After completing his transaction with the farmer, Brickasnurd stands behind Illiam watching him manipulating the magical device. Hmmmm, I'm not sure I even knew that could do that. Come to think of it, He says, I'm not even sure I remember where I got that little device. Then Illiam watches as Brickasnurd cast's detect magic on the anytool, and concentrates on it for a minute. Awfully useful in a lot places that little thing. He finally says after his examination is complete. If you want it, I could probably let it go for two-hundred and thirty-five gold pieces, since you're a friend. He smiles a warm and welcoming smile. Then leans in and whispers overtly surreptitiously, we little folk have to look out for one another. He says and nudges Illiam's rib cage with his elbow, ever so slightly.

After listening to Baradim's additional comments about justice, and not keeping someone whose own accuser has admitted he may have been wrong, Vamros wiggles his ears a bit, and his cheeks get flushed for just a moment. He twirls his quill around in his fingers deftly, and then begins to write something on his large scroll of parchment. Fine. I don't see why letting her out is any problem. She's hardly a flight risk. I'll release Laurel Usessa into your care Baradim. If any illegal activity is proved about her, you'll suffer the consequences as well. Immediately Magistrate Harg picks up and slams down his gavel, looks at his fashionably dressed dwarf bailiff and says, Release Laurel, and bring in the next case.

Within minutes Chillel, Goruck, and Baradim are standing back outside in the gorgeous summer sun on the outskirts of the low-market. Laurel looks a bit the worse for wear, but it's clear she was treated kindly, for a prisoner.

Thank you so much! Laurel says, almost in tears, hugging Baradim, Goruck, and Chillel each in turn. Gavel Kreed's complaint against me was so ridiculous, some of the customers in my shop starting arguing with the guards that came for me, and they got beaten up for their loyalty. She says with zero care for who might be listening, even though you all stand just outside the Tribunal and just on the edge of a crowded market. Then she leans in to Baradim's ear, though, and whispers, I would feel not the least bit sad if I woke up one day and somebody told me Gavel Thuldrin Kreed was dead. She runs her fingers through her slightly greasy and disheveled hair, trying, vainly to smooth and straighten it, and then says, Of course then Payden would just take over and we'd lose one idiot just to replace him with another. Ahhhh. She sighs heavily. That seems to be the way of the world doesn't it?

Freezing at the woman's embrace, Goruck awkwardly pats her back in return. As she hugs Chillel the swordsman quietly asks, "Would you like to see the people you helped cure?" It's not much but perhaps it would soothe her to see something positive did come from this fiasco. Her words on the Vale's leadership brings a shake of the massive half orc's head. "The world is more than poor leaders. There are plenty of people like yourself willing to give all they have for the progress of good. That is something to be celebrated and cherished."

Thank you Magistrate Harg.says Chillel with a bow. However, she thinks Shouldn't she just be released? The complaint has no basis and even Kreed says that, and why should Baradim be responsible for anything? At least she is out.

When Laurel is released she hugs her warmly, replying to her whispered intimation I think if Thuldrin Kreed were to suffer a fatal accident Payden is likely to as well. Just a feeling I have.

Illiam returns the rod to its straight form and looks down its length, as if evaluating its straightness, before replying. That seems a fair price. Illiam nods in agreement. I spotted some other interesting auras I'd like to check out as well, before I make a purchase, but there's another item I wanted to ask about. Illiam turns his head a bit to make sure nobody else is near, masking the motion as he takes half a step closer to the gnome shopkeep. Illiam speaks in a lowered voice. At Droskar's Crucible, there was a door we couldn't unlock. I found evidence of a threat that could have attacked us from behind, but we couldn't unlock the door to clear the room. I've heard of keys that can open many different locks. Do you know where I could find something like that, to be prepared for next time?

Brickasnurd leans in conspiratorially, smiling wide enjoying the secrecy of their shared conversation. He whispers, You mean a skeleton key? Yeah, I might have one of those, but if I did, I couldn't just keep it out here in the store front. He points to the door to his back room, and says, again in a whisper, saunter around a bit, and then slip your way into that back room. I'll meet you back there once I take care of the rest of these customers.

After meandering about for a bit Illiam does indeed slip Stealth: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (9) + 13 = 22 into Brickasnurds adjacent back room, passing behind the thick curtain that hangs as a doorway. Once in the back room, Illiam is very surprised, not by the range of items that he sees, though a couple look to be magic wands that he did not detect while looking before. No, instead the shock of this back room is that it is very organized. Everything is arranged neatly, has been recently dusted, and some things are even labeled with small paper labels. The skeleton key he wanted, is one such. Sitting on a shelf with other sets of tools, some of which look distinctly like the tools of a thief, the key sits with a small string attached to a tiny square of paper labeled, very clearly in common script, skeleton key.

Laurel laughs aloud at Chillel's intimation about Payden and Kreed suffering similar fates, a good, hearty bellowing laugh. She smiles and says, Thank you Chillel, I needed that. Then turning to Goruck, with water welling in her eyes, she says, Yes, Goruck, I would very much like to see some of those the cure has helped. I've wanted to see nothing more ever since you all arrived from Almas. Please, lead on. With that she reaches a hand down and tries, unsuccessfully to flatten out her wrinkled clothing, no doubt she's been sleeping in it for the past few days. Realizing it is no good she lets out a soft harumph! but follows as Goruck, Baradim, and Chillel lead her down the street.

Thanks Dolok! Farmer Gavrus says, and gives him a handful of coppers for his work. And don't worry, I'll remember to keep it sharp. Tell your master, we've all been saying our prayers for him. Hope your healer friend there gets him back up and around soon. As farmer Gavrus takes his newly sharpened scythe and walks away he calls back, Take care! then disappears around the palisade wall.

Kairon's examination of Master Figueroa shows that the master smith is well on the mend, one more day of rest should have him right as rain, and the master is a bit impatient to get back to his work. He bristles a bit at being told to stay in bed, having never been a man to sit idle for so long, but realizing how close he came to death, his age provides the wisdom necessary to know he needs to do what Kairon says. So, reluctantly he stays in bed.

Chillel looks somewhat confused at Laurel's reaction to her whispered comment. She stands still until the others start moving, then as she moves to follow, says I wasn't joking. Baradim listens carefully to the words that the magistrate says, arching one eyebrow when he makes the mention that he would be held liable for Laurel's conduct and if she was found guilty.

"If she is found to have -actual- evidence against her, I will be the first one to help track her down and bring her back. Otherwise, there should be a great apology given to the one who had the cure to save this town."

The sun felt refreshing upon his skin as Laurel finally was released, her hug being returned in a light fashion. He was starting to get comfortable with this close contact and couldn't deny there was a sense of enjoyment in doing what was right. A smile spread across his face as he looked between them all. His mind drifted to Grung, who still survived out in the woods. He could understand the man's dedication to his goal; it was good having a tribe to belong to.

"Let's go to Jak's. It is where we've been creating the tea. So far, it has worked miracles and saved lives. Others are bringing it to the outlying communities."

Brickasnurd, you've been holding out on me. Illiam says, slyly. Having cast Detect Magic before slipping into the back, Illiam examines the wands and any other magic objects that were previously undetected as he reads the labels. He also scans the room itself, and tries to scan for the magic auras that he noticed in the other room, trying to ascertain what, exactly, prevented him from detecting these magic items before.

Scanning the back room of the Goose 'n Gander reveals that Brickasnurd is, indeed, holding out, on more than just Illiam. It becomes apparent very quickly that this entire back room must be protected by a sheet of lead within the walls, and within the fabric of the curtain, as Illiam can detect magical auras within the room, three to be exact, two faint, one moderate, all on wands, but can no longer detect the auras that he witnessed in the main room. Finding the wands magical, Illiam has no need to decipher them, as, just with the skeleton key, they are neatly labeled. One, a long thin piece of very light colored wood, with a jagged and twisting pattern carved into it, is labeled, Call Lightning, a particularly powerful spell usually used by druids and shamans. Another, a thick wand of metal with glittering bits of some yellowish dust apparent throughout, is labeled, Wall of Fire, another powerful spell used by many different casters both arcane and divine. The last a simple baton of steel with zero ornament at all is labeled, Remove Blindness or Deafness. Upon reading the labels, Illiam knows exactly why this room is so "hidden;" any one of these wands is worth a small fortune. The three of them together, if sold in a large market, could set a person up for the rest of their life. Illiam's fingers itch, ever so gently as he realized the wealth that is sitting before him, but his rational mind reminds him that nobody with such wealth ever leaves it wholly unprotected. Clearly there is much more to the unassuming Brickasnurd Hildrinsocks than initially meets the eye.

Speaking of, the wild-haired gnome pushes aside the heavy curtain and steps into the back room next to Illiam, seeing him eyeing the treasures. Those little dandies are left over from my adventuring days. He says with an impish grin, as if that explains everything. I'm doubting you could afford them. Hee hee. He observes and chuckles a bit. The skeleton key, though, that's not such an expensive item, though I'm sure you can understand why I don't want it just out for all to see. Hee hee hee. He laughs at his own conspiracy.

As the group works their way towards Jak's Goruck notices the rather worn and battered state of his armor. A proper warrior must take care of his tools so they may take care of him. These past few days have not been easy, but that's no excuse for now. Master Figueroa's health should be substantial enough to at least allow conversation and instructions on repair.

Turning to his allies, Goruck bows his head. "I'm afraid I must part ways. My armor is not at the condition it should be, and I wish to have it repaired properly. I shall be at Master Figueroa's if you need my aid. " Waiting for his companions response, the swordsman then starts towards the smith's abode.

Taking his time to look through all the wares the blacksmith has available, Kairon manages to find a light shirt of chain links, and sets it to one side. Got to find out about that . . . . Not yet willing to part with his shield, and not finding one made of darkwood in the smith's inventory, he moves on to scour the weapon racks. After a time, the priest notices the distinctive coloration and grain of a darkwood-hafted longspear, and his cry of delight rings off the walls. This is the beauty I was lookin' for!! Ha! He takes up the shirt and the spear, and strides toward Master Figueroa, full of purpose. I'll trade in this here scale mail, and we'll go from there, eh? 'Cause I'll have both o' these, good sir!

Brickasnurd looks Illiam up and down, for a moment, seemingly thinking about or deciding on something. Then he says, I can let you have it for two-hundred and fifteen gold coins. He then leans in again and whispers, and I'll thank you to keep my secrets still secret. He stands back up and winks one bushy eyebrowed eye at his halfling friend.

Master Figueroa makes to get out of bed to do business with Kairon, but the good healer all but pushes him back down into his bed. He stays in bed, but sits up. Ah, she's a beauty that one. He points at the darkwood longspear. She'll treat you right, I know it. He looks at the scalemail that Kairon is trading, and then at the beautifully crafted shirt of linked chain. He smiles, grabs Kairon's hand and says, I guess seventy-five gold crowns and that scalemail should make us just about even then.

GOOD catch, I must have been remembering the cost of one of the other items. Retcon that to 60 gp.

I'll take that and the rod, certainly.

235 + 60 = 295, and Illiam has 492.6gp

The other items I wanted were a stubborn nail (list price: 100gp) and sleeves of many garments (list price: 200gp)

Before we settle up, there were a couple more items I wanted to consider, and unfortunately I don't think I can afford them both at this time. One of them appeared to have the ability to change the appearance of one's clothing, and the other looked like a magical spike that could be used for climbing, which I suspect would also be useful for jamming a door shut if my group needs to make an escape.

The half orc points out some areas on his armor where the scares are either removed or badly mangled. "Our encounter with those tatzlworms did quite a number upon my armor, and with our findings I was hoping I could find a more protective piece." He chuckles slightly. "When you're as large as I am, it's hard to find a proper steel to wrap around yourself."

The master smith smiles knowingly at Kairon and says, and what is a fair price for a person's life young healer? Is it five hundred pieces of gold? A thousand? Two thousand? A million? No, seventy-five pieces of gold is more than enough for what you've given me, to me it's sorrowful even to take that much from you, but somebody is going to have to repair the scales on your old armor before it can be sold! He smiles, laughs and punches Kairon in the arm. Then his expression becomes much more somber, and he looks Kairon deep in his eyes. Let an old smith's conscience rest happily knowing he could, in some small part, return the favor of a life saved.

At the mention of the magical sleeves and magical nail Brickasnurd's eyebrows quaver in what almost looks like an ocean wave from one side of his face to the next. He mumbles for a bit, Hummmm, hrrrmmmmm, hummmmm. His brow furrows, and his lips open and shut as if to say something and then stop. Finally, a resolute calm comes over him and he says, You mean these? and pulls something off of his sleeves. Immediately his garish, loud, brightly colored garments disappear and underneath a beautiful shirt of shimmering chain, supple in its softness appears. His pants, of well crafted sheepskin leather, are plain and brown, but clearly made for travel and adventure. Every moment spent in the secret society of Brickasnurd Hildrinsocks reveals that there is more and more about him unknown to the world. And this, he says and reaches into his pocket, the same pocket that Illiam caught a magical aura emanating from before, revealing a stout piton made of adamantine. You are right to crave such items, as they are useful beyond measure, but to sell them to you, would mean I'd no longer have them... So... price is a particularly tricky issue... The outlandish gnome sits and furrows brow and quivers lip repeatedly humming and mumbling to himself, seemingly deep in thought. hhhhmmmmm, hrrrrrrmmmmm, hummmmm, hrrrrrmmmmm. Finally coming to a decision he puts the sleeves back on himself and his clothes once again appear garish and bright, in keeping with his normal style. I'll let you have the nail for seventy-five, but the sleeves I'll not sell. Not yet anyway, I'll need to find some alternative to them first. He smiles and holds out the nail for Illiam to take.

Illiam is momentarily taken aback. He had seen these magical auras, but somehow had not realized that they were coming from Brickasnurd himself. Recomposing himself, Illiam simply says Certainly. Sounds fair. Illiam begins to count out 370gp.

Before handing the gold over, Illiam looks Brickasnurd in the eye, smiling. And I am going to want to hear those stories.

Kairon regards Figueroa soberly, and then says: Very well, then. I'll go see what Dolok's doing, and we'll get this beat-up scale offa me, and I'll get him the gold. You go on and rest, now. By tomorrow, you should be able to do some light work, and the day after you oughtta be good as new. I'll leave you now. The Dawnflower keep you, sir.

Taking his new armaments, the priest turns to go back into the smithy proper and gently closes the door behind him. Seeing that Goruck has come to acquire new gear as well, he greets the sturdy warrior quietly. I take it Laurel's been turned loose, then, eh? Good. I'd like to go see her soon, see how she is.

Dolok, I've got an exchange and a purchase to make -- gonna get this chain shirt and spear here, and trade in my scale mail. Master Figueroa told me seventy-five for all of it, but I'm gonna do better than that, okay? Work with me here. Kairon unshoulders his pack and begins doffing his scale mail. Once free of its weight, he opens his backpack and begins counting out gold crowns, two at a time. One . . . two . . . three . . . . and so on to seventy-five, till 150 golden coins are on the tabletop. I know these are worth far more than even this count, but I'm no thief. I'll keep paying a bit more at a time till it's better-balanced, okay? . . . And I'm thinking you should have my old spear, if you'd like. He grins wide. Yeah, I'm still on about that. Besides, if you can carry it, we'll have a backup if I get this one broken.

Just to make it as clear as I can: I use the smaller text font frequently in the above post to indicate whispering. Kairon is trying to both honor the smith's words and still be fair, in order to better keep his own conscience clear.

Nodding, Goruck adds, "Yes, and aside from being a bit disheveled, she seems in good condition. Last I was there Baradim and Chillel were taking her to see her work's rewards."

The massive swordman takes note of the cleric's new armaments with a resolute look of approval. Though the amount paid seems off, Goruck assumes the smith gave a reward for the cleric's attention. The world truly does arc towards justice. Goruck turns to Kairon. "How is Master Figueroa's recovery going? I was going to try and talk to him, but I believe I can wait for his body to heal before bothering him about armor."

At the mention of Dolok using a spear the half orc grins. "Being properly armed is never a foolish idea, and with a spear you'll need not be in blade's reach. Though do try not to poke me or Kanga on accident." The half orc chuckles. "I'm quite satisfied with my current array of scars, and a friendly poke is hardly a worthy battle mark."

'Nother day, you'll not know he was ever sick. He's recovering well, and quickly.

I probably shouldn't have bothered him about the chain and spear as I did, but I was keen on spending some o' this gold! I don't think it'll be any harm to speak to him, Goruck, so long as he's awake.

Battle Grid

No, it won't be a problem at all! Master Figueroa's voice comes booming out of his house. Clearly the smith is feeling better enough to drop eaves on the conversations in his forge. Dolok! He calls, show him my attempt at Mountain Pattern armor. It's in the locked east armor case. I bet he'd really like it!

Male NG Half Orc Samurai (Shogun) 1/Kineticist 2 Half Orc | HP: 23/35 Nonlethal:| AC: 21/26 with shield (11 Tch, 20 Fl) | CMB: +7, CMD: 18 | F: +9, R: +6, W: +3 | Init: +3 | Perc: +2, SM: +8 | Speed 30ft (20 in armor | Challenges: 0/1 | Resolve: 4/4 | Burn: 6/6 | DR-Adamantine: 1 | Active conditions: None.

Surprised, Goruck asks, "You have mountain pattern armor?" The large swordman had experienced some of traditional armor during his early years, but he had grow accustom to the stranger foreign gear his order preferred. He had not expecting a blacksmith here of all places to be attempting such craft. Grinning, he calls out to Master Figueroa. "Perhaps after you finish healing you might wish to try your hand at it's companion?"

Turning to Dolok, the half orc asks, "May I? Such armaments remind me of some of the better times of my life."

Clearly this alias is long overdue.

Still hollering from behind his closed house door, apparently under the guise that he is actually still "resting," Master Figueroa calls out. You're lucky, I had a chap go through this way just over a year ago wearing that kind of armor, and being a man that loves the craft, and loves a challenge, I took it upon myself to make some. It's my first attempt mind you, so it's not my best work, but it'll do in a pinch. Then, suddenly the door opens, and a hale looking Figueroa comes out dressed and ready. Before Kairon can say anything he says, don't worry I'll go right back to bed. I just want to see what our warrior friend thinks of my armor. He then goes to the eastern part of the shop and forge and opens a large locking metal armoire. Inside is a beautiful suit of mountain pattern armor, colored in earthy rusty reds, stone-like greys, and accented in steel that shines like silver. Well, what do you think Goruck?

Brickasnurd chuckles at Illiam's statement. Of course, of course. Perhaps again some evening at Jak's place. For now, I'd best get back to the front of my shop, thieves tend to grow courageous when I'm not looking right at them. The busy eyebrowed gnome says, in a way that makes Illiam thing, somehow he might actually be talking about him. Then he moves aside the heavy curtain to this small back storage room going back to the main room of his Goose 'n Gander.

As Chillel, Baradim, and Laurel enter the Jak'n'apes, they see Jak with furrowed brow, looking none too pleased carrying on a conversation with Lady Cirthana at the far end of his bar. As soon as Laurel enters though, Lady Cirthana comes running at them all screaming Laurel's name. Jak hops deftly over the bar, and treads the common room in very few strides. He grabs both Lady Cirthana and Laurel Usessa in a huge hug, almost lifting them off the ground. Laurel! They got you out?! He looks at Chillel and Baradim. Damn miracle workers you lot! He slaps Baradim on the back and offers Chillel a hasty kiss on the cheek. What can't you all do, I wonder? No, on second thought I don't. I know what you can do though, he says and then turns toward his kitchen's half door, Margery! Three hot breakfast plates! After that Jak, Lady C, and Laurel engage in a brief bit of conversation that gets everyone up to speed on what's been happening, the envoy's triumphant return, and how it's been going getting the cure to those that need it. The conversation is only briefly interrupted by young Margery bringing out three plates heaping with cinnamon pancakes, cured ham steaks, and scrambled eggs. As part of that conversation Jak says that Kitani asked that he and Lady Cirthana keep an eye on Kimi while she's heading to the farms in the hills with Caelis and a half-barrel of the cure. Seems Kimi never came home last night, which isn't terribly out of the normal, she spends the night under the stars on occasion, too much of her dad in her, but she almost always checks in with her mom first thing in the morning. Kitani thought maybe it was just because she and Caelis had to get such an early start. Now that half the morning's gone and neither Lady Cirthana or Jak have seen her, they're on the cusp of worrying that something might have happened to her.

How's that for a hook...?

Master smith you may be, but I'm the one most qualified to tell you when it's good for you to be out of bed right now. And right now's not that time. Kairon looks to Dolok for aid. C'mon. Tell him. A healer's work is never done, but I don't want a repeat patient that soon! He looks back to Figueroa and says, stoutly, Hoist ya over m' shoulder and haul ya back t' bed if I gotta!

The whole time, the priest keeps himself between Figueroa and the counted coins on the countertop, trying to keep his payment concealed, silently gesturing at Dolok to shovel the sum out of sight. Not the best time to find out which one of us is the most stubborn . . . .

Chillel looks awkward at being kissed on the cheek by Jakk, but gives him a fleeting hug with one hand to show things are alright. She takes the breakfast, originally out of politeness as she had eaten, but then tucks in as the smell of the food hits her.

She listens as Kimi's absence is discussed, waits until she has swallowed the mouthful of ham she was chewing then replies If Kimi has not appeared by when we have finished eating, we will go and see if we can find her. Hopefully she has just been delayed. Chillel looks at Baradim to see if he concurs.

Would said mountain armor happen to be sized for a certain half orc?

I mean, it's sized medium... You are size medium right? So, yeah, you can wear it. That's where I was headed with that. :)

Ret-con back to Kairon counting out the money.

"You understand I will have to tell my Master about this payment being higher than what he told you don't you? It wouldn't be right for me to withhold this information from him I don't think!"

***************************************************************

Dolok is getting very nervous. He keeps looking back and forth between Master Figueroa, Kairon and Goruck unsure of what to do suddenly. He does not like that his master is not in bed resting, and he is concerned about his master seeing the amount of coins on the countertop as well and how he may react to that.

"Please Master, if the healer says you should still be in bed resting, than you should! You don't want to have a relapse and end up in bed for a longer period do you? Come now. I can show the armor and I will tell you in full detail what he thought of the armor. Maybe he can even come in and sit by your bedside and tell you himself! But you really need to be back in bed!"

Retcon ahead! Running his hand down the armor, the half orc taps one of the many metal pieces. Solid indeed, I can't tell a difference between the mountain armor from the monastery and his own, besides some minor aesthetics. Figueroa does truly great work, especially considering he lacked a piece to examine and copy. Feeling the shoulder and thigh portions of the armor, the young warrior nods his head as a smile creeps onto his face. The weight is right for movement without being so light as to bounce wildly about leaving the body unprotected.

When Kairon and Dolok begin to dispute over the extra crowns, Goruck pulls away from his inspection of the familiar armor. Switching his gaze between them, the half orc pauses before speaking as if gathering his thoughts. "Dolok, just as your master wishes to do right by Kairon, Kairon wishes to do the same in return. We can hardly take advantage of such fine work and pay a beggar's sum." The tattooed swordsman smirks. "'Tis one of the worst parts of working with good men; getting them to accept their proper reward."

Such a fine piece would be well worth the price. Nodding to himself, Goruck states, " Please allow me to give your master my regards while he rests." With that, he strides to Master Figueroa's location. "If this truly was not your best work, men must feel like juggernauts when clad in your masterpieces." Glancing one more at the upturned and mangled scales adorning his current armor, the half orc asks quite fervently, "Would you be willing to part with it?"

Sorry about the lateness of my post, I had some college stuff I had to handle that ate up a rather good chunk of the day.
