Sarenrae's Sweet Sword! That's a big cat! Kairon seems utterly flabbergasted. As he notices the relative disregard the beast garners, he turns back to his plate quietly, just to finish the last of the flapjacks and syrup. But, every few moments, his eyes cut over to where the huge cat awaits its master.

Falcon's Hollow gets few if any tourists. If the quality of the pancakes was widely known we might get a few more. If you don't eat them all that is.

Chillel smiles.

Give me a few days and I just might! Illiam says, swallowing the last mouthful from his second plate and pulling the third toward him. So, what do people do for excitement around here, other than annoying the big boss man and then running off?

Illiam stiffens upon seeing the big cat walk in, and readies himself to cast a spell or shift away if the animal acts aggressively, then chuckles at the sound of its purr.

Any hoards of treasure guarded by dungeons and dragons, he asks, only half sarcastically or anything like that?

Male NG Half-Orc Hunter 2 | HP: 20/20 | AC: 18 (12 Tch, 16 Fl) | CMB: +4, CMD: 16 | F: +5, R: +5, W: +2 | Init: +4 | Perc: +7, SM: +8 | Speed 30ft (20ft) | Animal Aspect: 20 rnds | Spells: 1st 0/2 | Active conditions: Baradim - None; Kanga - Animal Aspect: Eagle (+4 Perception)

The half-orc seems to hear the cleric's exclamation, his head turning towards the group. Underneath the cowl, the extended jowls and tusks easily reveal the half-orc heritage but it is not a beastial, savage face. He is just on the line of being handsome, though the dirt upon his face clouds that slightly.

"Hail, newcomers. Welcome to Falcon's Hollow." He says in a strong but clear voice. His smile is small but polite. He first looks to Chillel, recognizing the witch from the times they had encountered one another out in the forest nearby the woods. Her magic was strange, unknown, but she seemed to have the same respect for the land that he still had.

"Greetings, Chillel. I am glad to see that the sickness has not claimed you." Kanga would approach, smelling the woman and licking at her hand until some sort of attention was giving and he could nuzzle into a touch. Soon after though, the cougar wisely went to sniffing the floor and scrounging for any dropped pieces of pancake.

He looked to the cleric, the paladin, the strangely dressed half-orc, and the bottomless halfling with an appraising stare before speaking once more.

"I am Baradim and this is Kanga. I am hunter here in the Darkwood Vale and a follower of the Green Faith. I heard rumors that an envoy was being sent from Almas to aid us against the epidemic we seem to be suffering from. I assume you are them?" He addressed them all, looking curiously between each one.

When Illiam asked what there was to do here, a small smirk spread across the half-orc's face. "Depends on the level of danger you're interested in. We do not have dragons, persay, but older...more alien beings stalk the woods. Old dwarven ruins, fallen settlements, strange places, there is much to see beyond the trees...and much that would be happy to see such a well-fed halfling such as yourself." The tease was obvious in his voice but his demeanor wasn't offensive, if a tad bit more playful. He leaned on his guisarme, the worn but still sharp blade gleaming in the inn's light.

Glancing towards Kairon, he chuckled and nodded. "Kanga is quite the large cougar for being so young. I am intrigued to see how he grows. I was trained by a druid in some old rituals, things to help bring out a more primal, powerful side of a beast. It takes time though, time and patience." The cat would brush up against the man, almost enough the knock him out of the seat with that low, rumbling purr. It was more like an overgrown house cat than a fierce beast. "He is harmless unless I instruct him otherwise and you do not seem the type to try and harm me without cause. He is quite proud of his fur, meticulously cleans it after every outing."

Ok, that was a bit abrupt, but I guess we're going for it now.

Well, I wasn't really talking to you, Illiam speaks up now, loudly enough to be heard at the cleric's table, and a bit peeved at the half-orc for listening to his conversation (which is ironic because he's been listening to everyone else's), but I'll bite. I'm looking for an adventure, be it a hunt for treasure or a quest for reward. He glances over to the cleric (upon whom he's been eavesdropping since the boat left Absolom) as he says this last, then back to the half-orc. Can you tell me where a halfling with more than a few tricks up his sleeve might find something like that around here?

It's done now, don't worry about it. Something like this had to happen eventually for the party to form, I just wasn't expecting it so soon. Illiam was still keeping a low profile, only talking to Chillel.

Well met Baradim. I am well, but the sickness worries me greatly. Kanga, how are you boy.

Chillel hugs and nuzzles the large cat, who purs with pleasure, before going to seek fallen scraps of food. Then turns toward the paladin and his group following Baradim's indication they have been sent as aid against the epidemic.

If you have indeed been sent here to alleviate the epidemic, I welcome you warmly and will assist you as I can. My family lives here.

And in response to Illiam:-

You have taken the wrong path if you seek dungeons and dragons I am afraid. The current danger here is disease, less dramatic but deadly.

To be clear: Kairon has only been on the boat since it left Almas -- Triela to Almas on foot, Almas to Falcon's Hollow by boat. I don't know if anyone else sailed all the way from Absalom, or not.

Never in my life heard of a disease that paid out a treasure once ya'd whipped it. And I know nothing about an "adventure" or a "quest". Kairon looks to the "townies", each in turn. Disease I can help with, though, treasure or no. I think, though, that Scipio, Goruck, and me have a meetin' to go to in just a minute -- and it's that meetin' that's got me so far from home, had me sick since I got on the boat, and brought me to me the "bullies'r'us" welcoming committee. With that last, he gestures in the general direction Teedum and his lackeys traveled. I talked Scipio into a meal before getting to that meeting, and I doubt I can put him off any more. Best advice I can give is to stick around -- something might come up!

Love the roleplay! Love it. I'm steadily getting things ready to go for Monday.

@Joynt Jezebel: Very important to remember to click that little "Post As" box and pick Chillel. Mistakes happen obviously, but it you notice it quickly enough you can go back and correct it by submitting your posts as the character. :)

I know the deadline for characters was tonight at midnight (-6:00 GMT) but it seems to me like we have our group really set already, even (somewhat) organically got to meet each other. I have things in the works for how to make sure Dolok is roped into helping as well, but I'll save those for Gameplay on Monday.

Point I'm trying to make is that I've decided, based off of participation here in the discussion thread that our group is as follows:

  • Baradim
  • Chillel
  • Dolok
  • Goruck
  • Illiam Taal
  • Kairon Daaltin
  • Lunarinus Scipio

Congratulations(?) to all. I'm very glad to have had such interest in this idea, and I look forward to a long and fun campaign with you all. Please feel free to continue to roleplay here in the discussion thread at your leisure, but if you could just keep things located in the Jak'a'napes, I'd appreciate it. Monday I'll have a post that will spark the envoy from Almas to go see Lady Cirthana, and we'll go from there. :D

As always if there are any questions, don't hesitate to post them, and I'll answer them as quickly as I am able.

Sickness? Illiam curses under his breath and pushes away the last of his pancakes. Well, if I'm going to get it from these, it's too late now he thinks, then, obviously reconsidering, pulls the plate back in and finishes the last few bites.

BTW, Illiam isn't "in" yet, and it's starting to sound like he won't be until after you guys come back with a mission and (presumably) some promise of reward. He's not the most altruistic character, so unless something convinces him to tag along, you guys might have to find him again later.

Totally understandable, I do have in mind a meagre reward the Consortium will be willing to part with, but since the envoy is being led by a paladin, and a rich paladin to boot, I'm not sure he'd even accept such a reward. There might be a way to "ovehear" that a reward was offered, in which case perhaps Illiam could see about collecting that reward all for himself if he does indeed provide some aid to the group that looks to tackle this affliction.

Also, I guess, since I'm divulging stuff, my plan is to have one or more of the NPCs in town recommend that the envoy asks for the help of Baradim and Chillel since they are locals, therefore will have influence and history with the people, and also because they both have at least made small forays into the woods. Baradim in particular will be a valuable resource in leading the group through the treachery of the woods.

Dolok I plan on having forced to join the group by Kreed as a way to punish him for his little bit of insolence, and a way to keep him out of the Consortium's hair for a while. (So his little shenanigans at the Jak'a'napes actually worked out well.) :D

Which means everybody BUT Illiam will have a pretty decent reason to help out. As you say, though, Illiam isn't here for altruistic heroics, he's here escaping from his past. Of course, sooner or later, he'll need to find a way to make money, or starve...

Escaping his past, yes, but also looking for riches, and looking to prove how great he is (he thinks this adventuring stuff will be easy). A good ego stroking could probably also convince him to come along, though that seems less likely at this point than a promise of reward. If he could be convinced to come along when the reward is offered, he would definitely say "speak for yourself!" when the paladin tried to turn it down. At this point, though, he doesn't have a reason to be there at that time.

Right, it seems like, just because of Illiam's motivations, he's almost painted himself into a corner. I mean, it might be a situation where Illiam actually has to wait for the group to make a pitstop back in town after overcoming one obstacle or another, hearing their tales of adventure, and witnessing first hand the treasure they were able to murder-hobo out of someone/something. In which case, he might actually ask to join up with them, for a share of the loot. I think there will be opportunity for Illiam to join up, but you'll have to roleplay him true to himself, and maybe that means he sits around for a while? We'll see how it unfolds next week. :)

After a good while waiting in the shed he finally spots Peyton & his goons walking by. Dolok waits another 10 minutes or so & then thinks he's both hungry & curious about the newcomers, so he decides to head back to Jack'a'napes to get some pancakes & maybe some info.

Hail Baradim! Glad to see you made it back again. Then he turns to look at the newcomers. Allow me to extend a somewhat "warmer" welcome to Falcon's Hollow, said with a bit of a bow & flourish, and a smile, - not that it's much - but I wanted to assure you that not all the people here are as uncouth as Peyton is. Now please pardon me, but it is in my nature to be curious, so if I may, with no offense intended, ask as to why you have come to our little town? Of course if you tell me it is none of my business, then so be it & no offense taken or given I hope. He finishes with a somewhat expectant look on his face looking around the 3 faces at the table.

For the moment Dolok has decided that these three are much more interesting people. He will check out Illiam & Chillel in a moment.

Argh. Reading back through and saw a typo. Blasted phone. I hate small screens!
I've always been more a "dog person" than cat, but I can see the appeal of having that feller as a companion. Too big to call him a pet, ain't he? Kairon laughs, clearly still a mite nervous about Kanga.
Like to live a bit dangerously, do ya?, Kairon says to Dolok. And if that head of your'n ain't been hit with Sarenrae's smile, I'm the Rough Beast hisself! And old Teedum there . . . . Well, I can't see how folks don't like 'im. Kairon rolls his eyes. And no disrespect to Scipio here, but rules is only as good as the people who live 'em. I could do without, but not everyone's as friendly as me.

I'll certainly take the one over the other! Doubt Teedum's too concerned about my opinion, but I'll let it lie. Kairon smiles at the pale-haired gal, and turns back to Scipio. So this illness is what our boat ride was about? If it's bad enough they sent the three of us up here, we'd better snap-to on that meeting! It's about the only thing I'm good at at all, healing. But I've only tried my hand against broken bones, cuts, and colds, flu, and such. All the Brothers back home said I had a special gift for it, though. From time to time, the Dawnflower grants me a boon as I'm caring for someone, and I can administer a better remedy in a fraction of the time. If I can talk to yer local healers, I might can tip the scales for the better; but it sounds like this may be worse than I've gone against. I think I've kind of figured my own way into the group, but your way sounds like it could be kind of "fun" as well! Whatever you want to do is fine by me. I'm just going ahead & roleplaying it for the fun of it!

Here to help fight this disease you say? GREAT! This sickness does not seem to be fatal, but it greatly affects the economy as jobs can't get done & such. Symptoms you ask? Coughing, wheezing, congestion, fever, and significant lethargy. I'm not aware of anyone dying from it so far though. I'm certainly glad of any help we can have on this as I'm afraid of it affecting my family or my Master. If I may be of any service to your group I would be glad to help out! I'm quite proficient at starting fires, big or small! Do you need your pipe lit? I'd be happy to oblige! And no charge for this service either!

Dolok turns towards Baradim. So how's my handsome friend Kanga doing today? As I toss a piece of dried meat to the big cat. Then I turn to the lady & the Halfling. My lady, I have seen you around town before I believe, but I don't think I've had the pleasure of making your acquaintance! My name is Dolok, Dolok Pickering, Fire maker extraordinaire! Pleased to meet you! And I see you are also a lover of animals! May I ask if your bird - pardon my lack of knowledge in bird species please, - has a name?

Dolok will then turn to Illian. And you sir, welcome to the Hollow as well! Please be assured that we welcome visitors - despite the attitude of some of those in power! - And with no offense intended, may I ask why you have come to our little town? And please understand that if you do not wish to divulge the nature of your visit that is certainly within your rights! I hope you will not be offended by my mere curiosity!

Each of these introduction/greetings is done with it's own bow & flourish & a smile upon my face!

Now that looks and sounds like the welcome wagon. :D

If everyone around here is going to ask so many questions of anyone they don't recognize, I've got to figure out a believable lie. Uh, maybe another time. I just realized that I'm late for some business across town. Nice to meet you all, though. Illiam jumps down from the tall chair, preparing to leave.

I can totally see Teedum making sure Dolok is among the number heading out to track down Usessa's special ingredients. "Never give a command you know won't be obeyed", as it were. Works out well, either way! Also -- we're giving Scipio alot to catch up on, so let's not bury him!! I'm about to hit my "radio silent" window (Tool concert!! Certainly good sir! I definitely have no intentions of delaying you on your business!

He seemed maybe a tad nervous. I might want to keep my eyes open around him just to be on the safe side.

Whoa! I just remembered something. Houserules! I know I have a few, and I've been playing with some of them so long I forget they're houserules, but this one I know people will want to weigh in on ahead of time. If I remember others over the weekend I'll post them for discussion.

At my table we do Crits like this:
1) You rolled a crit. Awesome!!

2) You roll to confirm the crit.

3) If you confirm the crit, AWESOME! Multiply that damage!!!

4) If you do not confirm the crit, you get max weapon damage.

3B)If your multiplied dice rolled, do not equal up to the total max weapon damage you get max weapon damage anyway.

So for example it might look like this:

I swing my glaive in a mighty arc at the kobold zombie!

I Crit: 20 = 20

Woot!

I try to confirm: 4 + 5 = 9

Darnit! Well at least I get max damage. :)

I get max damage because Mended has a critical house rule: 10 + 5 = 15

Please think about whether you'd like to implement this rule as a group, remembering what's good for the goose is good for the gander, and monsters and NPCs would follow this same rule.

Taking care to keep his blade from bumping, Goruck tilts his masked face respectfully before saying to Chillel, "Your aid would be much appreciated. Baradim's head bows apologetically to the halfling, speaking with a murmur. "I do apologize. I tend to travel by myself and speak to myself, I don't talk with others often and your words caught my attention." He spoke honestly, the woods were a lonely and desolate place and there is plenty of time for introspection among the darkwood trees. He seemed as if he was about to speak again when the door opened up and in walked Dolok, full of energy and extravagent speech.

He smiled at the young human who entered in, the blacksmith's apprentince if he remembered. He remembered watching the young boy start fires off in the forest edges, watching from the shadows of the trees. "Greetings Dolok. It is good to see you again." He gave a small nod and let the man continue talking, observing the interactions between him and the cleric of Sarenrae. It was interesting to watch the man be just the slightest bit uncomfortable at Kanga's presence, who still appeared to be as playful as before until a quick little whistle from the half-orc brought the cat back. He didn't say much about the disease that the others haven't already been made aware of. "The disease is quite dangerous, the stocks for treating it are running low.."

The cougar purred loudly as the dried meat, letting out an oddly high-sounding meow before biting and tearing at the piece of meat. The big cat would be distracted eating as Baradim chuckled, shaking his head. "You're going to make him fat..." Baradim said with the slightest smirk upon his face, not actually minding. The treats kept Kanga playful and in a good mood, his hunting companion deserved the rewards. The feline would only growl for a moment as the man gave him a strong hug, more due to the fact that it was distracting from him savoring the meal than from the actual physical contact.

"Be safe out there, pay attention to Teedum's thugs. They look for newcomers." Baradim would say to the halfling as he began to head on out of the inn, giving a farewell nod to the small man. There was something about him that seemed strange but what it was, he couldn't quite put his finger on it. He paid it little further mind as the large, armored man stood up and approached.

Baradim gave a slow nod of his head, responding back in that rough, un-pretty tongue. "Tēvs. Nekad viņu pazina. Cilvēks, kurš mani izvirzīja nogalināja. Viņš nebija labs cilvēks tomēr. Mana māte pārliecinājās man mācīt valodu." He nodded, sharing a smile for a moment before responding back in the Common tongue as well. "Indeed it is. Most of our kind that I see work for the Consortium as a lumberjack or another of Teedum's thugs. The former a fair if unending duty, the little more than the worst of what people expect from us. Welcome to Falcon's Hollow. What is your name and where do you come from?" He would gesture to the strange blade that Goruck had, nodding. "I have not ever seen such a blade before."

Orcish:
Father. Never knew him. The man who raised me killed him. He was not a good man however. My mother made sure to teach me what she could learn.

I think it'd still be easy to get Illiam in! It is known there are ruins and other things out in the Darkwood Forest but to adventure out there by himself would be akin to suicide. Perhaps he sees the party heading out for the cure as an opportunity to scout out the landscape some and see how this group fares in the wild...see if any of them would be worth associating with as potential partners for future ventures?

Actually, I'm now thinking that he'll find out about the ingredients that Laurel needs and try to go after them himself, in parallel to the group. He'll run into the group in the woods, probably when either he or the rest of the group encounters some some kind of danger, and he'll learn why adventurers usually work in teams. (Right now, he thinks he can do it himself)

It is unfortunate you cannot burn or freeze an illness. But a group is being assembled that does not consist of healers. With valor and providence we will prevail.

The last sentence of the primer under "Unmarked. Brookman's Well" mentions people succumbing to the illness. That means kicked the bucket.

1)@Joynt Jezebel, you might want to actually change Chillel to your default alias, that way when we're in the Gameplay thread it will automagically post as her. If you need help figuring that out let me know. It's actually under your "Account" alias settings.

2)@Dolok: Jezebel is right, it was subtle, and I put it in a "hidden" place in the primer for a fairly wicked reason on my part. I wanted to see if anybody actually read it "cover to cover" so to speak. Call it a small test of gamesmanship. Just because you never found it or it didn't register is not a big deal. The fact that people are dying of the disease would have been/will be brought up just as soon as things get going on Monday. :)

I am still loving this roleplay! Goruck and Baradim where'd you get the orcish? Is there an orcish translator out there somewhere? Very cool!

I'm working away getting everything prepared for Monday. Right now my biggest problem is bad-guy adjustment. It's a tight rope to walk trying to make sure something will give this group a challenge, but not TPK it... It's entirely possible I'll be adjusting things "on the fly" during the game if I see things headed drastically in one direction or another.

Cheers,
MW

Illiam steps out the door of the Jak'a'napes and into the Low Market. To the northeast, he sees a citadel atop a hill, with expensive looking buildings and a tower visible above its walls. At the foot of the hill sits the town's tribunal. Not that way... To the southwest, he sees a sign that says "The Goose 'n' Gander." He takes this for either a general store or an animal breeder, but the lack of smell and the sight of shelves through the door confirms it to be the former. Beyond that, Illiam can hear the sound of a woman laughing in that forced way that can only mean she's being paid to be there, and for a moment, he's reminded of his mother.

To the south he sees the docks, and decides that he had best try to stay clear of them, at least until the ship that brought him here has gone, so he decides to head north, along the base of the hill.

Ah, you're right. I forgot about that line in the larger post. I guess we'll have to pick up Illiam's story on monday.

Well my friends, I was able to get all my preparation work done with a bit of time to spare. So.....

Drumroll ...........

The game is on! Please note that I'll use the alias "The World Around You" when I'm in GM mode, because most of the time it will be narration of the world around the PCs. Occasionally, as I did here in the discussion thread, I'll use aliases of actual NPCs. Most of the feedback for my houserule for criticals was positive so I'm going to move forward with that rule in action.

PLEASE remember to post from your character's alias when in the gameplay thread, and remember that you have up to ten minutes after posting to edit should you need to. I am really looking forward to this game, and I hope we all have fun, learn something, and treat each other with respect. You are more than welcome to pop into the gameplay thread as soon as you're ready, and I'll monitor and react just as quickly as I can. Remember also that unless I specifically ask for it, you do not need to roll dice, unless you are certain that an action requires a roll.

See you soon! Happy Gaming.
