Seven players isn't super rough, it is much easier here in PBP. You can set up things and have more time between fights to plan stuff and do stuff. It is less rushed so big groups don't really rush it down and the format just works super well.

I am super excited to be hit with so many magically good stuff.

Are we going to develop intra-party relationships organically, or are we going to roll for them per the background generation process?

Illiam probably wouldn't know anyone ahead of time. He stowed away with the cleric and samurai on the trip from Absolom, likely listening to any conversations they have along the way.

Those inside of Falcon's Hollow know of Baradim and his large feline. He comes in and sells meats from his hunts, he also goes through the forest for medicinal and herbal ingredients for the townspeople. He is offputting but by the common folk, he is a decent fellow if a bit strange ever since his mother passed away. Usually then, they gossip about his father, who killed his his mother, and strange tales of adventure he embarked upon with his mentor, Isha.

If you bought fresh meat for him, he is quite friendly, well-worded, and polite. He doesn't really talk much though. The cougar that saunters around him is much friendlier though and is curious of most people and quite a bit more playful.

Still waiting on Yirangle's character, he said he was leaning Paladin last time he posted about it I think. I'm glad everybody is so excited about it, but I did give a deadline of this coming Friday so I don't want to rush anyone. Especially since I know very well how weekends can pull you away from posting. So all told we're looking at: Cleric, Hunter, Samurai (Shogun), Witch, Wizard, Arcanist, Sorcerer, and potential Paladin... I totally know that people drop out. In the two campaigns that I've had experience in more people dropped out than stayed. So I am absolutely leaning towards one big group. Warforged is right that in this medium larger groups aren't really a bad thing at all, because I'll have time between posts to look at rules, plan, etc. So, don't hold me to it, but right now I'd say that's my strong leaning.

@Chillel: Droskar's Crag is one of the taller peaks in all of the Five King's Mountains range (so yes, lots of snow). It was once home to a thriving Dwarven mining settlement, and there are still a few pockets of humanoids eeking out an existence mining the various caves and empty lava-tubes that wind their way beneath the mountain. Droskar's Crag hasn't erupted in well over a thousand years, but it still produces steam geysers, and occasional rumbles of the earth at varying places throughout the Vale.

I wanted to address this separately.

For characters that have established an existence in the Vale via their background, I'd assume that they at least know of each other, and I leave it up to them, here in the discussion thread, to decide the specifics of that knowledge. There are also several important NPCs, that Valers (that's what they call themselves) would know about, and I'll do my best to get a post of those people up with brief descriptions this week sometime. As for those coming to the Vale from distances in quest to help them with their troubles, those PC relationships will definitely have to formulate organically. However, that gives us a great opportunity for some practice roleplay posts here in the discussion forum. I would wait to post conversations between Goruck, Kairon, and Illiam though, because if Yirangle's character really is a Paladin, he may be on that voyage as well, coming from Almas.

Speaking of roleplay I wanted to give a couple of pointers/tips.

First, narration for your characters actions should be written just as normal text.

Your character's thoughts, though, should be put in italics.

To do that you simply put [i]These are my characters thoughts.[/i

But again, close the brackets.

Character's speaking out loud is written in bold.

Hey, Goruck, you giant behemoth, you're blocking my view of the river!

That is done much the same except [b] is what goes in the brackets[/b

I'm sure there are other pointers I'll give as time goes on, but wanted to get that out of the way right away. Hopefully we'll be able to start some "practice" roleplay posts here in the discussion thread before too far into the week.

Yep, except you don't even need the "Dolok thinks," or "Dolok says." If it's in bold we'll know it's his words, and if it's in italics we'll know it's his thoughts. :)

So, kind of like this...

After the long trek over the river deep into the woods, Mended Wall sits down on a dead log. Glad that's over, we should probably make camp sooner, as opposed to later. The sun's going to be set in less than an hour, and these woods are crawling with faeries and brownies. A good high fire will help ward off some of the nasties. I'll see about gathering some fire wood. He says, and then gets up from the log and starts gathering dry twigs for kindling.

Why, oh, why did they have to ship me off by boat?! How much longer is this trip going to take, Captain? I'm pretty sure I'm going to run out of stuff for this seasickness of mine. And we're not even on the sea! How much sense does that make?! Kairon soon heads toward the stern hold -- things move less around there.

question for MendedWall:
I have been looking at my domain options, and I wanted to ask: would you allow the Medicine subdomain? I may be trying to be too positive, but maybe we won't have too many people getting KO'd -- rolling twice on Heal checks feels a little more appropriate for Kairon than magical CPR . . . . BTW -- with just a little editing (the copy-paste didn't work out right), my character is ready to go.

How are we dealing with encumbrance? By weight, armor, or both?

Good Monday morning gamers!

I have a bit of news. I've been talking to Yirangle. He IS going Paladin, in fact paladin of Sarenrae, and he ended up getting noble birth background so he's got resources. So, the story is going to be that Lunarinus Scipio (pronounced Loo nahr eh nuhs, sip ee oh) is going to have his rich parents put himself, Kairon, and Goruck (a bodyguard whose services have been purchased by the local temple of Sarenrae) on one of their trade galley's (which is heading to Falcon's Hollow anyway to load darkwood and iron ore) so that he can try and help with some trouble the locals have been having. Illiam Taal will, most likely, have found himself hiding in the cargo hold of this very vessel: The Silver Stream. Not sure if Illiam wants to make himself known too readily, as there is a Paladin aboard, and stowing away is a crime... ;)

Yirangle said Lunarinus stat block should be up by tomorrow afternoon. With backstory definitely up by Friday.

I'm going to be putting some links in the Campaign Info tab later this afternoon with a map of Falcon's Hollow, and a list of names/titles/brief descriptions of important Hollow NPCs. I'll also be putting a brief description of the adventure hook there. Those that are having their background place them in or around Falcon's Hollow can use that information as a jumping off point for some roleplay here in the discussion thread.

Not sure how much he would want me to divulge here, but it is important to my next topic. Yirangle is a full-time student, and has a part-time job in addition, which means his posting frequency will be limited to two to three times per week, depending on his schedule.

We've never really talked about a minimum requirement for posting, mostly because everybody has been posting pretty regularly. In this case, I'm going to put the minimum posting requirement at at least one post every 72 hours. That means everyone will have to check in to the game every three days, minimum. This will make the pace of the game pretty slow, but since this is a foray into PBP for everyone, and, honestly, I might need a couple of days myself sometimes to get things organized, I don't see a problem with that. If you have opinions about this please do post them here, and we'll discuss.

@Kairon: For encumbrance I follow the system rules for armor slowing movement, and total weight encumbrance as well. However! I do not count coin encumbrance. Gold in Pathfinder, in my estimation anyway, is just a wealth abstraction anyway, and most people in an economy like Pathfinder's would have most of their wealth kept in gems and jewels because they are easier to transport. So to say that somebody has 2,700 gp, is just an abstraction for their total wealth at the time, not a descriptor of literally how many coins they are carrying around. I hope everyone is okay with that abstraction.

For Kairon:
Go for it! Medicine subdomain looks just fine to me.

Looks like Kairon already has a nice roleplay post about sailing up the Andoshen. Anyone that wants to start some "get to know each other" roleplay posts going here in the discussion thread, feel free. I'd love to read them. :)

As always, if there are any questions let me know. I'll try and have all the campaign info up by no later than 4:30 this afternoon (-6:00 GMT).

Cheers!

A note for those players whose characters are worshipers of Sarenrae.

Faiths of Purity wrote:
Sarenrae’s wisdom is encapsulated in The Birth of Light and Truth. The book is old and many versions exist. One of the features common to nearly all printings is the inclusion of extra pages, so that the reader might record new experiences that reflect Sarenrae’s teachings. Within the book’s text, worshipers find both the history of the goddess and practical advice for living, as well as church doctrine, folk remedies for illnesses, and suggestions for dealing with undead or other evil creatures.

The part about "folk remedies" and recording "new experiences" will be of particular importance. :)

Interesting looking newbies arriving on the ship today. They sure look ready for trouble with all that armor & gear. Wonder what their up to? Hmmm... and that little one? He doesn't have all the armor & such but looks kind of shifty. I may want to keep my eyes on him or more specifically my coin purse!

Aha! Finally, I've been having a devil of a time with my Google Drive this afternoon, but it appears I finally have all the kinks worked out. If you navigate to the Campaign Info tab, you will be greeted by two links: 1) A Map of the town of Falcon's Hollow, 2) My Primer on Falcon's Hollow.

Please do me the service of taking a look at the map and primer over the course of the week, to familiarize yourself with the environs where this adventure will begin. If there are any questions that the primer brings up, but does not answer, just let me know.

Happy Gaming!

Yeah, that and when you stow away on a ship, you don't just walk down the gangplank in broad daylight when the ship reaches its destination. It probably won't be hard to notice that he's new in town, but he puts some effort into not looking as shifty as he is.

Once he's out in the open, Illiam catches the scent of fresh cinnamon flapjacks. He makes a beeline for the Jak’a’napes, where he intends to eat at least four servings.

Before we go too far into gameplay here, I just wanted to mention:

Kairon's laid out to be a backup melee frontliner (AC 18 or 16, depending on situation), and he isn't statted out to be a "save or die" kinda caster. Are any of y'all gonna be upset with me dropping buffs in combat? As is the general wisdom, I don't want to use my channels while in initiative.

The large half orc shrugged, his massive hands checking the equally massive blade that sat on his lap. "No matter how armored you are, a well crafted blade can make you bleed."

Standing up, Goruck slid his blade into it's sheathe with a single practiced motion. " A holy man approached me for a protection deal with a young nobleman. It extends to you as well. Beyond that, I do not know."

Behind the emotionless stone mask the mountainous swordsmen grimaced."My kind gets hired for our brawn, not our intellect."

Goruck should be handling most of the front line problems, so feel free to drop all the buffs. I should be dealing anywhere from 8 to 17 damage per swing.

No, Illiam hid in a box that was unloaded and taken to some warehouse near the docks, then left as soon as it was safe and immediately smelled the cinnamon flapjacks. He followed his nose while Kairon had to stop and ask, so we should be roughly synchronized at this point. Illiam will already be eating when the others from the ship arrive.

Roger that.

I see where the confusion was now. He waited until he didn't see sunlight through the cracks because the box had been taken indoors (so he wouldn't be out in the open when he climbed out), not because it was night out.

Yup. I simply associated the absence of daylight with the passage of time, rather than change of location.

First off, I am loving all the roleplay happening here. Great stuff. Also really enjoy the fact that people, obviously, read the primer, or else they wouldn't know about Jak Crimmy's famous cinnamon crusted pancakes! :)

I think we're definitely accomplishing a lot of our goals already.

I need to give a couple of PBP pointers about when to use different tags for different things.

Anything you narrate for the character should just be written in regular font. This includes gestures, attacks, casting spells, and movement.

Speech, as mentioned before, is put in bold. Oy! Give me another mug of orange juice, and another stack of them flapjacks!

Thoughts, as previously mentioned, are put in italics. I hope I win big at the next game of mig-a-mug-tug.

Blue text is for Player talk. It is reserved for talking about things that break the fourth wall, asking rules questions, telling the GM what ability your character will be using (this is particularly important when we finally get in game and start using abilities in combat), asking a player what they may or may not be doing on their turn to coordinate attacks, etc. The tag (ooc) literally means, out of character.

So this color should be reserved for players talking to each other out of character.

Does that all make sense? If not let me know.

As you all were disembarking (or leaving a warehouse), you most likely noticed a man just observing the crowd in general, not paying any attention to anyone in particular. What caught your eye was the big wild mane of reddish/orangeish hair like you've never seen before. You might have then noticed his red eyes as well ... part of you thinks he looks terrifying, yet at the same time there is something very attractive (18 CHA) about him. You may notice the following as well:

As Dolok scans the crowd, he notices a man getting out his pipe. Dolok swiftly goes to him. Excuse me sir, but may I help you and light that for you? It would be my pleasure to do so! The man seems a bit taken aback & dumbfounded nods a yes. You see Dolok raise a finger to the bowl of the pipe & you could almost swear that you saw a bit of flame jump from his fingertip to the tobacco in the bowl & light it! Aaahh. The look of surprise on their faces! I do enjoy that. It has been some time since I did something bigger though ... I'll have to find something that needs burning soon.

Dolok stuff like this "(18 CHA)" is what should be put in blue text. :) You still have time to go back and edit your post to fix it. Charisma as a character stat is fourth wall stuff, and characters in game would have no idea what that is.

When the big bald man returns with Illiam's enormous stack of flapjacks, it is divided among 3 plates, each still holding more than usual, to prevent the stack from falling over. What is he trying to pull? Illiam measures the left stack, opening his hand to place his thumb at the bottom and his forefinger at the top. Keeping his fingers stiff, he places this hand on top of the center stack. He repeats this with the right stack, placing that hand above the other to estimate the combined height of the 3 stacks. Eh, good enough. He nods approvingly to the bald man, then attacks the center plate like a man who has only ever heard of food. Soooooo goooooood!

After giving the Captain of his parents' trade galley, The Silver Stream, his farewells, Lunarinus walks down the gangplank, and surveys the town. Lunarinus is tall, muscular, and his armor and weapons are well crafted. Across his back is strapped a thick composite bow, a lucerne hammer, and a heavy steel shield embossed with the radiant angelic ankh of his goddess, at his right side strapped to his belt is a quiver full of finely fletched arrows, and on his left, his hand rests easily on the pommel of his scimitar. It is obvious he is the son of a noble, and he carries himself with all the dignity one would expect of his rank and station. He pulls out a sketch map the bishop in Almas gave him, and takes a moment to get his bearings. Goruck, if you would be so kind as to get us some rooms at the Sitting Duck, Kairon and I should head to the church to find Lady Cirthana. She is to be our contact here. We'll meet you in the common room after we've made introductions and discovered what Lady Cirthana would have of us. Try not to kill anyone, even if they attempt to pick your pocket. Many of the locals are hard up, and we don't want to run afoul of the Lumber Consortium our first moments in town. Lunarinus gestures to the north south running road, indicating that that's where Goruck will find the Sitting Duck. He then looks to Kairon, his cleric companion of the faith. Shall we my friend? I believe the church is to the northwest. He nods his head in that direction and awaits Kairon's reply.

Not sure which I'd rather, at this point, Scipio, Kairon says from the dock. Being off that fire-blighted boat has me feeling better than I have in days. Are you sure you want to get straight to business? I mean, I'm ready to find out what's going on, but I'm hungry. And if you follow your nose, those cimma-nun flapjacks ain't in the church building's direction . . . . He regards the shiny warrior quietly. Willing to go along to get along, for the moment. Still tryin' to figure this feller out. But, whichever. And how can a bodyguard bodyguard if he ain't guarding that body? Pick a place; I'm with ya.

Alright, I suppose after that long ship ride I am hungry as well. Business can wait. Instead of waiting for an answer he heads towards the Sitting Duck, and waves for Kairon to follow. Well? We can't have our healer passing out from hunger, now can we?

Lunarinus, just checking, you do realize that the Sitting Duck is a tavern (you can get drinks and probably food, but probably not rent a room) while the Jak'a'napes is an Inn where you can get a room, right near the docks, that also serves food and probably drinks. Just checking that you didn't confuse the two.

Scipio . . . the flapjacks are that way. Kairon gestures to their left. Sitting Duck's too far away . . . yeah. Might pass out from hunger if I gotta walk that far . . . . Kairon squints at the sign for Jak'a'napes. "Jak-uh-nap-eez".

Dolok is looking around and just suddenly stops and stares. That is the most muscular, well-armored & well-armed man I have ever seen! He certainly looks like he could take on a whole company of the Lumber Consortium's goons! Might be a handy one to have around in a scrape, but I don't know, he seems like the type that thinks he's better than everyone else ... What do I care anyways? I may see him some around town, but our paths aren't likely to cross anyways ... Ooooh! there's another fella getting ready to light his pipe! let's light it for him - if he allows of course!

Sorry, didn't realize that. I thought they were both inns. I meant Jak'a'napes. Thanks for catching that, Illiam.

Lunarinus takes a look at his map and the scribbles Bishop Trenysyr wrote on them. Oops, wait, looks like the Sitting Duck isn't an inn, after all, it only has a common room. Best get into the Jak'a'napes, for both food and rooms. I'll get the lay of the land sooner or later. He smiles at Kairon, in that way only nobles can after realizing they've made a mistake. Oh, and don't worry about what you're getting. I'll pay.
