This is for Discussion of "Who Goes There?" Do not use this thread for strategy or to try and convince anyone of anything.
If you ask me a question in PM, I will answer that question in this discussion thread so that everyone is playing with the same information on how the roles work.
Since no roles will be posted until the end of Round 0, you can just ask in Discussion too. Since you don't know what role you're going to get, any questions you ask are not going to give anything away.

In game investigation pretty much yields what other players are willing to give you, which generally is going to be not much because nobody can trust anyone. Most of the game is social, the mechanical bits only really occur infrequently and at the end of rounds.
As for the recording, I will put it down in writing at the beginning of Round 1, but ultimately it will be the reason that you know the general composition of who is present but no names.

Question on Combat trained: Does the protected person or mafia find out who you are if you stop an attack? Obviously the mafia must know that the attack was thwarted. Does the protected know they were attacked and protected?
Mafia: Are they free to communicate with each other or is it a blind ballot? If so, would ties result in no attacks?
Meowselsworth |
Good questions!
Neither the person protected nor the mafia find out who you are if you stop an attack. Any mafia members who targeted the person will find out that their attack is thwarted, but not by who.
If there is a tie between mafia members targeting, then the target will be chosen randomly out of those who received the most votes.
Mafia is not free to communicate with each other, until the following condition is met: If a mafia member is chosen as a target of assassination, the assassination attempt fails. Instead, all mafia involved in the attack become aware of each others' identities.
If A, B and C are mafia, they cannot communicate. If A and B target C, A, B and C become able to communicate. If A targets B, B targets a townie and C targets a townie, but A's target wins the random roll, then A and B discover each other. C is left alone in the cold.

Does anyone have a preference between weekly rounds, or semi-weekly rounds? Either is fine for me, with a preference for weekly rounds to make sure that everyone has a chance to post according to their preferred schedule, and if nobody votes otherwise, that will be the schedule.
If anyone wants to have a death speech in the case of lynching, you can PM it to me, so that you don't accidentally blow your cover by posting it too early, and I'll make sure you get your proper sendoff.

All roles are assigned. If you did not receive a role, send me a PM and I will correct that because it means that I've screwed up.
The only characters who can communicate outside of the game for strategy purposes are the roommates.
If you do not post at least once per round, you will be disqualified.
I will be opening round 1 shortly.
Meowselsworth |
Question: What is the roommate role's powers?
Answer: The roommates are the only characters who can communicate with one another using PMs. In addition, each roommate is aware that the other is not a creature due to their (annoying) mannerisms. This is a strong role for creating strategies within a low-communication game, but it's up to you to determine how to use it.

Question: How does the creature geneticist work?
Answer:
The creature geneticist does the following.
1. Like any member of the group, the creature geneticist has one public vote, which counts the same as all votes. If the town vote ties, there is no kill.
2. Like any creature, the creature geneticist will PM me during the round to vote for the creature kill. If the creature vote ties, the kill is chosen randomly from the targets. If the target is another creature, all creatures targeting that creature become able to PM it. If A and B can PM each other, and B and C can PM each other, then A and C may PM each other.
3. The creature geneticist can scan, like the geneticist. This is a 75% chance of being successful. If it is unsuccessful, I will choose the apparent result randomly out of all living active roles (including the role of the targeted person). The creature geneticist may not PM another creature that is found this way, because there is a chance that it is a false positive.
Meowselsworth |
Question: What would happen if combat trained protected a creature who is targeted by other creatures?
Answer: The protection will turn up blank and the creatures will discover each other. That means if combat trained gets a notification that their protection was successful, the individual protected is a member of the civilian team, giving combat trained some information gathering power.
Meowselsworth |
Question: Can my votes be conditional? (A -> I vote one way, ~A -> I vote another way.)
Answer: In the public vote, no. That becomes very complicated very fast and can be abused by crafty players to perpetually tie up the votes.
In the private vote, sort of... if you are a special role with a target power, I will allow you to have a backup in case your target is lynched, recognizing that the tides can turn very fast, and not everyone can always PM a vote change. Also, normally these kinds of games have the 'day' and 'night' cycle, but because of the format, it would be boring to wait a posting day on night cycle. This rule just imitates the normal cycle order.
No other conditions are accepted, so if you PM me, "If Marco says 'puppy', I will target him, otherwise I will target Meowselsworth," I will just ignore it and your target will be wasted.
(If anyone wishes to contest any of my rulings, feel free to send me PMs or mention it in discussion)
Meowselsworth |
Question: Can information be passed on after death, via sealed note?
Answer: No. You cannot pass information after death. You could leave a spoilered post, but people could choose to peek
. The only exception is that you can PM me a death speech if you think you are likely to be lynched, which I will post during the end of round results, but that must still be sent to me before the results of the lynch.
Meowselsworth |
Question: How do you resolve creature kill votes in case of a tie?
Answer: Regardless of whether a creature or townie receives a vote or whether a protected townie is targeted, I weigh the probability equally and then determine the result randomly.
Suppose three people are targeted, A, B and C. A is a creature. B is a civilian. C is a protected civilian.
I would roll 1d3. If it is 1, I resolve as if A was majority target. If it is 2, I resolve as if B is majority target. If it is 3, I resolve as if C is majority target. I will always roll first and then check role interactions second.
Meowselsworth |
Question: When does the geneticist power resolve?
Answer: The special role powers resolve in the following order during round end. Combat trained, creature, geneticist (this includes the creature geneticist scan). If combat trained successfully protects, the creature and combat trained receive a message if there is a successful protection. The content of this message is just that a protection took place, and no role or identity information is revealed.
Edit: the lynch occurs before any special powers are resolved, which is why special roles who can target can have a backup target. They technically target after the lynch.

I really wanted to like haggis, it being an ethnic dish and all, but when my grandparents brought some back from the Old Country... bluh. Couldn't handle it.
Good luck with the Black Pudding.
Russ Curtis |
Tried to get this posted before the deadline, but Paizo took its sweet time, and I was twenty-two seconds too late. :-/
Russ waves his hand and shuts down the log.
"This ain't helping. All I see is a lot of paranoia. We're all stuck here together, ain't we? Maybe if we just don't sleep then we all don't have nothing to worry about. But aside from the that, maybe we should all have one vote on our heads just to have a show of not being completely blameless."
Russ votes Alexander...for no reason really.

EvOil's stock will never recover.
Thank you for playing Doctor Wilkens! I am sorry that you eliminated in the 1st round, it's always hard saying goodbye to a character so early.
The meals around here will never be the same.
Same to you, Elora. Losing a geneticist in round 1 can be really hard for the town, but I'm sure they'll be able to avenge you.
Thanks for playing, Leo and Bombadil, and I hope you stick around to see how this plays out! I'm happy to disclose any information to either one of you via PM, so long as you swear yourselves to secrecy.
