Monster Mashup - Master Thread

Game Master CaveToad

Can you rescue your 'beloved' mentor from the forces of evil? Will you make your way in a world that may not trust you, understand you, or want you? Will you stay true to the path Goodwin set out for you, or revert back to your former life?

Hmm, that's a good point. Kinetic Fist doesn't attack with an Sp, though, so it's just an adder to unarmed damage.

Here's my new character application (Andrian Timeswift). I'd welcome any suggestions for improving the build or feats to take in the future. It's a little weaker than I'd like for level 1, but eventually I'll get the chance to get TWF up and running and a little armor and then things will be better.

@Milah: You get Weapon Focus as a bonus campaign feat. I'd consider swapping it out for either Double Slice or Deadly Agility (which gives you the Double Slice effect for free).

@Teniel: If you look at the advancement plan, I'm intending to get rid of that at level 4. I took it so I don't have to wait for Dazzling Display and the performance feats I want until after level 3.

As to Deadly Agility, I may take that at level 3 when I get dex to damage anyway from Rogue. It's worth +3 damage for half my attacks, which isn't too bad, but I'm still not sure if that's a payoff worth investing a feat over, compared to, say, Weapon Specialization, which is +2 damage to all attacks.

Alright, so I guess I'll be taking the bludgeoneer feat is what I'm getting from this discussion? :p Will try and post the character later today, it's mostly done :) just need to change from pyrokinesis to geokinesis (which was my prefered element anyway, just... seems a bit janky thematically when I've taken Pyromaniac trait and flame dancer bard archetype. Oh well, I'll take fire at 7th level and then he can punch people with magma! :p) and figure out how to format the character sheet.

Nonlethal magma, no less.

hmm is magma a physical blast? I'm not on my home computer at the moment so can't check :p but yes, rather an amusing visual

You can stay pyro! Treat your fists as though they were flaming; since the principal damage type is bludgeoning, I don't think you take a penalty (but you can't choose to make the physical damage nonlethal and the fire lethal, iirc)

Nah it's cool Dalang, like I said earth was my first choice for element anyway. Magma is in fact physical, but the damage is half fire half bludgeoning.

Anyway, here is Zachary! I hope I remembered everything, this was a complex build. Fun though :)

So, I noticed a few pages back that Cavetoad mentioned recruitment being continuously open with new players being cycled into new tables. Please correct me if I misunderstood what he was saying in that regard, but if that's the case, I'd love to get in on this.

I'll start by tossing out some stats under the assumption that it's okay if I join. (No hard feelings if I can't or if you've got too many people already, though!)

Yes, we are always open :)

The issue is not that the ability may be treated as a weapon by feats... it's that the ability is not a weapon except in terms of feats. What this means is that you have no legal way to call for nonlethal damage, as spells and SLAs cannot take a -4 to hit to change the attack into a nonlethal attack. Bludgeoner lets you do it for free if you can at all, but nothing lets you do it. Except maybe your DM. Had to find it:

Hey Mark, Merciful Foliage allows kineticist blasts to deal nonlethal damage without a penalty to attack rolls, is this (currently) the only way to deal nonlethal damage with a blast ?

Or if you take the attack penalty can you use any blast to deal nonlethal ?

Typically spells and SLAs don't allow that attack penalty, and with the wild and unrestrained nature of elemental energy, I think it's sort of fitting. That said, I'm sure it'd be fine to allow it anyway in a home game for ones that make more sense to allow nonlethal (basically the physical blasts).

I'll keep updated on this discussion, I haven't time to review it myself and I am not super up to date on all the occult stuff, so its good to have this here. It's good to have the developer notes/opinions on it.

Milah and Zachary added to the waiting list.

Hooray! :)

Hello, I'm Jereru.

I've been working on this Monk(UC)/Paladin/Rogue(UC, Swashbuckler). Now I'm transcribing all the info to the alias's page.

I've got one question, which is unimportant as for now but just to try plan my future:

UCMonk allows you to take QingGong powers, and one of those powers is Power Attack as a feat (costing Ki).

QingGong wrote:
These ki powers duplicate the effects of specific feats. A monk does not need to qualify for a feat to select it as a ki power. For example, a qinggong monk can select Spring Attack as a ki power even if she doesn’t meet the prerequisites for selecting Spring Attack as a feat. Activating one of these ki powers is a free action on the monk’s turn; until the start of her next turn, the monk is treated as if she had that feat. Some of these ki powers that duplicate feats may also be activated as an immediate action; these powers are noted in the ki powers list.

Given this, would taking Power Attack as a QingGong power qualify for other feats with Power Attack as a prerequisite (such as Cleave, etc.)?

Thank you.

I've never seen anything that suggests Qinggong powers count as actual feats, just "duplicate their effects." But also, Power Attack is one you'd probably want to have...

I have Piranha Strike, but if I can simulate having Power Attack, I might think about upgrading Jabbing Style in the future.

My first thought was the same as yours, but then asking was worth the try, wasn't it? ;)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Hello Jereru, welcome.

To answer your question, no it doesn't qualify.

Looks like i got 16, 16, 12, 14, 15, 15.
Going to fiddle around with a few ideas to see what I can make.

No problem, CT, I thought so, just some people have strange rulings sometimes and I thought asking was free.

Why, oh, why isn't there a feat to get Extra Ki Powers? :(

On the matter at hand, I have a small break from work so I'll put in more things in the profile. Have a look if you wish and tell me if the format is ok.

Meet Yvhul'ku, LAB rat's submission! I'm still working on his history, but everything else seems fairly set at the moment. CaveToad's template portion is at the top under a spoiler. The rest is more for my own sake, to keep all the stats and whatnot straight. Feel free to hit me with any thoughts or feedback you may have on reading through it!

I loved the Amulet of Mediocre Fists :D

Looks a rather dangerous guy to mess with, I hope I'll have the pleasure to be on your side :)

Indeed. It's much nicer to still have one's brain.

I think I'm done :)

For all the new recruits and people submitting crunches, when i review your sheets I go through a checklist, and most of the time people miss the same things. I will put the checklist here and probably in the campaign tab for reference. Before I review the next batch of people waiting, please look a the checklist and adjust your crunch to complete and missing information. Hey CaveToad, just a few quick questions for you now that I've picked through my crunch and whatnot. Still working on the history atm, so no rush to peruse my stuff.

1) You have the Signature Items giving another feat at every even level. Which is in addition to the free feats that we get at every even level? Or is this the source of the feats at every even level?

2) Does this stack with the 3rd/6th/7th feat from the specific set of feats (Weapon Focus, Spell Focus, ect.)? Meaning we'd get three free feats at level 6?

3) Can you expand on the auto-Leadership at level 7?

4) How do you feel about us taking Monster Feats?

1) You get double on even levels.
2) And tripple on 6
3) Still a few levels away :p. But it would be nice to know.
4) As I said on the previous page this was already answered earlier in the thread. Yes, we can.

@Xanya: Awesome! Thanks so much for the quick answer. Digging through more than 40 pages of info makes it hard to find some of these things, but I noticed they weren't clarified on the Campaign Info page, so I figured I'd ask.

Yes, Xanya is correct.

In terms of Leadership, yes it is getting close to7th for some of you, the leadership will come via a storyline aspect that I have planned, and if the circumstances are right you get it free, it won't just magically happen though.

Might I suggest someone go digging through the 40 pages of thread, consolidate the rules, FAQ's, etc. and put them in a google doc that CT can link to the main page or can be frequently referenced by anyone visiting the boards?

Why bother at this point? All tables are currently filled up and there are several reserves in case something should open up.

I myself have put most of my rulings on things that are relevant to everyone on the FAQ on the main campaign tab. I don't think anyone needs to go digging.

Yeah, I think it was clear enough (and now's when I screw it somewhere :P).

Okay I think I have everything on the checklist now apart from a few items in the Misc section. A couple of the below I'd like feedback on, the others are just a reminder/to-do list for myself.

Misc - Character description, backstory, personality, goals
I always suck at this one, takes me forever to write up something like this :p I'll get to it though.

Misc - Mini Crunch in character stat fields
Is there an example/template for what you want? by stat fields I assume you mean so that it appears under the Alias' name?

Misc - Age, Size, misc features filled in
Not really sure what are appropriate age, size, etc for an ogre :p

Misc - Appropriate Theme listed
Working on this now.

My character should be okay for the checklist. I think I got everything. Basically, I just took my character sheet from Mlinzi and modified it to fit this character, so everything should be good... I hope...

Just remembered the other thing I wanted to ask you! Would you be willing to allow Enlarge Person to affect Yvhul? Given that there's maybe one or two races we have access to for this campaign that are actually humanoid, I figure I'm not too out of line in asking.

Also, would Monastic Legacy let me pump my unarmed strike damage up to ludicrous levels because gestalt?

For future use, just in case.:

5d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 4, 6, 2) = 18 14
5d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 2, 2, 3) = 14 10
5d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 4, 5, 5) = 22 15
5d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 3, 1, 6) = 17 15
5d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 3, 3, 6) = 21 15
5d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 5, 6, 1) = 19 15
5d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 3, 5, 6) = 21 15
Wow...

I haven't required massive character backstories, given that its half written for you, but obviously the more you have the easier it is to RP and get into character.

Just check out the various tables, most people have a mini stat block in their header for posts. mainly up to date AC, saves, perception etc are the most important to I can check them easily in combat without having to open another tab.

A typical adult ogre stands 10 feet tall and weighs roughly 650 pounds.
Age is probably similar to humans but i guess perhaps mature a little faster.

Enlarge Person only works on humanoids. Quite a few of the races are still of the humanoid type (Note that Monstrous Humanoid doesn't qualify). There are plenty of other size changing powers that are not type restricted, they are just harder to get or come later usually.

Re Monastic Legacy, No, you don't add your other classes for that, that would be silly. Basically think of your class as 'Gestalt' with the other classes as part of the gestalt. Monastic legacy is for multiclassing. So if you stopped your monk progression (assuming it wasn't your favored class, and after 4th per the rules) you would use monastic legacy in combination with your monk/whatever class in the same 'column' of advancement within the gestalt.

Alright thanks for the feedback, I do have some ideas for life before Goodwin found him, so should be able to knock it out once I get started. So does 16 sound reasonable for when he was picked up by Goodwin then?

Seeing I PM'd you my crunch, for Yraazhin, would you like me to reformat it with any missing information and PM the whole thing again, or just PM missing information to you?

Illia, the best would be to have a profile with the crunch in it, that is easier than having the crunch emailed. That way it is up to date. You don't have to worry about not getting in, after your character is approved, its just a matter of when.

Chejop is sad 'cause he's not "waiting for a new table" :( :P

All right, it looks like I have everything all set for Yvhul. Let me know if there is anything I missed, of course, but it all should be fairly set at this point. The only thing left to do is lock down what feats I'll be taking at much higher levels, but I doubt you're too concerned with anything that far down the road.

5d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 3, 5, 6) = 21
5d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 4, 5, 5) = 16
5d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 4, 2, 4) = 19
5d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 1, 4, 4) = 16
5d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 3, 2, 2) = 12
5d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 6, 2, 6) = 21
5d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 6, 5, 1) = 23

18,17,13,13,14,15

So you just roll and then add ten after you move some of the numbers about right?

Is any other 3rd party on the d20 site allowed like 3rd party archetypes or feats?

edit:

so I distribute the 10 free points and end up with

18,18,14,14,18,18

Am I right?

Just stuff from path of war.

Okay, we start at level 1?

No way to know now since there are no open slots.

Lol oh okay, nevermind then.

Though there are nearly enough people for a new table, so CT might make another one if even more people make characters. I'm not sure about that though.
