goodwin, who was super into multiculturalism. He tried to recruit and train heroic adventurers from every forgotten and maligned race, from minotaurs like Tavros to professional artists like Makoto, yadda bing yadda, kidnapped mentor, quest to retrieve him. While some of the others decided to search the immediate countryside, we elected for travel—we're trying to learn more about the world, by doing good deeds and learning the local culture and stories everywhere we go."

Create water is definitely my favorite cantrip. Even though I generally play classes that don't get it. :/

Also, many people eat cows, therefore it's only fair for Tavros' kind to eat some people. :-P I feel like there's a Greek story involving man-eating bulls or something.

Tavros seems content to let his family tell their stories. After all, it was relatively easy to talk and work at the same time. Working and doing an interpretive story dance, on the other hand... Last time he had tried, he had dropped a rather large beam of wood on his hoof. Although he supposed was better than crushing one of his itsy-bitsy sisters which is what would have happened if he hadn't moved quickly enough.
