Varrel is glad that only Majenko can hear his mental sigh.
{Very well, Ashe. I will come...but I find her..disconcerting. I will remain silent but if you need magical aid, you will have it.}

Varrel does likewise as Ashe and removes his Scimitar, bow and other weapons. He leaves his Cestus on as through removing the gauntlets is too much bother but if directed by the maidens removes those as well.

He stands behind Ashe and awaits the word to proceed.

{Is it sorted now? Everyone happy? I feel a little strange about the telepathy. If we have a spell to detect magic, might the queen and her guards have something of the sort too? Either way, I suppose it is best to let her believe she knows what she thinks she knows so that we can know that she believes she knows what she thinks she knows. Although, if anyone's listening in, now they know we know what she believes she knows what she thinks she knows.} Una shrugs nonchalantly as everyone gets positioned.

She stands at attention near the doctor, playing the part of the obedient bodyguard.

Liberty's Edge

Female Depemds on the game system (human in the real world)

The Grey Maiden that hasn't spoken yet supervises the collection of weapons from those who are going to meet Her Majesty.

Ishani Dhatri says that he wants to discuss the plague with Doctor Davaulus, but will come and speak with the Queen if you want him to... he has, after all, been treating sufferers of the plague so has first-hand knowledge.

Those seeking audience are led up to the castle's third floor, where the Crimson Throne awaits. Here they are greeted by a beautiful woman dressed in magnificent full plate armour and bearing a large sword. It's Sabina Merrin, the queen's handmaiden, bodyguard, and closest companion.

Ashe:
She registers as neutral.

She smiles. "Ah, welcome. The page said that you have some information regarding this terrible plague. Her Majesty will welcome your input as she coordinates efforts to save the city!"

You are ushered into the royal presence. Queen Ileosa, a radiant beauty, sits upon the Crimson Throne, wearing a silver gown that sparkles in the candlelight. The throne room itself (for those who haven't visited before) is pristine but strangely empty — an open area with a vaulted ceiling, stained glass windows of past kings and queens looking down from the eastern wall, and crimson tapestries hanging along the others. An immense fireplace offers additional light and heat to the hall, and a silk carpet provides a gently arching path to the throne's base.

Three very concerned-looking courtiers (Ashe recognises them as self-styled 'elder statesmen' from the previous reign who were always promoting themselves as the late king's closest advisors) stand near the throne. Queen Ileosa waves a hand at them dismissively.

"Be off with you! You have nothing to contribute unlike these loyal citizens, who have already been out and about seeking to combat the plague!" She turns her dazzling smile on you all.

"Thank you for coming. What can you tell me about this dreadful plague? I've already sent for the best physicians I can muster..."

******************

Outside in the courtyard, Doctor Davaulus is clearly getting impatient. He speaks to one of the Grey Maidens, loudly enough that Una, Shakhan and anyone else still there can hear.

"Where are the Guard? Did not the Queen herself issue commands placing you good ladies in charge and requiring them to assist me?"

Varrel walks instep behind Ashe, hopefully looking the obedient soldier to his 'Knight captain', had he presented himself as a spellcaster the last time?
Hopefully not, certainly that was not the image he hoped to portray.
Walking in his leather leggings and greaves and chain shirt and cestus (it seemed the Grey Maidens had not considered it worth removing either)
he was dressed as a duelist or fencer might armor themselves. He hoped he appeared just that, an agile fighter with no magical skills.

He focused his gaze first upon Sabina and then the queen when she came into view, these 2 most concerned him and so he focused the required time to discern the schools and strength of whatever magic was upon them.
Then he simply waited for his 'Captain' to speak....

Ashe follows the page, pleased his Bladed Scarf was not removed. Majenko perched upon his shoulder his head looking about with interest {as likely no mere house-drake had even gained access to the Queen's chambers within Castle Korvosa itself}.

Majenko's own telepathic voice is heard, {My hatch-mates will envy the tales I will have of the inside of the Big Stone lair of the Korvosan rulers!}

Ashe mental send to Varrel, {My apoligies friend Varrel - I know you ill like being disarmed around 'nobility', thank you for forbearance... I shall make this brief as possible!}

At the sight of Sabina Ashe genuinely smiles for her and approaches her giving a crisp respectful salute followed with an equally respectful and curtly bow, "Well met 'Dame' Merrin! You are radiant as always milady! I'm sorry we must come bearing such... troubling news, but evil never sleeps... so... neither must we charged with the safety of our city and Queen. I've seen your new 'Grey Maidens'... impressive, and lovely. I'm sure the Queen's protection is well in hand with you and your 'maidens' at the guard!"

Diplomacy:{Korvosan} 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21
Pro {Courtesan}: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
- Ashe is being charming and courtly without being ingratiating treating the Queen's royal Guardswoman as an equal and respected defender of the Korvosan people's interests. Genuinely trying to gain her cordial friendship. He actually believes what he is telling her... or at least hopes its true.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
-But indeed Ashe is trying to read her to see her reaction to his words and his party. He can detect no evil from her true... but her intentions and how nervous or shocked by what he is about to report is important to him as well. He is trying to read her general reaction to the party... is she honestly pleased to see us?

Entering the throne room Ashe give it a casual glance having been here on several official occasions he is familiar with it.

But he closely regards the three 'elder statesmen' that are arrayed here in the Queen's presence recognizing them in turn - 'Magistrate' Garrick Trann "the most hated man in Korvosa" {Magistrate of Commerce} the tax collector, 'Senior Arbiter' Zenobia Zenderholm "The Hanging Judge" {Judge and middle-ranking cleric of Abadar}, and... Ashe notices with a grimace of disproval "Guildmaster" Boule {Guildmaster of the ONLY legal Guild in all Korvosa - The Cerulean Society}, the guildmaster of the Thieves Guild.

[OOC: I hope you don't mind me adding some color to those present Megan]

But, sighing, 'politics makes strange bed-fellows' - Ashe bows politely in all needed respectful manner to the 'elder statesmen' and 'Judgewoman' arrayed at the Queen's presence, not seeking to isolate any faction of court.

"Good morning Statesmen and Judgewoman of Korvosa! I hope this day finds you well... these are indeed troubling times for our city, but do not loose hope. The defenders of this city are hard at work, as I'm sure you are as well. We shall prevail."

Kno {Nobility}: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Detect Evil - Passively on the Three statesmen. Ashe is pretty sure Boule is evil but he is just being thorough - This is KORVOSA! Where devils both hidden by illusion and shapechange can be around every corner! Mortals not powerful or strongly aligned will not radiate evil.. but ANY devil or evil supernatural creature hidden in human disguise or even under illusion WILL! Unless specific magics or misdirection are used to hide their natures. This is just precautionary information Ashe will keep in mind for later use... never hurts to know who or what he's dealing with!

Majenko takes flight from Ashe's shoulder flying back the Throne Room's immediate door entrance to perch upon some decorative statuary in the throne room to keep everyone in telepathic reach { 60'ft radius - sphere } and not be near the Queen who he thinks is guilty... despite Ashe's need of proof!

Having addressed them politely Ashe proceeds to the throne approaching to Queen Ileosa he kneels to one knee setting his Griffin-Creasted White-plumed helm upon the floor beside him, his head bowed...

"Light shine upon thee your Highness, my 'Queen' Ileosa Arabasti! Rule seems to suit thee well, your Majesty... you are beautiful and radiant even though dire times are upon us! I have grave news to report on the assigned tasks you have set our Mercenary assets to handle and we have not ceased with the rise of this 'Blood Veil' plague. I thank thee for thy trust and faith in our effort Your Majesty... and beg forgiveness for the lateness of our returning to personally report upon our efforts. We trust that 'Field Marshal' Cressida Kroft kept you well informed of our progress... "

Ashe looks up to meet the Queen's gaze...
Diplomacy: {Korvosans} 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Kno {Nobility}: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Pro {Courtesan}: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Move Action: Detect Evil - Instant 3rd information on the Queen herself!
- Noting the Queen's annoyed dismissal of the Elder-Statesmen, Ashe plays along with her acting the part of the trusted special agent of the crown to seems as if he agrees with the Queen. Yes this is a change in politeness at the turn of a hat to the statesmen.. an often trait in courtly functions. Smile at everyone... promise nothing. But he has a purpose in this... he wishes to portray that the Mercenaries have no suspicions of the Queen's involvement in any wrong-doing.

Across the telepathic link Ashe speaks to Varrel, {Varrel, I'm going to try to get the Queen to leave the throne to talk to me with [i]'Dame' Sabina Merrin away from the 'Elder Statesmen' near the stained glass windows as if I have some very private intel for her personally - which I do in fact. Leave the how to me... please scan EVERYTHING! The Throne, the Queen, the Room, the Stained Glass Windows, even the Statesmen! I want to know if there is ANY potential magical influence behind the scenes going on in here!}[/i]

Ashe stands tucking his griffin-creasted, large white-plumed helm under his left arm and looking distrustfully at the elder statesmen - especially, Boule Ashe speaks softly to the Queen, "My Queen, I have secrets to reveal and... plots to inform thee of..."

He casts a knowing glance at Boule taking a slow cautious step forward... but still at least 15'ft from her royal person.

"Will you... walk with me, briefly, your highness...?"

Ashe politely offers his elbow as a respectful courtly escort to 'Queen' Ileosa and gestures to 'Dame' Sabina Merrin indicating a silent request for her follow closely guarding her queen in his presence to a place near the spectacular artistry of the stained glass windows a little to the side of the throneroom out of direct line of hearing from the arrayed nobility and elder statesmen.

Diplomacy: {Korvosan} 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
Pro {Courtesan}: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Kno {Nobility}: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Bluff: {untrained} 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
- Ashe it trying a bit of subtle court play here. He is playing off the Queen's words... 'You have nothing to contribute unlike these loyal citizens', taking from that inference that she would like to display to the 'elder statesmen' that she does not need them to govern that she has assets unassociated with their influence... thereby lowering their perceived importance... and equally their influence in court. Ashe is taking advantage of that to do some subtle manipulation of his own. He wants the queen to leave the throne so Varrel can scan it without her near to see if there is magic upon it that might be influencing her. But there is also a secondary effect for house Whiteplume it raises their perceived importance to the Crown and thus their courtly influence in the eyes of the the Elder Statesmen... capital his mother can spend. Also, Ashe wants the Queen in motion so if some illusion or static magical effect that someone is using to manipulate the queen might be revealed or noticed... again by Varrel's senses. Ashe will also passively scan the throne for evil. Finally Ashe is trying to read the Queen ... is she actually pleased to see the party or is she suspicious of their presence? does she actually want to diminish the percieved importance of the 'elder Statesmen'? Also, does she have any suspicion that Ashe is indeed the Grey Eagle!
Of course, Ashe is turning on the charm full power... but tinged with an urgency that only the queen hear their dire information!

Varrel is already in action, at attention but with eyes wandering, as a fighting man would immediately size up a room of strangers.
He didn't bother to try at hide his 'gawking', because getting caught would look suspicious and further, the room and company would indeed seem grand to one seemingly not used to such distinguished surrounds.

{Agreed, Gronk. It seems like they might have an interesting conversation. I'll attempt to remember every detail of it to relay to you all once we're back to stable ground once again. You do the same for me in the throne room. The gods forbid it, but we may need a tactical sense of the room at some point in the near or distant future.}

Una watches the doctor and the priest carefully, attempting to mentally record the details of their conversation.

Have not heard from Shakhan in a long time. Hope he's alright.

Results of detect evil and other checks:

Queen Ileosa: checks out as LN... but slightly odd, nothing you can put your finger on, but almost as if its an overlay... and there's some magic running around her.

Sabina Merrin: LN. She stays pretty close to the Queen at all times, hovering almost. Her plate and sword radiate magic.

Garrick Tann: NG rather to your surprise. No magic items. He seems concerned but somewhat out of his depth, and was relieved when you lot came in.

Zenobia Zenderholm: LG (strongly so). Holy symbol appears magical. She's offended by the Queen's dismissal and shows it.

Guildmaster Boule: NE. There's something magic about his hands - either those supple skin-tight black leather gloves or maybe he has a ring or two.

Queen Ileosa looks somewhat surprised at Ashe's invitation to walk with him, and hesitates momentarily before arising and accepting his arm. Despite the invitation to come along, Sabina glares!

Outside, Una strains her ears to hear the conversation between Doctor Davaulus and Ishani Dhatri... then Ishani calls her over to join them! Shakhan tags along, not happy for Una to be on her own with them.

"Please join us, Lady Therlmagne, you are an observant woman and may have spotted things that I missed. As I was saying, Doctor, my first encounter with this plague was a young woman living in a poorer area of town..." He goes on about Brienna Soldado's case and how he had struggled to treat her until you all turned up, and continues to speak of those who'd presented at the Bank of Abadar for healing.

Doctor Davaulus looks thoughtful. A Chelaxian in his mid-40s, the doctor is deliberate in his speech and conducts himself like a concerned father, taking a genuine interest in assuaging the concerns and maladies of those around him.

"I served Queen Ileosa's family in Egorian, the capital of Cheliax, for many years," he says. "When she contacted me a few days ago, begging for my assistance on her city's behalf, I couldn't refuse. After accepting her gracious offer of magical transport to Korvosa, I've spent my time assembling a group of the city's most talented healers to help stem the tide of the spreading plague. We are about to set out to see what we can do... when that escort arrives."

The queen is odd though she has a magical aura ABOUT her but it is not focused on an object. She may be under a spell but I haven't picked the shool. It could be a complusion or something simply defensive, the fact I can't place it worries me..}

The motivations for those reactions could be very informative.

It is subtle and difficult, but Gronk is trying to determine the reason for a couple of those reactions.

Does Queen Ileosa seem surprised that Ahse is being polite, just surprised that Ashe is so forward with someone so far above his station, something else?
sense motive vs Ileosa: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29.

Is Sabina jealous of anyone else having any influence with Ileosa (personal), does she consider him a threat (professional), something else?
sense motive vs. Sabina: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26

Anything odd about Zenderholm's holy symbol (other than the magic that I can't currently see).
knowledge religion: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13

Ashe is the perfect gentleman as he walks slowly with the lovely Queen on his arm his voice is low but serious and he continues to keep looking at both the Queen and Sabina as his words are for both of them. Ashe mentally notes Sabina's reaction to the Queen's accepting his courtly offer of a private escort... {..Hmmm. Does Sabina have designs upon the Queen's affections! That was... unexpected!}

So Ashe will ajust his approach... slightly... he had intended to play up his courtesan profession by lightly... subtly flirting with the Queen to make it seem he was smitten somewhat with the Queen's majesty and beauty all the more to show her she was above suspicion... but he ponders with Sabina's reaction that might isolate her favor... not something he wants to do. So Ashe shifts approach slightly playing up the seriousness of his report inferring in his manner that his intent is only to make sure that ONLY the Queen and her most trusted guardian can here the dark secrets he is about to reveal he does this by keeping his expression grim and showing little mirth in his tone and speech to intimate no desires for the Queen in Sabina's eyes.

"Forgive my impertinence your highness... but there may be those in court who do not have your interests at heart ad I wanted none of what I said to reach their ears for what they might report to their masters."

"I'll be as detailed with pertinent facts in my report as possible. first our efforts to find out who was behind the rable-rousing at your ascension to the throne then our recent shocking and disturbing discoveries on this plague epidemic."

"On the matter of the the riots, most of the perpetrators were those merely seeking an opportunistic outlet to make trouble... nothing more than common scum and those eager to make trouble... nothing more that a show of force from Korvosan Guard or Hellknights could not handle but, three specific cases bear your attention!"

"The first and most disturbing is the case of Korvosan Guard deserters who left their posts during the crisis to open a charity butchery called 'All the World's Meat' during the riots ostensibly to provide food for the poor. Their leader a then 'Watch Sergeant' Verik Vancaskerkin, was a simple fellow duped it seems into deserting his post on the 'advice' of his girlfriend. As it turns out the 'All the World's Meat' was a cover for targeted assassinations which his men - without any knowledge of Varik were hired to dispose of those they were paid a hefty amount to make 'disappear'. These schemers used the butchery to cover distribution of their victim's flesh to the unsuspecting citizenry. We stopped these villains the brought them to justice... but what should interest you your highness was the fact that Verik's girlfriend was Vimanda Arkona. Verik confessed that it was she who suggested he abandon his position for his 'charity' work. Verik was a simple dupe... but whatever this Arkona woman was plotting she went through all the trouble to leave a feindish spy in his company in the form of a silver dagger. The dagger was confiscated when we arrested the deserters and oddly it radiated evil. When we took it to have it identified it revealed itself to be a Raktavarna! That is a vile creation made by sacrificing both a serpent and a prince or warlord, bound to the will of its creator to serve as a spy, and to insinuate its thoughts into the mind of whomsoever it is planted upon! It would seem far more effort to watch this dupe than one would put to such a simple desertion ... me thinks this was the start of a plot to destabilize your throne that fortunately we stopped at its root. The Arkonas are a respected and powerful house, not one to be trifled with as their foes... end up disappearing... but none can deny they have coveted the throne for decades. It is also no small secret the Arkonas have their hand in every form of vice and criminal activity to be found in Korvosa! Everyone knows though cannot necessarily prove that the Arkona control the Cerulean Society... the only guild in Korvosa... and Boule is their man... whoever he directly answers to they are undoubtedly Arkonas! You should watch the Arkona your highness they were not necessarily behind all the trouble but they were ploting to take some advantage of it. I wanted none of what I told you of our suspicions to reach their ears through their lapdog at court - Boule!"

"The next threat we dealt with was the 'Chelaxian Ambassador' Darvayne Gios Amprei. He was duplicitous in trying to sow discontent with his masters in Egorian to spark a trade war with Korvosa by sending them false reports of things going on here in Korvosa... all to the purpose of taking advantage of the hurt inflicted upon the commerce of Korvosa for his own personal financial benefit! We discovered he frequented "Eel's End", a den of vice and depravity known for its exotic and frequently boarder-line illegal 'entertainments'. We manged to dupe the proprietor one Devargo Bravasi, the self-styled 'Spider King' into providing us with damning information of an illicit affair and correspondence the Ambassador was having with a high-ranking House Thrune married woman. The 'Spider King', Devargo Bravasi had been using that information to blackmail the Ambassador. We obtained that blackmail and turned it over to Field Marshal Cressida Kroft to use as leverage against the ambassador... we left the details of such to her capable hands and as a benefit we found evidence of illegal drug trafficking and mass murder of rivals on-board Devargo's lair the Eel's End his victims feed to his pet Ettercap 'Chittersnap' in the holds of his wreaked ship. We were able to finally arrest him and shut down at least his operations. His trial is today... it will be the axeman for him I'm sure!"

"The last was the murder of a Shoanti warrior of some respected lineage - Gaekhen. The Shoanti Representative 'Way-Keeper of the Skoan-Quah, the Clan of the Skull' Thousand Bones - Gaeken's grandfather, told us the youth had run afoul of a rioting crowd and he being a Shoanti barbarian was killed and his body taken and sold to a known criminal Ryloth a rogue Necromancer who had a lair in the 'Dead Warrens'. 'Thousand Bones' warned that the Shoanti tribe were seeing the destabilized Korvosa as ripe for striking int heir centuries-long hatred of the Chelaxian invaders... and Gaeken's murder at this time and the desecration of his body was added fuel to the sentiments to reopen hostilities against Korvosa again if his body was not recovered. We searched the Dead Warrens and found his lair, though Ryloth himself was not their we slew his Derro apprentice-Necromancer Vreeg and recovered the various parts of Gaeken's body, turning them over to 'Thousand bones' before any organized assault of Korvosa could be assembled by the angered barbarians. This seems to have mollify the Shoanti... but we should be careful to show no weakness before them lest they ponder attacking us again! We are still seeking this villain Ryloth.. we'll get him... eventually!"

"I regret to inform you your highness we have had no progress on finding our king's assassin. Its a personal failing I take responsibility for and I beg your forgiveness for my failing in this matter... Our investigations continue though!"

Ashe walks and talks with Queen Ileosa and 'Dame' Sabina Merrin often switching his gaze between the two women to include both equally int he conversation. He walks them over to the stained glass windows slowing their stroll as he reports in detail of the Mercenary's activities. Despite his best efforts he found them both very attractive, especially Queen Ileosa herself! Ashe had seen Ileosa on many occasions but had never been this close to her in fact touching her... the warmth of her slender arm hooked at his elbow and her shapely attractive feminine figure, despite his best efforts, drawing his attention. Her dazzling crimson tresses of hair and her striking green eyes intense and full of deep secrets. He reminded himself constantly the purpose of his 'report' that he should not let himself be charmed or distracted by her lovely presence - Ileosa was indeed one of the greatest beauties in all Golarion! He often wondered with such a strength of personality and personal charisma why she saw the need to deal so harshly with people in court when a gentle word or two of genuine kindness would go soo much further? She had something her husband Eodred did not have... she had Charisma and Insight a force of personality... something that Eodred was sorely lacking. She could be so much more than he... if she chose to do so!

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
- Ashe is again trying to read their reactions. First The Queen's surprise and hesitation to walk with him... was it fear or was she certainly surprised or charmed at the notion? Also reactions to his first report especially the Queen's to his professed failure to find the assassin... which is not untrue. He never claimed to be pursuing Trinia... only the assassin of the king of which he is certain Trinia is not! He is trying to gain some insight into their feelings on the Mercenary's efforts... is there any duplicity or foreknowledge of the events in their expressions? All his efforts are to lower her guard so he may get a clear "feel" {Er... not a physical one! lol!} for her motivations.

Ashe receives Varrel's telepathic warning about the magic surrounding the Queen and it does indeed sober him to his purpose replying {...uhm. That is Disturbing indeed Varrel. Thank you, for the information I'll keep it close in mind! We really owe Majenko a debt of gratitude for his abilities... this would not be possible without his efforts!}

Majenko chimes in, {Your welcome friend heroes! Majenko is an adventurer too! I do all I can to help... but I think Queen is bad... don't like her smell... she smells... wicked, like fiend.}

Ashe ponders, {Now for some subterfuge... and manipulation...}

Ashe continues, "Now onto our discoveries on this plague situation. It started the night of the debacle at the execution... I was heading home that evening when I heard the Harbor Guard Trebuchet firing. I went to investigate and a 'Gunnery-Sergeant' Sinon Dale on duty at that time told me a ship was coming toward the docks but with its plague ship warning running light lit. The Harbor Guard signaled the vessel to heave too and not dock at the main docks but further down stream as directed...but the ship refused to respond. for safety sake the ship was sunk by Korvosan Trebuchet fire. The next day a Varisian Harrower of our acquaintance gave us a reading and it had some ominous readings - The Cyclone [the past], The Sickness [the present], and the Paladin {inverted}[the future]. To our understanding the Cyclone indicted evil plots in the past... obviously the assassination of our king Eodred, the Sickness a current danger of disease and illness or corruption... and the paladin {inverted}.. perhaps a warning that it be foolish to stand and fight against a superior foe in the future... but the irony was not lost on me personally. I can only hope it does not foretell of my falling, at least not before my service to the Crown is fulfilled... your highness! We sought some precautionary disease protection before meeting with Field Marshal Kroft to investigate the coincidental arrival and sinking of a plague ship with such a grim warning. The Marshal agreed with our concerns and we went to the shores to try to locate where the ship was to have sunk and to see if any refuse had washed up. We learned from the scavengers there that a young girlchild had discovered a strange chest that had washed up she opened it and left with it immediately. We could find no other clues as to what was in the chest so we followed the likely rout of the child inquiring of those in the morning if anyone had seen her. We learned that she had bought a few trinkets and some snacks but turned ill and went home. It is then I noticed that some of the people she had came in contact with were not looking well either. I sensed for the presence of evil, on a whim - actually, and found that coins in their possession radiated evil! The stall owners indicated the girl had paid for her goods with coins from a chest. We requested to see those coins and confirmed they both radiated magic and evil! A dreadful combination. We tracked the child's progress and learned she had taken suddenly Very ill and headed home. We tried to collect all those dangerous coins... only I handled them I being immune to any disease or magical ailment - but I'm certain some have escaped our retrieval. But we learned later it would not have mattered - I'll explain shortly."

"The child's home in 'Trail's End', is where we found her already in the care of a 'Cleric of Abadar' Ishani Dahatri who had been called to look after the child... he is actually here with us right now to consult with your physicians. I am an... amateur physician myself and having prepared - forewarned as we were this morning by the Harrow reading, I took it upon myself to look to the girl's health to try to determine the nature of her malady."

Ashe sighs ... his tone growing somber...

"I cast a miracle I had prepared of my goddess Iomedae's wisdom, a diagnose disease miracle. Iomedae revealed this startling truth about the disease... it is a disease that is is a refined form of 'Vorel's Phage', in itself an unnatural disease that first came into being deep under Foxglove Manor, on Varisia's coast... and it looks like someone has meddled with it further. The disease is characterized by headache, fatigue, coughing, and a rash and mask of blisters that covers the face. As it progresses, the cough becomes more obtrusive, the rash spreads to the neck, face, and limbs and develops into pox-like blisters, and the lymph glands swell into painful buboes. At its most advanced stage, the blisters grow to the size of grapes or larger, internal bleeding creates black patches on the skin, and blood is expectorated. Ultimately, a most unseemly, wheezing death occurs. If left untreated, the disease kills the average human in approximately 7 days. It is contracted by contact or injury."

"This is a deliberate attack your highness...! Someone is seeking to actively spread disease in Korvosa. I gave what disease treatment I could to the child.. I am not capable of the mercy of remove disease as yet... another failing of mine which shames me. You need not fear I or my companions this was two days ago we made this discovery and none of us have any symptoms.. I have been very careful, your highness!"

"But there is more... we learned today. After treating the girl we made immediate report to Field Marshal Kroft. We proposed to investigate the wreak of the vessel directly to learn what the nature of its cargo was and seek any clues as to who was responsible. But we needed to prepare underwater magics which none of us had available yesterday prepared. Today with the Field Marshal's approval a boot was assigned to take us to the area of the wreak so we could investigate. We found that the vessel was named "Direption", and after making peaceful contact with a Sea Hag named Yvicca... {perhaps a ranger or druid as she was accompanied by a Jigsaw Shark she called 'Skinshear'} who had taking up residence and claimed the wreak as her home - we made some startling discoveries!"

"The 'Direption' hold was full of empty chests like the chest the little girl found on the shore their coins gone. So likely a large number of those diseased coins have gotten into the city... the girl's single chest was not the only one. We did manage to convince Yvicca to give us her singular unopened chest she had found. We also found a corpse of one of the crewmen... the only crew body we found. Apparently he drowned. The rest of the crew we can only guess abandoned ship at some point... they may be within the city... but we are not certain. The corpse bore a holy symbol of Urgathoa - 'The Pallid Princess' of disease!"

"We took the corpse and the chest returning to the surface and immediately headed for the Cathedral of Pharasma. There we had the corpse questioned. The chest indeed contained the same evil magically enchanted coins with the same disease upon them as was afflicting the young girl the day before... goddess Iomedaes' disgnose disease miracle confirmed this. The corpse identified himself as Rois Vindmel and his devotion as a low-ranking member of the Church of Urgathoa. Apparently the Church of Urgathoa contracted an outside source to arrange the shipment of these chests of diseased coins to Korvosa... he was very cryptic and bitter feeling he was used, betrayed, and discarded. Rois mentioned.. that assassins might be involved.. he did not know much more. But he did know the name of his superior.. one 'Lady' Andasian - High Priestess of Urgathoa. He did not know where she was currently though."

"My queen, I am by no means a master of spies but my time as a Pathfinder has made me the suspicious sort. I do not believe in coincidences. Do you think it might be possible the assassination of our king and the disease are related? I think its possible some foreign power could be trying to destabilize Korvosa for their own nation's benefit. Foreign assassins, plague shipments, cults of disease and death... perhaps Magnimar, our great political rival for dominance of the Inner Sea's commerse is trying to make a more active assault of political sabotage - assassinate our king, spread plague to weaken our great city to bring about Korvosa's downfall?"

"I... mean no impertinence my queen, I know you know more than I of these matters but how well do you know this 'Dr' Reiner Davaulus? I only bring this up because .. as we waited in your parlor for word to be sent to you for our request of audience, he told me of his appointment as chief physician and I mentioned the possible involvement of the Urgathoan Church and the deliberate assault on our city by forces unknown. He and his robed compatriots got nervous and he said in response - and your Grey Maidens on watch there can confirm this, ''Ah. Sorry... it must be a bit disconcerting talking to a blank face. Deliberate, you say? And connected to Our... um, the Urgathoan faith? Is it practiced here? Forgive me, I am not local.''"

"I know the worship of Urgathoa is not prohibited here in Korvosa.. but again.. I do not believe in coincidences! Do you know? Is Dr. Davaulus a worshiper of Urgathoa? A strange faith for a healer would you not say? And he is a foreigner. Perhaps I'm jumping to conclusions and seeing plots where there are none.. but caution is not unwarranted with the safety of Korvosa at stake!"

Ashe looks deep and earnestly into the Queen's emerald eyes with his own frosty blues. Even knowing she might be involved he can't help but be charming... flirting even just a little - unconsciously... with his gaze from the lovely closeness, and warmth of Ileosa on his arm. He wants to find no duplicity in Ileosa and hopes she is not behind these vile wicked schemes...

Kno {Nobility}: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
- On Queen Ileosa
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
- On Sabina
Pro {Courtesan}: Take 10! 10 + 5 = 15
- Ashe is just being generally charming not really trying for any serious specific reponse - he already has a friendly reaction from Ileosa.. though he may be getting some hard stares from Sabina.
Perception: Take 10! 10 + 3 = 13
- Ashe is only casually watching for physical clues... he does not want to seem suspicious of Ileosa herself.
Diplomacy: Take 10! {Korvosan} 10 + 9 = 19
- Ashe is already being afforded friendly contact Queen Ileosa so he is mostly just using this to seem the loyal and diligent servant of the crown.. its part of his Act/Con.

- Yes. Ashe is playing a dangerous game of verbal cat and mouse with the Queen right now. He is baiting her looking for a reaction to what he says, what she says in response, how she says it and what she does not say. Ashe has left a number of 'traps' in his report. His technique is the first report is all truth to lower her wariness as it is mundane truths to which she likely feels no urgent importance ... that is to make her feel he has nothing really of any major importance to report. The second report is deliberately poking around the central focus of the truth with facts but a lot of circumstantial information that if the Queen is aware of them already his report should stab at her composure. He is leaving out specific information that would let her know the Mercenary's know more and he is diluting his report with suppositions. He is speaking not direct falsehoods... all truth... but suppositions that can cloud the issue of weather they actually know something are are the Mercenary's just guessing. The traps he has placed are - he did not state exactly what type of coins or their minting {waiting to see if the Queen reveals a detail he did not mention}, he has also not mentioned at all the involvement of the Red Mantis organization merely referring to foreign assassins {to see what her response to that will be if she reveals more than he mentioned}, and he cast question on Dr. Davaulus' trustworthiness in a sideways manner forcing her to defend him to see if she will slip and reveal something like Davaulus did. Basically Ashe is playing bait and switch, or a Jame's bond tactic of 'provoke and confront' where he pokes at the foes to get them to respond then is prepared to take advantage of their retaliation... but Ashe is couching it in polite seeming diligence in loyal service to his "trusted" monarch. To note... nothing Ashe has revealed is anything we have not already reported to city officials already... only sensitive incriminating evidence pointing directly to the queen or her direct servants has been... omitted from being reported.

Varrel unfortunately only gets the majority of Ashe's report second hand via Majenko.
He keeps his own thoughts private, He better hope she's innocent or at least playing a long game. If she IS guilty and shortsighted, we just may need to fight our way out of here. Varrel takes note of the obvious guards and tries to spy any hidden ones.

[OOC: Wasn't much choice... needed to needle her to see if she would react. She also knows we have told others what we know - The Bishop of Pharasma, the Field Marshal, and the Church of Abadar! With just my report it shows we are resourceful and capable - dangerous. Attempting to Kill us would not be the end of it and right now she does not have that many Grey Maidens yet to make that stick! Attacking us right now would majorly tip her hand... especially when she has better - more subtle tools to use.. like Red Mantis assassins! Plus, Ashe has not made any hints that she is under suspicion! A whole portion of the plan is missing {namely the Red Mantis connection} to jump the gun as it were and try to kill us now would be premature. I also don't think Sabina is in on any scheme the Queen might have hatched. That would be a complication Ileosa could ill afford right now... IF.. if the queen is actually guilty of some wrong doing! :)

I would love to play with you lot face-to-face!

Queen Ileosa listens to what Ashe has to say without interruption. Sabina looks like she's about to butt in a couple of times, but holds her tongue.

When Ashe has finished, the Queen inclines her head gravely.

"It seems, Sir Asherick, that you have been busy on the Throne's, on my, behalf... and we are grateful for your activities so far. For now, this plague is our greatest concern. I would ask that you aid Doctor Davaulus as you may, and seek to find any assassins that may be infesting our city."

Varrel: The Queen's initial unease, you think, was surprise at Ashe being somewhat forward, but she gradually relaxed as he walked and talked. She still seems wary, though, and certainly concentrated intently on what he was saying. Her poker face is good, too, no discernable reactions to anything he's said.

Sabina: well, it might have been normal bodyguard paranoia. Or something... more personal.

Looking around, there is a minstrel gallery to the left of the throne and you think a couple of those Grey Maidens are up there.

Ashe looked at Ileosa.. searching her lovely face for any reaction.. any expression... and found nothing. Absolutely nothing. And that told him EVERYTHING!

{She knows. She knows whats going on and why and SHE'S behind it! No reaction at all to what would normally illicit in any 'concerned' monarch even an evil one - such plots being hatched beneath their nose and she has nothing ... no reaction?!? I've seen Ileosa at court... she is not one to hold back her rage at being defied or plotted against! She didn't even try to feign shock or surprise.. or even concern! SHE KNOWS! DAMN HER but she Knows! Goddess WHY? Why destroy the city she has so coveted?
It's MADNESS!!}

Ashe tried not to show his deep personal disappointment in Ileosa... but he was also angry. His pride.. yes it was pride kept him from looking away as he looked her eye to eye his intense frosty gaze smouldering with something new...

He spoke his tone cold, "As you command your highness! It shall be done."

With a crisp professional bow and salute Ashe turned and strode for the door, his grey cloak whipping with the intensity of his strides, and garishly colored bladed & weighted Kepenia trailing in his wake...

Turned away from the queen his eyes burned with a growing storm of azure FURY!

Ashe exits the throne room his expression grim and troubled. Majenko takes flight to seek perch upon his shoulder... sensing his friend's saddened and angry mood, and lightly licks his cheek to comfort him. Ashe's expression does not change but he does raise a hand to affectionately scratch his little dragon friend between the wings eliciting a soft cooing of pleasure and relief.

Returning downstairs to the rest of the party in silence Ashe collects his weapons returning them to their weapons belts and sheaths... he has no words for anyone until he dons his gryphon-creasted, whiteplumed helm - visor down hiding all expression save perhaps the occasional intense smouldering of his azure gaze through a visored helm slit.

His voice is cold and metallic, "Let's go. We will escort you where you need to go Davaulus... but we have much work to do so let us not tarry here anymore."

Ashe follows in cold silence near the back of the party Majenko perched agitatedly upon his shoulder...

Varrel follows the group on the way out and simply mentally relays via Majenko, {As before, we have no solid proof, but all the circumstancial evidence continues to point to the queen or someone manipulating her. I did not hear her words to Ashe, but his mental outrage indicates even he is firm that she is guilty or heavily involved. We have no proof. We need to watch this doctor for now and talk later...}

He falls in step at the rear this time while Ashe leads, he had not seen Ashe this angry since they found the remains of those the spider king had fed to the ettercap. He was surprised at his own calmness, likely because he had expected as much coming here anyway. Someone was going to pay for the harm upon this city, but...the queens Aura gave him pause. Despite not being a true wizard, Varrel was no novice. Identifying a magical auras school was a simple task for a practitioner of his power. He knew there was magic about her but the fact he could not divine it's school either meant it was a type he had not seen before (not likely considering his former masters) or something high enough in power that the spell was beyound his spellcraft. That was concerning him.

Depends on to whom you speak!) Chelaxian woman named Vendra Loaggri, who owns Lavender, one of the better-known and noted perfume boutiques in Korvosa, which stands amid a row of tightly packed shops just off of Summoning Street. The perfumery has always had a reputation for avant garde creations and brazen promotions — infamous memories of the 'Free Imp with Every Purchase' stunt still linger among residents of the Heights... Ashe's own dear Mama almost fell for that one!

Davaulus mutters something about imposters and charlatans, and suggests that your party - given your quasi-official status - investigate.

"If she is a fraud, shut her down and apply whatever penalties you see fit," he directs. "And if there is any grain of truth, bring me a sample for analysis!"

Ashe lifts his visor a scowl on his visage surveying the scene of the rushing crowds.

"This is a non-starter. If we try to 'investigate' the validity of her claims with all these crowds in the way... we may be seen in the light of trying to keep them from a remedy ostensibly 'good' for them and could cause a riot. You are quite correct Una... they are desperate. Even if we did somehow succeed in revealing Vendra's duplicity... likely the crowd would tear her apart... and potentially start a rage riot! No. We should come back this evening when the shop is closed and the crowds less ... then do some clandestine investigations without causing a ruckus if possible. It would be better for everyone, if she is a fraud - as I'm inclined to believe, that we handle this quietly."

Switching to mental communication, {Majenko, could you please scout the alleys and store fronts behind and around the shop to see if there is a back entrance to "Lavender"?}

Ashe casts a suspicious stare at Dr. Davaulus, thinking {You really don't want us near you do you... yeah not falling for it! We'll leave once we know where to find your lair you murdering scumbag...!}

"By that time, all of the 'cures' might be sold, Ashe. And we would have no proof, either way. But you do have a point. This situation is strategically unsound for any type of maneuvering."

Ashe nods, "True Una... but I'm certain of one thing.. as with many of these 'snake-oil' salesmen... whatever this 'cure' is its not meant to hurt those buying it... for that would be counter-productive and garner her a mob of angry Ex-customers returning to get their coin back! Likely it will make them feel good for a day or so.. but not have any long-term benefit. I doubt that it will harm them in the day's time even if it is ... ultimately unhealthy for them to take in a long term. After all she wants them to come back and buy more, of course. Hopefully we can deal with this tonight before any true long term harm is inflicted."

Ashe ponders the activity of the crowd and Vendra...

"Its even possible she has an actual means to cure disease... though limited in scope maybe to give weight to the validity of her product. Or even a 'shill' in the crowd to garner crowd favor ... its a common Con method to gain the favor of her 'marks'. It's even easier to pull off if people are afraid or desperate!"

Icabhod waits until they are out of earshot of the 'doctor' before speaking up. We could go buy a few and give him a sample while taking another to an alchemist who really knows what they are doing. Then we can find out if the cure is real or not.

Ashe nods in approval, "That, is an excellent idea Icabhod! I have some skill as an alchemist and healer... but I'm sure if I can't determine the 'cures' validity... Master Phaeton Skoda of the 'Hedge Wizardry' Alchemy shop can."

Ashe guides Redhoof over to Icabhod and leans his over his saddlehorn reaching into his belt pouch to retrieve coins... handing out gold coins 100 in total to Icabhod.

"Would you please be so kind as to purchase us some samples Icabhod? If you can get a receipt."

Icabhod takes the money. Let's go Shakhan. He then heads off to the shop.

Shakhan barely nods, but his big shoulders crack a little has his muscles come to life. "hrm-"

Varrel thinks across the mindlink, {I have one invisibility scroll left, Una. If you wish me to do any internal investigation now. Unfortunately I did not prepare it myself of Vanish for that matter. My spells today were all for fighting. I will remain more flexible in future}

The elf looks on as the party giant and thier sorcerer make thier way towards the vendor. He follows but stays back 20ft, bringing the vendor into view and tries to look scary enough for the crowd to stay back.
{I can slumber the vendor if he won't sell, you could take a sample if he gives you trouble and walk away, the crowd would no doubt shake the fainted awake though or just hop the counter and start stealing. I would rather not but the offer is there if you wish, Una or Shakhan.}

Intimidate1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

The elf has an idea {For that matter I can slumber the good 'Doctor'if we can get him away from the guards and take him somewhere for an interrogation, if the act would be prudent}

Liberty's Edge

Majenko can report that there are 2 structures behind the perfume shop. One looks like living quarters, the other is boarded up.

Shakhan and Icabhod push their way through the crowds. As they get closer, they find that a queue of eager Korvosans stands in a line that stretches nearly four blocks from the perfumery's distinctive amethyst-shaded windows. Many of these people look healthy, but several bear the obvious hacking, blistered symptoms of blood veil. The line threads through the street and into the store.

Do you want to wait in line or queue-jump?
