Alexander Pierpoint |
I can't seem to move my token. Please move me to about 2 squares from the Gnolls - up and left.
"Suffer now, filthy vermin," Alexander hisses as he points his rapier blade at the Gnolls - and unleashes a blast of clashing light and colour on them!
Colour spray. Will save DC 16 or consequences. This will probably catch the prisoner, too, I know...
Zhalet Soroush |
Note that Zhalet will target the two gnolls in the rear. Ignore the sad little line box I drew.
Kilarra Norgorkin |
Kilarra seems ready to go but not wanting to get caught up in what she knows Alexander is planning she waits until just after he makes his move.
Delay till just after Alexander goes. If I am allowed to I also wanted to look carefully around just before we attack to make sure we are not about to be caught in an ambush ourselves. After the color spray goes off I want to attack one of the ones that looks stunned if possible.

From his secure position, Rukn starts the attack by letting an arrow fly to one of the unaware gnolls. The string vibrates into the night, and a deadly projectile...
Will target preferably one of the further away gnolls.

Surprise Round
Caught utterly unawares, the gnolls look stupidly at Alexander as he reveals himself and moves close to the four surrounding the human man.
Their surprise increases still further as Zhalet steps out and a cloud of glittering particles settles over the two furthest removed from the group.
In quick succession, the others add their own contributions to the overwhelming surprise:
Solomon's dart, thrown as he steps out from concealment, makes a glowing streak ending at the side of gnoll #3's shoulder. (Gnoll #3: 12 damage.)
Kilarra charges forward, her dagger slicing deeply into the gnoll #6's side. (Gnoll #6: 6 damage.)
Rukn's arrow is no slower than Kilarra's blade in piercing entirely through the gnoll #6's neck. (Gnoll #6: 10 damage.)
To complete the assault, Erizi rushes forward, putting himself in a position to charge the survivng gnolls.

Alexander Pierpoint |
"Lumen lunaticus!" Alexander shouts - and a cone of jarring lights bursts from his blade, striking the Gnolls within reach.
Colour spray. Will save DC 16 to negate!
Zhalet Soroush |
After releasing her spell, Zhalet begins running toward the gnolls engulfed in the swirling golden storm. She draws her scimitar as she goes, and takes care to keep her eyes averted from Alexander's direction, knowing what is to come. She stops short of the gnolls, preparing to begin her dance before engaging them.
I believe I'm beyond Alexander's color spray cone, that's the idea at least. Stopping short to take a 5' step to the closest gnoll within the glitterdust effect during the next round.
Solomon Azar |
Solomon moved up near Alexander and threw another dart at the gnoll he'd hit a moment earlier, then brought his Falchion up to ready for melee.
Ranged Attack vs. Gnoll 3: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15

Rukn ed-Din |
Rukn was expecting the gnoll to fall easily, but it seems they are tougher than he thought.
-Well, then, let's do it the hard way.
Flurry, primary target Gnoll #6, if deceased, then the other one who's not colorsprayed.
Flurry of Arrows, shot #1 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Damage if successful #1 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

Edit: facepalm
Kilarra Norgorkin |
Can I assume since you said nothing about it that I do not see others that may suddenly rush to the aid of these guys we are attacking nearby?
Seeing arrows whiz past her opponent and assuming they are meant for another target Kilarra attempts to finish off the one in front of her.
If the target is unconscious then I would like to take a full-round action to perform a Coup De Grace and a 5 foot shift towards the next closest enemy. If that is not the case then....

Round 1
Rukn hurries to finish off the gnoll, but in his hurry and the excitement of the situation, his arrows miss.
Kilarra stabs a dagger in under the gnoll's still-sluggish defenses, and the a quiet cry the creature slips slowly to the ground, a spreading stain of red pooling around it. (Gnoll #6: 3 damage.)
Alexander snarls words of power and a now-familiar spray of color issues forth from his hands washing over the captive and the three remaining gnolls around him. All three of the gnolls slump to the ground, unconscious. (Unconscious for 2d4 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5 rounds.)
As gnoll #3 collapses, another of Solomon's glowing darts slams into it, ending its miserable life.
Blinded, confused, utterly overwhelmed, and hearing their fellows dying and falling, the two conscious gnolls attempt to flee from their doom.
Gnoll #1 sprints due east, slamming into a small bit of wall and cartwheeling over it. (Gnoll #1: 6 damage.)
Gnoll #4 sprints directly at Zhalet and Rukn. Rukn and Zhalet, you can choose to let him go by, or let him crash into you. There is a slight downhill behind you that he will encounter if you let him go by, or if you choose to obstruct his path, you may all be knocked prone. Neither of you can have an AoO since neither of you are wielding a melee weapon at the time the gnolls run.

Zhalet Soroush |
When she sees all the other gnolls collapse and the two blinded gnolls begin to flee, one of them directly at her, Zhalet sees a possibility for a clean sweep rather than just a rescue.
She continues running at the gnoll approaching her and throws a full body block at him.
The idea here isn't to grapple or anything, it's just to get him off his feet even if the same happens to Zhalet

Rukn ed-Din |
Improved Unarmed Strike = My Body Is My Weapon = Bruce Lee In Da Houze (and I can even deal non-lethal!). Please correct me if I'm wrong - if I'm not, I will deliver a non-lethal AoO
As the gnoll passes near him, Rukn lets his knee go by and strikes the gnoll's leg.

Kilarra Norgorkin |
Kilarra Charges after the Gnoll that slammed into the wall not wanting any survivors to warn of their presence just yet.
If I am able to charge attack the blind one that took 6 damage then I do as below. If not I take a full run to get into melee so I can at least have a AoO later

Zhalet sets herself and rams her shoulder into the charging gnoll. Not only does the gnoll not bowl her over, it bounces off and lands on its backside in the dust while Zhalet keeps her feet with a swift and graceful motion.
As the gnoll passes near to Rukn, he lands a well aimed knee into the large muscles of its thigh, adding to the swiftness with which it tumbless to the ground at Zhalet's feet.

Erizi the Landless |
If he can reach, Erizi charges whichever gnoll he can reach with a charge. If he thinks he can reach any closer to the outpost he'll go there, knowing that cutting off escape routes is a wise course of action. If not he'll just sprint in that direction to serve the same purpose, then pursue the one trying to escape.
Sorry if I sound a little confused... I am :-)

MisterLurch |
I think I forgot to include prone in the list of conditions for gnoll #1. Gnoll #1 tripped of the ruined wall and fell to the ground on the other side.
Round 2
Rukn lays an arrow on his bow, then waits for a clean shot at gnoll #1.
Kilarra chases after gnoll #1, moving around it to cut off escape.
Alexander calmly moves to gnoll #2 and drives his sword into its chest. The perfect thrust pierces the gnolls heart and it dies, never waking.
Shaking their heads and their eyes finally clearing of the blinding glitter, the two conscious gnolls struggle to their feet in a panic. Kilarra takes advantage of the weakness in its defenses and stabs it mercilessly as it rises. As soon as gnoll #1 reaches its feet, Rukn finishes his attack; one of the arrows slam into the creature, and one misses. (Gnoll #1: 17 damage.)
Kilarra, I am just using the attack you rolled up above for your AoO (-2 for not charging).
Zhalet, you may make an AoO agains #4 as it rises.
Gnoll #4 continues to flee to the southwest. Zhalet gives chase and cuts deeply into the thing with her scimitar. (Gnoll #4 10 damage.)

Alexander Pierpoint |
His mouth twisting with distaste, Alexander brings out his rope and starts to truss up the unconscious Gnoll. He pays attention to its mouth as well as its limbs, and tries to make sure any pulling on the bonds will... deeply inconvenience the creature.
Rukn ed-Din |
Seeing that the eastern battle is controlled, with Alexander taking care of the unconscious gnoll for later interrogation, Rukn turns his attention to helping Zhalet.

Rukn runs to Zhalet's side and helps her deal with the corpse so as to not alert the rest of the gnolls by finding it.

Gnoll #6: Dead
Combat is over!
You have one unconscious gnoll which Alexander is tying quite securely, five gnoll corpses, and one unconscious, stunned, and blinded naked human man.
What do you do now?
Alexander Pierpoint |
"Zhalet, get that man back on his feet if you can," Alexander growls as he doubles the knots on the Gnoll's restraints. "Erizi, tie this scavenger up as well - and then pick him up. I can't lift such a heavy beast!"
Solomon Azar |
Solomon tends to the man on the ground, digging into his healing kit for melling salts and wafting them under the man's nose.
Healing (assess condition): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
MisterLurch |
Will Save DC 16: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18.
He is obviously injured from long days of callous treatment, perhaps torture, and is also dehydrated and malnourished.
With the assistance of the smelling salts, the man comes around, blinking his eyes in the bright sunlight. He thrashes agains his bonds, then becomes calmer once he sees that he is surrounded by dead gnolls and those who are not gnolls. He keeps his voice low when he speaks, showing considerable tactical awareness, and his voice is rough with pain, "Ye couldna've come at a better time, an' I thank ye. I'm guessin' by the corpses that ye're no friend t'tha Kulldis scum?"
Rukn ed-Din |
Rukn is dragging some of the gnolls' bodies.
-Uhm... I think we should hide these corpses. From what Alexander said, if we keep the others from noticing, they might take a while to realise some of their friends are missing.
Solomon Azar |
Solomon reached out and laid a hand on Alexander's arm, letting Sarenrae's grace flow to his wounds.
"Well done, Alexander. Your magics won the day today."
Assisting the newly-freed captive to his feet he gestured to Rukn. "He's right. If you're strong enough to move, we can talk once we're out of the open."
Solomon Azar |
I thought your HP showed that you'd taken damage, and you described yourself as limping, so I thought I'd missed a post where you'd been hurt. Retcon spell casting then.
Kilarra Norgorkin |
...and you described yourself as limping...
He has been limping for sometime now. I am pretty sure it is a clever and well thought out character 'flaw' that helps to reflect his age and experience while also adding to his generally somber personality.
Uhm... I think we should hide these corpses. From what Alexander said, if we keep the others from noticing, they might take a while to realise some of their friends are missing
"I agree but we do not want to get caught out in the open" Kilarra looks & listens carefully to see if anyone or anything seems to have been attracted to the commotion.

Solomon wrote:...and you described yourself as limping...He has been limping for sometime now. I am pretty sure it is a clever and well thought out character 'flaw' that helps to reflect his age and experience while also adding to his generally somber personality.
Yup! ^_^ All very true -- and it also gives Alexander a reason to walk around with a (sword)cane.
Erizi the Landless |
Erizi is excited at the coming combat. He rushes to cut off their retreat, then rushes to each melee eager to become involved. He sighs in exasperation as the last Gnoll is accounted for. His muscles ache from drawing back his massive hammer to swing, then noticing it's not needed. Finally he joins the others around the captive, breathing harder than normal after a combat.
I have never ran so much in a battle without swinging a blow. Truly this group of allies is powerful.
Erizi joins the others quiet... as he catches his breath... as usual, and helps with the heavy hauling.
MisterLurch |
No evidence of any other patrol is at hand, and some of you can take time to conceal the dead bodies. The blood is a little harder to hide, but the sun and the dry earth will make short work of it.
Group Survival: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26.
Once the work is done and the ground given a thorough once-over, there is very little trace that a battle was fought here.
The gnoll, once it recovers from the spell, struggles against its bond until a high-pitched, muffled yelp issues from it and it subsides with wide eyes.
The man, with a little help, climbs back to his feet. He is moving gingerly with obvious discomfort, but seems to be not overly interested in lingering in the area. He introduces himself as Andrus, but begs leave to give a full accounting of who he is until such time as you are all in a more secure situation. While the bodies are dealt with, he uses the time to fashion ragged foot coverings and breechcloth, and swings what is left of a very tattered cloak across his shoulders. If it were clean it might be a very rich red, and the fine cloak pin he uses to hold it shut argues for a degree of affluence if not competence before he fell into the clutches of the gnolls of Kelmarane.
MisterLurch |
Assuming that you intend to take your captive and refugee back to the monastery...
A few more hours travel back through the Pesh field and the foothills around it finds you back at the monastery. There several of the mercenaries, who had been a rather surly lot towards you all, have a very different demeanor. Clearly by their words they had been able to perceive enough of what was happening in Kelmarane to know that you stopped them from having to impotently witness the torture and murder of this man.
Lady Almah congratulates you on your flawless victory and on your captive. She offers her services in Questioning the captive, claiming to have no small experience in the matter and promising to share what she discovers.
MisterLurch |
Andrus answers your questions willingly.
He led an adventuring party called the Lions of Senara (his cloak pin is a gold lion’s head likely worth 15 gp). The Lions came to Kelmarane about a week ago following tales of treasure in the ruined church of Sarenrae, but they soon fell victim to the gnolls. They’ve been beaten and tortured every say since, and only a few members remain.
He does mention that one of the Lions, an old bard called Felliped, escaped several days ago, and since none of the gnolls have come to gloat over his murder, he has reason to hope that Felliped might yet live.
He does not have much information about Kelmarane as they were all captured rather quickly, but what he does know he shares freely.
Do you take Lady Almah up on her offer to put the gnoll to the Question?
Zhalet Soroush |
After the gnoll is down, Zhalet trots backs to to the main group. She provides Andrus with some food and water, and helps him ready himself to leave.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
The gnolls are rather large so she's not much help in moving them, but she does use Prestidigitation liberally to help cover the blood and other signs of combat.
Whoa, a bit past tense now! :p
Alexander Pierpoint |
"I shall assist you," Alexander tells Lady Almah in a deathly voice.
The old man acted oddly during the trip back to the monastery. Barely interested in Andrus, his full attention was on the Gnoll, his pale eyes staring into its eyes whenever possible.
That, and at every rest stop, he kept sharpening his cold iron dagger.
Now, he is fondling the weapon again -- while staring at the captive with a kind of dynamic stillness to him.
Rather like a dark stork, waiting for prey to move before it lunges and spears it for lunch... and then he snarls in the Gnoll tongue.
Zhalet Soroush |
"If more of Andrus's companions are still alive, we should make it our priority to rescue them."
Zhalet does wonder what methods exactly Lady Almah has in mind...
Zhalet asks Andrus if he could describe where his companions are being held in Kelmarane.
Kilarra Norgorkin |
Do you take Lady Almah up on her offer to put the gnoll to the Question?
I see no reason not to. Assuming there are no objections...
Looking to Lady Almah, "I appreciate you taking the time. In addition to what the gnoll knows I am also interested in knowing a few thing from Andrus. For comparitive purposes I would like to know what you know about disposition and strength of forces, what it is they discovered in town or the church they were headed for, location of remaining captives and by what means did the gnolls manage to defeat them."
