Mists of War - DM Downrightamazed

Game Master downrightamazed

Three groups of gaijin approach the Son of the Heavens, ruler of the Empire of Mists, in his palace in far Lanzhu. A great war is underway in the west, this is known, but what could these strangers want?

Anyway, can you finish your Power Word sorc build that you talked about earlier? Sorry to go back and forth on this, and I appreciate your patience. In the end I'm gonna add Squeeks to The Seer's Journey. Narratively it's just too perfect.

I like your idea though, and your enthusiasm and writing style are infectious. You're easily one of my top picks right now for the game starting in Empire of Mists. Can you finish that build and make a profile? I know you've been posting stuff all over, I'd just like to see a solid, finished build in one place. This party currently needs a strong arcanist. Right now they have a strong divine caster, a samurai, and a ninja, so a powerful sorc with techniques from decades ago that have been forgotten (i.e. Power Word) would be cool.

Also, I really want to see someone play the Power Word class, or archetype, or whatever it is. :-)

I'll get right on that. Does it matter terribly if he doesn't have his gear yet?

HP!
1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
1d12 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14

Wow. I have over 60 HP! As a Sorc, that's pretty excellent.

Quick question: The Black Dragonflight. Are they just black dragons? Because I think I'm going to give him the White dragon bloodline. Honestly, it has little to do with the character, I just wanted to know for my own curiosity.

Further Notes:
Part of the plan is that he's literally the direct descendant of a white dragon, hence the potency of his blood. Also, I've decided that his sister is a full elf, while my character is a half-breed, so she'll be especially shocked to find her brother totally unchanged after all this time.

To further impress the age and scarcity of Power Words, I'm going to suggest that he's been asleep for a century or so (what with knowledge-hoarding, that's long enough for civilisation to forget all about it), but that for some (handwaved) reason, he hasn't aged a day. Perhaps its the dragon blood in his veins, perhaps a side-effect of his 'eternal' slumber, but either way, he hasn't aged since he fell asleep.

I believe I have all of my offensive abilities down. I was wondering since you told us to ask. I was thinking of using my remaining gold to pick up a Vest of Escape(Cost: 5,200GP juuuust shy of the 5k limit xD), I was however wondering. If I am allowed to have it would its Disable Device bonus(+4) stack with the bonus provided from the goggles of minute seeing(+5)? I'd likely still want the vest regardless due to the Escape Artist Bonus and the fact that the vest is just all around awesome.

Edit:

Wow, still haven't done HP

1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
1d10 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
1d10 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

And with the starting 10 I have a grand total of 45, lol the Sorccerer has more HP than me. That's hilarious XD! Good think I'm the guy who will be shooting dudes from the sky or range xD!

my ronin has 74 HP, and her younger sister can actually take a hit or few.

Alrighty. I don't intend to be presumptuous, but it seems like you won't affirm a place without having more to go on. Here's a brief intro that should get you a glimpse of my Shoto idea:

The Shoto family in the Empire of Mists is a large and wealthy clan. They surround themselves with mystery and secrets, and employ shrewd judgment and clever forethought in business and military dealings. Though some view the Shoto with suspicion and even accusations of dishonor, it is difficult to deny their acumen, and their friendship and loyalty is defended by many as reliable and genuine. It is said that a Shoto is the best friend and worst enemy you can have in the Empire.

Among the young lords of this infamous people is Shoto Imuri. Imuri practices with every weapon available to one of the samurai caste: martial weapons, battlefield tactics, courtly intrigue, seduction and poison are arts he pursues at the demand of his ruthless, but proud sensei. At his gempukku, he was hailed as the top student of the Broken Promise dojo. His reputation is marked by occasional controversy, being the son of celebrities. His mother is a well-known butei actress, and his father a feared duelist and respected shogi player.

The rigors of the three Shoto family dojos are well-known, and it is tradition that the graduates of these schools send one year in pilgrimage to assert themselves in an Empire that will judge them based on future success and adherence (or lack thereof) to honorable conduct. Imuri travels on errands for his parents and dojo, seeking to solidify an identity and reputation. He can choose any path - honorable businessman, respected shireikan, or ignoble assassin. In the coming year, he will set firmly upon the road to adulthood and work to intertwine both his legacy and destiny.

I'll work that build right now and add him in. Hopefully you dig the concept s far.

How does young Imuri view foreigners?
How does he feel about mages?
What is his clan's stance on the current Emporer's frequent dealings with traders and scholars from the west?
When exploring, how would he pass the time?
A monster attacks your party, a leader has never been decided on for combat situations. Does Imuri take charge, or just start fighting on his own and hope others join him? Why?

Spoiler:
1. While many in the Empire view foreigners with zealous xenophobia, the Shoto are known to trade with anyone. This does not mean they view those outside the celestial order as equals. If all humans are the same from birth, it must surely be that foreigners are a step below Imuri's people in the karmic wheel. Ergo, they can embrace Imuri's way of doing things, or they can risk becoming the object of his lower skills. Above all things, victory and increase are Imuri's priorities. Whether someone prevails on his soul to place humanity in general higher than the needs of his family remains to be seen.

I will say that Imuri will die leading his family to war against outsiders if they choose to become antagonists. As a believer in reincarnation, principle is significantly more impotant than life or death.

2. Loosely stealing from Rokugan, I think Imuri trust priests, though he takes and leave bushido and the Tao as is necessary to accomplish his purposes. The role of his family in society is the only religion he really needs. Usefulness will earn his trust quickly, faithfulness to principle will earn his friendship, even if the moral behavior of the two are radically different.

Arcane casters I prefer to not have much experience with. If the Empire has significant quantities of both, then he will likely view arcane magic as another tool. Use it for the good (meaning benefit) of the Empire or the Shoto family, and it is acceptible. But unacceptible risks must be eliminated swiftly. There's few things a Shotot won't do, at least not early in life. But to embrace maho or violate the karmic order is not acceptible ever.

3. Imuri is willing to learn and trade with foreigners, but views them as the descendants of barbarians. Wearing leather and eating animals with cloven hooves bothers him. He understans he has his ways, and they have there's, but of course, the ways of the Shoto are enlightened, unique and better.

4. The Broken Promise dojo teaches low and high skills. Every day, he practices kata and meditates on each. During restful periods, he plays a very aggressive, mean game of shogi. He plays the biwa and appreciates arts and beauty. He will honorably entertain geisha, and views them as great company. He is very friendly, since his emoptions are not complicated by guilt or regret. However, like many Shoto, that smile might be genuine, or that laugh might hide his intention to kill you in your sleep. I like the idea that he does not fully know how he will conduct himself, but I lean towards the versatile killer and liar. As I wrote, great friend, unfathomable enemy.

5. Shoto Imuri is a lord, born to wealthy and well-known parents. There is very little reason to discuss matters of leadership. He will assume that mantle by subtle example, but also by siezing command if necessary. He acts quickly and decisively. Victory is more important than protecting the feelings of those who have to be told to join the action.

In combat, he relishes all dynamics. He will engage in irritating banter before an otherwise honorable public duel, he will attack a weak point of an engagement and maintain presence on the front lines,, or he will sneak outside conventional combat and strike from the shadows. A samurai fights with amny weapons. A samurai who chooses not to fight with one is weak.

I would very much like to see gear. You have an awful lot of money to spend, so gear can really add to your build. That 5k max gp per single item goes a decent ways toward sweet toys.

5200 is fine.

Pretty sure those bonuses won't stack. They usually don't. Check to see if both bonuses are of the same type, i.e. insight or luck. If they are, then they don't stack. If not, then I suppose it must be legit.

Lacking a reference to a dice bot (do people still use invisible castle?), I rolled dice:

4d6 = 11 Con (+1 @ lvl4 = 12)
4d6 = 14 Int
d10+6 = 15 Str
d10+6 = 12 Wis
d3 (2=1)+15 = 16 Cha
d3 (5=3)+15 = 18 Dex (+2 human = 20)

Hit Points: 10+2+10+5+3+2+6 = 38? Yeesh.

Samurai 4 Ninja 2

Favored class: ninja. probably 2 hp, now.

Actual CS coming soon....

I have skimmified a bit of both games, but I plan to digest more later. Details, RP flavor, good writing from your players - it looks good to me so far.

Okay, the build is here in the profile. I just need to add his Power Words and gear, which I'll do when I get home from work in about three hours.

I'm not looking for plot-spoilers, but would being the son of a black or white dragon come up more often in the plot? Because I'd like some (however slight) plot relevance there.

MORE Notes!:
Also, if you ever need to contact me, my regular email address is marcaes[at]gmail[dot]com.

I'm really hoping this works out - I'm massively stoked to play this character now!

Profile has been updated to reflect Cleric of Shelyn.

Steven, the dice on the site work as follows [ dice] 1d20 +4 [ /dice]
Just take the space out after each initial bracket.

If you look under the box you type in for each message, you will see the BBCodes button that will show you all you need to now for shortcts on the site.

Evidently the Vest and Goggles both provide a competence bonus so it looks like I'll just be getting the vest for it's Escape Artist Bonus. Which is still pretty great and as the vest is made of silk I could likely wear it at a social function without drawing the unneeded attention that goggles would bring xD

I shall update my stuff with with Vest stats now!

Hehe... i'd originally written up a whole thing where I would ask everyone if they knew of Poison use being a feat in any book when i came to the sudden realization... Daveth is immune to poison XD!

hehehe

Thank you, Nagano-chan. I had not realized they'd added a dice bot.

Shall I redo the dice or keep as is, sama?

i noticed a few errors in Shoto's profile.

i noticed hints of a previous character eating up that alias, lingering remnants that may need to be cleaned up

but i beleive that we should Ditch the whole XP thing and do the levels by chapter. or even a similar form of milestone.

Not...necessarily. As a summoned warrior from the shadow plane you would have been treated largely with disdain, and then eventually grudging respect but only if you did your job well. You would know about the general makeup of the army, this is true, but you would never have heard Veriala's name.

You would NOT know about the dragonriders, either. Everything else is fair game.

Steven:
You're a frontrunner, for sure. Your writing is snappy and your pedigree as a gamer is impeccable, of course. :-) I do need to see the full build, though. This afternoon or evening is quite fine. I'm working in the studio all day and night so I'll be on the boards off and on the whole time.

Also, one thing I should warn you about, you probably know a great deal more about Asian culture and history and traditions than I do. I will be taking GREAT liberties with all of those things, keeping the overall vibe and a (probably very typical) westerner's take on manners and etiquette and codes and loyalty etc. etc. So while I do my best to not just make up crazy otaku nonsense, if you're seeking a high degree of verisimilitude, this won't be that game. Just want to give you fair warning, and of course I'll understand if this diminishes or extinguishes your interest.

Essentially, I try to treat everything in my world with care and respect, whether it's totally made-up and not possible in any kind of reality (that is why it's called "fantasy" gaming, yeah?), or if it's based, however loosely, on something IRL. This courtesy will extend to my inclusion of eastern themes, just, like I said, I'd always rather go with made-up stuff than copy text out of a history book. That's simply my preference. :-)

Also, w/r/t your attribute and HP rolls, you can reroll here on the boards if you want. It's your call. Makes no difference to me.

You know that's an interesting question. I guess, when I think about it, in the bajillion twisted plots in the stories based in The Land, being a son of a Metallic, Red, or Blue dragon would actually come up with greater frequency. The whites rarely leave their arctic stronghold, and are mostly engaged in defending it from Black Dragonflight incursions. No honor among thieves, that sort of thing. Being descended from a black dragon could add some juicy bits, but they'd be (pardon the pun) all black and white; all free people fear and despise the black dragons, while the dark races and the beloved of Lamashtu worship them, there's not much emotional interest or moral tug-of-war there.

The metallic dragons, however, have a million things going on, are all banded together against the enemy, and it's possible you will meet not only your parent, but friends of said parent. They're working together from all possible angles to defeat the enemy, you see, so they're very busy and traveling a lot.

I'm planning on announcing the final roster tonight. I'm 100% sure on a couple spots, kinda sure on a couple more, and waiting on stuff from Steven and ChibiAmy yet to help me decide, though I'm pretty solid on everyone else's build. Thanks for checking in!

Pose:
Wind. There is always wind. The simplest breeze, to the breath of the beating of a butterflies wings, to the howling gales that sometimes swallowed the highest mountain peaks - there was always wind.

Shan Chongde stood on the hill, staring down over the village that lay in the valley below - it's tiered farming plots, the river that meandered through it, the trees and the roads. There was movement, people reaping the rewards of a planting season, working through the rice patties, harvesting vegetables, fruits, and even herding cattle.

From afar, it seemed like a simple village.

Turning to look over her shoulder, the wind, again, rose and started flapping the cloak that Chongde wore, flowing to the pinion secured on the mount behind her. It also fluttered the fine robes of the Mystic which she was sent to guard, gold and red silks fluttering, though the woman seemed not to even notice. "This is the village, Mistress?" Chongde asked.

The Mystic, Chongde's distant cousin and a formidable woman by the name of Xian-Xia simply nodded. "It is. I can feel the taint even from here," she whispers as she peered foward with blind eyes. "Inhale, and on the wind... tell me what you smell."

A half-bow was given to the woman, who was of a higher station than herself, and Chongde turned back to the village. Closing her eyes, a deep breath was pulled in through her nose, before it twitched, wrinkling. "It smells ... sweet ... but wrong."

"Sweet like rotting flesh," noted Xian-Xia.

That caused Chongde's eyes to open and the woman to frown down at the village. "Is there no hope for any one? The women, the children?" was whispered in dread.

Xian-Xia did not answer for a long time. "No. The void has taken seed in all of those souls. We must do the work of the Sun now, of the Wind, of the Flame, of the Ice, of fire of cold. We do the work of the Ancestors to purge this village clean. Perhaps in five or six generations, a new village can begin again here."

The Mystic shifted on her mount slightly, ready to ride down the hill. "The artifact is here. We must burn the village, make certain none of the villagers leave, and return the artifact to the temple to be purged, Little Dragon," noted the woman with a tone of affection for the young Samurai.

Swallowing, Chongde steeled herself for what must be done, exhaling a deep sigh. "Yes, Great Sister," she noted in reply with a bow.

The rest of the night, the air was cold, the wind fell still, and only the sounds of battlecries and dreath filled the air.

In the end, only two figures left the fires of the tainted village, both covered with blood, and both heading to return to the Temple of the Mountain Wind with a jade box tucked in the Mystic's lap.

Edit: I decided the past-scene was too long to just leave open, so put it in a <spoiler> tag. Anyone is welcome to read it.

Changed background a little and changed one of my feats so it now fits the background better.

Shadow Lodge

So if I chose a metallic dragon (Brass, Bronze, Copper, Gold, or Silver) to be my bloodline, it'd see more play? I think I like the black dragon thing - and the black and white response he'd get...

Just cool stuff:

Random monster sees his black scales and watches him hurl acid magic around: "Master, master!" The creature drops to its knees, groveling before him. "No more, no more! We did not know these people were your servants!"

Random person sees the same thing: "A black dragon!" She gasped, fear in her eyes. "Everyone, run! Before it kills us all!"

Bwahaha, that would be awesome! Okay, black dragon bloodline it is. Especially if I get a "Join ussss, my son." moment. THAT would be really, really cool.

And thanks for choosing me! I'm taking part in a M:tG tournament today, but I'll definitely have the gear complete and ready for you to look at by weekend's end.

First things first; I want to thank everyone who submitted builds and went through all this. I really really appreciate all your time. If I didn't pick you, please don't take it personally. I have a pretty wide set of metrics players have to succeed in, and I had some really terrific options here.

Okay! So as usual I'm choosing more than I thought I would 'cos of all the coolness going on here, but I still have ONE SPOT LEFT I'm considering folks for. Waiting for that last build (Steven, where you at, man?) before I finalize.

In the meantime, I've made some decisions. The following people can report to the OOC thread whenever they have a moment. Chat with your fellow players, get to know each other, etc. Game will start Monday. Please post any new questions you have for me in that thread going forward.

(Looks like the boards freaked out or something and added my OOC thread three times. Heh. Two of 'em are blank, so obviously use the one I linked above, the one with content in it.)

These players have been selected:
Meowzebub as Tokine Nagano, Cleric of Shelyn
Psionic Fox as Kyras Erodel, Power Word Sorcerer
Zain Ashvale as Daveth Ashvale, Half-Erinyes Rogue
ChibiAmy as Shan Chongde, Magus

I apologize. I had an epically bad personal and business day yesterday. I am back on the plan, no one is dead (that doesn't need to be). Full build coming as you read this.

Ouch, man, I hope everything is okay...?

Other than that, coolness! I'm running an IRL game tonight but will keep checking in.

Heya - would it be acceptible for the Martial Stalker feat from 3.5 to apply to samurai and ninja classes, given our setting? I don't need the AC bonus, since the PFRPG ninja doesn't have that feature. I am just looking for samurai and ninja to cooperate better, and I'd like to spend a feat to make it worthwhile. I ask because I think I saw a few backwards compatible mechanics on other builds. I'm happy to choose something else if you require.

This is cool, go for it!

Edit: I'm willing to forever give up the mount feature (there's talk in the playtest about making the mount optional) for either the Ancestral Relic feat (a benefit of previous samurai classes and not unlike the divine bond alternative), or for the following text for Martial Stalker for your campaign only:

Martial Stalker Your samurai and ninja levels stack for the purpose of determining the size of your ki pool. Your samurai and ninja levels also stack for the purpose of qualifying for feats that require a minimum fighter level feat.

I'll throw out both mount and mounted archery for both abilities, if it pleases you. : }

Finally, I am interested in creating a Shoto order, but that won't largely impact the build for a couple of levels. If that doesn't annoy you, there's plenty of time to consider it and approve or veto decisions. For the first level, I'd probably ask for these changes:

Edict: I must seek the advantage of the Shoto in every situation. I may empoy dishonorable behavior for the good of the clan or Empire, but I may not be disloyal to the family in any event. I may be cheerful and altruistic personally, but must place the needs of the Shoto first in all things.

Challenge: Gain a +1 bonus to CMD against the object of my challenge. Increases again at 4, 8, 12, 16, 20.

Add Stealth and Knowledge (nobility) to my class skills. These are already class skills for ninja, but for completeness sake this represents the Shoto use of low skills and political acumen. I would get a small bonus on the skills, so that's cool.

I'd replace the 2nd level samurai order ability with:

Strike with no thought Allows me to reroll my Initiative check once per day, and an additional time at 6, 10, 14, 18.

If you want to disciss these or would like to see development of the higher level abilities, I'll be back on the thread. Off to study magic items, which I don't imagine will take long.

Sorry - Dinner interrupted the edited post and I had to finish my request. Tell me what you think and I''ll finish that build before bed.

I think that's cool, go ahead with that. I'm down with swapping things out for cool builds.

I'm all for dropping the mount for ancestral relic. Cyra wanted me to say this since she can't get to a computer at the moment.
