Wait. You said "Jack-uh-naypes"? I thought it was "Jak-uh-nap-eez". Jak'a'napes. Jak'a'napes. Right, right. Kairon turns smartly toward the door, his 5'7" frame moving with purpose. Well, catch Goruck quick, and let's eat! Kairon eases through the door, dipping the longspear to clear the frame, and takes a long look around the room. Is there a table for three in this place?

Shaking his head at his charge's command, Goruck looks down to stare the young nobleman in the eye as he walks towards the inn. "I'm a swordsman, not a brute. Death is only for the wicked, not the misguided. Besides, I'm here to protect you and our good healer." His voice was low, and matter of fact.

Following behind the nobleman and the healer, the half orc peers about as he enters the inn. Well, best be aware of your surroundings. Dursk would have my head if I didn't look, if he were still alive.

Me too! Can't wait until Mended's got the full data up. I feel like it'll take a while though, he's probably got a lot to do.

Fair enough! Baradim doesn't really travel much from Falcon's Hollow. I'm excited too! :D

Still hungry, but now more able to concentrate, Illiam starts-in on his second platefull of cinnamony goodness.

If roleplaying eating pancakes is this much fun, this is gonna be great!

I knew halflings eat a lot, but is this even possible?

Also, just wanted to say, with four blasters, a cleric, and two ridiculously statted up martials, I'm going to have to be making some adjustments to the module in order to make sure it is actually challenging for you all. Don't worry, I'm an expert at making things way too hard, way too quickly. Mwa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

I'm just kidding.

Or am I...

I'm not a blaster by any stretch of the imagination. I don't have any direct-damage spells.

My character Chillel can blast, debuff [evil eye, I want misfortune too] or save or die [slumber, web bolt]. I may gain some buff eventually, fortune in particular.

Wow! This group has me super excited to GM. Like Illiam said, if it's this much fun roleplaying eating pancakes...

There are some things I need to address before we actually start the game. Which, Lunarinus is right, I have quite a bit of work to do before I'm ready to open the Gameplay thread. Right now my timetable is to be ready to start on Monday October 31st. Mwa ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Okay, so I'm going to address this to the whole group rather than individuals. I appreciate all the hard work people have put into their character profiles, they all look good, but everyone is missing one element or another. Some are missing a thorough background story, some are missing some of the key elements of a stat block. I hate to be a stickler but it will make things A LOT easier for me if each character's profile has a stat block arranged in the Pathfinder style. This should be separate from the fill in boxes that Paizo provides for a character's profile. If you've already filled in those boxes, that's great, don't delete them, but please do add all statblock info into the other part of the profile as well.

This is an example of a complete Pathfinder statblock. Note that things are arranged in a certain order: basics, defense, offense, statistics, description; within those sections there are key elements that need to be included. And I know this sounds nitpicky, but if you could bold the section headers I'd appreciate it.

I also would really like it if people could have an actual link to their character sheets. I know that some people have the url address in their profile. Changing that to a link is as simple as putting {url=(insert your url address here)}Character sheet{/url} Except replace these "{}" with brackets []. Goruck, I'm interested in the website that your character statblock was produced on? Is that something other people could use if they want to?

@Warforged, you put Baradim's character info into a post. Were you going to create an alias for that? If you're waiting for me to say, "you're in," you're in. :) If you could get Baradim's alias set up with all the info you put in that post plus a link to a web-based or PDF character sheet, I'd appreciate it.

Again, I really appreciate all the work people have put in so far. Things are shaping up for a GREAT campaign! I'm loving the roleplay that's happening so far, and, if I get time, which I think I should, I plan on actually posting some roleplay of my own from some of the NPCs in town, to keep things rolling. :)

Friday still looks like a perfect deadline for everybody to have everything set up and ready to go, and if we make that deadline I will try and make sure that I've got all my planning done over the weekend, so we can start the "actual" game on Monday!

Thanks everybody! Really looking forward to taking this group into the wild environs of the the woods.

Cheers,
MW

Since it hasn't yet been relevant, and my window of opportunity is closing quickly, I have to ask:

I took Improved Initiative "just because", and it doesn't feel quite right. Anybody got a recommendation for a feat?? Or should I (could I?) drop the second feat for another +2 to an ability score? A little wiser, perhaps -- or just drag my Int out of the gutter.

SELECTIVE CHANNELING

The raucous noise and jovial attitude of the breakfast crowd at Jak Crimmy's fine establishment for refreshment and rest, the Jak'a'napes, suddenly and drastically quiets. A thick muscled and pug-faced man walks in, flanked by two well armed and well armored guards, and two more men with hefty axes strapped to their backs follow in after. It is obvious this man is of some importance in the town, and you hear whispers of, "boss," and "payday," running amok in the throng of people in the common room. After surveying the crowd, the man nods for his bodyguards to stay at the door, then makes a straight line, made easier because people scramble to get out of his way, directly for the table where Kairon, Lunarinus, and Goruck have taken up residence. He stands over the three men, looking down at them. When he speaks it sounds like saws scraping through knotted wood. Allo mates, name's Teedum, Payden Teedum. He begins, not even allowing time for your response. You're new in town, if you're wonderin' how I know, don't, the Consortium makes it their business to know everything what happens here in the Hollow. Mista Kreed sent me to welcome you to town, and to let you know who's in charge, should you need anything.

While his words say he's welcoming you, it feels very much like he's sizing you up, and making a display of his strength.

For Illiam:
Payden completely ignores you. Which may or may not have to do with your very stealthy entrance into Falcon's Hollow. Regardless, insofar as Payden's reaction to you goes, there isn't one. You are treated exactly like the rest of the crowd.

Ok, I believe I've got it all in my tag now, including a link to my character sheet (which I think could be very useful!). Please check it out & let me know if I'm missing anything?

WHOA! You got all that in your quick-look bar! Yikes, that's way more than I expected. I was just talking about putting it into your profile, like where your background is. That is way above and beyond the call of duty. You can leave it as is if you want, or move it over, or leave it and copy paste it over to the "lower" part. Whatever suits your fancy. If you want an example just click on Kairon's alias, and look at his profile.

Edit: I have to say, having the link to the character sheet right there in the quick-look stats is awfully nice. :)

And yes I think it would be VERY good if everybody could put that link to their character sheet on their tag like I did.

Uuuuuhhh! Another Party face! & Considering he doesn't have the unusual "aspect" that Dolok has he may be even better at it!

I'm getting kind of bored here. Nothing much to do in this town. Maybe I'll go get some of those cinnamon things after all.

Upon arriving at Jackanapes and seeing the boss & his goon squad: Oh no ... I hate these guys! Why are they bothering the new folks? Hey Payday! Why are you bothering those fine folks? Don't you know we need new business in this town? As I duck & weave & run back out the door! Do I need any kind of a roll?

Dolok, I'd roll stealth to avoid being seen and/or bluff to disguise your voice. Duck and weave would be, if anything, a low-DC acrobatics check.

Illiam looks over to where the voice came from.

He sees a flash of red hair as the speaker runs out the back. This being the closest thing he's seen to a crime committed by anyone other than himself since he got here, he decides to keep an eye out for that distinctive red hair around town.

I've just been super-duper lazy is all. We're going to be using the "Gameplay" section for when the actual game gets picked up, right? I thought people were still out of town or what have you. If I'm wrong, I'll get Baradim set up posthaste and have him make an introduction at some point.

Yeah, we're clowning a bit before kickoff, basically -- MendedWall's indulging us, a bit. He'll notify us when it's time to switch over to the Gameplay board.

Yeah, as long as you have a google account, it's good. Works very well with spellcasters.

Well, isn't this perfect? Casually standing up, the half orc waves an trunk like arm. "Another plate of the special."

Dolok, I think the bluff and acrobatics were probably enough, given the situation (somebody who knew you would probably recognize the voice, but not a stranger, and it was barely an acrobatic maneuver). The stealth on the other hand, especially with the -5 for moving more than half you speed... well, that wild red hair is pretty hard to miss.

Okay, time for some goal three...

It's very important that you all know that in most situations you will need to wait for me to ask for a roll, unless you are very certain about which skill it is you are attempting.

For example:

PRD Diplomacy Skill wrote:

Action: Using Diplomacy to influence a creature's attitude takes 1 minute of continuous interaction. Making a request of a creature takes 1 or more rounds of interaction, depending upon the complexity of the request. Using Diplomacy to gather information takes 1d4 hours of work searching for rumors and informants.

Try Again: You cannot use Diplomacy to influence a given creature's attitude more than once in a 24-hour period. If a request is refused, the result does not change with additional checks, although other requests might be made. You can retry Diplomacy checks made to gather information.

Thus, making a diplomacy check against an NPC after only a few seconds of interaction would have to be making a request. In Lunarinus' case, it looks like that request would be: "stay out of my business." In order to make that request, the NPC's initial attitude would have to be "indifferent." As per the diplomacy rules. Since you as players don't know the initial attitude of an NPC, rolling a diplomacy check is pointless.

I'm actually glad this came up before we started the campaign! Because I can tell you without ruining anything that Teedum's attitude toward all newcomers to town is "unfriendly." So those diplomacy rolls that people keep making are a waste of the dice roller. If at some point you want to actually try and change an NPC's attitude, you would have to let me know that in ooc chatter so that I can establish that you and the contact have the time to sit and chat away for the full minute it requires to do that.

The same goes for the intimidate skill.

PRD Intimidate wrote:

Check: You can use Intimidate to force an opponent to act friendly toward you for 1d6 × 10 minutes with a successful check. The DC of this check is equal to 10 + the target's Hit Dice + the target's Wisdom modifier. If successful, the target gives you the information you desire, takes actions that do not endanger it, or otherwise offers limited assistance. After the Intimidate expires, the target treats you as unfriendly and may report you to local authorities. If you fail this check by 5 or more, the target attempts to deceive you or otherwise hinder your activities.

Demoralize: You can use this skill to cause an opponent to become shaken for a number of rounds. The DC of this check is equal to 10 + the target's Hit Dice + the target's Wisdom modifier. If you are successful, the target is shaken for 1 round. This duration increases by 1 round for every 5 by which you beat the DC. You can only threaten an opponent in this way if they are within 30 feet and can clearly see and hear you. Using demoralize on the same creature only extends the duration; it does not create a stronger fear condition.

Action: Using Intimidate to change an opponent's attitude requires 1 minute of conversation. Demoralizing an opponent is a standard action.

So again, Goruck's intimidate there is actually invalid, because it is not happening after a minute of interaction with Teedum.

In addition, it's important that you know that the DCs for checks like that are not small: "The DC of this check is equal to 10 + the target's Hit Dice + the target's Wisdom modifier." Metagame knowledge here, in Teedum's case, that means an 18. Teedum is not a man that is to be trifled with, and is specifically designed to be a powerful NPC. To say nothing of what the diplomacy check to change his attitude would be: "Unfriendly ~ 20 + creature's Cha modifier."

For Dolok's little shenanigans, this would be very important, because we might want to establish before he even takes his action, what it is he's trying to attempt, and what skills might be best to use in that situation. As it is, what he did, and the skills he rolled, make his action reckless and dangerous, because Teedum's guards were right by the door, Dolok is a Valer, and they'll want to remind him who is deserving of respect in Falcon's Hollow...

Point being, or TLDR, before you roll for any skill, you'll want to check with me using ooc text, clarifying what it is you're trying to attempt so we can make sure what you want to do is possible. :)

The exception to this is when we're in combat. Once we're in initiative you all should know the rolls that are associate with combat abilities and you can roll away on those. In many situations you'll need to wait for me to let you know whether your attacks hit or not, and then usually by process of elimination everyone will be able to figure out what a target's AC is.

Which brings me to another VERY important point: combat maps. Right now I'm leaning heavily towards just using a google drawing file as our combat map. I had a short-lived campaign with another GM that used them, and it is very slick because everyone has access to the file, and pictures can be used for player icons, and everyone can move things around as they want. This comes with one problem though, trust. With a google drawing I have to give everyone edit rights, which means, if you so wanted to, you could move the baddies as well as yourselves when I wasn't paying attention. The other option is the Roll20 website, but my experience with that over the years makes it seem like more of a headache than a boon. So next week when we get this thing rolling in the Gameplay thread, once we get a combat going, we'll give the google drawings a try, and I'll put everyone on the honor system to only move their own figures. :)

Okay, now on to more fun stuff. :)

Teedum turns an angry glare toward the door where the fiery haired Valer popped in to interrupt his "introductions." He looks at the two axe-wielding roughs that came in with him and just nods his head in the direction of the door. Immediately the two Jacks head out into the street. Teedum then turns his attention back to the table of three, and smiles a winsome, debonair grin. Look laddies, you can strut and posture all you want. I'm here to let you know, what everybody else in this room already knows. He gestures in a wide arc, and you notice that wherever his hand points people stop, still, frozen for that fraction of a second when his gaze and his hand rest in their direction. Falcon's Hollow belongs to the Lumber Consortium, and the Lumber Consortium has hired Gavel Kreed to run it, and Mista Kreed has me to make sure things run the way they're supposed to. You just remember that, and we won't have any problems. With his little speech done, Teedum turns around, and again people scramble to get out of his way. His two sellswords fall in behind him as he heads out the door, and almost immediately the din of the common room is once again loud and clamorous.

Shortly after his departure, a beautiful half-elven barmaid arrives with Goruck's requested pancakes. As she drops the plate she takes a moment to look Lunarinus, Kairon, and finally Goruck in the eyes. Listen boys, you seem like the kind what can take care of yerselves in a fight, but Teedum and his boys ain't people you want to get on the bad side of, okay?! Especially you handsome. She says, and winks at Lunarinus. Wouldn't want that gorgeous face of yours messed up so it looks like Teedum's. As she saunters off she turns around and gives Lunarinus a wickedly flirtatious grin, and smooths her skirt over her rear.

If I am not mistaken you too are from out of town. We have few halflings and you are not one of them. So like Mr Teedum, I welcome you, though more quietly. I am Chillel and I am not in charge. Over here, concealed by a mountain of pancakes. And this is Athena.

quietly, conspiratorially (as it were)Think we oughtta check on that red-haired youth? Teedum's already interrupted a meal, which is crude enough, but I'd be willing to wager the cost of this here meal that it's not gonna go well fer that young'n, if they catch up to him. Whatcha think, Sip? Kairon takes a steady pull from his tankard, and thumps it back onto the table. Thanks for the pointers Mendell!

On that subject of learning - What does TLDR mean or stand for please?

Yeah as far as Dolok's actions, the treatment that Payden was giving them just really bothered me & so my character had to say something. I knew it might get Dolok in trouble, but I tend to stand for my principles & that has gotten my characters in trouble more than once. I generally control myself but in this case it was more like we were all having some "fun" of some sort or other & I just thought it could be a little "fun" to stir up the pot so to say. I certainly didn't mean to cause any trouble for the DM! Though this may be the point where our game needs to start at next week if the DM feels necessary to do anything about this.

@ Illiam - Yes, that wild red hair of mine has gotten me into more than one scrape! haha! Maybe Dolok should consider dying it? Naaaa. (edit: I probably get along well with Jak from Jak’a’napes since we both have red hair.)

Edit: thanks for the concern Kairon! I think(hope) I'll be ok!

Kairon may be a number of bricks shy of a full load, but I'm trying to play him as a Neutral GOOD "good guy". He might not understand all of it, but he does "get" most of it. And a thug is a thug is a thug. Something tells me that Teedum's gonna get his head thumped by the time all this is sussed out.

Yes! Dolok fully agrees that Teedum's head should be "thumped" (or maybe from Dolok's point of view it should get "over-heated"!) before all this is over with. I listed Dolok as True Neutral, but he leans towards Neutral good I guess.

I just realized today, as I was reading through back stories (beautiful job everybody btw) that we haven't heard a peep from Dugle/Mondoo the arcanist in quite some time. Might it be that we've lost one of our participants before the game has actually started?

Kairon, I plan to finish this delicious meal, request rooms for us for the night, and then go in search of Lady Cirthana. We have more important things to do than deal with every small squabble that pops up. Falcon's Hollow has existed for many years before we got here, and I'm sure it will continue to exist for years after we're gone. Unless, we don't find a cure for whatever affliction is currently plaguing them. Seemingly on cue one of the patrons at the bar erupts into a fit of wheezing coughs, and dabs a handkerchief to his mouth, that comes away daubed in blood. Lunarinus takes a hefty bite of cinnamon crusted pancakes lathered in maple syrup, winks at Kairon, and says, see what I mean?

Hope my narration of a commoner is okay, just thought it fit well with the situation. My back story is all done and on my profile. I think I got the character sheet linked in the tagline right. Can't wait for Monday!

Worgrider Legions, eh...

Let me guess, you're already laying the groundwork to get a Worg at 5th level for your Divine Bond? Well played Lunarinus, well played. I don't know if this campaign will last that long, I certainly hope it does, if it does last to level 5 and beyond, I think I could see it in my heart to give a faithful paladin a Worg as a mount. We'll have to do something about the fact that they're usually evil aligned, but since you mentioned they were domesticating them, maybe we'll adjust the HD, and change the alignment. Again I say, well played sir. Nothing like thinking ahead... :D

Edit: Forgot to say that your narration of the coughing commoner was just fine in this instance. I wouldn't expect to exert too much control over the world around in general, but the occasional narration that furthers the story is fine by me. :)

"It is easier to grow when focused inwards. The mask serves that purpose well enough."

Goruck seems ready to go assist the youth, before the spellcaster decides to sit. Damn it, my place is beside the cleric and nobleman. Good luck child. Sitting almost uncomfortably on the chair, Goruck keeps his mask tilted back just enough to reveal a gray jawline covered in black ink.

The door that Payday and his group of thugs had left out of would open again, this time revealing the sight of a half-orc covered in a dark cloak. The bell chimes for a moment as he holds the door open widely, allowing an impressively-sized feline to stroll in with him. The door closes behind him as he steps through along the crowded tables, heading towards the barkeep.

His stature is strong and large, not nearly as impressive as Goruck's but enough to show that what he was nonetheless. None of commoners seem to pay the large cougar in their midst any mind, the flirtatious waitress even passing by and scratching it behind the ears which elicits a low, rumbling purr.

The newcomer's clothing is worn but maintained, obviously taken care of and mended wherever possible. He approached the man known as Jak, pulling out a small bag and leaving it upon the bar's top.

"That is all that Laurel had to spare. She will make up your owed coin as soon as she can." The cougar moved to lay down by the half-orc's feet, sniffing the air with an almost pleased look upon his face.

Decided to give everyone a first look at Baradim before he leaves all "mysterious like Aragorn"-esque :P
