Cleric, do you know which of you is the Judas and WHAT'S AT THE TOP OF THAT TOWER to where the Gremlins retreat? Can we corner them or are they likely leading us somewhere?Iommi-Tyr Magnusson takes 9 Cold Iron bolts for his quiver and loads one Cold Iron bolt in his crossbow. He places 9 regular crossbow bolts on the floor for Tevaga to keep if she wants them.

The old priest confirms what Iommi-Tyr already suspected: the top of the stairs ends at the belfry, where the several great bells of Notre Dames hang, and can be wrung with ropes, as in future decades, would a certain hunchback who would much later be immortalized in Victor Hugo's novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame....
Tiberius Tacitus |
Tiberius made for an odd sight out on the streets of Paris, something his saviour took delight in. None the less, he found it easier to go about the city in the evening when he was less likely to draw the eye of the locals. While most knew of his presence in the city at this point in time, this did not prevent them from gawking and making him feel uncomfortable. Some would find it odd considering his past, but their stares were not the same as those of the crowd. Then he was cheered for and now he was simply a matter of curiosity.
It was during one of these nightly strolls that Tiberius' attention was drawn toward the great cathedral by the crashing of a great bell. Upon his arrival, he could hear a familiar sound coming from the halls within. Battle was nearby and instintively he dashed towards it.
Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Time to enter the fray!
As he moves to dash through the still open doorway, Tiberius pulls his shield out and straps it to his arm.
Tiberius Tacitus |
I should make mention for everyone that his shield is actually a klar so it might not be something your characters are familiar with seeing considering it's basically a blade strapped the skull of a giant lizard.
I also adjusted his AC upon realizing I had shield bonus marked as +2 when it should have been +1.

With Father Renaud safe and (somewhat) healed, and the Gremlins cornered at the belfry, Iommi-Tyr Magnusson, now with some Cold Iron bolts, Double Moves up the stairs (60') so that he can, next round, shoot from Point Blank range.
That is, when it's his turn to go again.
Gremlin of Notre Dame |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
The gremlins titter and squeal with fear or excitement as Hisao-San and Iommi-Tyr draw nearer up the stairs....
On their turn, they all step back from Iommi-Tyr (who has moved adjacent to the lowest and nearest gremlin) and dimension door 60 ft higher, bringing them a total of 120 ft up the spiraling stairs....
One giggles a shrill peal of chirpy laughter.... The others beckon and squeak with rat-like voices:
HEEHEEHEEHEE!!!
Ici, Monsiuers!
Oui, Monsiuers!
Michael the Warsong |
Then if the pastor is stable, Michael will help Charmaine move him out of the line of fire. Michael has a sneaking suspicion that another "accident" is about to occur and hopes the ones perusing the Gremlins are ready for it.
Move to Charmaine. Standard to aid in moving him.
Michael Johnson 66 |
Tiberius will spend the next round making his way towards the sounds of combat and pulling out his short sword.
Tiberius makes it to the cathedral's south facade, and hears the sounds of battle emerging from the great left-most doorway, Le Portal de la Vierge, which has a pair of double doors hanging open....
Gargoyle of Notre Dame |
The four gargoyles perched along the top of the facade (about 175 ft up), take up chunks of mortar and hurl them at the young (ancient) gladiator!
Hurled mortar with -3 range penalty and -4 improvised weapon penalty 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7 misses....
Hurled mortar with -3 range penalty and -4 improvised weapon penalty 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18 narrowly misses....
Hurled mortar with -3 range penalty and -4 improvised weapon penalty 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19 confirm 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (12) - 1 = 11 not a critical; deals 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 bludgeoning damage to Tiberius!
Hurled mortar with -3 range penalty and -4 improvised weapon penalty 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4 misses....
Michael Johnson 66 |
Three of the gargoyles (those not fascinated by Michael's lament) hurl chunks of masonry down on the young heroes attempting to rush into the cathedral....
Masonry hurled at Paddy 1d20+3 misses the rogue....
Masonry hurled at Alphonse 1d20+3 misses the paladin....
Masonry hurled at Tevaga 1d20+3 clips the inquisitor, dealing 1d8+3 bludgeoning damage!
Forgot to factor an additional -4 to hit for improvised weapons.... Neither Tevaga nor Alphonse was struck, so Charmaine still has two 1st level spells she didn't need to use up for CLW....
Michael Johnson 66 |
Was he aware of the attacks? If so, his AC was 20 and none of them hit. If not, his AC was 18 and two hit.
He saw them coming in time, but the natural 20 always hits, even if the total after adjustments would normally not equal or exceed the target's AC, per RAW....

Hisao spots a large, barrel-shaped shadow on the stairs, about 60 ft higher than where Iommi-Tyr stands (20 ft higher than Hisao), resting precariously on a 5-ft-square landing where the stairway turns around the inside of the tower.... The gremlins seem to be ready to push the barrel down the stairs toward Iommi-Tyr, who doesn't seem to see the barrel in the shadows....
Tiberius Tacitus |

Oh, my apologies. I missed that it was a natural 20. The 19 threw me off.

Looking at Inspiration in the Advanced Class Guide I see I can choose whether to spend a point on my Checks AFTER I roll the initial d20 but BEFORE the DM says if I succeed. This is what I'll do from now on.
An investigator has the ability to augment skill checks and ability checks through his brilliant inspiration. The investigator has an inspiration pool equal to 1/2 his investigator level + his Intelligence modifier (minimum 1). An investigator's inspiration pool refreshes each day, typically after he gets a restful night's sleep. As a free action, he can expend one use of inspiration from his pool to add 1d6 to the result of that check, including any on which he takes 10 or 20. This choice is made after the check is rolled and before the results are revealed. An investigator can only use inspiration once per check or roll. The investigator can use inspiration on any Knowledge, Linguistics, or Spellcraft skill checks without expending a use of inspiration, provided he's trained in the skill.
Inspiration can also be used on attack rolls and saving throws, at the cost of expending two uses of inspiration each time from the investigator's pool. In the case of saving throws, using inspiration is an immediate action rather than a free action.
Tiberius Tacitus |
Ignoring the pain in his shoulder, from where the piece of mortar had struck, Tiberius moves cautiously towards the open doorway. As he draws closer, he sees Michael and Charmaine pulling the pastor towards the door.
There had been few in the city Tiberius had talked to for any extended period of time, but the father was one of them. Despite the man's attempts to convert Tiberius, he had always treated him with respect and from time to time would greet him on the street during Tiberius' nightly excursions.
Hisao of the Yellow Reeds |
Seems like Iommi is above Hisao then?
Hisao rushes up to Iommi and shouts a warning pointing at the barrel with his blade and maintaining a full defensive stance.
Gremlin of Notre Dame |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Seeing the game is up, the gremlins hastily spring their trap, and the barrel, spiked all over with nails driven through the staves from within, comes bounding out of the shadows into view and toward the two adventurers on the stairs!
Vs Hisao 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13.... The agile ninja vaults over the barrel with a handless cartwheel through the air....
Vs Iommi 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8.... The sprightly Norseman also leaps over the barrel....
The barrel crashes apart on the landing a few feet below, exploding into staves and iron bands....

Iommi-Tyr Magnusson |
Iommi-Tyr Magnusson is very appreciative of the Chinaman's warning, having not seen the threat himself.
Ah, by the pain of Tyr's right hand! Thank you, Chinaman!
Standard Action: Iommi-Tyr Magnusson fires a bolt at the closest Gremlin he sees -- preferably one that Hisao of the Yellow Reeds pointed out,... then
Move Action: Reload w/ another Cold Iron bolt & move 5' forward.
Hand Crossbow w/ Cold Iron Bolt: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Paddy |
Paddy curses at the gremlins in a mix of English, Irish and another language. infernal if anyone speaks it
He then move to one of the gremlin and tries to skewer it with the bolt.
Take that, ya wee monster!
attack: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 - 4 = 11d4 ⇒ 31d3 ⇒ 2 I am assuming the bolt is a light weapon, so weapon finesse applies I think, unsure for damage so rolled two sets

[dice=attack] 1d20 + 4 -4; 1d4; 1d3 I am assuming the bolt is a light weapon, so weapon finesse applies I think, unsure for damage so rolled two sets
The gremlin dodges Paddy's thrust and sticks it's purplish tongue out at him, while blowing a rude sound....
Michael the Warsong |
With the gremlins out of sight and the wounded priest being cared for, Michael grabs some more arrows and heads up the stairs after them.
Move to grab 10 cold iron arrows and move towards and up the stairs. Unlikely to get far.
Tevaga the redeemer |
Tevaga keep's an eye on the belfry as she waits for the acolyte to return. If she can spot a gremlin, she will fire at it.
perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
She also shouts:
Get the priest OUT of the bellfry, we dont want another bell falling on him!

So,...
Tevaga the Redeemer is downstairs awaiting a Cold Iron dagger or something from an Acolyte.
Tiberious Tacitus and Charmaine Da'vi are near her and still protecting Father Renaud.
Paddy the Loon, Michael the Warsong and Alphonse Veritas are going up the stairs in an attempt to steal all the kills from me.
A bit further up the stairs already are Iommi-Tyr Magnusson, Ubchell Ap Ossian and Hisao of the Yellow Reeds (who just saved my life).
The mischievous little Gremlins are up even further -- with (presumably) no place left to run, awaiting their deaths by my hand.
Is this all correct?
Charmaine Da'vi |
as a standard action I cast CLW on the priest
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
as a move action I try and drag the father away from further danger with alphonse's help
Charmaine leans over the father and touches his for head
"lord please heal your most holy follower so that he may continue your work"
A wave of healing energy pulses from Charmaine's hand
"can you walk father? Let us help you to move out of danger"

Iommi-Tyr Magnusson will give time for his stronger allies to get in front of him, but will still move a bit closer and fire another Cold Iron Bolt from his Hand Crossbow at the nearest Gremlin he sees.
Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
(I am not adding a +1 for Point Blank because I doubt I'm within 30.')
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
