Ashe scrambles down, a couple of hairy moments and he gets where he wants to be. Hytogg, Una and Varrel peer down, while Chatterbeak flits around.

Murky water floods the filthy bilge, its surface dark and calm.

Chatterbeak's keen sense of smell can detect decay, rotting wood, mud... it doesn't seem like this area has been in use for quite some time.


"Well?" He holds out the potion of mage armor to Varrel. "Try not to break in the first encounter." He keeps his eyes on the door that Ashe pointed out, axe to the ready.

Despite the challenge in Shaktan's voice, Varrel has spent a lifetime under controlling, disrespectful and sometimes outright vicious masters. I would take a lot more than that to raise his ire, besides, he was unproven amongst this group. Something he would very quickly rectify.

Ashe looking around finds what he expected... the bilge of the ship is merely used as a middin... probably the Privies empty into the bilge here but it was best someone confirm it. And with the proclivity that Devargo had shown for 'spiders...' it was possible that perhaps a large variety one could have had a lair down there. It seemed too risky to Ashe to send a valuable familiar down into an area that might have spider webs or even a web casting spider hiding there to snare it from the air. Then a rescue would have been necessary and unlikely to succeed considering how 'fragile' most familiars were. Ultimately someone had to be... "gutsy" enough to venture down and make sure there were no further threats...

These thoughts all flashed through Ashe's mind as he scanned the room... relieved that it was just an empty bilge.

"Indeed it is thankfully empty..." Ashe called up, as he ascended the rope one last time.

Back up on the lower deck Ashe gestures to Una and Shakhan toward the next door as he puts out the two torches and stows them back in his belt pouch. He makes no comment to 'Chatterboxes' teasing... willing to accept criticism at the exchange of none if his comrades sustaining injury...

"Ok. The next door Una, Shakhan... but be wary... we have not run across Devargo's personal quarters! He must have some, so... this last door may be it! If so... reason stands that it may be trapped against unwanted visitors. Use extreme caution in opening and unlocking that door!

Ashe readies his shield on his arm and draws his Longsword again at the ready once more...

A single low desk sits against the wall of this room, but there aren't any chairs. Several sacks are on the desk, rather lumpy ones.

A large wooden door marked with a painting of a spider is on the southern wall. A plain door is to the north.

Ashe moves forward, politely excusing himself as he steps past Una and Shakhan cautiously entering the room.

He points to the North Door {the one without the spider upon it} and Nods to Shakhan to guard it. Ashe favors Una with a softly spoken, 'Excellent work!' as he cautiously walks past into the room next to the table with the lumpy sacks on it.

Shield up Ashe gently prods the lumps in the sack with the tip of his longsword to provoke some movement if they are creatures within...

If there is no responsive motion Ashe uses the tip of his sword to pierce/catch on the end of the bag and dump their contents slowly...

Varrel motions Ashe to hold a moment, he moves in and takes up positon at the other door (bottom left corner of the room) and the shortsword in his right hand cackles quietly as he readies an action to Spellstrike (Shocking Grasp) anything that comes through the door.

He then silently nods to Ashe to continue.

Chatterbeak takes a perch directly above the door so that he may share the space of anything that enters and readies an action to help distract anything that enters (aid another) should a foe come through.

Una holds up a hand in the typical indication to halt, then lowers all the fingers but the index one. She checks the desk for any traps, and if it is not trapped she'll open it and look inside. (Usually desks have a drawer at least.)

Perception (Take 10?) to look for traps.

Varrel's eyes flash with recognition at the sight of his gear.

Even toned he says That's my gear. It seems the Spiderking saw to keep it or had not had time to sell it. You'll note the Insignia of House Thrune on the hilt of my Claw, the Warhammer and on the hem of the Chainshirt, the Pearl of Power has a Shocking Grasp prepared within.

As if to back up his claim, Varrel pulls aside his shirt to reveal the same symbol burned over his heart.

DC15 Knowledge Check- Nobility or Local:

Success means you recognise the Brand of House Thrune. While not based in Korvosa, the Name and Mark are common enough that anyone with knowledge of Korvosan/Chelish Nobility knows the Mark.
You also recognise the reference 'Claw' to be a Chelish slang word for Scimitar

Unless anyone attempts to stop him, Varrel will move to retrive and Don his gear. These items are the only possesions he 'owns' or rather, the only things his master has given him. Whether or not the others put together his brand marks him a slave, and thus not leagally entitled to own anything, remains to be seen.

If the others to not prevent him from getting his gear back. Varrel's +1 Chainshirt takes his AC to 17. He sheathes his Warhammer handle down on his right hip. His scimitar sheathe is placed cross-draw on his left hip. He pockets the Pearl of Power, the Shortbow and Arrow quiver are stowed on his back. Spell component pouch goes on his belt over front left hipbone. Finally he puts his spellbook and the potion of Cure light wounds in a small phanny pack on the back of his belt.

Looking at Ashe, he holds out the Potion of Shield of Faith and the Borrowed Shortsword, hilt first.
I am sorry, but the my money pouch was not among my gear. Please accept a potion of equal value to the Mage Armor until I can make proper payment.

At Varrel's recognition of the items emptied upon the table... that is good enough for Ashe. He steps away from the table and moves to take Varrel's place at the door to the south - the one with the spider emblazoned upon it.

Ashe takes up position to guard the door.

Ashe's brow furrows at the displayed slave brand of House Thrune his eyes softening with sympathy.

Ashe is startled at the offer of a potion in payment... he'd completely dismissed the matter.

Ashe has to choke down the almost automatic refusal of payment... but smiles and nods accepting the payment, "Payment is not required, for in truth - to me, money is the least valuable of things I do possess... but I'll not spurn your gift of fairness in the spirit in which it was freely given. Thank you."

Ashe detects evil in the direction of the Northern Door, just to confirm his suspicions - the 60'ft cone breaching the less than three foot thick ships walls scanning the length of the vessel northwise... to reveal no other sources of evil upon the ship that way.

Ashe speaks to his comrades, "We have found Varrel's possessions... behind a locked door and no other crew on board - thus far. I also do not detect any other sources of evil beyond that Northern door... I think we have spent enough time in search of the ship... I'm reasonably sure that there is no one else upon the ship other than the evil beyond this southern door. Lets deal with it now while the durations of our limited magics are still in effect. Gird yourselves ready... we strike 'Chitters' now!"

He gestures for Shakhan to join him as he prepares to open the 'spider' door.

After anyone else readies themselves, Varrel will cast SHIELD upon himself before Ashe opens the door. Taking his AC to 21 and will use a Swift Action to use his arcane pool to enchant his weapon to +1.
*While his weapon is not magical, Arcane pool normally stacks with a weapons enchancement, so I'll assume it also works on a masterwork weapon.*
Varrels to hit with the Scimitar is now +7 for a 2handed spellstrike or +5 for spell combat

Though it does not sit well with him, Varrel will stand 3rd in order of march, deferring to the parties 2 main fighters. Then speaking to Ashe in ElvenI am ready, Just One.

Varrel will await Ashe to enter the room.
Chatterbeak, sensing his masters, tensing for combat, flaps to perch on his shoulder. Taking care to stay to the rear so to not block his vision. Ashe feels the Empathic Link as Chatterbeak's senses highten his own.

Casts detect magic, and scans the desk, the sacks, (just retroing a bit), and the rest of the room.

Una drinks her potion of gravity bow and follows Ashe towards the door marked with a spider.

She makes certain that the tiny pseudodragon is safely behind her.

"Not sure what's behind this door, but it might be able to eat you in a single bite.... It might be able to eat us in a single bite."

She shudders.

Ashe, detect evil reveals nothing evil behind the north door. (If you turn towards the south one before the spell expires, all the bells go off...).

Hytogg, there is no enchantment associated with the desk although of course some of Varrel's gear is magical.

Una, you find that the desk drawer is unlocked. All it contains is a scrap of paper with a grocery list scrawled on it, some of the items crossed out.

And now, to the door with the spider painted on it....

The door is unlocked. It opens outwards, towards you. Within, the dark chamber beyond is riddled with dizzying tunnels and twisting corridors formed by thick cobwebs. The floor is a sticky, lumpy mass of webbing and dozens, if not hundreds, of bones — many of which seem to be from humanoid bodies. Some of the webs seem to shimmer and dance, almost as if reflecting rainbows in their silken forms. There is a continual sense of movement, not seen but felt, a skittering on the edge of your perceptions.

You say 'dark' room. How dark? Are the Human Chars going to have trouble seeing? If light is an issue or foes are hiding,
Varrel and Chatterbeak will make a Perception check:

If they see nothing (due to darkness) Varrel will cast light on his armor to banish the darkness. He'll also step past Shaktan and Ashe (move action) into the room, on the right of the door, so the others can see by his light and to draw enemies to him near a choke point where his allies can enter with an attck. (Varrel would total defense but cannot, he used his standard to cast) That would end his turn.

IF he does spot Chitters (then bugger the light!) within Move range he'll shout a warning to his allies, close and Shocking Grasp 2 handed Spellstrike. Varrel is after Spiderking's executioner, he is NOT interested in Surrender.

Ashe thinks to Majenko, {Majenko could you relay this mentally to Shakhan, Una and Varrel?}, "I am the one most heavily armored... I'll draw the creatures attention be ready to take advantage of them revealing themselves when I bait them. Be careful of the rainbow hued webs... there is something sinister about them!"

Ashe moves forward to draw attention to himself from any of the creatures inside. With all the cover from the webbing... there is little doubt that he can be attacked from any angle he cannot see beyond the webs. So total defense is useless if he cannot ready against a specific quarter of attack.

Ashe boldly walks in doing a full move [30'ft if Expeditious retreat still running. 20'ft otherwise] and detects evil trying to pinpoint the location of the source of evil...

[The Trap door above is likely still open so some diffused light comes in through the ceiling.]

Speaking, "Chitter's... your master is no more, come forth and face justice for preying upon the peoples of KORVOSA... or we'll burn this ship down to the waterline with you in it!"

It is dark as in gloomy, with the only light being that filtering down from the hatch above.

Peering through the murk, Chatterbeak spots something large and points it out excitedly. Staring in the direction indicated, Una realises that it is indeed an ettercap - a grossly-overweight one!

Everyone's attention is distracted however by a large ogre spider that drops from the ceiling just inside the doorway, nose-to-nose with whoever is in the lead (is that you, Ashe?).

Ogre spider's initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20

Initiative from anyone who hasn't, please, and first round actions & rolls. Startling the spider's sudden appearance might have been but you were expecting trouble and he doesn't get surprise!

Ashe steps forwards without missing a beat, longsword swinging... connecting with the spider and severing a leg with a gout of vile ichor. Varrel performs quite an exotic manoeuvre with his 'Claw' - reaching awkwardly around both Ashe and the doorframe... and connects! The spider shudders convulsively, drawing its remaining legs back towards its fat, hairy body, topping over and lying there, legs clenching inwards, quite dead!

Hytogg relaxes, on the verge of spellcasting, saving the energy for another time. Una peers over the sights of her crossbow into the gloom, sensing rather than seeing movement in the depths (towards the centre of the chamber). Shakhan remains poised in defensive posture...

Varrel sees Ashe, wounded, yet still throwing himself in harms way, despite there being multiple able fighters to take his place at the front. {"Typical Paladin"}, he thinks, {"so eager to throw thier lives away even when not called for, it's no wonder most die young."}

Yet despite the similarities between this Paladin and Keegan, who'd set him on this path, this very young man possessed an optimism Varrel had never seen before. Whether that was the boys blessing or curse, remained to be seen.

He's lumbering to his feet when Varrel steps forwards and unleashes all his pent-up rage in a blast of magical energy, as the varigated lights of his colour spray jet from his fingers and impact the ettercap. He staggers back, making a strange shrill sound.

Una's first bolt barely misses, but she adjusts and two bolts thud into the bloated creature, just as more mystical energy, this from Hytogg, crackle its way into him too.

Chittersnap falls heavily backwards, landing with a crash that seems to shake the entire vessel.

Silence falls once more.

You can hear scuttlings and scurryings, sounds like there may be small spiders or other creepie-crawlies, but no other large ones come into view.
