I was tempted to try and tie the vote at the last minute as well, thinking how much it would suck to have this game end after round 1. I was also worried that such an attempt would backfire, and as Dash said, Mafia is brutal. Hopefully they stick around and enjoy the rest of the game and if someone starts another after this one ends they jumps back in.

Yeah, losing a Geneticist in round one will certainly make it much tougher.

Having read through every previous mafia style game I could find, I liked the restrictions on PMing as it certainly appeared to swing the balance of the game severely. Now that I am playing in a game, it really sucks not being able to PM.

Female Helmet Cat

The next I run will probably be balanced for PMs, but this one needed to not have them for balance and theming. I know it is rough to not have them, but you will all be okay!

Actually, scratch that. Your probabilities of demise are pretty high.

The Exchange

I played in a bunch of the games and they all have differences, but it is likely if you play in enough you will get a variety of roles and outcomes.

So don't get discouraged!

Human Eccentric Highland Toff / Lvl 20

I don't think I did much PMing in the first one, but for that second game I played in, man it was non stop.

Secret back room deals, betrayals, sowing distrust while gathering support...ahhhhh. Good times. ;D

Good lord, all my post seam to be half hour long speeches. If I keep this up I am going to vote for me just to shut me up!!!

Female Helmet Cat

I am extending the deadline for round 1 to Monday, for reasons that I cannot disclose. I think I will keep the rounds weekly, for the sake of everyone having access to their peak posting times.

Please remember to vote early and vote often.

Thanks, it's post games evening & my slightly inebriated state might've been detrimental to solid gameplay :P

We are carefully monitoring the oxygen supply....

I'm determined to keep the ball rolling no matter how much I have to interfere with your backstories. :D

Commitment: 1 post/day

Meows, thanks for the extension! I was trying to cook dinner, and ran to my computer at 2 minutes to deadline. I was very grateful to able to go back and eat. And yesterday was just bad. Catching up.

Female Helmet Cat

Question: Can you change your secret votes (for scan, attack, or protect actions)?

Answer: Yes, you can change any of your votes at any time before round's end. Because there are no retaliatory roles, it is always better for your team to use your power than not, so sending the targets early and then switching them later as information changes is a good approach.

@GM Meows: Dash just said something in gameplay which makes me wonder if he's confused about the way creatures kill. Since I'd rather not misquote you, are you able to clarify that for him?

@Dash: If you do understand clearly, and you're just having Dash be super paranoid and clueless, that's fine of course. ;-)

Female Helmet Cat

Question: How many kills do the creatures get per round?

Answer: One kill, via secret vote. The kill target is randomly selected between all vote targets with the highest vote count.

Male Human Security specialist 0

It could be the character. It could be the player!

Good luck, guys! I look forward to watching an Earth overrun with the Thing very soon!

Cookie Jar Pilferer 9 ; Dimensional Explorer 4

Sorry to see you go, pinvendor.

The Exchange

This is crazy, I do not ever recall such an outcome in round one and two in either groups favor....

Meowselsworth, you might have to run another one for us! : )

In Doug's game, the special Nobles had crazy good fortune finding one another right after the first round results. It was a great, fun RP game, but the Assassins would have been hard-pressed to win, even without the Lovers role and it happening to devolve on the Head Assassin. The combined specials - detective and two bodyguards - were tough to take down.

Playing this has actually peaked my interest in running another Mafia/Werewolf/Assassin PBP. Following this I'd happily run an Ultimate Werewolf (Delux Edition) game modified for PBP if there is enough interest. The rules are slightly different, but I could see it being a ton of fun.

I'd be up for a DougyFungus game or another Meowselsworth. Ultimate Werewolf sounds awesome!

But if Doug ran, Meows would play, and Meows is brilliant, swift, ruthless, and terrifying.

Female Helmet Cat

I usually like moderating more than playing. I get pretty obsessed when I'm playing. But I'd be willing to play in one that you moderate, Doug.

If I run a following one, it will probably be a lighter tone and balanced around PMs being possible. I've played Ultimate Werewolf (Deluxe) in a real life game a number of times, and it can be pretty interesting with some of the roles.

So lynch him first. :-)

But she's so much fun! Typical cat - so adorable that you can't help but forgive them as they gnaw your face off.

The Exchange

I recall really enjoying a bunch of them. Eventually though I needed a break because the characters and games were running together for me....

I don't even know how many more went through.

Sorry have not been active this week, dealing with Dr. Appointments. Plus leaving for MN tomorrow morning to attend step-daughters wedding so not sure will be active over the weekend.

I don't think I actually dotted this before. Whoops. :P

Hey Meows, What are the win conditions for this game? Can the bad guys win by having the same numbers as the good guys or does one side need to completely eliminate the other?

M somewhat akin to a kender Y / MA

Pretty sure that once the number of monsters is equal to regular roles the monsters win by straight out attack....

Conversely the monsters must all be eliminated...

I could be wrong though...

Female Helmet Cat

Question: What are the win conditions?

Answer: The research staff wins the game once all the creatures are eliminated. The creatures win the game once they are in equal number to any amount of creatures who know about each other.

If there are 3 creatures A, B and C, and 3 townies, and A, B and C know each other, then it is a creature victory.

If A and B know each other, but don't know C, then it is not yet a creature victory.

If A and B know each other, but don't know C, but there is only 2 townies left, the creatures win.

The strategy gets kind of weird when it gets to the second example, but there are ways in that situation to get the town back into being the majority.

I'd guess the second way/strategy would be for the townies to vote for A (or B) & the creatures to try and tie it up by voting for C (accidentally - or by townie manipulation).

Bartender

Does the round end tonight?

Female Helmet Cat

The round will end Monday night. I decided to make it weekly so that everyone has access to their peak posting hours.

Good Game :D

Bartender

Guys, just a heads up. I'll be leaving on vacation early Sat morning. I may not be able to post Friday. Internet access will likely be impossible until I return on Sunday, the 28th.

I too am heading out of town Friday- Monday, however I should still have Internet access. Just giving a heads up in case I actually don't.

I'll be in town with full internet access...but seeing as I'm dead, you still won't see any posts from me. :P

The Exchange

We still need you.

I did it all for the penguins.

You can haunt us.

Female Helmet Cat

I have thought about a duel mechanic before in these, where a character can lay their life on the line in a souped up accusation. Could be neat.

In pbp format, though, unless the game is huge like Deathmatch was, it is usually better to mechanically allow more drawn out killing, to better savour the murder.

But who knows, maybe one of these ones it will be viable!

Human Eccentric Highland Toff / Lvl 20

I was more so suggesting that the execution would be by one of them killing the other. So the vote would happen then you would have one of our characters kill the other in a duel. Does that make sense?

Female Helmet Cat

Yeah, that's what I figured, but I was just remarking on how it would be neat to actually have the mechanic! It's something I thought about in Deathmatch.

But yes, whichever one of you dies (if either one of you does) it will be as the result of the duel.

Cookie Jar Pilferer 9 ; Dimensional Explorer 4

I just figured out your last post Meows. Jimmy's down for a duel.

Stump-o-matic thanks for the opportunity to explain the cat-bagging. Treppa gave me one earlier but the flow wasn't quite there.

Shakes fist at Dash & Red Robert

I really thought I was starting to figure it out, but Red Robert & Duke Leto are supposed to be the roommates!!! Now I am completely lost and do not have any idea who is who.

Walks away grumbling to himself

That's the fun part if people are putting out subtle cues and hints, they can't be too obvious to the creatures, so at the end of the day you don't know for sure.....ever...

I was just going to make a post when I saw that, now I don't know what to do either. A bold statement like that makes for tough game play.

Does anybody have a living player count with roles and names? I just don't have the time to assemble one right now.

Male Human Security specialist 0

It's in gameplay posted by DM.

Currently

Round 4 role breakdown:
3 civilians
2 roommates
1 combat-trained
1 creature
1 creature geneticist

If we knew the names of the roles than it wouldn't be much of a game. :)

I meant a list of the remaining players. Not what role we know or suspect thsy are.

DougFungus
Dash
Duke
Sven
Alexander
Robert
Mike
Jimmy

Have i missed anybody?

Female Helmet Cat

On the campaign tab I believe the list of the living and fallen is current.
