How delightful! I have just the one - she's 16 now, and still quite wonderful. Busy with exams, in the UK system there are major exams at the end of 'secondary school' (K11 equivalent) then students can either leave education & find work or move on to 'sixth form' (equivalent to the Junior & Senior years of a US high school) to study further. My Christine has decided to study this level at a local community college. In the meantime, she's planning to attend an EFY conference (the LDS amongst us may know what that is!) in July. So there's a lot going on.

On a game topic: I am quite saddened to realize that I took Power Attack and lack the Strength score to actually use it. (She was originally a Dex build, but I'm reshaping her, thus the retraining requests for her feats.) I plan to simply play her as unable to use the feat until her strength is high enough either through self-improvement (aka at 8th level) or someone provides her with a bonus point of strength (she's only one point shy of being able to use it). So potions of Bull's Strength and the generosity of her friends are what she will rely on until 8th level, I guess. Right now, she should have five feats thanks to class bonuses, etc, but she only has access to three due to retraining and prerequisites. *Slaps forehead* This is why I feel like my characters are rarely optimal, getting myself into situations like this.
Just wanted to share this in case an inquisitive ally noted my Power Attack issue.
Back to real life - congratulations, Gorguk, that's really cool. Seems like there are a lot of people around me - online and off - that are expanding their families right about now. Amazes me how many women at the gym are expecting - and still putting in a workout that would kill me. *shakes head* Amazing.

Aargh! Rhasa' had better hit the gym and do some weights!
I am past it on the baby front, alas. Not that there is room in our house for another one... didn't quite know how we'd fit one in, ended up losing the dining area which is now my corner, & Christine got the room that was my den.

After a near two year drought in job opportunities, I finally can say that once more I am amongst the gainfully employed! I'm not sure as to what shift I'll be working just yet, though I'm training on 2nd currently. As soon as I find out, I'll let you guys know.
Blayde MacRonan |
My training period, rather than being on second shift as initially reported, has been on first due to a couple of people on that shift going on vacation Thursday and Friday of this week. This has effectively wreaked all kinds of havoc in my house as we were prepared to deal with one time but not the other. This will more than likely affect when I'm able to post in the game, but not my ability to do so.
Other than that, everything is going great! ;)

To let you know, we are packing up our bicycles for few days on a rail-to-trail in Iowa. I don't know how much Internet access we will have over the next week, so please don't let Rhasadilara hold things up - please feel free to take actions on her behalf. Have a great Memorial Day (if you are in the States) and a great week (wherever you might find yourself)!
Megan Robertson |
Sounds fun.
Here, school is out for a week, but my Chrissi is in the middle of exams AND has some coursework to complete so it won't be all fun and games.
I am falling asleep right now. I was due to teach the Relief Society lesson & had the assigned one prepared... then got to church to find that the Sunday School president was not there so had to teach adult Sunday School pretty much cold. Just as well I read through each week even if I am not expecting to teach!

What do you think the first couple months of buildings should be? General small stuff such as tavern, fletcher, butcher, blacksmith, baker, combined with land increases and farms to cut down on consumption?
Others please feel free to weigh in as well.

A more relevant question is: are we using just the initial kingdom building rules from Kingmaker or will we be using the updated ones from Ultimate Campaign? I haven't received my physical copy yet but hopefully my PDF will be arriving today (had to take care of some banking matters).
Calinder Surital |
I'd say we need to make sure that the basic needs of our new community are met, and then expand from there. I like Gorguk's initial suggestions so far.
We might add general store or trading post of some kind for provisions. I certainly don't want to put Oleg out of business, but some where close that those who settle this area can go to for what they need. Perhaps our trading post could receive items through Oleg when getting supplies from the north, and then if we can make some connections to the lands to the south of us, then we could export those items through Oleg to the north.

I was looking at the book of the river kingdoms when I was making suggestions. Once we have things figured out as far as exactly what we have to work with I can make a proposal with Cal for each month of kingdom building and see what everyone thinks. It's possible that we could get a month of kingdom building in each day that way if everyone is ok with the suggestions/proposals.
Rhasadilara Goldenbough |
Rhasa's not into the kingdom-building, so I think I will largely be a listener on those discussions - but I have Ultimate Campaign sitting next to my computer as I type this (!) and would be happy to be a resource librarian while you more patient folk make your plans.
And our trip was great - despite issues with the equipment (ever had a bicycle tire blow out while you are standing next to the bike?) and the weather (basically three days of rain, lots of flash flood and 'regular' flood warnings). The trail runs through several small towns and it was very cool to see how they all do their thing to promote it - it's an asset for all of them, made more valuable by their work. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in rural America and bicycle time - which might be a small group, but hey, it's highly recommended! ;-)
Lothar Narda |
Lothar isn't into the kingdom building aspect of Kingmaker either, but I need to become as familiar with it as possible as it will be used at some point in my current campaign so I will be paying attention to it if only to understand its implementation.
Megan Robertson |
OK. At the fort, there is nothing but the fort. Oleg does have an anvil out back but isn't very interested in smithcraft himself. The fort is far enough away that you could establish a trading post without harming Oleg's business too much...
How about giving me a 'wish list' of what skills you would like the colonists to have? No promises, but I need to work out who is coming & what they are bringing to the party so I might as well know what you are hoping for!
Barnabus |
The basics how many people can live in the fort? If we assume settlers will want to chose places to settle, we should have some method of awarding or granting lands to farmers and designating crops.
If so we might want to order a couple of mules and plows which we can give to the farmers....
Other than that a magistrate or sheriff for the fort who can handle business while we are away.
Perhaps another brewery or an expansion of the witch's brew from Oleg's.
A blacksmith
A baker
A general store
A jail or stocks (at least)
A stable, w/ stablehands and a ferrer
.....
Gorguk |
I could be wrong, but the mechanics for the kingdom building have the rules for housing included for the most part. Certain buildings need homes nearby for them to function. We purchase the homes and the city/colonists/workers then build them and any other purchased building as well. Whatever building is purchased it is assumed that the appropriate people come to work there. I believe that each small square in a city stands for 250 people. Thus if we build a home and a baker in month 1, that is 500 people that have come to our city from settlers or immigrants or families expanding. If we expand our kingdom by claiming the surrounding area that also is 250 people added to our kingdom in the form of farmers, road workers, hunters, etc..
Please let me know if I am misundersatnding the rules.
As for the settlers themselves, skills needed would be construction, demolition, and harvesting skills.
Megan Robertson |
I am imagining the colonists arriving as a 'wagon train' - sort of like settlers heading out West to homestead in the historical US, and carrying a lot of the equipment that they'd need, prepared to make the rest, build their own homes, etc., once they have land to settle on.
But I am open to suggestion if you think something else would be more appropriate. I've not run a game quite like this before either!
Rhasadilara Goldenbough |
I was picturing them arriving with their mules in tow. I don't think the Wardens would be buying the materials for the settlement as much as facilitating it for those arriving.
Those that we would like to see earlier? Farmer, miller, shopkeeper/merchant, blacksmith, farrier all seem like people that would contribute early.
Lothar Narda |
Do we have something like purchase points (domain points) to use? I haven't cracked open my Ultimate Campaign yet, so I have no clue. If this is the case (that we have points to spend), then how much are the buildings in question? I'd look, but I'm currently at work so I can't look it up myself.
Megan Robertson |
Right now it's the height of the ENnies judging so as it's not entered (published after the deadline) I haven't time to read it for a week or so... do you lot want to use it?
And I have an interview next Wednesday to prepare for (and Sunday School to teach this week as well... Word of Wisdom.)
Megan Robertson |
The Sunday School lesson went extremely well, thank the Holy Spirit.
Every time I teach I get humbling amounts of praise for my teaching... now to use the same techniques (listen to the Spirit, use the resources, teach with authority) tomorrow. :)
Megan Robertson |
Didn't get the job, though :(
Annoying thing, the other candidates all HAD jobs already & were looking to move. Sometimes you just want to tell them to push off and leave vacancies for the people who desperately need work. Not to put too fine a point on it, the Church is making life possible at the moment.
Megan Robertson |
One word: ENnies.
We have just, this past 10 minutes, completed our selection of this year's nominations. Now I can take a deep breath and look at other things (um, including an advance copy of Shadowrun 5e to be reviewed ready for its launch on 11 July...).
