Mists of War - DM Downrightamazed

Game Master downrightamazed

Three groups of gaijin approach the Son of the Heavens, ruler of the Empire of Mists, in his palace in far Lanzhu. A great war is underway in the west, this is known, but what could these strangers want?

@Kyras, @Azami, @Chu: The blue telestari shakes its head slowly. "It...has been too long...I...do you have...the..." There is a painfully long and awkward pause. "...fish? Yes! The swimmer. The Candaru. The fish. You must have it. If you do not..."

@Dare Mo: The tavern is not terribly busy, which given the awful weather outside is not surprising. The well-dressed and well-spoken conspirators have taken a table together in the open, and seem to be rather well-known, on top of everything else; the tavern owner greets them warmly, as one would a group of old friends, and brings them soup and tea as they continue to speak of inventory and trade routes in elven. As you walk past (for their table is very near the door), a couple peasants approach and prostrate themselves before this group (two men and one elf) and begin to launch into a detailed story about how they need money to get out of debt from the syndicates. They have barely made it through this unwieldy supplication when the elf interrupts them -- not rudely, but abruptly -- to ask "Now now, that's enough of that, how much do you need?"

The peasants look baffled, then look at each other, then back up at the group. They gulp comically, like a pair of clowns selling a joke. "F-five hundred." Says the peasant who's been doing all the talking. The elf, without so much as batting an eye, takes three small-ish coin purses off his belt and drops them into the peasants' outstretched hands. "Here. That is three hundred. Come to our service tonight and I will give you the rest. You know the place? The new church?" The peasants nod dumbly, grinning from ear-to-ear, and get up, bowing as they do, which makes for another comic display as they try to bow, thank the elf, get up, pocket the money, promise to show up, and leave, all at once.

Eventually they make their way out, and the three conspirators go back to their conversation in elvish. You are fairly certain they are aware of your presence, but they seem like the types who would be aware of their surroundings anyway. It is them, you, and a few other customers. The tavern owner approaches you to take your order.

@Imuri: Bethany smiles, and you detect a distinct trace of the rakish mischief that plagues her brother's manners. Must run in the family. "That can be agreeable. I am a researcher, Lord Shoto. An arcanist and an archivist. But most importantly, as I'm sure you noticed, " -- she gives the barest of nods to her tattoo -- "I am...quite close...to the Emperor. I swore to him I would keep the exact nature of our relationship a secret, but to one such as yourself, who must know how to read the signs, the basics will be laid bare anyway."

She re-arranges the fruit, but does not eat anymore. "This is, I believe, the most significant thing I can tell you about myself, aside from what I have already said. I do not know if this knowledge makes your task easier or not, but the fact remains as I have stated it. The emperor is aware of my Status at all times."

"What fish? We have no fish," Azami answers guardedly.

At a loss for what afflicts the fish, Tokine cast Detect Magic to see if some outside force is at work.

A silly thought enters her head and she sounds even sillier as she sounds it out, but water-dragons sprouting in her koi pond....could that be a sign of....her father? "Father? Is this your doing?" Fool! She immediately regrets uttering the words, for marking her a fool in believing fanciful stories about her nonexistent sire. "But what else is there to describe this? Soon they will outgrow the pond, and if they are not water-dragons they will surely die......Has the Floating Kingdom come ashore?

In one of the most surreal moments of his long life, Kyras Erodal reaches into his shirt to pull out a small dried fish, given to him by a long-dead-but-completely-alive Bard King, in order to present it to a long-extinct progenitor of this world in order to be better equipped to ask him how to avoid destroying the world with his magical leg tattoo. He regards the non-magical fish quietly for a moment, long enough to let the surreal nature of this interaction flow through him, before holding it up. "Is this the fish you're looking for?"

@Kyras: Deilaavenaada holds its hands out in a supplicatory gesture. "Yes...the Candaru..." It takes the fish and in a single lightning-quick movement shoves it up under the grill of the strange fencer's mask it wears. There is a sort of ripping, crunching sound, and with an immense sigh the Telestari stands up straighter and evens out its shoulders, making it even taller than it was before; well near 8 feet. Its body fills out a bit, causing the armor to creak in protest against the new bulk of fresh muscle and sinew.

The telestari flexes its fingers and rolls its shoulders. "Much better. Yes. I thank you, Gate of the West. Now, if you will come with me, we have much to discuss, and I must retrieve my weapons."

At that moment, there is a shuffling footstep from an alley on the other side of the street. Lu, Xun Rui Bao's lame and dumb manservant, comes stumbling out. He stands there, dripping wet, in the freezing and pounding rain, looking at Kyras from under his dull brow. A thick drop of near-ice collects on his left eyebrow, and falls. As it does so, Lu's face spreads into a cruel grin. He snaps his fingers once, and there is a rush of cloth all around you. Though you do not immediately see any enemies, you are all experienced enough to know that you are surrounded by ninja, and they are simply informing you of that fact.

I need active perception checks if you want to start looking for the enemy. There are 12 of them.

Lu opens his mouth, as if to speak, but there is a clattering of rain shoes coming down Market street that stops him from doing so. Lu whips his head to one side, his eyes wide with annoyance, but the malicious smirk never leaves his face. Looking in the same direction, you quickly spot the source of Lu's ire; policemen. A small foot patrol -- six of them -- are coming your way.

@Tokine: After casting your divinatory magics, you are nearly knocked back by the overwhelming aura of transmutation that is radiating out from the fountain and pool.

DC22 perception:
There is a face in the water, it is in a part of the pool where no one is standing, so it could not be a reflection. The face is distant and noble and sad and not quite human. Elven, perhaps?

Before you can investigate further, two of the younger interns -- still just art students -- come careening around the corner, rushing past an indignant Izumi, who shouts after them.

"Mistress! Mistress! Esteemed Curator-sama!" they shout, immediately falling to their knees and prostrating themselves before you. "There is a base criminal at the doors of the temple, requesting entrance! A burakumin of the syndicates! He claims he has been sent by an advisor of the emperor, advisor Kage! Surely it is a lie, no? What should we do?! He is filthy and dangerous, and bloodied!"

The noissome couple have completely crushed your concentration on the divination spell, and when you look back at the waters of the fountain, they are undisturbed, though the koi are still getting bigger.

"Son of a b&*%&." He hadn't really given the large fool much thought after he had led Kyras into the first of what would prove to be many ambushes. For all he knew at the time, the brute didn't have any idea of what he was doing. Seeing him now, it is clear that he is aware of his actions.

And if he is aware of his actions, he is likely aware of their consequences.

His feet leave the ground as he points an outstretched palm at Lu's face, a small flame emerging and growing quickly in size and heat. The very rain around them begins to steam as he emanates heat, each drop sizzling before it hits his skin. He looks over at Azami before unleashing the flame and acid upon the man, recalling how Lu's first ambush had ended, and holds back for her signal.

Azami looks askance at the blue armored Telestari shoving the old, dead fish into his gullet. The arrival of Lu and ninja to the scene keeps her from wondering if she will ever understand all this arcane dreck happening around her.

She half wishes that the appearance of Lu surprised her more, remembering how both Daveth and Kyras had scoffed at her assertion that he was more than he seemed.

Azami pulls her katana in a single swift motion, not understanding why exactly Kyras hesitates, looking to her; nevertheless, she nods curtly in agreement as she looks for her own first victim among the ninja. "He'll have a hard time begging for mercy if he's mute," she growls to the Warbanian.

Chu had been watching the entire scene unfold silently and was pleased when Kyras handed over the fish to the Telestari. Baslav's strange gifts were starting to make more sense, hopefully though all of them would serve the good and not bring ill to the empire. At the appearance of the strange man Chu rises to his full height when he becomes aware of the threat of the ninja around him.

The approaching Policeman made him wish he could grimace, but instead he continued to glance around with his keen sense as he tried to discern where the ninja were. His magical armor thankfully was still in place but his shield had faded mere moments before their arrival.

Tokine addresses the two acolyes. Listen very carefully. Watch that pool very closely but do not go near under any circumstances. If anything beside fish come out of it, one of you come find me, immediately. Understood? Good." She does not really provide them time to ponder her request or burden her with questions before she sets off for the front doors.

Upon reaching them she bows to her guards. "Thank you for summoning me over this matter. I will escort him inside, for he is wounded and we do not turn away thos in need."

She does not great the man the guards barred from entering. Instead she reaches out ans guides his elbow. She leads him to the guest room immediately off the entrance hall, that had just recently held Kyras.

@Kyras, @Azami, @Chu: Deilaavenaada looks around as the three of you nod towards the ninja lurking on rooftops and in shadows. As Lu speaks, then looks down the road, the Telestari speaks. "Ah. You. I remember you, trickster, and your amusements. But today I do not have time for you. Occido!" As it speaks this last word, Lu's grin suddenly freezes and he looks over at you all in horror. His mouth moves as if to speak, but instead of words all that comes out is a death rattle as he keels over, dead, his heart stopped before his body hits the ground.

The telestari calls out. "Come, then, you lurkers-in-shadows, if you would challenge us, for your fate shall be worse." The ninja all pause at what they just saw, which gives all of you time to strike.

"Maybe I should have eaten that fish." Kyras eyes the Telestari with some terror, but cannot resist making a joke. He soars over to the nearest shadowy ninja, bathing him in flame from above. The roof that the ninja stands upon catches flame, nearly incinerated with the burning fire of the Dragon. Even if the ninja evades his flame, he will likely be hard-pressed to keep his footing on the burning rooftop, and Kyras's ability to fly should keep him safe from retaliation. Kyras draws his sword, ready to fall upon them with all his strength and rage.

Even the new link sends me to the dining room. Kyras will position himself so that the end of the 15' cone will strike a ninja while he flies in the courtyard.

@Tokine: As you begin walking back to the larger galleries and offices, you hear raised voices. One is clearly Izumi's and the other is clearly...

"Mr. D'arsenne!" Your chief assistant yells, obviously driven far beyond her capacity for calm. "I can make it no plainer; this part of the Temple is currently not open for visitors!"

The two junior interns you left in charge hurry to meet you. "Madame Curator! The koi...they are enormous! We were just on our way to tell you, but they are making...such noises; mewlings and growls and...and...and other sounds besides, and the Palace Envoy heard and wants to see! He is being most rude!"

You enter the room to find D'arsenne, his eyes afire, staring down Izumi, who by the line of her jaw you can tell has drawn her proverbial line in the sand and will not budge. They are blocking the doorway to the fountain and it is obviously a case of irresistible force meets immovable object. Both notice you when you walk in and immediately start vying for your attention, yelling over each other and gesturing and generally just making a huge racket.

They are both silenced by a hideous wail from the the koi pond and fountain chamber, a sound like the birthing of a demon, you'd wager.

@Kyras, @Chu, @Azami: The ninjas, having apparently gathered their wits, dive in and attack, some jumping down off the roof and others hanging and using higher ground to their advantage. It is obvious that the three of you are not the primary targets; Deilaavenaada is. Unfortunately for the ninja commanded by the late Lu, the telestari is a lethal combatant, and while none of them so much as scratch its armor, it hammers each of them with brutal kicks and punches.

Not all the ninja are able to make it to the main fight, though, and two attack Chu and Azami each, scoring slices and slashes against the stalwart defenders of the empire.

Kyras smirks at Chu's attempt to summon fire at their enemies. "Come on now, Scales, you can do better!" From above, he unleashes a torrent of flame upon one of the ninjas that approaches Azami from the rooftop. It is uncontrollably powerful, much like Kyras himself, lashing out in all directions rather than a tight beam as Chu's was. It is so intense that it envelops the assailant completely, turning him to ash in a bright flash of flame and heat. He floats in the air as the others turn to see the source of the fire. Kyras summons a ball of flame in his hand, ready to scorch another of the attackers, when he spots their strange ally making short, easy work of his own attackers.

No, remember; you only get one AoO on a given target per round. You can make as many AoOs as you want against multiple targets, but you can't pile them all onto one.

Combat Reflexes and Additional Attacks of Opportunity:

I was just saying your guys get a ton of AoO's on me, and when I looked it up to make sure I was doing the moving right I found the following and cringed. lol

From PFSRD -

If you have the Combat Reflexes feat, you can add your Dexterity modifier to the number of attacks of opportunity you can make in a round. This feat does not let you make more than one attack for a given opportunity, but if the same opponent provokes two attacks of opportunity from you, you could make two separate attacks of opportunity (since each one represents a different opportunity). Moving out of more than one square threatened by the same opponent in the same round doesn't count as more than one opportunity for that opponent. All these attacks are at your full normal attack bonus.

From Me~ xD

Example, The bow feat which allows you to threaten all adjacent squares and once you've acquired the Snapshot and Improved Snapshot feats would allow an archer to tear up an opponent who moves into their squares because they threaten a 15 ft radius. Thus if a kobold charged the archer they would provoke 2 separate AoO's as the kobold hits the 15ft mark they get 1 shot and then at the 10ft mark they get a second shot. At least thats how I am understanding the RAW. I could be looking at it wrong and I just learned this so yeah... I learn new stuff everyday, hence why I am cringing at what feats these ninja have. >.>;;;;;;;;;;

@Kyras, @Chu, @Azami:

The ninja reconfigure and move around you; the last one on the rooftops turns and bounds off, running away to the north. He jumps down into the alleys to get cover from Kyras' lethal flame. The rest move in, clearly still targeting the telestari, but they cannot touch him. Deftly, it parries every blow and deflects every sword, with nought but its bare hands.

The telestari warrior then executes an astonishing sequence of attacks on all six ninja surrounding it, landing crushing blows on each, snapping one's neck with seemingly no effort.

"Hyah!" he yells and he is answered by a horrid, shrieking roar. There is something about that roar that is familiar.

Before you can recall where you may have heard that sound before, your concentration is interrupted by the junior interns. "Madame Curator! They'll kill him!" The tremendous roars; louder now than they were even just a moment ago, seem to confirm that statement.

DC18 K(Arcana):
The roar sounded like that of a dragon.

@Imuri: Bethany Erodal favors you with a wry smile. It is not difficult to see what the emperor sees in her, assuming her story about their relationship is true. "My brother? Don't bother. Much as I would like to see him, and despite anything else I may have said, I'll be better off on my own. Last thing I need is him barging in with a misguided rescue attempt. I have a fair idea what they'll do to me. If I'm right, I can handle it. If I'm wrong, it won't matter anyway because I'll be dead before he arrives. The Plum Blossoms rule the City Under, Lord Shoto. Their holdings in the City Above are practically meaningless as long as they control the resources of those below. Nice, but meaningless. If they intend to kill me, then I will die. It is not possible to escape their clutches once you are caught. Indeed, even simply traveling in the City Under is...difficult."

@Wei Khangzhi-Lung: Again, the dream.

The Tranquil Peak. The tea plant you have never seen. A mountain path. Then scales, molten rock, flame.

And that voice.

There must be a baku in your dreams, for though you know the voice says much every time you have this dream, all you can remember is the phrase "they are burning the honeypitcher".

DC20 K(Nature):
The honeypitcher plant, you know, is a carnivorous plant that grows in the jungles around Dambulla and Maho, and whose toxic juices have great medicinal value. That is the only possible connection you can make.

You awake, freezing and damp, in your hut on the preserve in the marshes outside the capitol city of Lanzhu. This rain is brutal and cold; you can hear hail mixed in with the rain. As you get a fire going, you think of the ill portents of having the same nightmare for the last three nights. The first time was the night before all the visiting dignitaries arrived, the three groups of gaijin. You had hoped to get into the city to see your friend Chujitsuna Kage, who is an advisor to the emperor, or perhaps Madame Tokine Nagano, Curator of the Imperial Temple of Cultural Exchange, who has visited your preserve a few times, and whose temple's marvels you have viewed and meditated upon in the past, in the hopes of asking them, but there were new clutches of ducklings to attend to, and the koi have been acting very strange recently. Oh and of course there is that poor injured bird -- a swift -- that you found on the walkway yesterday. The bird is convalescing in one of the eyries now, you realize you should check on it.

After getting a fire going and warming up a bit, you step out to make the morning rounds. You are not two steps out your door, the rain smashing into you as if it meant you great harm, when you spy a strange shape lying on your path just inside the east gate, the one that points towards the city.

The shape moves and you see; it is a man.

Yay! My first roll in the campaign succeeds!

Khangzhi awakened from his night's rest confused. It seems an odd dream to have. Mountains? I have always wanted to visit one, but not in such a distressed state. And what sort of tea plant could grow there? Surely nothing of quality. He shrugged to himself as he stretched out, cracking well-used joints. A sign to be sure, and an ill one. Its meaning will reveal itself in time, as such things are wont to do.

His humble quarters providing poor protection from the weather, Khangzhi set about lighting a fire in the hearth. The warmth would be appreciated, and fresh tea sounded quite appealing. I must check the koi pond first, Khangzhi thought while preparing his tea. I fear with the rain, one of the snapping turtles might choose to invade. After that, I shall see to the swift.

He stepped out into the rain, shielding his face and thinking, Clearly, I shall not be painting to..., when saw the shape of a man lying near the eastern gate. Khangzhi glanced at the two foo guardians of the sanctuary, Ishi the turtle and Tetsu the snake. They were unerring in their ability to sense evil, and did not appear distressed. Assuming the man was not likely to be a threat, but still cautious, Khangzhi approached.

Perception check to eye-up the man: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31

Standing over the man, water pouring off his scales, Khangzhi said, Greetings, honorable stranger! My name is Wei Khangzhi-Lung. What brings you to my sanctuary? Perhaps you wished to discuss honeypitchers?

Just wanted to take the opportunity to say hello everybody. I'm pretty excited about this... Please bear with me while I get caught up on the story, and learn the ins-and-outs of the PbP format.

edit - I think i figured out the dice roller now

@Wei: As you approach the prone stranger, your words turn to stone on your tongue. The water around him is all pink, stained with blood, and he is barely breathing. His back is to you.

AC: 28 (T:28/FF:24) - Hp: 58/114 - Ki: 4/9 - F:11/R:11/W:12

How is he dressed? Is he armed or equipped with anything of note? And are there any obvious wounds?

One last question, are the foo creatures reacting in anyway?

@Chu, @Azami, @Kyras: The police, curiously, are not hurrying towards you, but rather seem content to approach slowly and steadily. Whether this is standard procedure or something else is not clear to you.

DC22 Perception:
Lu is moving.

@Wei: Looking more closely, you see the man has a katana, but it is in its saya. As you circle around and look at his whole personage, you see his clothes are torn and beat up on the back, but in front they are badly ripped and sliced, as if by a blade. He has several terrible and obvious wounds. His face is hidden by his mid-length hair, which is matted with blood and some other material. If he is conscious, he gives no indication of this. He is dressed plainly, like a day laborer or small businessman; like no one of note.

DC15 Heal:
One of his legs is broken and both ankles are sprained. It looks like he may have a dislocated shoulder.

DC20 K(Arcana):
The material in his hair is the residue of an extremely flammable alchemical compound. It's a miracle he did not get burned alive. The rain may well have saved his life.

DC12 K(Local):
While it is odd for someone dressed as he is to be carrying a weapon, it isn't unheard of. He could be a low-level courier for one of the Great Houses or something, or a criminal. Either way, it is a thing worthy of note.

Khangzhi feels a bit ashamed of himself for addressing a man so obviously hurt in the manner he did, and moves swiftly in to examine him. Unsure of nature and full extent of the man's injuries, Khangzhi turns to ever vigilant Ishi and speaks. Ishi, my friend, do my the kind favor of watching over this man while I retrieve a healing salve. I would move him to the hut, but I cannot tell if it would put him at further risk. I would also like to know what you can tell me of his arrival here, but first things first.

Khangzhi leans in to the injured man and gently whispers, I will return shortly, onisan. You must try to endure. Swiftly he returns to his shelter, thinking to himself, Ill signs indeed. Hastily grabbing a small vial from his chest, Khangzhi pauses briefly, shrugs, and takes a second one. I know not if I can trust him, but I cannot allow him to die... He then returns, and after removing the man's katana, gently poors the contents of the first vial into the stranger's mouth.

Potion of Cure Light 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
And if that is not enough to revive him... 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Meh, the second roll was depressing. If the guy still isn't at least stable, and hopefully conscious, Khangzhi will do it again. Also, that puts me down to 8 Cure Lights... will adjust character sheet.

AC: 28 (T:28/FF:24) - Hp: 58/114 - Ki: 4/9 - F:11/R:11/W:12

K(local) to know of a nearby healer... 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

@Wei: You notice, as you fetch your potion, that the foo dogs are vigilant but not on guard. They must not think this man a threat, though whether that is due to his being non-threatening or near-dead is not clear.

As the divine healing energy of Gozreh, of the sea and of the sky, washes through him, the man coughs and opens his eyes, then coughs worse until he spits up a sticky mass of blood and...something that hits the ground with a wet *SMACK*. He looks up at you through his still-matted hair. "Thank you, son of dragons. I...know not...where...the..." He lays on his back, then, and returns to unconsciousness.

You know there is a healer about three miles away, in the gateway village up the road to the west, that often acts as a last stop for caravans and travelers seeking entrance to the city. This man, you note, aside from his still-terrible wounds, is utterly and completely unremarkable in appearance.

He could quite literally be anybody.

DC26 Perception:
The thing he coughed up doesn't look like something that should come out of a human body. The parts of it that aren't covered in blood or sputum gleam in the rain.

Shadow Lodge

Chu takes up a defensive posture standing behind Azami protectively, so long as he was breathing they wouldn't be able to surround her. He heard Kyra's comment despite the sounds of battle and the pounding rain and gave a throaty grunt in reply, much to low for anyone but those adjacent to him to hear. Scales, a new one, simple and humorous....

Perception 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22

"Azami that strange man is moving, the one the Telestari had brought down in the beginning..."

As he speaks he parries some of the incoming blows and returns the favor with attacks of his own by drawing his Hanbo and lashing out at the wounded ninja.

Khangzhi, believing the stranger safe to move, gently loads him into the back of his pull-cart and returns once more to his hut to fetch a stone jar, a blanket and a tarp. He throws the tarp over the cart to keep the worst of the rain off the man, and does his best to stuff the blanket around him under the tarp. Cautiously he scoops the gunk off the ground, thinking it might be of some help to the healer, and places it inside the jar.

I must get this man aid, I trust the sanctuary to you, Ishi and Tetsu, he says to the two foo guardians, and embarks on his journey to the healer.

Kyras spots Lu moving ever so slightly as he soars in the air. Rage fills him as he remembers the look on the man's face as he led him into an ambush, belying his simplicity with the cunning behind them. He flies next to the mute, boots hitting the solid ground, and lets the anger build in him. He feels the Dragon scratching at the edge of his mind, but he takes control and uses the ancient strength without letting the beast take over completely. He takes his katana and plunges it into the man, driving it all the way to the ground. A lesser blade would have broken, but the magic that makes it sharper and swifter also makes it stronger.

I will, of course be packing all my gear, including healing potions, since there's obviously some trouble afoot...

The sound of dragons emerging for her koi pond does not surprise her, as that was her initial guess. That D'arsenne would charge in there....well that did surprise her.

"Stay back here...safe....but ready the staff. She rounds the corner and bellows, [b]"STOP! This is a temple. She knows two demons appeared here just yesterday...but this was different...and from her pond.

Entering the area, she takes in the scene before preparing her next action.
