"Well, I shouldna be gossiping about guests really... but 'e stinks, something mouldy or muddy, like. And is a surly one. Came yesterday, for the trial, hope 'e will be off soon as 'e has spoken. Hafta clean the room afore we can let it agin, we will," says the bartender.

"Only visitor's been the lawyer, prosecutor fellow. 'E paid the bill. In advance, be thanked."

Male Half-Elf Rogue/ 4

Unless Tre' disputes, Dillan will lead them to Karl's cottage through the center of town; he'll keep his cloak about him (hood up) attempting to blend in to the masses. He will keep his eyes aware of his surroundings, paying particular interest to anyone observing them leaving the courthouse, and perhaps even following them...

Whilst Dillan blends with the crowd, Tre walks boldly along, feeling at home in this city of learning. He strides with purpose, only making casual glances towards Dillan.

"Youse best go up - turn right at the top of the stairs and along to the end of the corridor."

Karl's Cottage

When Dillan and Tre'duinne get there, there's a man digging in the garden. The place looks neat and tidy, but there are no flowers... he's turned the entire garden into a vegetable plot. Every other cottage in the row has colourful flowerbeds.

Dillan silently walks up to the man, "Not found of flowers?"

The gardener's head turns. His face is burn-scarred, and his eyes are opaque. His gaze seems directed over Dillan's shoulder as he replies, "Flowers work best for them as can see them, master. At least I can still eat my veggies. Be there anything I can do for you?"

"I'm sorry?" says the blind man. "It's all in the past now. Everything's gone. No point in raking over dead embers. Would you like to come in?"

Herstag

Barret, you're a bit ahead, as you had 10 miles to ride, the rest had to walk across town! But we'll handwave so you don't die of boredom...

Now abandoned and overgrown, the village of Hergstag lies some 10 miles northwest of Lepidstadt. The farmland has fallen to ruin, and now even the well-trodden pathways around the area are quite hard to follow. The crops have gone to seed and high corn grows everywhere. The village's farmhouses have all been abandoned, and while some furniture such as tables and washboards remain, the homes have been given over to termites and cockroaches. In the northern portion of the village, the land turns to deep bog and the paths here are even harder to follow. By now it's dark amd overcast.

And there's [i]something[i] moving in the village amidst the ruined houses. A swirling shadow of darkness amidst the shadows with glowing red lights within... fair makes your hair stand on end.

Do you want to look around the village or will you carry on to the mill, which you have been told is somewhere to the north of the abandoned village?

Stats:
AC 15/12/13 HP 34/34 F+3 R+3 W+4 Init+2 Per+4

"Yeah, from the lawyers." Sorin reaches for the door handle and lets himself in, being sure to leave the door slightly ajar in case he needs to make a quick escape. He looks around the interior of the room, taking in the appearance of the witness. "It shouldn't take too long. Just need to go over some of the details with you in advance of the trial."

Male Half-Elf Rogue/ 4

"We would be delighted to come in sir," Dillan says gently leading the man to his door, "I do understand it is all in the past but I believe you have been asked to recall things in the upcoming trial."

Once inside the cottage

"My friend and I are here to ensure the beast recieves a fair trial. There has been some thoughts of another criminal that could be using the beast as a scapegoat." He sighes, "And if this were true then the guilty party would still be free amongst the wonderful people here and could cause much more harm."

Male Elf Wizard (necromancy/undead)/4 HPs 24/24

"I think what my friend means, is that you would want the truly guilty to be punished, not some innocent whom the authorities might easily pin the blame on. For then the crime is twice as worse, a criminal roams free to do their evil, whilst an innocent rots in goal or hangs. A second crime against you, a victim of the original crime, when Pharesma judges you, you would not want the blood of an innocent on your hands. I am sure you want the true criminal to be found guilty. It is for this reason, to find the truly guilty party we must ask you to go over the incident again. This beast will either be implicated and be guilty, or he will be innocent and if hung, his death would rest heavy on a good citizen's conscious." Tre continues severely.

The smell is worse once you get into the room. Lazne is a grizzled, middle-aged man with dirty gray hair and skin the colour of swamp mud. He chews on a foul-smelling swamp weed and punctuates most of his sentences by spitting weed-juice onto the floor. He doesn't even trouble to aim at the spittoon.

"Whaddya want to know? Said it all once to the lawyer fella. Gonna hafta say it all again in the Courthouse. So, at first the Beast only took lone villagers who were outside at night, but it soon became bolder and began to attack houses. These attacks only ended when I organized the villagers and set a trap for the Beast. I recall that night well. We laid in wait for the Beast, who attacked just after nightfall. Armed with torches, we attacked and wounded the creature — a huge, hulking brute about 7 feet tall. The Beast took to the water, but we gave chase in our boats, pursuing it to the village boneyard, where it was attacked by a blood caiman."

Lazne grins.

"That Beast yelled oaths and curses that even the worst whore in Lepidstadt would blush to say as the gator attacked it, and bit a deep wound on the Beast's shoulder as it dragged the Beast under the water. Although the Beast's blood tainted the burial ground, forcing us to abandon it and build another, we thought it a small price to pay for the thing's death. When we heard that the Beast actually survived, that was all that I needed to tell my story to the authorities, and I'm looking forward to seeing it burn!

Karl's Cottage

"I suppose," says Karl, rather grudgingly, leading you into a neat if sparsely-furnished front room. He offers bread and wine.

"So, what do you want to know? I worked for Doctor Brada who founded the institution to cure those unfortunate individuals afflicted with madness and physical deformity. His motives were born, he told me, of his own horror at the fate of his uncle, who was burned by a mob because of his monstrous features. He tried various treatments, mostly unsuccesful, and sometimes got help from a couple of fellows called Vorkstag and Grine. They'd bring various potions and body parts round.

"One night this great monster came and a fight broke out. During the fight, lanterns were knocked over, spilling flaming oil, and eventually Sanctuary burned to the ground, taking Brada and his patients with it. Only the monster and I survived the fire, but the heat of the flames permanently blinded me. The last image I saw before the fire took my sight haunts me still — a shambling beast escaping the burning hospital while I tried to save my beloved master. I believe that creature was none other than the Beast of Lepidstadt. The bodies of Brada and most of his patients were never recovered, and their graves, which lie close to the hospital, are actually empty."

Herstag

Please make a Perception check, Barret.

Tre hums and harrs, as he quietly sighs, "Huh, I've heard of spells that let you talk to the dead, if only I had such a power. You can trust the dead to speak true." Having spoken to himself, he catches up with Dillan.

"Certainly sounds like a monster, a very nasty beast there, Sir. I'm sure from that description, we'll recognise the Beast, if he is the dock." He quietly whispers to Dillan, "His beast does not sound like the beast we saw accused of these crimes. There are some similarities, but not enough."

But I'm not sure that what killed the people in his village was the Beast. It may have been something else. A couple interesting things. Whatever they fought, they thought it was dead. As they fought it, a nasty blood caiman came in and dragged it away. Did terrible damage to the right shoulder. There should be scarring for sure if we can get a look at the Beast's shoulder. May be worth a visit to the village once he as testified and can show us around."

Male Half-Elf Rogue/ 4

Despite the time of day we'll continue to the Chymic Works...once we arrive if on approach the building looks closed we will stay opposite the building for a period of observation, preferably unnoticed...of course if it appears open then we can walk up and go on in.

Assuming you do go to the Cymic Works, you see that a tall, iron chimney belches yellow clouds into the sky from a small brick factory. Large leaded windows arch in a dozen places on its outer walls, but they are so begrimed as to be opaque. A large gate opens onto an inner courtyard beneath a sign proudly proclaiming "Vorkstag and Grine, Chymic Works." The building has two floors and a tower, topped by a lightning rod.

Despite the smoke (which smells acrid and quite vile) the place appears all shut up for the night.
