@Ashe: Never actually DMed a dive before, but melding real world experience with the rules, I see the Swim check being about your capability to maintain control in the water, and the addition of fins just enabling you to move faster through the water. So if you succeed in the Swim check you will move in the direction that you intend at your normal swimming speed +10ft, else you will either go in a random direction or merely flounder around if you flub it really badly!
The rest sounds good. Consider the real world, people tend to use spear-guns and the like underwater, and most divers carry knives.
Shall we proceed to the docks, or do you want to see if you can have a word with Zellara first?
Una Therlmagne |
Seeing that everyone is anxious to go, Una nods and returns the deck of cards to its hiding place.
"Alright then. To the wreck! I'll survey first, like I said. Is Majenko around. I won't be able to breathe air for a few hours once I take this potion. I'll have to talk to you all through him."
Una takes the small box with four potion vials and most of her equipment with her. Anything that could be obviously damaged by water is left behind.
Megan Robertson |
You head across town from Zellara's home towards the docks, which are located along the Narrows of St Alba (Map, if you're interested). This is quite close to Eel's End, which some of you may remember!
There, a boat is waiting for you. It's a fishing boat, and glitters as the early morning sun catches the fish scales that cover its deck. The master, a tall, thin, almost cadaverous fellow with slightly pointed ears poking out from a wool watch cap, welcomes you aboard.
"'Morning. I'm Callatra. Guard's hired me to take you to t'middle of the sound, where that ship foundered t'other night. Least the pay's about the same as a day's catch, without the effort. C'mon, get yourselves aboard."
He has a chart on which the approximate position of the wreck is marked, and has his cross-staff ready to take bearings.
Varrel |
I will go. Una, I have a spell so I will not be seen. Unfortunately I cannot cast it on another but you will have backup and I can get us to the surface quickly if something happens
Una Therlmagne |
"I'm sure I'll be safe enough just to survey. But you may do as you wish, all things considered. I do not want you to waste limited resources for underwater survival if they are truly limited." Una sits on the edge of the ship's railing and pulls the swimming flippers on over her feet.
Una Therlmagne |
"In utmost sincerity, I believe it is best to survey first, rapidly. To impart the necessary information from the scouting mission, and then to proceed as a group once we are aware of what we are dealing with." Una pauses as she looks at the others, especially at Majenko. "But If Majenko stays near the water surface, he can probably aid us with his mental speech. So you may do as you wish. Ultimately, that is the way it must be in any respect. Personal tides and eddies in the great river of life. If everyone jumps in at once, does it create a more noticeable splash? Perhaps a philosophy question left for later."
Una backs off the ship and slips into the cold (Perhaps tepid?) water with hardly a noise at all.
Varrel |
Though she was more than capable, Varrel follows anyway. He asks Gronk to cast his spell of water breathing, dons his flippers with Una, casts his spell and immediately his from blends a miriad of colors from any angle.
He could be seen, but the camouflage would allow him to hide in plain sight if he wasn't already being observed.
Lasts 50min.
Gronk's spell cast, he slips into the water, swims under the boat and disappears.
Majenko relays to Una, Elf friend says, "I will swim about 15ft to the side of you. If you are attacked, I will be there for you", I think elf friend likes you, he does!
Stealth1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Gronk de'Morcaine |
Sorry Varrel, we posted at the same time yesterday and I missed you asking me to use one of the scrolls.
Gronk readies the first scroll and directs the energies at Varrel, Kayla, and Icabhod.
Тепер ви можете дихання води
The 3 of you can now breath water for the next 1 hour and 40 minutes. First scroll taken off of equipment.

[OOC: Sorry guys have not been noticing this thread updating which is why I have not made any posts. Sorry.]
Ashe follows on 'Redhoof' Securing him at the docks with the Harbormaster.
Ashe greets the ship captain affably, "Well met Captain Callatra, our thanks for the use of your vessel."
Ashe takes stock of the fishing boat - looking over the tack and lines, state of the sail canvas, and rudder locks with an experienced eye to appraise the well maintenance of the vessel to determine how well it has been up-kept.
Profession: Sailor 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Ashe nods getting a good assessment of the boats suitability and asks the captain, "...Its bad luck to take passage on a ship whose name you do not know. What is your boat's name Captain Callatra?"
Satisfied Ashe takes a position at the prow and watches the flow of the river and the sky trying to determine if there will be any turbulent winds, any especially complicated undertows with the winter run-off or any obviously foraging Jigsaw sharks on the prowl today.
Mostly he broods in silence.. his mind returning to the memory of a pair of enchanting lovely green eyes...
Once the boat is in position he helps Captain Callatra with mooring the ship - folding sails and securing the yard arm and lines as needed.
Then Ashe sits and puts on his swim-fins making ready for the decent.
He is not comfortable with splitting the party, and comments, "...It's your decision of course Una. But from my past experience with such things... many scouts forget the PRIMARY purpose of their scouting and don't just scout - many times getting themselves into trouble they can't get out of. No accusation of you.. just an admonishment.. please be careful and take no unnecessary risks. I'll have Majenko ready to transmit... but keep in mind his range is only 60'ft. If the sound is as deep as we think 200'ft or more.. you'll be waay out of range."
Having said his piece Ashe holds position deferring to Una's direction.
Ashe frowns slightly at Varrel's decision to follow Una and is about to comment but reluctantly remains silent obviously not pleased as the elf enters the water.
At Gronk's casting one of his Water Breathing spells Ashe will ask that he and Majenko be included in the effect as well.
Gronk de'Morcaine |
Since it will include Majenko. The next casting will only last 1 hour and 15 minutes. So I was planning to wait as long as possible before casting it. If you guys really want it now though, let me know.
Self have scroll for rest of us. Be thinking wait use till ready get wet.
I'm not sure if you only meant a perception check for those of us in the water or not. So I will roll one incase you do have a use for it for those of us still in the boat.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Una Therlmagne |
Una breaks out a sunrod. She swims a few feet down and imbibes the potion of aboleth's lung and an elixir of swimming.
Perception
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Through Majenko, I have not gone down much yet. We'll need to stay close to the surface so Majenko can relay. I will go down and see what I can see. If I'm attacked, I'll return to the surface and let you all know what dangers we face. If not, I'll try to see what I can about the ship. In either case, if I'm not back in five minutes, I may require rescuing.
Varrel |
Majenko, come down to the limit of your telepathy. 50ft.I will follow Una to the edge 50ft past you. That gets us 100 feet down. Una, if you wish me to remain back I shall, but I do not like that idea
If Majenko descends as asked, Varrel will follow 15 ft to the side of Una, keeping his stealth active and senses alert.
Stealth1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11
Majenko |
Without a second thought of caution the amethyst-colored small dragon hissess in excitement and leaps from Ashe's shoulder into the water Thrashing his tail to propel himself down as fast as he can... much to Ashe's shocked disapproval and obvious concern.
Majenko's Swim: {Untrained} 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (17) - 2 = 15
Full Round Action: Movex2 - 15'ft progress {water speed is half normal, and 'winged flight' is useless in water}
Majenko's excited telepathic messages come to Varrel and Una strong and clearly, {I help like real adventurer... I be yes?!! I will keep fighting spellcaster Elf and leader sniper woman in contact!}
Asherick Whiteplume |
Ashe immediately stands and moves to the railing watching the water intently trying to keep sight of Majenko and the surrounding waters as if suddenly VERY fearful for his dragon companion... torn between obeying and protecting his little friend from the MANY predators that swim in the Jeggare River...
Mentally he speaks to the little dragon.. or at least attempts to as very rapidly he is loosing sight of the dragon beneath the waves.
Megan Robertson |
The ship is called the Starfish and apart from having a liberal coating of fish-scales everywhere seems in good order. Callatra is impressed with Ashe's boat-handling skills.
Una glides down, seeing nothing amidst swirling mud apart from an incurious blue shark which swims past about its own business, ignoring her. There's a splashing above as a certain pseudodragon enters the water, tail going round in circles which gives him a curious corkscrew motion. Varrel hovers above and behind Una.
The rest peer over the side.
One round of swimming (and air breathing) expended... another set of Perception checks from those in the water please.
Una Therlmagne |
To Majenko, Dear little pseudodragon, are you sure you should be down here with us. You are very brave, but I am worried this is not the ideal environment for you. Also to everyone, there are blue sharks, but they do not seem too dangerous right now. It might be another story if we are injured.
Una decides to swim straight down in a dive, keeping a wary eye on the darkness around her. 25 ft.
Perception
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
Majenko |
Majenko slows a little pondering Una's mental words, she can 'almost' hear his characteristic chirp of consternation in his thoughts, {Ashe said something about big fish with teeth but Majenko have teeth too and poison stinger! Never been underwater before though can't breath... and wings not work well... but can breath now! Ashe say I should follow your lead and stay on boat... wait for your return... like you said. He think he knows everything! Majenko fierce! Majenko Dragon! You, U-unaa want Majenko to stay and help?}
Majenko |
Majenko trills joyfully across his telepathic speech, {Yes! I can help... pretty, smart, U-una! I stay!}
However, its seems Ashe's unheard mental admonishments do indeed make the excitable little dragon begin to proceed more carefully. Cautiously he swims further down another 5'ft total moving stealthily his frantic corkscrew motion gently turning into a very fluid undulation of tail wings and neck almost eel-like. Amazingly, his natural garish amethyst-colored scales shift hue slightly as his natural ability to slightly shift the hue of his scales {part of Pseudo-dragon courting and natural defensive stealth abilities} actually blend into the constant aqua-hue of the waters breaking up his distinct shape in the watery gloom making him hard to keep track of visually...
Stealth: {Move less than Half rate under stealth '-5'} 1d20 + 19 - 5 ⇒ (14) + 19 - 5 = 28
Majenko pans his head back and forth looking for these hostile big 'fish' Ashe keeps warning him about mentally... and incessantly... while trying to move deeper to extend his telepathic speech range for Una, Varrel and the party still onboard the boat.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Megan Robertson |
Both Varrel and Majenko think they catch a glimpse of something in the depths, but it's still a bit too murky to be sure that it's the vessel that you are seeking.
Another round gone... some more Perception checks from our aquanauts, please!
On the surface, gulls wheel overhead. Shakhan spots a fin cutting through the water, but it's travelling away from where the Starfish is hove to.
Callatra comes out with a snack: fried squid and moonradish salad.
Varrel |
Varrel silently follows keeping stealthed.
Perception1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
Stealth1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Majenko |
Majenko maintains his own slow but stealthy decent...
Swim down another 5'ft... maintaining his stealth...
Swim: {Untrained} 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (2) - 2 = 0
He tries flapping his wings for more speed and maneuverability.. but instead they provide drag and bring hims to a stop... briefly floundering in the water as unlike air it won't get out of the way of his wings...
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
The floundering spoils his view of the river bed as he struggles to get his equilibrium again.
Megan Robertson |
"Spicy tomato sauce? Of course," Callatra beams, and chops up some tomatoes at once, mixing in a few herbs and spices. It's quite fiery, treat with caution :)
As Una swims deeper, she's certain that what she sees lurking in the depths is a large boat...
... then Majenko comes tumbling past, stirring up a lot of silt and obscuring everything!
However, from what she'd seen before floundering pseudodragons stirred up the river, there is a ship wreck, in good repair (i.e. recent) at a depth of about 100ft.
Asherick Whiteplume |
Ashe watches the surface of the river looking for jigsaw sharks or other predators completely obvious to the mishap taking place below in the depths of the river.
Megan Robertson |
To move things along a bit, Una swims around a bit and returns to the surface, followed by Varrel and Majenko. Once she's got her breath back, she can describe/sketch out the information shown here
Although Una is still quite fresh, Varrel appears extremely exhausted by his efforts and declares that he can swim no more today although he might be able to cast the odd spell if needed.
The sharks, so far, do not appear interested in what's going on here but plenty of seagulls have been hanging around. Callatra takes a broom and tries to drive them away, complaining that they leave their droppings all over his deck!
"Have ye found what you wanted?" he asks, "Or do you need to dive again?"
Una Therlmagne |
"We'll be diving again, yes. I just wanted to make sure it was relatively safe and we had a good layout of the land (so to speak) before everyone went down there."
She looks over the rough sketch she and Asherick had come up with based on her perception.
Una Therlmagne |
"I'll take point, as the rest of you search. It should be safe enough. If you find anything, return to the rock here in the middle. Try not to touch any coins you find directly. Or even a chest if you can help it. We don't know what exactly is enchanted to do what."
Una points out the obvious entrances and emergency exits from the boat that she was able to see, including windows, hatches, doors, and more.
