Hmm... I'll look into that. Haven't heard of that feat. I was hoping their might be an...'In-Game' encounter that might spur Ashe along the route of taking a level of Bard... none has presented itself thus far. Plus we level a bit slowly...but that just the nature of a PbP.

I was also thinking of perhaps finding a romantic interest for Ashe to liven up the story somewhat... but not many npc's that might be available... Marshal Kroft is a conflict of some interests... and I think she's quite a bit older than Ashe. Zellara's a ghost... lol. Just have to see.

I wasn't actually planning to take a level of Bard for Ashe until after Paladin Lvl 6 unless something else inspires an earlier choice to do so.

EDIT: Aha...found it, in the Ultimate magic! Wow. Interesting feat... but Ashe will not be able to take it before 8th level... His Intelligence is only a 12. His 4th level Stat increase is going to be Charisma... of course.

By the way... I have posted this post using my Asherick "Ashe" Whiteplume - PFS character record for organized play. It needs some updating as he is now 12th level in organized play... but you can get some idea of where I'm going with his build for indeed - they are the same character!

No worries.

I am enjoying this PBP a lot. And Ashe is quite a decent Pally to work with thus far. He seems a bit light hearted for the Oath of Vengeance, but take a look, It's in UM.

Mechanical benefits are nice and it suits Pally role players who want a harder edge to their Char.

You may have gathered, I merged the Magus char I wanted with the Vengeance based Ragathiel.worship. Should be interesting when you and Varrel start travelling together. Especially when Varrel gets the Sleep hex and we start getting helpless foes.

I have another campaign in mind, though, but its a bit weird/fantastical, and really relies on some imagination and imaginative abilities of the players. It's the Dark Tower campaign (based on the MB board game of the same name, not on the Stephen King novels). Let me know if you are interested, and I'll give you dibs on character submission. Anyone else here is welcome to join, but there might be some strange requirements... :) I give people homework. :P

Here's what could have happened:
Varrel is a slave, turned bodyguard. Being armed at all times is in the job description. He doesn't trust anyone and didn't know his master betrayed him till now. That's why he didn't take Chatterbeak into the ship with him, (with instructions to get help if something went wrong)

Varrel would have only been there a day, (otherwise he'd surely be dead) by the time the PC's arrived so not sure if Spiderking will have sold it yet.

Here's the slave of a unfavored Thrune family member who lives in a small estate far from the capital. He doesn't know but his master felt betrayed when he spied Varrel praying to Ragathiel, (an Empreal Lord Varrel learned of from his latest combat teacher, an order of the Godclaw Paladin who also venerated the lord.) Deciding Varrel was no longer worth the trouble, on a business trip to Korvosa, his Master, who made the Spiderking's aquaintence while visiting Eels End, saw an opportunity to 'Offload' his slave. He sent Varrel, alone, to pick up something from the Spiderking. That's how he ended up in his cell. Weather his master is still in Korvosa is up to you, but Chatterbeak was about to fly to the Inn they were staying at when he saw the fight

Hey, guys.

It dawned on me over the weekend, with my AC being so low I'm gonna be a real draw on healing rescources (that's what I get for not being a dex Magus.

Was wondering if anybody minded if I redid Varrel as a Half-Elf rather than full elf.

It keeps the changes to a minimum but he'd look like this-

Build: Hexcrafter 20, Varrel
Race: Half-Elf (low light vis, immune to sleep +2vs enchantment, Alt Racial Trait- Adaptability +2 Will save instead of skill focus)
Favored Class- Magus (hit points)
STR 16 (20)
DEX 14
CON 14
WIS 7
INT 19 (20)
CHA 7
Skills- 7per level, Favored Bonus: HP
Traits: Indomitable Faith+1 Will saves, Magical Lineage (Shocking grasp)

The only real difference is it lets me dump Wis to 7 (instead of 10 in Elf form) and I get the Will save back via Avanced Players guide Duel Mind Trait replacing normal Half-Elf skill focus.

That freed up enough points to get DEX to 14 (instead of 13) and Con to 14 (instead of 12).

Adding +1 AC and 3HP (since we're 3rd level)

barring losing the elven +2 vs SR the build is the same.

Megan, veto this if you don't like it and I'll continue as is.
Just would like to swap if possible. Obviously I'll role play the 'absent minded professor' for high int and low wis.

Of course you should play what you like... but something to consider... we are all using the PFS Standard points for stats... no one is going to have super exceptional stats anyways. But also... after we resolve the 'Spider's Lair'... likely we will all be going to 4th level anyways and you will get your stat point. I expect that would go to the 13 Dex to increase it to 14.

Also, Tactical wise... your shield spell which is on the Magus' spell list will more than compensate for a lower... on average AC than the Tank fighters - cause it will stack with your worn armor! That's the equivalent of a Tower Shield... and the only two fighter types in the group that might possibly use those without a penalty are Una and Shakhan... and they are both DEX fighters mostly! Fighters get proficiency with Tower Shield... Paladins do not {strangely enough}.

You should also remember it is relatively cheap to enchant armor... though indeed we have been somewhat 'thin' on treasure... we are still only in the first module and only 3rd level. I'm sure the chance for Varrel to obtain some enchanted Mithril Chain Shirt Armor will eventually be presented... and such your armor/AC concerns will then be a thing of the past.

LOL! I just wish I could save enough gold to upgrade Ashe's armor to Masterwork Full Plate... he just can't seem to hold on to cash... lol!

Really .. I think your current AC is just fine honestly, your not the 'front' like warrior type... many who play Magus' make the mistake of feeling that way. you are a Warrior... no less but more of a support Warrior ...at least until your magic is stronger.

Though in truth AT THIS LEVEL you could potentially take out a whole group of combatants with one spell FAR exceeding Ashe's combat efficiency! Look at what color spray does to foes! I know my Half-Elf Society Magus 'Reyhansu' did a similar thing to a entire bar of brawlers coming at him took out 5 opponents with one spell in the Shades of Ice: Written in Blood Season 2-15# Module! Very effective! :)

Yeah, no worries.

I have only played one magus before and it was heaps of fun, but it was for our home game and we usually run with whatever scores you want as long as your total mod does not exceed 8 and no score can be lower than 9.

I'll be putting that 4th level point in dex.

I lowered Varrel's INT from 19 to 18.
That makes dex 14, Con 13.

That 19 wasn't gonna do heaps more for a 6th level caster. I'll be interested to see how it goes though. The previous Magus I played was a pure blaster. Reflex saves are usually weak on monsters so a lower save DC was ok.

With Varrel I plan on using spell Combat/Spellstrike with the curse spells from accursed Strike, Blindness for example. That's a good save on most things so if not working I'll go back to blasts.

Just for a little tactics guys, once I get slumber hex at level 4 I intend to use it at the start of combat.

This'll:
1. Force a save or lose straight up, hopefully saving us damage.
2. Give Ashe, Shaktan time toclose and I can flank next round.
3. If the enemy melee targets me, he'll have to close first, giving up his full attack and eating my Spell Combat/Spellstrike next round.

Ashe and me will probably need a lot of rope, since I'm unsure if Sir Whiteplume is willing to allow a Coupe de Grais. Shaktan probably wouldn't care.

Hmmm... Coup De Grace... the first rule of being a Lawful characters is that there are VERY few rules that can be applied universally all the time. Such an approach is INHERENTLY unjust as not every law or rule is applicable to life which is a naturally disorganized system. Different situations take different measures, though {and here is the thing most lawful characters fail to see} following the principles of the law is the goal... obeying its spirit more-so than the letter of it per se'... but sticking as close to it as is reasonably possible.

In short to say that Ashe would never allow a 'Coup De Grace' is short -sighted, as "Some things... and sadly some people... just need killing.", but if a foe is not a creature ruled by nature... but has the capability of CHOICE... if it can be subdued and brought to face its crimes in a court of justice with legal jurisdiction to try such an individual... then yes... Ashe is obliged to try to apprehend wrong doers and turn them over to the authorities to face punishment for their crimes.

The purpose of such punishment is in hopes that wrong doers will see the error of their deeds and cease engaging in such anti-social activities. That is patently IMPOSSIBLE if you kill every wrong doer you come across.

The watch word of the Good and Just is MERCY above all things... though mercy has its limits and JUSTICE the second watchword is not letting the wicked go forth to commit their crimes again unpunished. So even if mercy is shown to a wrong doer... they must be forced to accept the punishment for their crimes to drive home the point that everyone is responsible for their own actions and society as a whole will hold them accountable for actions deemed criminal, and that they will have to face the consequences of the punishment for such activities.

Ashe would have no problem delivering a death sentence to an unrepentant murderer... but would prefer to turn such an individual over to the established authorities to mete out such a judgement for the PRINCIPLE of supporting the LAW and ORDER of society. It shows his support for the system of laws and punishments and serves as an example to the citizen public that Justice is Served and that the guilty will be punished by the authorities. It builds their faith and belief in the system of laws and inspires fewer to go against such laws as they can readily see that justice will find those involved in such criminal activities and punish them.

But I think your point is about Varrel's devotion to vengeance... his God's Domain of Influence and dogma.

Ashe would try to reason with Varrel that Vengeance is not murder... though it can be. But Vengeance is not necessarily unjust either. A person wronged can indeed have Vengeance upon a foe when a foe is merely brought to justice as well. In fact, perhaps, in some points of view it is more... 'vengeful' a make a hated foe suffer with living through his defeat and punishment. But also since his god is a god of vengeance - do not those avenged upon also deserve the chance at vengeance? In his views right or wrong matter little... right? Just so long as vengeance is served. I'm sure his god would care little if vengeance was done by one or another... vengeance is not justice... but justice... CAN be vengeance! So killing every enemy is not necessarily being devoted to vengeance... just murderous.

It all depends upon how you wish to look upon it... from a certain point of view.

Seems you're a good first, law second type of Pally.

Varrel holds a similar, although bleaker view. Life as a slave is black and white. Serve or be punished. He sees lawbreakers and evil doers in the same light. He will not kill without evidence of guilt but will extract immediate punishement if no capable lawful authority with the means will act.

He'd turn over the Spiderking IF he thought justce would be served. If not he'll keep a close eye on proceedings and if needed, take matters into his own hands. What little he knows of Ragathiel does speak to his heart, but the limited knowledge he has of his patron was given through the eyes of a Hellknight.

Ah. That explains much. Hellkinghts have a...'honor' of sorts and not ALL of them are ate up with evil! But they do have a very narrow-minded and simple view of life, which is quite often NEVER as simple as... 'punish the lawbreakers!

LOL! Sorry, Ashe being a Andoran political faction member, {at least for now... in his development}, Ashe is all about freedom of choice and actions... so he'll try to back off that if possible.

Monsters are different from sentient, sapient races... they have nature and many times no choice to make the 'moral' decision. So Ashe will not be so insistent on mercy for wicked monsters... unless it furthers the cause of goodness in some fashion. "Some things... just need killing."

Grrr.. I HATE Double posting... but I'd like to know Megs... are we getting close to level 4... with the assault upon the "Spider's Lair"?

Also, I'd like to put in a bid for the Ring of Feather Fall for Ashe.
My reasoning is that in his heavy armor Ashe has the worse Armor check penalty for climbing and acrobatics rolls to avoid many hazards that involve falling. Also with his proclivity to take point, it would nice to have some protection to avoid pitfalls and the like.

It's of course open for discussion which is why I'm bringing it up. I could have the best reasons in the world for wanting the items but that does not mean I should necessarily get it!

Though I would like to propose that items we find that are specifically useful to specific classes ... {ie. Magic staves and wands for Wizards, Sorcerers and divine versions for clerics, magic swords for fighter types, etc.} that they be given first pick of these items useful and mostly designed for their specific class.

In our sit down games usually we split treasure up in a reasonable manner with everyone understanding that not everyone will necessarily get an item every time items are found, but understanding that they will get access to something eventually as needed so everyone is fairly apportioned.

Most of the items found in this game thus far have been more useful to the wizardly types. But I'm confident more items will be found.

Though the dust of appearance, and the ring of feather fall, could be useful to anyone in truth.

As for Ashe and the ring of feather fall... if Ashe should get it by party consensus... he will not be keeping it forever... as at 7th level he will be taking a level of Bard and thus no longer need it. He will return it to the party pool of items.

My only request is that items found that are specifically useless to everyone in the party that they NOT be sold without the party spliting the sale price evenly so everyone gets some benefit of the items value as opposed to one individual getting all the gold for an item the party found through mutual efforts.

As for loot, that's up to you lot. The Field Marshal did make it clear that, unless there's something specific (like those letters) that she's asked you to fetch, you are entitled to anything that you can, ahem, acquire.

Hytogg, since our characters are living together it may be cheaper if we synchronize our spellbooks. I'm not sure if you are going cleric or wizard next.

If you go wizard, don't learn Glitterdust, I already learnt it and Frigid Touch and you are able to use my spellbook if you like and learn any spells i have, (enlarge person) for example and I won't charge you. You still have to add spells at the SRD price.

On further consideration ... I probably should have posted this here instead... my bad.

For Ashe besides the Ring of Feather Fall, I'd really like to be able to afford a set of Full Plate-Mw [1,650gp!], but I'm not thinking its gonna happen. So likely I'll have to settle for having his Longsword 'Consecrated' [+150gp] and his Heavy Steel Shield 'Sanctified' [+100gp] as per the published options in the Pathfinder Supplement - Adventurer's Armory pp. 24-25 {assuming, of course, you will allow those options}.

No accusation being thrown your way Meggan... but I notice Ashe seems REALLY under-geared for his level compared to what at level 4 he had as a Pathfinder! So all those people out there who complain that the Pathfinder Organized Play Scenarios do not pay out enough cash... should be grateful for what they get! At 4th level Ashe had Full Plate +1 and a Heavy Steel Shield +1 in Pathfinder play! :)

As drugs are considered like potions they are not mundane items they sell for full value. [175gp total]

While Ashe finds the use of poison odious in principle, neither of these poisons are lethal... they are debilitating. So Ashe is not COMPLETELY against their use in... dire situations. But an enterprising rogue could sell them to the legal Thieves' guild here in Korvosa the 'Cerulean Society' for full value. Regardless... Ashe will make NO USE of such questionable methods, nor accept ANY GOLD from their sale.

Now any of the Mundane items that someone might like to claim and keep are ... of course up to everyones choice. I kinda like the idea of Shakhan with the Bladed Gauntlets-Mw... but he seems more to prefer his Axe. :)

I included all these options because Ashe may be the Moral Compass of the party... offering a clear path of goodness and lawful behavior but I have no intention of his presence serving as the 'Moral Noose' of the party... to beat them into doing as He sees right and proper! There is nothing that gives him the right to demand all the other members play nice and that would ruin everyone's fun... including mine.

So. Does anyone else wish to put in a claim for the Ring {Tiny Jade Dragonfly} of Feather Fall?

If not I'll keep in on Ashe's sheet.

Also, would the party agree to let Ashe trade all the 'Enforcer Gear' for a Suit of Full Plate Armor?

I'm good with Hytogg's elite body guard having the shiniest, and best armor. It only increases Hytogg's prestige, so go for the trade in as far as I'm concerned.

My vote is unless Risden shows up by the end of the week to claim his share of the spoils he's left out. It would be a shame to have this amount of funds out there being wasted if he's not going to play.

Of the magic items Hytogg would not complain about either the scroll of Blur, or the potion of invisibility...but neither one get's him overly excited.

Hmmm... I see no one is putting in a claim for the Leather Armor +1

The only persoan who might want it..Una already has Studded Leather-Masterwork so she's taking no armor check penalties to her Dex skills.

Shakhan prefers to use no armor at all... relying on Mage Armor potions... {ingenious by the way! :)}

I'd like to propose we sell the leather Armor for its gold value. No point in hanging onto it if no one will use it.

Leather Armor +1 has a Market value of 1,160gp total

If we sell it at half-Price, that is 580gp Sell Value

for 759.

I'll sell my masterwork Scimitar 157gp, 5sp (1/2value) taking my money to 916gp , 5sp.

Then buy a Cold Iron, Masterwork Scimitar for 330gp. Also add magic missile, Ill Omen and Weaponwand to my spellbook for 80gp. Purchased the scrolls from Academae for 25gp each, magic missile borrowed Hytogg's spellbook. 10gp each to put in my spellbook.
Also sell my bow for 15gp and buy a Compound
Shortbow with a +3draw for 330.
