Elf Ranger (Guide, Skirmisher)

"I happily defer to you. When we need a hunter, I will feel more qualified to check his or her skill level."

Male Human Witch 5

"All I can think is o tha known Jhod tha master of the temple could himself join us, we could ask err at least seek his recommendation err word could be sent tha a cleric is needed in tha greenbelt."

Although our good DM suggested Oleg's...I could only think of Jhod who is approxamtely the level we need ; )

Elf Ranger (Guide, Skirmisher)

I tried to refresh my memory, but a search for Jhod yielded no hits.

The more Lothar thought about it, the more he was convinced that he should have been able to disarm the trap he'd set off. And yet he'd told Rhasa that he'd had no experience with them.

Something was going on with him. Perhaps his internal struggle was beginning to spill over, affecting him mentally and physically in a way that it hadn't before.

One thing was for certain. He needed to resolve this. Too many were counting on him to be at his best.

Perhaps what he needed was to break away from the things that he'd bound to himself before becoming a Warden. Or maybe what he really needed was to once and for all choose between the two masters of his soul.

Was he beholden to the Stabbing Beast? Or could he find a better path with the Old Man?

The Beast was about murder and secrets, a dangerous predator that hunted the weak.

The Old Man, on other hand, sought to bring Lothar enlightenment about himself and the world around him while allowing him to walk whatever path he chose.

The Old Man offered knowledge and the freedom to pursue it. The Beast desired to enslave him through secrets that even he was not fully privy to.

Lothar cringed at the thought of it. Of being a prisoner shackled by this seemingly absolute darkness. But if he were being completely honest with himself, the Vudrani had to acknowledge that this was his current state of existence.

The work is the prayer.

The words came back to Lothar, stated to him by the Old Man. At the time, Lothar thought that he had come to an understanding of what that cryptic phrase had meant. But now, he wasn't so sure. Perhaps it meant that the road to Perfection wasn't necessarily a straight one, but was in fact a winding path. A long and arduous one where those that stumbled and fell many times along its length could rise again through hard work and perseverance to still attain the goal.

The thought of that filled Lothar with a sense of hope. For it meant that he could achieve his goals on his own terms, through his own merits. And that held more appeal to him than the chains that the Beast would clasp upon him.

As he and the other Wardens made their way back to Oleg's Trading Post, Lothar resolved to research more of this idea concerning the Winding Path.

Jirani idly rubs at the mare's neck as she trots along, his other hand pressed against his brow to shade his eyes from the sun. It seems to the paladin that the trading post had been on the horizon forever but he knew it was the nature of the open land and the long winding road.

He has been on the move for a long time. Flashes of information, dreams in the night. His blessing. His curse. Jirani scratches at this face as he sighs and urges the horse forward.

The Order had sent word. He had been in Restov for a while. Studying and lending aid as he could. Small ventures. Everything added up. Then there was word. The charter. The Stolen Lands. Trouble with bandits and creatures of various ilk. Words of settlements and pilgrims. The Order had questions and Jirani had a dream.

Jirani had dreamt of a forest and plains. Fire and smoke. Innocent men and women dying, fighting for their last gasp of breath. The fire turned to sand and smoke to wind. Red in the sun the sand blew across the plains and became no more. His dreams were often cryptic. His blessing. His curse.

Jirani sees he is approaching. He wonders if there are watchers or guards. He rides lazily and unassumingly and approaches. He scratches idly at the mare and wonders what is in store.

Elf Ranger (Guide, Skirmisher)

Well. I knew Lothar had a tendency to make me feel like I needed to do more. I didn't realize Jirani would, too.

The elven ranger rides point, easy in the saddle, just enjoying the creak of the leather and the feel of the Sunset's steady gait. She would occasionally look back to make sure the others were still there. Barnabus is uncharacteristically quiet, Lothar as quiet as ever. There's something this time, though. She had seen a similar expression when Calindar would commune with Ol' Deadeye, looking inward to see what Erastil would have him do. Lothar had not professed a relationship with a god that Rhasadilara could recall. She herself is not particularly devout, more tied to the land itself than to its divine protector.

"Maybe he's finding a connection like Calindar had. I think that would be concerning, at least until you got used to it. Well, if he's looking inward, I will be responsible for looking outward. Barnabus will be Barnabus - perhaps he is watching, perhaps he is chatting with his steed. He's here when we need him, I can ask no more."

One more glance back as though to confirm her suspicions, and Rhasa puts her companions' meditations out of her mind so she can concentrate on protecting them all.

Male Human Witch 5

Barnabus spends his time in the saddle hoping that they will be able to locate a divine caster in the near future, he had hoped for a shaman who could eventually be part of a coven, but that seemed unlikely it would be easier to find witches or pupils amongst the boggards than to stumble upon a shaman here in the greenbelt.

"Ave we given thought to findin apt pupils amongst tha settlers? I ave tha desire tah begin trainin a disciple."

Riding to Oleg's.....

Seeing the fort safe ahead of them is a relief to the witch.....

Spotting another rider the witch takes flight and goes over towards the man.

@Jirani
"Well met pilgrim, I am Barbanus o tha Wardens, welcome to tha greenbelt."

Jirani offers a start at the sudden conversation having been too lost in thought about the ride that seemed eternal. Upon hearing the words Jirani shakes to full awareness, seeing a man in flight. Looking about almost stunned the oracle offers an easy smile and laughs at himself, I...um...well met Barnabus. Jirani Shores. Wanderer and, indeed, a pilgrim of sorts. Thank you for the very...unexpected welcome. The paladin rubs a leather gloved hand over his bald head as he continues to chuckle, shaking his head at the sudden company.

Male Human Witch 5

"The others will be joinin us shortly. I sometimes get ahead o myself."

Barnabus finds the man reminds him of Gorgukk and he offers a smile as the others ride up....

Elf Ranger (Guide, Skirmisher)

There he goes again.

Rhasadilara slows down as the witch flies past, marveling at how his horse has become accustomed to the sudden lack of a rider. Smart animal - it follows Sunset and I until I can gather its reins. I imagine I could pay it no attention and it would still be there when we reached our destination, a few paces back.

"We are soon to see our old friends and apparently a new one, Lothar. You seem deep in thought as we ride - are you troubled? Or is this part of your mystic training?" As always, she makes no judgement, she's just honestly curious.

Jirani nods at the stranger, Should we wait here for your friends or proceed to the outpost? Not to be rude but I would love to be done with this ride... The paladin sighs as he pets the mare in what he imagines is a conspiratorial way. The horse *harumphs* in response and Jirani offers a smile to the creature.

Golden Arm's words caused Lothar's face to form a thoughtful grimace that eventually gave way to the slightest of smiles. I don't know if 'mystic' would be appropriate, but I can see how it would taken as such. 'Esoteric', perhaps. But I suppose the two words are close enough to be similar. He continued, as though reciting from rote. Mysticism implies spiritualism, whereas esotericism is more cerebral in nature. But I suppose truly the only thing that separates them is 'faith'. Without it, the words lack anything real beyond their meaning.

And with all of that, I have yet to truly answer your question. The barest trace that was Lothar's smile suddenly became more of a simper as he self-consciously ran a hand across his shaved scalp. I'm far from troubled. I find myself somewhat... elated.

Male Human Witch 5

"Ah so friend Lothar so this is yer happy face, I understand."

Barnabus laughs at his own joke.....often he is the only one who does so...

Elf Ranger (Guide, Skirmisher)

"Well, good. Not to interrupt your elated state, but Barnabus has flown ahead to accost a stranger on the road. No one has drawn weaponry yet, so he must have found a patient soul. Let us see who it is."

She does not, however, speed up Sunset's current pace, fine with observing the two interacting as she approaches with Lothar.

Oleg is delighted to see you arrive, and Simon comes out with mugs of his latest ale... a refreshing brew with a hint of citrus flavour. He says that there have been quite a few colonists through, most farmers and craftspeople looking for places to settle and ply their trades. There is also a human monk called Saji, a tall woman who says that she is on a pilgrimmage, following a winding path.

Jirani nudges his horse towards what seems like an increasingly warm welcome at the trading post, the paladin nods at Barnabus and the group meeting at the post. You are well known around here then? The owners of the post seem to happy to see you all...

Male Human Witch 5

"Oleg an Svetlana were once menaced by bandits, tha matter hast been settled, permanently."

Elf Ranger (Guide, Skirmisher)

Rhasadilara raises a casual hand in greeting as they approach Barnabus' latest friend near the gate of the trading post.

Hearing Barnabus' comment, she nods, "Barnabus and Lothar here are two of the charter holders for the colonization of this area. We found that we had common cause against a group of bandits that were preying on the trading post and others in the area."

"Allow me to stable your horse while Barnabus gives you the tour."

Later, she indicates Simon, "Sometimes, a bandit simply lacks a better option. Simon happens to be a marvelous and creative brewer, but he was among the bandits. We gave him an option to die as a bandit or live as a productive member of the area. His choice benefits all of us. Others made a different choice, as Barnabus indicates." Her eyes are very hard and reflective for a moment, but then the smile returns.

After stabling his mule, Lothar made his way around the grounds of the trading post, always amazed that he and his fellow Wardens had survived yet another day's venture.

But there was more to his stroll.

As he meandered about, first within the wall's of the trading post, then beyond them, Lothar's mind raced as he tried to work out more to the concept of the Winding Path.

I've been trying to approach this as if I were a monk. But though it would seem that the basis for much of my training is centered..., no, rooted in asceticism, I lack the proper temperament to be a proper ascetic. And yet, I too would walk the path toward Perfection. And I would not be setting down this road on my own. I have to consider Seth's place in all of this as well since I am his instructor.

And as these thoughts were running through his head, Lothar would take time to watch the others as they went about their lives, traveling down their own roads.

The only difference between them and the Vudran was that he was taking the time to look for the signs.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

In his prowls, Lothar comes across Saji performing something that appears a cross between a martial arts kata (form) and a dance. She's very graceful and extremely supple!

Sinon is delighted at your reception of his latest brew and speaks of plans to deliver barrels to the new settlement. A fellow who passed through here a few days ago, an elf called Garrard, expressed a desire to set up a tavern there but said that he is no more than a workmanlike brewer (being better at distilling spirits) and would prefer to have some good ale to offer!

Another new arrival is a herbalist called Digby Heathcote. An unlikely-looking settler, he's nearsighted and walks with a limp. He says that he is researching the use of sap from a shambling mound, which he believes is effective in cultivating some of the herbs he wishes to grow, and he is looking for some adventurous types to acquire some for him... he's willing to pay. He's waiting for the next caravan to head to the settlement, he intends to set up business there.

A tall blond fellow called Jon has taken up residence here. At the moment he's working as a stable-hand but has expressed an interest in learning how to cook.

Male Human Witch 5

Barnabus smiles his easy smile knowing that his companions are aware that he has come to enjoy the solitude of the skies without it being an offense to anyone.

He sees it from up in the high places the full expanse of the greenbelt and the people who have come to work the lands. He knows that the new man follows the straight and narrow path, that the elf follows her mystery path, Lothar's path winds like a stream.

He has seen them, from the sky in the very landscape of the greenbelt, The straight path of the cliff rising from the plains, the winding path of the river, and Rasha's path like the game trails and the dance of predator and prey. He himself like Gozreh is meant to shape and sharpen, protect and prohibit. Though they know it not the balance of the entire lands depends upon his ability to act in a path free from it all.

When the time comes he will hold a most sacred duty, it will be his hand that protects the kingdom at prices none other would be willing to pay.....

"A cast expanse awaits us, let us not tarry overlong at Oleg's."

As the witch takes to the skies Jirani nods to himself, content to have met the eccentric fellow as he himself moves farther into the outpost and begins the process of mingling.

Jirani makes sure to move to each person and introduce himself as well as learning more about the various needs of the community and the settlement that has taken root to the south, at the mention of "shambling mound sap" the paladin offers to keep his eyes open.

As the people bustle about Jirani sets about making arrangements for food, a stable spot and a place to rest. He watches as much as he talks and waits, expecting his sense of destiny to guide his hand as it so often does...

The Vudrani assumed the lotus pose and watched the monk perform her routine, admiring the flexibility on display as she moved. The woman's lightness was a stark contrast to his own aggressive style.

She was the unfolding wind to his unblinking flame and the realization of this pleased him greatly. It was plain to see that there was much for him to learn from her.

The question was whether or not she would teach him.

And so, Lothar maintained both his position and distance, waiting patiently for her to acknowledge his existence.

Male Human Witch 5

Barnabus had settled on the roof of Oleg's admiring the mans persistence in patching the roof. He went over each area looking for any leaks, it seemed Oleg had made the roof fit to be a boat it was so well protected from the elements.

He sees that the men man Jirani is a man who likes people which is good for one who follows is life call.

Lothar he notices watching the display of the woman, what ever she named her movements they were more like the currents of the invisible wind than anything else he had ever seen.

Catching his interest was a rare feat for anyone and so he jumps from the top of Oleg's using his feather fall hex he lands lightly on the ground and approaches the woman....

"Beg pardon, when is it you have flown or come to know tha subtle shifts o tha wind?"

Elf Ranger (Guide, Skirmisher)

Rhasadilara respects the traveler's preference to care for his own horse and proceeds to take care of Sunset and Barnabus' animal since he was still off meeting people. Once done, she moves through the courtyard quietly, acknowledging those that pay her the same courtesy, and seeks out Svetlana.

Male Human Witch 5

Later on in Olegs at the table reserved for the wardens over Svetlana's well prepared meal.....

"So welcome Jirani. I answered tha call from tha swamplands beyond here tha hook tongue slough, I was raised by a coven o witches an treated poorly, fer years they joked o fattenin me up fer tha pot, but I was too thin, err needed fer doin work. Eventually I learned tha secrets o witchery, apparently even have won't eat another witch."

As he sat and waited, Lothar was struck with odd notion. One that caused him to unfold from his pose and stand up.

He didn't take time to analyze what he felt, but rather just acted on sheer impulse.

The Vudrani unleashed his inner dragon, dashing in with left knee leading. As expected, the monk's sense of awareness enabled her to deftly sidestep his charge, only to come around in a circular stepping pattern so that she stood facing his back.

That one move had the effect of making Lothar feel like a novice. But he was determined to land just one hit on her. The magician launched a jumping reverse hook kick that she avoided by leaning back before ducking downward into a low stance. From that position, the monk looked at him with an approving smile as he squared his shoulders and stepped forward on his right foot while keeping his left foot in the back, toes pointing at an acute angle with a slight raise in the heel and both knees slightly bent. With a roll of his shoulders, he brought his elbows close and his hands were held in loose fists near the temples. Lothar's body had a slight hunch as he squared up with the monk.

For a seemingly long moment, the two held their respective poses before the magician took the initiative, coming at the woman quickly to drive her back. He kept moving, not wishing to be a sitting target for the taller monk. He used quick jabs then fell back, both to gauge his distance while looking for an opening to attack.

Lothar kept up the tactic, moving forward then retreating back. But if it bothered the monk at all, her serene expression did not show any sign of it. She merely glided to and fro, with an occasional quarter circular step to the left or right that would put her on his flank. And each time, she made no move to attack that exposed area when it was presented to her.

Without striking a single blow and by using only her grace and suppleness, the monk had shown Lothar all of the holes in his defense. He ceased his attack and calmed his inner dragon before assuming his natural stance to signal an end to their impromptu spar. The Vudrani then performed namaste without uttering a single word.

Whew! I think that came out better than I expected, not having written something like this in a while. I'm sure you guys will let me know what you think. ;)

Elf Ranger (Guide, Skirmisher)

Excellent. Just excellent.

Rhasadilara does her best impression of the cowboy sitting on the boardwalk, hat pulled low, watching the foot traffic through the post. Now, if only she had a hat.

Thank you! I think the main thing I have to remind myself of every time I write these kinds of posts is that Lothar stands five foot tall. His player, however, stands a foot and a half taller, so I have to envision everything he does as though I'm shorter than I actually am. I always assume that anyone he faces is taller than him unless its fairly obvious that's not the case.

Excellent writing, if I may say so...

When Lothar stops and bows namaste, Saji ceases her dance and bows in similar style, except just one hand is upright in the classic pose with the other one cupping it. She raises her eyebrows then cracks a grin.

"I had not expected one with which to spar as I practiced my kembangan, for your contributions I thank you. Under which guru did you train? Your style is one unfamiliar to me."

She then smiles at Barnabus.

"Your pardon, I did not intend to ignore or slight you. I come from a jungle land far from here, which is where I learned my art. Now I travel to see the world and to learn from it and of it."

Male Human Witch 5

Barnabus offers a bow.

"Long has it been since Lothar has had an opportunity tah be challenged in his prowess, I myself ave found no talent fer such arts, but I see tha complexity within it an see beyond tha physical movements to tha essence. One day I shall bring a great windstorm upon Lothar and watch him ride it."

Barnabus bows again.....

"I myself sometimes take long to answer as I am deep in my thoughts an must get to tha stopping point an then turn mah focus an awareness back to tha external."

As Jirani idles through the camp he cannot help but be caught up in the display of martial and physical prowess taking part within the outposts walls. Approaching the pair the paladin watches them move in something approaching synchronicity a play of the body yet still all based in reaction. As they end Jirani cannot help but clap and offer an appraising smile and nod. Crossing his arms he simply lets out a breath , Stunning!

At Barnabus the oracle can merely chuckle, And I found your display of flight impressive! My surprised to find that you travel in the companionship of other gifted allies. I believe I was sent here to meet you. The paladin cannot help but lean forward again towards the two monks, Well done. Truly impressive.

Though her use of the term guru was a pleasant surprise to Lothar, causing him to smile, he immediately responded: I have, of late, found my past memories to be untrustworthy. As such, I cannot honestly answer your questions. However, I will say that I am merely celaa, a student, on the journey to gain knowledge. But alas, though I have tried to walk a straight path, my road, it seems, is meant to be a winding one. As such, I seek to adapt myself to this new challenge, for there are those here who have come to depend on me, even as I have come to depend on them. As he spoke that last bit, the Vudrani's eyes darted away from Saji and briefly came to rest on his partner, Rhasadilara Goldenbough.

Feeling somewhat flustered, he returned his attention back to the monk and continued. I must admit that when Oleg mentioned you, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Or that you were even what he claimed. So I must ask, what brings one such as you, a yōd'dhā sann'yāsī, a warrior monk, to a faraway place such as this?

I think this is the most Hindi... erm, Vudrani, I've had Lothar speak since this started. I know I got celaa right... I'm just not so sure about "yōd'dhā sann'yāsī" though Google Translate swears up and down that it means warrior monk. I guess I have to go with it for now.

Male Human Witch 5

"Remind me I need to speak to tha man about tha shambles."

Barnabus looks for the man and invites him to dinner....

Elf Ranger (Guide, Skirmisher)

Interested in the stranger's actions - and fearing he might be cause for concern - Rhasadilara stands up and stretches, moving to keep Jirani in sight.

Seeing his appreciation and delight for whatever he's found, she continues, curious to know what it is, just in time to step into view as Lothar's gaze seeks her out. Eyebrow raised, she leans against the wall of the structure and watches Lothar and the two newcomers.

Wonder who she is. She moves like Lothar does, more like a cat than a human. Maybe even more than he does. I hope she's not a threat - she's probably every bit as dangerous as my friend in a fair fight - and she may not fight fair. And what is this good-natured fellow's game? Spy? Wanderer? Runaway? Criminal?

Note that Rhasa missed the entire martial display and much of the conversation, so she's in the dark about Saji.

I think we're transitioning to the dinner. When I started my post, Barnabus hadn't posted yet. I didn't realize what he had done because I don't use a word document when I come up with my posts, but, rather, come on to the forums, type what I type and spend time trying to clean up and edit what I've written to get my point across. The process may take me a while but I find it more comfortable doing it this way.

In all seriousness, Rhasadilara nods in agreement. "Best we wash up."

Svetlana is presiding over quite a feast, clearly delighted to have the Guardians back at the trading post.

Once you are seated and served she asks what your plans are.

"We also require either yerself or Oleg to be present fer our plannin, as we expect more an more settlers, also tha guard captian."
