Ahead of schedule. More hurray.

Kairon shoulders his way into the parlor with a half-indulgent grin on his face, rolling his eyes just a little at Hildana's crude humor. Baradim. Chillel. Glad you could be here. Sorry for the wait, such as it was. The cleric takes a seat at the table, and those nearby can feel the 'thud' as his gear come to rest on the floor. I'm gonna say my piece as quickly as I can, 'cause I figure I'll have to finally get in more of my prayers so I can do my part. Do any of you have skill with languages? Or divinations that allow you to read what ya normally couldn't? We've got a . . . book . . . more like a wooden anchor . . . here that might have an answer to our problem in it. But it's bigger than my copy of Birth, the healer's journal, and two hymnals from back home, put all together!! Take some digging, it will, to find what we need, if it's there.

Kairon then glances back to Scipio, who is lugging the deadweight lorebook into the room. Drop 'er 'ere, Scipio. And I never did ask -- how many languages are you good with? Dolok? Goruck?

But before that, I got a'nuther question: Chillel, Baradim -- why would Kreed be so interested in getting you two out of town?? Y'all were at the top of his list for help we should get here in town . . . .

"Excuse me! Yes! I'm going in there as well please." As Dolok walks in if the candles are not lit he will walk over & muttering "šviesos" put his finger up to each candle and light them. If the hearth has not been lit he will do the same there.

"As you all can see I have some innate magical ability with fire. I love fire & fire loves me! Fire is the great purger of all things! As far as languages I'm not very useful though. I only know the common tongue & that of Aš or more commonly know as Ignan or the language of fire. If I can be of any help, I'll be glad to! I also have a few other magical abilities that may come in handy as well."

Baradim will nod along with Chillel, the grim humor may be the alleviation they need for such a dire situation. Every day more and more were getting sick and Falcon's Hollow was now in a precarious situation. "Fair enough. It seems we'll be able to take action rather than just watch though..."

He nods as the others begin to enter into the room, smiling politely at each and every one of them as the party began to assemble. When asked what languages he spoke, his eyebrows furrowed and he looked towards the massive book assembled upon the table.

"I speak the tongue of the Orcs and the tongue of the Fair Folk within the woods. Some of you may call it Sylvan. My mentor taught it to me, thought it'd be useful considering who our neighbors are." When asked about why Kreed would wish him to be out of town, the half-orc would lean back and run his hand through the black goatee upon his face.

"Well, I have no particular relationship with the man or his cronies. I avoid them where I can and they avoid me thanks to Kanga's presence. I think his motive may be less malicious than you think, his power comes from the Apsis Consortium. If he fails here, there will be consequences from his superiors. I think he just wasn't gauging the threat as properly as he should've been and doesn't want to lose face with the natives or his employers." Baradim would lean forward again, nodding. "I am one of the best trackers and hunters here within Falcon's Hollow. I know the woods well enough, I can find where we need to go and ensure we don't get lost, and I have been taught some of the blessings and old magic of the Green Faith. Kanga is an able combatant and hunter as well, we work well together and with others."

Dolok, Kairon, greetings. I have no idea why Kreed would want me out of town. Likely he just thinks Baradim and I have skills that can help, ill workers mean lost money.
Chillel taps her ear fairly obviously.
Kairon is right but we should not discuss it here. There may well be something in town behind this illness. It is no secret that we are meeting here and we may be being overheard.
As to languages I speak and read a few. Do you know what tongue or tongues it is written in? Perhaps if I can see the tome...

Not at present, maybe if Illiam starts some shenanigans. In that situation a check would only be necessary if someone/thing was trying to hide from you. Right now, no one/nothing is.

Kimi, I am genuinely sorry, but you are a teenager. I cannot put your life in danger. It is against my moral code. Also, there is the possibility that you leak some of the information. I cannot allow that to happen.
With that Lunarinus pats her on her shoulder and turns away. He calls to Hilda and says:
Hilda, would you please bring everyone some food? Also, make sure you lock that door on your way out.
He winks at her.

Hilda returns to the parlor with a tray of six plates full of honey-glazed ham steaks, smashed potatoes, and hot corn on the cob, as well as a tall tankard of ale for everyone. As she sets the meals down, she takes a look around the room. Well if this isn't a ragtag bunch, I don't know what is. Whatever brought you all together I hope it's good news for the Hollow, not more bad news. As she sets Chillel's plate in front of her, she gives her a quizzical look. You gonna be okay in here after I leave and close the door, honey?! I mean, your uncles have told me you can take care of yourself, but there's five ornery lookin' men sitting around the rest of this table. She pauses for a moment. Then looks directly at Baradim first, then Dolok. Baradim! Dolok! She exclaims and makes sure they're paying attention. If anything happens to this lady here, I'm coming to you two for payback, got it!? Your Valers, and we take care of our own. I don't want to hear that one feather on Athena's lovely mug got ruffled, ya hear?

The aged barmaid doesn't wait for a reply, just heads out the door, but not before scratching one hand across the top of Kanga's head as she rests by the hearth, and shooting Lunarinus a dirty wink, adding, you need anything sugar-britches, and I do mean anything, you just give a holler. With that she closes the parlor door leaving the group to their discussions. A short second after she shuts the door, you hear the satisfying click of her key clicking in the lock.

"Didn't really take you as a damsel in distress, m'lady." The sarcasm and teasing is dripping from the half-orc's words. His teasing soon ends though as Kairon calls for them to gather and examine the book. He sits up from where he was, stepping over and looking over the book with a careful eye. "Looks old..." "Well I can certainly tell if the book is magical or not. Allow me please."

Chillel bows theatrically to Dolok.

My gentleman protector. Times are perilous and Hildana's concern is easily understood, or perhaps she thinks it unfair I have you all to myself.

I have some arcane skills gifted to me by the spirits of the storm and cold and reflect the spirits that granted them. And I have some knowledge of the area and have been to the woods, though Baradim is doubtless a better guide.

Chillel waits her turn to inspect the book.

Casts read magic on the off chance it may help.

The witch starts turning pages looking for anything magical or in a language she comprehends.

Y'know, I ain't gonna be much help with the reading part, people, Kairon declares after flipping a few pages. I need to go get some serious prayer time in before I catch a sunburn on my nethers. Be back in a while. He pushes himself back from the table, and drags his pack to lean against the wall. With a little effort, he breaks his shield loose from the pack and secures it to his shoulder, ready to be drawn if needed. Sorry to cut out so soon, but all them squiggles is getting m'eyes crossed. In a couple of steps, Kairon stops at the door and proceeds to knock steadily.

Battle Grid

Forgot to add this from earlier.

Kimi stalks off mumbling under her breath when Lunarinus kindly, but firmly makes her aware that she will not be part of the party that is seeking to find a cure.

Illiam, you'll need a sleight of hand check to grab the key. Remember that you not only have to beat a DC 20, you are also being opposed by Hildana's Perception. If her perception beats your roll, whether you successfully grab the key or not, she notices you doing it. I'll let you know right now, that if she notices you trying to take her key, there will be swift consequences, so I hope the dice algorithm does you a favor, or me a disfavor, as the case may be. Also, just so everyone is aware I am using the "Barmaid" entry in the NPC Codex for Hildana's stats.

Secret GM Rolls:

Hildana's Perception Check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

Edit: Sorry Illiam, clearly my dice algorithm is not mad at me...

As Dolok searches for magic the only thing in the room that pings his magical sense is something in Kairon's pack. The book is not magical in nature. Likewise as Chillel casts read magic and the first few pages are flipped she does not see any arcane writing. Baradim's quick look for hidden messages bears no fruit, and so the group lazily eats and continues to flip through the book.

If you haven't already read my lengthy entry in the discussion thread for how to tackle searching the book.

Edit #2:Kairon, I'm going to wait and see what happens with Hildana and Illiam before I address your desire to leave the room, because what happens between them will undoubtedly affect her time/circumstances in getting to the door.

Hearing Kairon's knock, Illiam pulls his hand back just short of Hilda's pocket. Hope it's ok for him to reconsider at this point. I did say that he was looking for an opportunity, not that he was doing it. If she noticed the key going missing so soon, there wouldn't be any doubt as to where it went. Illiam finishes picking up the pieces with Hilda. Can I get a menu, when you get a chance? And he takes up a position adjacent to the room, where he can lean against the wall.

I have absolutely no problem with a reconsideration. Especially with the added stimulus of Kairon's knock. Perfectly reasonable, especially considering Illiam's dice luck.

Hildana thanks the halfling for helping her pick up her tray. Thanks, that hasn't happened to me in nigh on three years. I've been doing this so long the tray seems like an extension of my hand. Hildana is about to shut and lock the door, when Kairon asks about his room. Jak's got all three rooms prepped for you upstairs. You'd need to see him for the keys, might be something served better after the lunch rush is over. He's got a room full o' hungry Jacks to feed at the moment.

From inside the parlor Lunarinus voice is heard. Kairon, I'll watch your belongings, go and do what you need to. We'll still be here when you get back, either finishing up lunch, or, more likely, still wading through this enormous book.

With that Hildana shuts the parlor door, locks it, and drops the key back in the pocket of her apron.

Doing a little scene-editing...

The door would open before Hilda could lock it again, the woman giving him a quick glare which Baradim returned with an apologetic smile.

"Sorry Hilda. Need to some help from out here..." Baradim would clear his throat, his voice raising as he looked over the inn. "Is Kimi still here? We need help with someone who reads Elvish." He would survey the room, seeing who would volunteer. "If someone knows how to read the tongue of the angels as well, that would be most appreciated."

Illiam won't announce that he can speak elvish to the room, but if nobody else volunteers, he'll stop Baradim before he goes back to the parlor. It's not what he would usually do, but he's getting tired of his poor luck today. Also, I'd really rather have him working with the party than against them, even if it's a little difficult to justify at this point.

In answer to Baradim's call for Kimi, Jak answers. Kimi took off in a huff. Something about teenage angst or boys or somethin' er another. I don't know a darned soul besides her, her mom and dad, and maybe Brickasnurd that would know Elvish. He pauses for a moment and then hollers above the din of the crowd as only a barkeep can do. Hey! Anybody know Elvish in here? A low grumble goes through the crowd and Baradim is just about to head back into the parlor disappointed when...

On his way out, Kairon says, I'll send Kimi back this way. She's likely headed to the church, so I should find her. And thanks for the tip, Hildana -- I'll order later.

Better not let another meal get between me and my prayers. Trouble enough, as-is.

Kairon steps up his pace as he beelines out of the inn and turns up the path toward the "church". Is it bad that I have difficulty, even in-game, calling a building by that name? Keeping an eye out for Kimi as he heads for the shrine of Sarenrae, he begins to focus his thoughts for prayer. If Kairon spots her, he'll quickly say, Actually, Kimi, they could use your help in the parlor. Go see what you can do. with a quick smile. Kneeling fully before the winged ankh, Kairon prays quietly, and slowly:

Prayer for Spells:
Sarenrae, Lady of Light and Fire, I ask you not be displeased with me for my delay. Haste seemed needed. Forgive me, if I have offered any offense.

That finished, Kairon will prowl about the building, looking for Lady Cirthana.

Wait, Illiam says as Baradim passes on his way back to the parlor My elvish might be a little rusty, but I can read it just fine.

That was the most thoroughly satisfying narration of praying for spells I've ever read. Good show.

Kimi Eaveswalker is nowhere to be found, and at first blush it appears that Lady Cirthana is not about either, but then you hear her talking to someone, her voice echoing in some narrow chamber, and then you see her appear from a door that is in a somewhat hidden alcove in the front of the church. Ugh! That book cellar is going to be the death of me if this Blackscour isn't, she says to a tall slim youth, with just the barest growth of a burgeoning mustache. Tell your dad I'm sorry I don't have a copy of that book. She iterates, and then the youth takes off out the door. Seeing Kairon finishing up prayers from across the church she saunters over. Why...She pauses for a moment, seemingly stuck to remember your name. Kiron is it? What brings you back so soon? How did things go with Kreed? With Laurel?

Baradim will nod with a frown upon his face, ready to turn back in and alert the others that he would seek her or her parents out, when a voice rose up catching his attention. The half-orc would look down at the halfling, a moment of recognition within his eyes as he gives a quick nod.

"You can? Good, come with me." Time was of the essence and every minute that passed meant that another individual came closer and closer to death. He would escort Illiam back inside the parlor, nodding towards him. "He says he can read Elven." Baradim will simply say, moving back towards the table where the book was to try and look it over. Kanga would continue to rest by the burning fire within the fireplace, lazily watching the party work.

Kairon, m'lady. Kai-run. But, yeah, had ta get m'prayers in, 'fore She scorched me sore, y'know? Kairon laughs, short, and a hint of Y'know what I mean in it. But a nice meal won't be worth the Dawnflower's ire, o'course.

Just so happens I'm hunting a book, myself. Got a copy of The Birth of Light and Truth here? Left mine back home under my pillow; had to leave a bit faster'n I woulda liked, after that . . . And Laurel was helpful. Kreed's all axe-bit, no hearth fire.

If you wouldn't mind joining us? Lunarinus says. My name is Lunarinus Scipio, I was sent as part of an envoy from Almas to try and aid Falcon's Hollow in finding relief from this current disease that plagues them. My counterpart, Kairon, should be returning shortly. Are you from Falcon's Hollow? Lunarinus says, waiting for the newly entered halfling to introduce himself.

Illiam hops down from his chair, leaving the menu that he's been ignoring (aside from using it as cover) on the table. He peeks out from behind Baradim, only coming up to his waist, and gets his first look at the book through the group of people gathered around it.

Yikes, the dice algorithm clearly likes Lunarinus! Woof.

That young gentleman was Jurin Kreed, and he was asking about a copy of Deepwood Fey Encounters by the well known Pathfinder Tessino Welisarne, on his father's behalf. She says nonchalantly. The Birth of Light and Truth? You're in luck, twice, having just been in the book cellar I was reminded that an old cleric of Sarenrae, the very one that setup her shrine here, coincidentally, left his copy with the church. I could certainly let you borrow it. Or, I might even be able to be convinced to sell it to you for a price? Lady Cirthana says and bats her eyelashes at Kairon in a slightly coy way.

Lunarinus takes the halfling's hand in greeting. Well met, Illiam. Yes, I came in on The Silver Stream. Not sure how much you know about what's going on in town, but we've borrowed a tome from the local herbalist Laurel, with promise to return it. She seems to think there is an entry in here about the Blackscour fungus and perhaps a recipe for a cure. If you are not otherwise engaged and wouldn't mind helping us out, Chillel Lunarinus nods and points at the young lady, has determined that some of the entries are written in Elven. We would consider it a great service, if you'd be willing to help us. Please, join us. He says, and then looks at Baradim still in the doorway. Would you get another chair for Illiam please, Baradim?

Illiam speaks up to Baradim, as he walks out Maybe one of those tall stools! This table's kinda tall...

Turning back to Scipio Yeah, I'll take a look.

I know nothing more about it than the title suggests. Lady Cirthana says, and then begins to walk back toward the slightly hidden door to the cellar. If you'll follow me. She leads Kairon down a, clearly, rarely used set of dusty wooden stairs that lead to a dank, mildew covered cellar of the church. There are casks, barrels, and odd crates laying about haphazardly, but there are also several double sided rows of books. Approaching closer it becomes apparent that most of the titles are of various religious and philosophy texts, but there are other tomes mixed in. Lady Cirthana goes to a middle shelf and pulls out a thick dusty copy of The Birth of Light and Truth with gold leafed edges, and a gold leaf inscription on the front cover of the angel ankh. The book, before it came to rest in the cellar, was well used, and the front cover has marked, "Property of Nuthor Calene" in black ink. The rear of the book is also filled with a compliment of Nuthor's various musings and notes about folk-medicine he came across in his travels. There you are, a right beautiful copy, if I do say so myself. Lady C, says. I could let you have it for, say... three gold pieces? She looks at him quizzically wondering if the price might be a titch too high.

I have a busy afternoon, and won't be able to post again for a few hours. Kairon if you want to just grab the book and continue posting, go for it.

Chillel looks up from the book she has been trying to decipher without success as she hears a familiar yet unexpected voice, saying:-

Illiam, good to see you again. I would be most glad of your help, and a break from these hopelessly disorganised scribblings. The parts in Elvish are here, here... Finally, my halfling friend, you are to read the book, not eat it.

Chillel gets up and walks around the room distractedly, fatigued and rather frustrated by her lack of progress.

A hefty price, but worth it, I think. Rummaging in his belt pouch, Kairon produces three gold crowns, two of his own, and the one Laurel gave him earlier. I would surely enjoy a longer talk, lady, but I should turn to the task at hand. Glad you had what I was looking for! Kairon tosses her a wink and a smile, and clomps his way up the stairs.

In just a few minutes, he is back at the parlor door, and graciously accepts Hildana's passage into the room.

So, where are we? And what's he doing here?!, gesturing at Illiam.

You know Illiam? Our diminutive but learned friend can read Elvish. Whoever wrote or compiled the thing did so in at least six languages, between Illiam and I we can read five. If you could busy yourself conjuring a literate, helpful and polite celestial being we should be able to read it all. That will only leave the problem of the fact it is "organised" in a way no sane being would conceive of.
