OK, Whiteplume, the dagger is evil!

Otherwise, you find documents about meat supplies, several bottles of brandy, a nice longbow and an equally well-crafted spear and not much else.

Did Hytogg's Detect Magic show up anything?

Human Crossbow Weapon Master 4 / Sniper Rogue 2 / Hunter 2

Huh.. just lucky guesses, then. I think it would have been more natural to say, I scan the room with detect evil rather than I detect evil on the dagger. And earlier, when you suggested we get silver weapons, I felt like that was metagaming too. If it's not, we (er I) apologize for calling it out.

Una nods tersely at the paladin, then hands the deck to Hytogg and moves to look in the other room. When she sees the desk, she checks it for hidden drawers or compartments as well.

Hey no offense taken!

Megan said that when I scanned outside the room that there were no other sources that I did not detect before. When I entered the room I saw the silver dagger - I was planning on suggesting someone make use of it as a precaution. The Korvosa book tells in the player info section that the Academae {the major wizard's training school} demands its students summon imps as part of their graduation prerequisites, and that FLOCKS of the fiendish creatures stalk the roofs and streets of Korvosa... often fought by the flocks of Pseudo-dragons that hunt them and also roost in the city. I have no idea if that is an issue in the module though. It just seemed a wise precaution that a native of the city would suggest to obvious foreigners to Korvosa - devils need silver to hurt. There is also a hint that lycanthropes may haunt some places in town.

I almost did not choose to detect evil on the dagger at all thinking it a pointless matter... I figured it might be magical, it was described as ornate and that could mean it was masterworked and potentially magical... but evil... that really shocked to me! I've not run into many cursed items before in pathfinder... but thats an assumption it could just have an evil enchantment - like unholy or somesuch. But I began questioning weather Verik was evil at all when he did not react the way I expected... and Megan posted that I detected the same locations of evil as before... but verick was no longer upstairs. I was not sure if that was an oversight or intentional.

I almost detected evil on Verik twice when he surrendered {Asherick looks the man in the eye and ponders his words...; and Asherick looks at 'Corporal' Vancaskerkin and ponders him closely...} as he did not react the way I had expected... I figured if he were the gang leader of murderers he'd have to be fought to be subdued; but decided I'd be wasting time with info Megan had already provided. The evidence was only to force his hand instead risk him trying to bluff his way out {ie 'Darn they know we've killed someone might as well fight my way out...'} sort of, Ashe does not have a good sense motive bonus...yet. At least that was my logic. I hoped he'd surrender but I figured being their leader he would know all about any misdeeds of his men... probably under his orders and Verik would have to be fought.

Fighting him on the stairs would have been a pain only one attacker at a time. Ashe knows he has the best armor so it should be him. Ashe didn't want Shakhan to give up watching the other prisoners him being our other strong fighter. Risdin seems more of a ranged combatant... but I could be wrong about that. Just Ashe's misfortune that no one else has a reach weapon... or seems particularly interested in 'thinking outside the box of their familiarity'. He doesn't hold that against them... after all HE IS the outsider to the group! I'll admit it was a risky thing stepping up to fight the leader alone - as likely he would be tougher than the others... but Ashe hoped Hytogg would heal him as needed to win if/when it turned into a fight. Plus with your crossbow it might have been even easier.

Didn't turn out that way though! lol! So this was my train 'wreak' of thought' lol!

Human Crossbow Weapon Master 4 / Sniper Rogue 2 / Hunter 2

lol. No offense was intended. But no need to overthink this game, either. How will you explain away that aneurism (sp?)? Just as a roleplaying precaution; since you are the outsider of the group... lol. Una might be more suspicious of you than she would otherwise be. So... no sudden movements!

Okay, enough over the table talk. Back to the game!

Fascinating to see what is going on in everybody's minds! Gives me a lot to live up to, running the game for you. But if you enjoy this 'over the table talk' would you like an OOC thread to indulge in it, so as not to clutter up the game thread?

Right. Hytogg, if you cast a detect magic on the dagger, it shows as somewhat magical but you cannot tell the nature of the enchantment.

Whiteplume, you said you want to detect evil on Verik Vancaskerkin, yes? He registers as not evil.

Those who wish to search the slaughterhouse (B4 on the map) find that it operated thus: animals are killed in the northwest corner of the room after being led in from the holding pens, then hung from hooks and wheeled over the grate to be bled, skinned, and butchered. The blood and the majority of the entrails are allowed to slop through the grate into the pit below. Once the animal is prepared, it is allowed to soak in the boiling water and then the cool water to clean the carcass and slow decay, and is then wheeled over to the blocks to be butchered.

Although pretty icky, it's apparent that the grating in the southwest corner through which animals are bled out can be lifted... and more tellingly, your captives show unease when you investigate that part of the room.

Human Crossbow Weapon Master 4 / Sniper Rogue 2 / Hunter 2

Finding nothing of interest in the office, Una heads back downstairs to check on Shakhan and Risdin.

"Have the prisoners revealed anything further yet?"

Asherick makes note of Verik's lack of evil and his heart is relieved.

Turning his gaze specifically upon the other prisoners Asherick grimaces at their reaction to the investigation - especially near the slaughter grate. He pulls his Glaive-Guisarme ready to use its superior reach to open the grate with its hooked end and ...{eeh!} 'sort through' the remains without hopefully having to 'wallow' in the grizzly detritus.

He pauses looking over at the prisoners and says,"...do any of you wish to admit something? Or make some change in your story... once I open this and search it... events may move beyond my control to stop? It will not be up to me to decide... but the magistrates! Who was the man whose hand we found, how did he die, and why was his hand in your slaughter house?"

Una opened her mouth to silence the overzealous paladin, but shut it swiftly, arching her eyebrows at the technique which had completely ruined the one she was employing.

She turns away, a look of disapproval on her face, but murmurs something under her breath.

Asherick gets a quizzical look upon his face, "And just what are you implying Sniper? All of those men there ...except, Verik himself, radiate strong evil... I felt their presence before I entered this place. None of them were reported to be 'weatlhy men' or possess large stocks of livestock for sale. Nor was it reported that they stole any large amount of gold to invest in some slaughter business. Opening a butchery in a time of crisis like this seems a little... odd. Then we arrive and find after a little search remains of a human cadaver... it does not take a genius to draw some very unpleasant conclusions! My interest is to know if I'm correct in my... dark assumptions or weather their is some unfortunate tragedy that has occurred here that they seek to conceal out of fear. It IS a butchery and accidents do happen..."

Una turns to the paladin, a look of anger on her face.

"You have been behaving strangely yourself since you left the office with that odd expression on your face. And then no sooner had you come downstairs you immediately go to the grate in the floor and start making further threats and accusations. You have made such a fuss over the 'great evil' in this place, and yet so far we have not really seen any evil. Just you flitting around the place as fast as you please as though the hellknights themselves are at your heels."

She crosses her arms over her chest.

"How are we to know that it is not you who is the 'great evil'? It is one thing to claim you are good and pure, but so far I have seen only a megalomaniacal tendency to control and manipulate others, and keep secrets from them. You are not who you say you are."

Ashe looks at the Una...perplexed, "Are you not paying attention? Look at the prisoners reactions... they seem to get more nervous the longer we search especially - I noticed when either Risdin or I search anywhere near the slaughter grate. Someone was killed here... {he pats his belt pouch indicating where the severed hand is currently being stored wrapped in cloth...} we have found remains... someone's hand at least and its a butchery. Perhaps you do not deal with fighting the scum element of society as much as I do but it is a 'classic' means of getting rid of a inconvenient body after a murder - feeding it to pigs or having it ground up and thrown out with the rest of the butchery refuse... who will know the difference{?} that or just dumping the corpse in the river? If you don't want anyone to know that the person is dead/murdered... dumping them in the river is not an option... but a butchery... who would know the difference without really looking? As for the 'great evil' in my experience if people are willing to murder once... if they get away with it... they'll not be shy about doing it again. Who knows how many people have met an 'untimely' fate in this place?"

He frowns, "ME a great evil? You have a paladin of ABADAR with you... ask him? I'm curious as to know why he has not detected evil here as well... but he may not have thought it WORTH while!"

Ashe gets a shocked expression on his face, 'Megalomaniacal tendency to control and manipulate...', you mean by that my concern for all of your safety and desire not so see any of you put at unnecessary risk if it can be avoided? You wonder why I have a 'curious look upon my face' its because I'm amused at your lack of any order or plan or even coherent use of tactics, barring Shakhan who though a good warrior with a good sense for combat is a little too headstrong for his own good somewhat. I only made suggestions and even gave of my own funds to address things I saw as a significant weakness in your team's preparation... or lack there of any team tactics! I demanded no one do anything I've suggested! I realize none of you are soldiers or even as far as I can tell career mercenaries so I backed off and hoped things would not get so serious that I could not help you against a serious enemy. I, sadly, understand sometimes the best teacher for being prepared is a few of your comrades to end up dead on the floor! I'd do what I could to prevent that but ultimately it would have to be up to you to 'fight smarter'! If these deserters would have been prepared it would have been a completely different battle here. I have been NOTHING but completely honest with ALL of you. I have no idea where your accusations are coming from?"

Then his voice turns bitter, "...or does this have more to do with my being a part of the nobility here in Korvosa than any real failing on my part? I'll let you know right now... I love this city! Its people are my family, and I've fought and bled to protect it! You'll not likely find any other noble as dedicated to this city and willing to help its poor and downtrodden with real deeds of generosity and devotion! Everyday I risk my life fighting for the poor and underprivileged of Korvosa not only from the scum on the streets but also the scum in the palaces among the nobility who see the poor as a means to swell their own wealth and prosperity... regardless of how many innocent lives they crush and snuff out in the process! The thought of Korvosan Guard abusing their authority and position to murder its citizenry fills me with rage! So YES! I'll fly around here like Hellknights are after me... cause, by the way, they are... I stand for Justice and and Mercy not Law and Brutal Tyranny like these servants of HELL; And I'll continue seeking the truth behind this murder until I am satisfied that the guilty have been brought to Justice!"

With that Ashe turns away from her... no long interested in anything the woman has to say. Duty drives him solely now. He is angry but he will not let it distract him for seeking the truth behind whatever is going on here.

Hefting the Glaive he opens the grate and begins sorting through with as much thoroughness as he can the grizzly task of finding the rest of the slain man's corpse... at least he might be given a descent burial if most of his body can be reclaimed.

Well... Una asked for that! lol! Here's your RP conflict Megan... Ashe would have preferred it at a more opportune time but such accusations against his honor cannot go unanswered! :)

Una turns to Risdin, having no intention of speaking to Ashe again.

"It is interesting, is it not, Risdin, how defensive a man can become when someone starts questioning their motives? That alone provides some clues to his true intentions. He claims to be a paragon of justice and mercy, yet insults us with exaggerated tales of inefficiency. From what I have seen, your gentle and reflective manner is a greater indication of nobility than the grandstanding pompous oaf we see before us now. If he angers this easily, he must seek atonement from his deity on a regular basis."

Una shrugs, then looks over at Shakhan. "He claims authority here, but I do not see any reason to follow him or his orders. Gather enough rope to tie up the prisoners. All of them." Although spoken as a command, the words do not bear an imperial tone, though the last sentence seems to be a pointed stab at Ashe's decision not to bind Verik.

Ashe says to the team, "So now we see who is the manipulator.. praise in one moment and insults the next, what is more meant Risdin is you do not question but follow well. I do not seek to lead you I'd rather leave that to your own sense of responsibility. In all the missions I've done as a Pathfinder... not once have we required a leader. I claim no authority over any of you other than the authority of a dully appointed officer in the Korvosan Guard. I make tactical suggestions because I hope to assist you all in gaining victorious results with your efforts and risk no one 's life unnecessarily. You are all free to follow whoever you chose so long as you do not break the laws of Korvosa or threaten her citizens. Leave if that is your choice - its obvious the murder of the innocent is not something important to the sniper. But consider this... callous leaders rarely lead their followers anywhere other than an early grave..."

He continues his search.

I don't think there's much more to it. Some shmuck got the chop. Maybe some other shmuck got the chop the week before."

He looks over at Ashe's efforts. "I don't think you'll find any body. There's not enough food to go around - the corpse would be used to make meats and sausage."

"Sometimes we take this for granted, and rely on it too much."

She knocks on his armor, directly over his heart.

"True freedom lies in embracing what beats beneath the shell."

She turns back to her task at hand, binding the prisoners together as Ashe and Hytogg continue their search.

Hmm... and to think I slept through all this!

OK. Una, you can find plenty of rope - there's a whole load of it in the shed where the old cart is stored out in the yard. (Yes, your piglet friend comes to see you when you go out there!)

The fellow who Shakhan was prodding earlier speaks up.

"Sirs. I wasn't really happy with what was goin' on, but... well. Anyhow, my name's Parns, an' I was a butcher afore I joined the Guard. Which, to be honest, wasn't half as good a job as I'd thought it'd be. So when the Corporal asked me to join this venture I was happy to do so. But the others, they's as call themselves the 'Cow Hammer Boys' and have been taking mercenary jobs on the side and, well, sometimes bringin' back things to butcher like, well, as they shouldn't. Didna know quite what to do, likely I'd get butchered meself iffen I objected too much."

One of the other fellows who'd been working in here when you arrived says something very unpleasant about Parns' ancestry and indicates that his life will be short and none-too-sweet hereafter. The third one glowers.

Poking around under the grate reveals that there's a cesspit underneath, opening into a disused sewer tunnel underneath, which probably leads to the river towards the east. It's really filthy down there, but Whiteplume's probing with the business end of a pole-arm reveals numerous fragmentary human remains (mostly partially
destroyed heads, hands, and feet), indicative of the unsavory goings-on in the slaughterhouse above.

What now?

How large is the piglet? And also, has Verik left or is he still hanging around? I think Ashe told him he could go.

At the discovery of some quantities of human meat being given to the poor, she frowns. "The Guard should be warned of this. It may be necessary to establish a quarantine in this district. The eating of human flesh is one way a plague can spark."

She turns towards the Cow Hammer Boys. "What mercenary jobs did you take? Who all have you killed?"

He will not look at the 'Cowhammer Boys', "'Private' Parns, I can make no promises... but if you make a full truthful disclosure, I will explain your situation to the Lady Marshal, and ask her consider your circumstances... but it will be completely up to her. This I can say with a certainty... the 'Cowhammer Boys'..will not be hurting any more citizens of Korvosa...EVER again!"

Ashe turns to the party,"...I ... cannot demand it of you... but if news of this ... crime gets to the public... it would seriously hurt the respect for the Korvosan Guard... perhaps critically so. I would only ask your discretion in this matter."

He is obviously deeply grieved at this shame upon the guard.

The piglet is about 4 months old. About the size of a Labrador dog.

Parns says, "They brought back some half-dozen corpses over the past few nights. Said they'd been paid to make 'em disappear."

The other two glower. (The one that was flattened in the hall, then healed by Whiteplume, is still out cold, by the way.)

Verik is standing in the corner looking more and more uncomfortable as things are revealed.

Ashe sighs... looking... weary.

"We should finish our search... there is one more room. Then lets get out of here... I need to report... this sordid affair. Nothing more... by us, at least, can be done for the victims."

Ashe cleans his glaive off in one of the water vats and sheaths it at his back again... making his way to the northern set of double-doors unopened in this room...

Shakhan inspects the bindings of the two unfriendly prisoners, to make sure they will stay put - and double checks and binds the one out in the hallway too. When he notices the deadly stares one of the cow hammer boys is giving him he goes up real close, the haft of his axe on the throat of the deserter. "Easy job easy money. I'm not paid to keep you healthy. Don't forget it."

Oh, by the way Hytogg does clean up Ashe. Well except for one little spot just at the rear of his armor. Humor and humility often go hand in hand

LOL! :)

Ashe bows respectfully, "Thank you master Hytogg... it is much appreciated..."

Ashe moves toward the northern double-doors and drawing his sword and readying his shield he opens them - mindful that not all foes will detect as evil.

Hytogg: No magic downstairs (apart from that silver dagger Whiteplume's got...)

Italics might be a good idea :) Apologies, don't mean to neglect you!

Shakhan, your threats earn you another glare but no more back-chat!

Whiteplume: You open the double doors cautiously. Euwch! The air in this room is stale, stinking of day-old meat and blood. Straw litters the floor, scattered to catch what drips from the meat hooks affixed to the walls and ceiling on metal rods. To the north is a low blood-stained table and two barrels of salt. An iron bar extends through a narrow hole at the top of the doors; the bar runs along the ceiling for five feet before ending at a vertical pole running floor to ceiling.

Most of the meat here looks like pork or beef.

Asherick, crinkles his nose at the stale smell of old blood distastefully.

He enters the salted meat storage and makes a cursor search for anything of worth... or any other 'curious meats'...

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

He exits using the other door from the entry hallway and check the still unconscious man.

Heal: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

Then he returns to the party completing the circuit, "I find no one else here..."

Gesturing to the room he just entered, "That is a salted meat storage."

Turning to Una, "You make a wise point all the meat sold from this place is suspect... I do indeed need to inform the guard to retrieve their sold meat lest disease follow. But I found sales records upstairs that if accurate enough may be able to assist in that effort. Have you searched the other rooms you came through on entry 'Sniper' and paladin Aramack? If so we are done here... lets round up these... these.. and take them back the the Citadel."

Ashe is unwilling to call the wicked ones 'men'.

By the way our Disccussion thread seems to have... vanished. I can't find it or many others I've been party to... or am I just loopy... did we ever have one for this thread?

Anyways just wanted to say Ashe is not going to keep that dagger to himself... he is not sure if it is cursed and does not want to mention it around the prisoners... for fear it might drive them by some evil means to try 'against all reason' to reacquire the dagger through immediate violence. He is not sure what evil the dagger has worked here and does not want to risk having to harm the prisoners further. Once they are in custody he plans to fully disclose what he has found to the party with stern warnings about keeping evil objects in their presence... but will go along with the party vote, whatever is decided. It is, after all, only a dagger, no need to fight over it and ruin a seemingly good forming team relationship! But he does NOT want it in his possession - good results rarely come from relying on evil powers!

Una shakes her head. "No, we did not have time to search. And the animal pens seemed rather fruitless in any event. I have only searched for rope to bind the men."

We don't have a discussion thread, or if we do, its under the old DM's name. Anyone seen Risdin lately?

Ashe moves to 'round up' the prisoners and escort them out to the front hallway. He will walk over to the downed man bound in the hallway and lay his hand upon him. A golden radiance flashes warmly over the man.

Lay On Hands - 1 use: Heal 1d6 ⇒ 2

Then Ashe helps the man stand putting him in line with the rest of the prisoners.

Ashe then moves 'private' Parns and 'corporal' Verik separate from the others next to him taking personal custody to escort them. Separated from the others Ashe detects evil upon them both quickly.

Turning to the party, "Are we ready to leave then?"

Risdin is still around - he must've slept through the flurry of fire on this thread :P

"We haven't searched this place much yet - and we should look for things to take a long," Shakhan points to the barrels of salt, "with the place arrested like this, it will be minutes before looters get in here. If we're missing anything; there probably won't be a second chance."

Male Human Wizard (Illusionist) 2 / Cleric2

"Not to mention the fact they probably weren't doing this for fun". "They must have some profit from their dastardly ways concealed in here somewhere". "The question is do we look for it ourselves, or should I just turn them into toads if they don't tell us where to look"?

Asherick glances around the grimy interior of the butchery a dubious look upon his face, in reply to Shakhan, "...Are you sure its needed? The major rooms have been searched... and those barrels of salt, valuable though they may be, we'd need a wagon and horses to move?"

Ashe turns and shrugs at Hytogg, "...Its just as likely these miscreants squandered their cash ...like their lives - on gambling, liquor and whores!!!"

He chuckles, "...well toads would have trouble telling us anything."

Ashe turns to 'private' Parn's, "Well 'private' Parns? Is there a private hidden stash around here?"

Ashe fixes 'private' Parns with a stern gaze, "Well private?"

Checked up on Risdin - he's knocked up with a big exam he is preparing for.

Shakhan grunts, satisfied, "Not on my plate that Korvosa will miss out on salt barrels."

Parns looks uncomfortable.

"Meat we wuz givin' away, not selling. Dunno where it came from, neither. I jus' chopped it up. T'others were making a pretty coins from their sideline work, but wasna' sharing it wiv me, as I wanted none of what thay was doin'."

He looks sidelong at the others, who are giving him some evil looks.

(Whiteplume, Parns detects as barely evil, as compared to the other three.)

And to cater to your pleasures, here is an OOC thread to chat away in!

"Heh, yeah - that guy over there was threatening Parns earlier. Tell the Field Marshall to have'em in separate cells. Or not, if you want some sports. Heh."

Apologies for lack of posting. Mucho work!

After leaning against a door frame for a while and listening to the chaotic exchange, Risdin dozes off in to dreamland. He finally wakes up to find that the hosts have arranged themselves neatly with ropes and that the guests are now barking orders.

Risdin looks up, eyes still blurry, and speaks to the general group.

"Salt? Do we need to preserve some food?", he sighs,"I don't understand what the holdup is. Let's get all of these guys on their feet and in the streets. Justice and all of that - et cetera, et cetera."

He almost coughs as he gasps for air to complete a yawn.

Ashe considers all the views and nods, "I think it unwise to ignore the wisdom of the Master Hytogg... when just a few moments prevention could spare a lot of consternation latter. It will only take a few more moments... Master Hytogg and I will do a quick search in the of the rest of the building...just to make sure there was nothing missed. I'm sure the much vaunted Korvosan ale will not run out in the five minutes it will take for us to search!"

Ashe will head toward the rooms Risdin and Une entered through and do mostly a cursor search... he does not expect to find anything he is just making sure there are not other brigands hiding about.

Searching B5, and B6 then the yard with the wagon. Ashe will look in the stalls quickly, the livestock yard, the wagon bed for any goods left behind.

Perception: Take 10! 10 + 2 = 12
