Attack of Opportunity (bite) 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26

As the golem pulls him backwards - despite his strength and size - Kyras growls in frustration. He lunges forward, closing the small gap between him and the golem, and slams his teeth into the stone guardian. As with all he does, it is reckless and unexpected. Off-balance from the bite that takes a chunk of stone off its neck area, the stone golem cannot hold on when Kyras pushes off. With the stone grip lessened, Kyras growls to Wei, "Not. Necessary."

Kyras steps back and away from the door, giving Azami and Wei the chance to close it. He slashes with his claws and maw, only to have no success compared to moments before. Each attack bounces off too-thick stone without seeming to have any effect. He steels himself for more devastating hits from the golem, knowing that he simply has to buy time. He eyes his discarded sword, clattering between the feet of the golems. It's pretty unlikely that he will get it back, though his draconic claws and maw are doing well for now.

The conflicting combination of having her ribs cracked moments before feeling Tokine's healing wash over her would make her retch if the wind had not already been knocked out of her from the punch.

Azami glances to Wei, then notices Kyras throw off the golem's grasp; she gives the monk a small shrug, and turns her full attention onto the elemental in front of her. Both hands firming on her katana, Azami slashes twice, taking advantage of the elemental's fall. It crumbles apart over the ground, the path to the door no longer barred by anything but rubble.

Envoy-6 moves with lightning, liquid speed over to where the Loyal Shadow is preparing to defend himself against the looming earth elemental. The spritely metalclad warrior seems to draw particular ire from the stony giant; it completely forgets about Chu and directs its two massive blows against the Envoy, but it is too slow and clumsy to land any hits on the shining creature.

"Imperial Advisor!" the Envoy gurgles in that strange voice that seems to issue from its chest, "We must get that door open! We must get out! These are only the primary defenses, we cannot tarry here!"

The tea house remains quiet for several seconds while Shoto Imuri surveys his surroundings. The frightened serving girls, the lack of other guests, this invitation to conduct business elsewhere. The Weathered Waveman sits and adopts a haggard smile.

You have seized control of the tea house and even now are poised to take action if I frustrate our arranged terms. Fear not, the Scarecrow will be delivered to you unharmed. I require only the safe return of the beautiful Sera, who will have little choice but to accept an offer of marriage from my house. My family receives the favor it intends, our houses cease being rivals for a few months while we determine where the Shoto stand in the conflict brought to our land, and you enjoy the safe return of one of your valued conspirators, with no interference from the house most able to disrupt your industry.

Imuri places the black silk bag in front of him and pauses while the serving girl brings tea. He then holds his cup in his hands to warm aching fingers. If you agree simply as you did last night, simply deliver the girl in question, unharmed, to the gossamer palace. Once I receive word that she is safe and her identity is confirmed, I will offer an unharmed Scarecrow to you. A simple and honorable exchange. If we can agree on this easily enough, we should improve our relationship with another exchange.

Imuri intends to keep this exchange as brief and simple as possible, but he doesn't want to appear in a hurry, as that might inspire the Pink Man to alter the deal. Also, he wants to test the Pink Man's willingness to entertain other offers and see if he buys Imuri's positioning that rescuing the Sera is about arranging a marriage to his benefit. This might take more than a few seconds, so I'm willing to spend another hero point (+4) to improve my chances at an easy exchange.

With the tumblers finally releasing the door, Chu turned to face his assailant. He spread his hands wide as his claws began to lengthen, hissing loudly at the elemental that had been battering him for the last minute before being rudely interrupted by something else, again. When it proved to be the Enovy Chu too its words in stride and was at a loss for a snarky comment about what he had been doing the entire time they had been in the room. Thinking better of it he nodded and turned away from the distracted elemental.

"Keep that off me and I will get the door..." Chu moved towards the door, dripping blood as he went, but ignoring his wounds for now as he focused purely on getting the massive door open and the others to safety. He ignored the nagging feeling of what may lay in wait on the other side, knowing that it was better then staying here to be slaughtered in this deathtrap.

Kyras is up.

Azami Only:
This is a result from your P(Soldier) check earlier: It occurs to you that when Naradil and Gwen came out from the undercity, they mentioned that they got separated from each other, and then their defeat was swift. You realize that staying together is of utmost importance, and each of the forces you're currently fighting are not only very capable of separating you from each other; they're working very hard at it.

You also see something that makes your blood run cold; the head of one of the stone golems, back some 50' in the shadows of the hall, has your family's crest stamped on the head. You recognize it instantly as your father's old Seal of Ownership.

@Imuri: "Marriage! Well. You are as brave as you are industrious, young Shoto." the pink-haired man is smiling a bit, and it seems to you he means it. "Now. Do you know how old I am? Don't worry, it's a trick question. I'll save you the cogitation. What matters is I'm old enough to have been involved in a great many business deals. Or, 'marriages' as some people refer to them. And it occurs to me; perhaps if this Sera child is worthy of the attention of the great and ancient Spider Clan, to the extent they are willing to enter into a ...'marriage'...with her, perhaps I would be better off calling our deal done right now, and letting you keep that of mine which you have already taken. I mean, we are in agreement it is a fair trade, yes? You are convincing me that perhaps I should spend more time with the Spider Clan, and also learn more about this Sera girl..." He strokes his chin thoughtfully.

"Anyway, listen to me going on; the point I sought to make is that I am old enough to have learned -- in the very fiber of my being -- to value greatly a simple deal. And perhaps simply keeping what we have is simplest? What do you think?" He looks at you expectantly. This is clearly a test of some sort.

He seems not to be threatening, though there is an ominous undertone to that last bit of his speech. He also does not appear to be bluffing, but actually inspired by your suggestion of an arranged marriage to Sera Aki-Kirei.

With the golem charging him, Kyras slashes at it with the Dragon's claws. They scrape off the stone, leaving a gash but not seeming to damage it in the least. The golem grabs hold of him with a vise grip, holding him squarely by the shoulders.

Before I take Kyras's turn, I need to know if Wei's bull rush broke him free or if he is still grappled (and now 10 feet further in).

As far as I can tell, Wei has just pushed all three of you ten feet back into the hall, and you are still grappled, unless there's a rule I'm not aware of stating that if you are grappling and you get bull-rushed, you automatically lose your grapple.

AC: 28 (T:28/FF:24) - Hp: 58/114 - Ki: 4/9 - F:11/R:11/W:12

hmm... I don't have any idea how this works. Assume I'll be doing an aid another this round to help Kyras break the grapple, however that works mechanically. This didn't quite work out as I had hoped...

It WAS a b#&@$in' bull rush, tho. ;-)

Okay, so, Kyras you get a +2 on your attempt to break the grapple and are still in your current position. I'll move Wei next to you since he's Aiding Another.

Even with the creature being lurched away by Wei slamming them backwards, all that seems to have happened is that they're now 10 feet further into the corridor. At least, he reflects, the golem isn't pounding him while it is busy holding him still. He croaks out a grunt of pain to the others. "Where's a gods-damned evil magnifying glass when you need one? Realizing that they are being split up by the forces against them, she calls back, "We must keep together! Get that door open!" just moments before Wei's bullrush inadvertently pushes Kyras further from her reach.

There's no time to consider what she just saw on that golem's head, to question what it could mean. Perhaps she'll get a closer look with what she prepares to do.

Remembering the odd reaction to her banner, Azami runs forward in an attempt to draw the full attention of the golem onto herself. "Drop him. I'm the one standing on the Mountain," she demands, voice hard as steel. The twist of her torso in the two-handed swing waves the banner betwixt Kyras' and the golem's face as her blade finds purchase in the arm holding its captive.

@Imuri: The pink-haired man laughs merrily, but the sound brings no joy. It is rather like the cold, brittle branches of winter trees restlessly rattling against one's bedroom window in deepest night. "No no no, master Shoto, you misunderstand me." he takes a drink of his tea and refills his mug. "I believe that you have an excellent point, and that this young Sera maiden is too valuable a trophy to simply let go. I believe she will be of much more use to me than the Erodal woman, whom you call "the Scarecrow". I believe it will be simplest for all involved if I simply keep her, and you keep who you already have, and we both go our own way. Unless..." Here he eyes you intently. "unless there is other business you would like to discuss, which discussion I will say I am quite open to starting with you and your house."

Round 5 Initiative 15

Tokine moves across the rubble that were several elementals. She strikes her glaive's haft upon the rocks and it sets the weapon to vibrating in a cacophony of bells. Struggling to keep hold of the wooden shaft, she bends the weapon toward Kyras and touches it against his back. The blade gives a loud buzz as it rattles against Kyras's armor, but the force then quickly radiates away from the weapon in sound waves that visibly wrap around Kyras before fading from sight. Tokine gives her arms a shake to break up the strain she just experienced.

"That should help keep them from grabbing you!" She yells overly loud once the din of the vibrations settle.

Imuri pushes his teacup away, signaling the end of pretense. It was your own suggestion that we keep to our original arrangement. The Scarecrow in exchange for the unharmed Sera and the kitsune, whatever her condition. It is a productive arrangement for a criminal mastermind, to kidnap a treasure of the Empire and to have no witnesses to that fact pursue you or the Emperor's justice. It is a good deal.

He sits up confidently, adopting an unflappable On. If you will not return the Sera to me, the Spider will lay webs for you. My mother, myself if I survive her, and all the future daimyo of the clan you would least see as enemy. We can make this exchange and lay a groundwork that our culture will need in the coming days, or you can fail to keep your word, and make an enemy of ten thousand Imuris, who until yesterday were content to let you hide below the city and pursue your own ends.

The Shoto looks regretful for a brief moment. I have many things to do today, and you seem to have convinced yourself that your game of Shogi is much better than mine. Tell me if we have the exchange, and if not, we will see if your Syndicate is prepared to pay the price. Yesterday, one samurai with no preparation walked into your halls, defeated your golems and left with an unconscious officer under his arms without being detected. Perhaps you will choose not to underestimate the Spider again today. Perhaps an astute sport treasures the opportunity to play again, and a shrewd businessman knows when he can make a good customer.

Imuri removes his hands from the table and places them calmly in his lap. He remembers his iai, though few schools trained their samurai to draw from the seated position. He looks prepared to leave. He locks eyes with the old man and says with finality..

It is a good deal.

Khangzhi nods at Tokine and winks, "That was fantastically executed, madame curator. I wish I had such capabilities. Now, for something I can ACTUALLY be useful for." The monk deftly maneuvers through the rubble to the other side of the door (M-22) and shouts, "Azami-san! Let us close this thing!"

Chu finishes pushing the door as wide as it will go, leaving a solid 10' entryway, when he is sucker-punched from behind by an earth elemental! It's the one elemental that went underground and left the room at the beginning of the battle; it saw what Chu was trying to accomplish and used its earth glide ability to tunnel around to the other side of the door, where it sat and waited for the first unlucky person to come into view. More imperial blood is spilt as the rough surface of the creature's fist tears a gouge out of Chu's left shoulder, nearly breaking the bone.

In the other door, Tokine's well-timed spell sets Kyras free and the golem that held him promptly switches tactics, lashing out with brutal punches that smash him and Azami, further cracking bones and bruising flesh.

Something strange is happening with the two golems behind the leader, though; their oversized heads' glowing eyes have switched from a fiery red to a dull orange, and have begun spinning around in circles like tops, as if they were bolts being unscrewed from something. After a few seconds of this, the heads pop up off the statues upon which they sat and sprout eight mechanical legs. They leap off the golems and stick to the wall and begin to approach Kyras, Azami, and the lead Golem. Their intent is unclear.

Azami only:
Both of these head-spider constructs bear the symbol of your father's shipping company. It glows the same orange as their eyes. It is unlikely anyone else present would realize this.

DC22 K(Local), Tokine, Kyras, and Wei ONLY:
The two head-spiders have a glowing orange symbol on their sides that you didn't notice until now, when it started shining the same color and intensity as their eyes. You remember seeing this symbol years ago on crates and banners belonging to a now-defunct mercantile and shipping company from somewhere in the west. You also note that the heads began to detach after Azami brandished her banner.

Kyras slips free of the statue's grasp thanks to Tokine's magic. Now unfettered, he sees that none of the grotesque heads are focused on him. He looks back and sees that they seem to be focused on Azami. "Azami! Get back! They want your banner!" He shouts a warning to the most trusted friend and ally of - literally - the past several decades. He fixes himself even more determinedly in front of the golems, intent on ensuring that she - and the others nearby - can withdraw safely while he takes the heavy blows from the constructs. "Everyone, move!"

Delay to Initiative 11 to cover their withdraw.

Her eyes narrow at the sight of the spider-like heads heading their way. "That's a family symbol on their heads. Why would that be here?" There's nothing comforting about seeing the symbol, especially when Kyras draws her attention to the fact that they are intent on her banner.

She glances over at the battered Kyras and the golem in front of them, barely hurt; she'd fight her friend on his insistence to guard them when it's her job to guard him, but it would be a waste of breath. From the grim set of his mouth, if she doesn't go, he won't. "Withdrawing to the door," Azami alerts him.

Envoy-6 reduces the elemental before it into rubble as the Loyal Shadow, now that he is aware of his opponent, is easily able to duck the two clumsy haymakers it throws his way.

Chu staggers, the blow sent him reeling and he could feel the tendons in his shoulder were jarred and out of place. The elemental had nearly knocked his shoulder out of the socket, forcing Chu to regard it with an unsettling calm. "Persistent aren't you?" He wiped blood from his eye casually as he called over his shoulder to Envoy Six. "The way is open... But the path is blocked..."

Chu stepped back, 5ft step - Y-7 just out of reach of the towering elemental, tracing symbols in the air and using his own blood to fuel what he did next. "Let me show you what runs through my veins..." He focused his Ki inwardly for but a moment before releasing the pent up energy, focusing it on the blood on his hand. Igniting it into an intense flame that danced and rolled in his hand just before he unleashed it scorching the elemental from head to toe.

Kyras dives backwards through the air, strangely graceful despite his massive, magically-enlarged size. He protects himself from leaving an opening for the massive fists of the moving statue to slam into his body. He feels the battle frenzy leaving him, setting his body to exhaustion. He pushed himself hard in the fight, taking blow after blow from the assault. If not for Tokine's healing and the golem's attempt to drag him away instead of simply beating him to death, he would have likely fallen. Kyras sees the door slam as Wei pushes it shut, seeing his blade get knocked aside by the statues' massive feet. "Didn't need that anyway," he pants. "Let's get going."

@Imuri: The old man stares at you, his face utterly unreadable. After a small eternity he gives a short grunt of a laugh and in that single moment he seems incredibly, impossibly young; like a bravo in the spring of his life, his skin free of wrinkles and spots and his eyes dancing and bright. Like all moments, however, this one passes, and he returns to his usual self; somewhat gnarled, clearly an ancient elder. He gives you a smile like a knife, and folds his hands over his belly.

"Young lord Shoto, you say spiders will build webs. But spiders cannot build webs in the empty air, lest they fall to the ground, useless and tangled, to be trampled on by nobles and beasts alike. No, spiders need structures, Imuri-san, against which to anchor; walls, ceilings, even blades of grass will serve this purpose, or...trees." His expression changes not a bit.

"The roots of trees, nourished only by the natural bounty of the Land, slowly grow deep beneath buildings, and roads, and the grass; they press up through soil and stone alike and each with ease, with time, until they are all around you, in places you may wish them not to be, blocking drainage pipes and introducing passageways by which vermin may enter pantries and root cellars. And the trees cannot be done entirely without, and roots that are trimmed grow back."

"Yet the roots of the trees are not the tree entire, lurking and hiding underground, wearing away fir and foundation, loam and lodestone. No; above ground the tree gives shelter, and comfort, and fuel, and food, and raw materials for art, and in its season each tree gives beauty. Sheltering the parks, the grand walkways, the boulevards, bringing pomp and circumstance to even imperial galas, dances..." he pauses to look out the window, then once again gazes into your unflinching eyes. "...dinners."

"Ten thousand Imuris may become my enemies, this is true, but whether they wish it or not, they are also my tenants. Who tends your gardens, samurai? How grow your groves?" He gives a big belly laugh then, and claps his hand down hard on the table, clearly startling the petrified servers. They rush over to clear the tea service. The pink-haired man nods at you, almost as if you were equals, though it's obvious to you that he does not feel this is the case. He treats you still as one might treat a respected rival's promising younger sibling; to be handled with care, but clearly not a threat. Yet.

"It is, as you say, a good deal, though perhaps not for the reasons you think. Nonetheless. You have stated I shall leave the Sera at your clan's very doorstep. Fine. This is done. What assurance, then, do I have that the Erodal woman will come to me in a timely manner? This detail, I feel, is all that remains to be settled to my satisfaction, then we may part, for now."

DC17 Sense Motive:
You have the spooky feeling that when he says "This is done", the act of dropping off Sera Aki-Kirei literally has just been completed, as in she's already there, waiting for you, but that it was not a pre-arranged thing. In other words, he somehow willed it into happening.

The mass of troops on the old statue base have finally crushed the last of the goblins, and Sera Zhongyi has vanquished the elemental that vexed her. A group of Black Orchid samurai assist the Loyal Shadow in dispatching the elemental that blocks the passage, and your large group is able to move quickly through the door opened by Chu's surprising musicianship. Once on the other side, everyone chips in to close the door, moving in rhythmic counterpoint to ominous pounding sounds coming from 2 of the other four doors out in the room.

The way behind you secured -- as much as seems possible, anyway -- you continue down this new corridor, which is a wonder. Everyone is given pause by the glory of its walls, which are covered in murals and frescoes and carvings and sketches and all manner of artwork. Songs are penned, even, ground into the stones or inked carefully upon their surface. As you move along, you notice that the paintings, while beautiful and striking in and of themselves, are all of musicians making music. Some of the instruments and practices depicted are common, and known in the empire still today, but others are strange or baroque, or even painful-looking; ancient techniques lost to the modern-day artist.

"No one knows, anymore, why these tunnels exist." Envoy-6 gurgles crankily from the front of the party. "They are at least a thousand years old, maybe much more, but there is no record of anyone ever living here. Maybe they were shelter in dark times; the last Necromancer of Vestrille was robbed of his throne millennia ago, and came here seeking a new kingdom. What happened to the royal family of that time is not recorded." The metalclad imperial servant leaves the implications of his last statement hanging in the air. "These tunnels grow, and change, and shift like a thing alive, like tree roots or a labyrinth of old, and therefore must always be mapped with a tireless vigilance. Hence, we envoys exist and are always working. Always..." the thing trails off. It makes a terrible, strangled cough then continues. "Despite the overwhelming presence of the Syndicates down here, things are less organized than you might imagine. It is entirely possible that only some or even none of the enemies we just faced were sent directly by any of the Syndicates to deal with us. The goblins, for example, fear and hate the Plum Blossom. It is likely they thought us to be them, else they may even have let us pass. Though, upon reflection, that is probably too much to hope for."

"Envoy!" calls Zhongyi from off to one side. "What of these paintings? Why are they erased?" The elder Sera sister, sporting a couple of freshly-closed wounds on her petal-pale flesh, has stopped by a large swath of wall that appears to be in the process of being wiped out, as if by a paint remover, or slow magic. Centuries-old drawings destroyed with nary a care, or so it seems.

"I do not know." responds Envoy-6 without even looking. "I make note of these things, but do not always receive explanations when I make reports. So it goes."

You have not gone terribly far when the distinctive roaring sound of a large river rapids reaches your ears. Everyone looks askance at this, but after rounding a corner what you hear is confirmed by what you see; a massive river is hammering through a channel cut in the stone.

You have entered a low-ceilinged chamber of some sort that is bisected by a raging rapids. You have entered via a doorway smack in the middle. About 200' away off to both the left and the right are cavern entrances that the river is pouring through, moving out of the cavern mouth to your right and slamming into the cave off to your left, moving at an astonishing rate of speed. Clearly this is not a body of water one could easily ford or wade through.

Unfortunately, this river is also quite wide -- at least 80' across. Your entire army is gathered on a just-barely large enough platform, with a small number of soldiers still stuck back in the tunnel. It is, to say the least, a most unpleasant little cul-de-sac in which to be trapped, or "trapped".

"This was not here yesterday." Envoy-6 groans miserably. "This was a trickle. Not even worth noting. How I despise this place!" The black and brackish water smashes and rushes past him, a mockery of his efforts at mapping the underground.

Zhongyi gives a pointed look at all of the plate-mail-clad soldiers with you and then raises an eyebrow; NOW what?.

Shadow Lodge

Once they stopped by the river Chu was able to focus on resetting his poor shoulder. bit worse for wear, he leaned against a wall and slowly arched his shoulder as he tried to work his slightly dislocated limb back fully in the socket. He finally found it and with an excruciating stab of pain he snapped it into place and for the briefest moment his long fangs snapped out as he hissed loudly. Once it was back in place it felt good and he quickly laid his fangs back down before regarding the envoy curiously.

Rolling his shoulder, wincing ever so slightly from stretching his abused muscles, and flexing his fingers he came to stand next ot the others overlooking the river. "More then likely the paintings were used as some sort of coded message, another way of mapping this place without the use of parchment and ink. The ongoing struggle down here may be the reason they are being marred an effort to blind either side and make traversing this place... Difficult."

He looks at the river astonished by its ferocity and size and then looks back at the gathering of soldiers. This was a bad place to be attacked...

Focusing on moving forward he looks for large enough rock column that could be felled into making a bridge, or groups of stalactites that could be knocked off the ceiling to form steps across the river. He looked for anything really that could be used to aid them in moving forward as turning back wasn't an option.

"We may want to send some men back and have them watch the rear, the last thing we need is those golems coming up behind us and shoving our amassed forces over this edge." He nods his head to Sera Zhongyi. "I will leave that to your discretion of course."

Tokine runs her hand along the faded painting, "To cover such art is an affront, BUT to erase it....to destroy....it is such a shame.

In a bit of depression, she moves along and finds her self getting more and more packed in among the troops. She tries to squeeze back toward the sound of the Envoy's voice. He is just ahead, but there is just no room. This close...a bit too close for her comfort...she notices the cuts and wounds...the blood and bruises on the soldiers around her. With her arms nearly pinioned at her side she manages to inch her glaive, point first, up and above her head. She calls out, "Those around me, look to the glaive, crowd in close for but a moment of healing." She did not think it could get much tighter but for that moment it did. It took all her concentration to think of a comforting tune..and to radiate out that comfort...and to fade as the breath leaves her lungs.

Channel Healing -> 5d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 2, 6, 4) = 18

Channel Healing -> 5d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 4, 6, 5) = 18

Breath returns she feels hands upon her back and quiet mutters of Make way for the Priestess...Easy now...Careful. Tokine open her eyes to see old stone walls passing slowly by, before she realizes that what she was looking at was the ceiling, as she is passed above the heads of the soldiers along the tunnel. The sense of an opening approached and she reached out above her and touched the old carved stone and her hand stuck. At the mouth of an opening she lifted herself up and above the troops to perch on a cavern wall. Cold air filled her grateful lungs, so different from the warm air of the tunnel tinged with seat and blood.

Looking out she sees Envoy-6 and her companions on the edge of a raging river passing trough the cavern. She calls from her perch on the wall, "Do we need to cross this? Can I help from up here?

She would have wanted her companions to received the full effect of that double healing plus as many soldiers as humanly possible in inhuman conditions.

You all cast about, but there is no material here for bridge-building. It is possible that in the gloomy corridors on the other side there may be items one could use to improvise a crossing, but this side is barren. "This river must be crossed, I'm afraid." Mutters Envoy-6. "We go across, or we go back."
