Outside:

Mihail rides by and almost casually skewers the stunned hobgoblin(B), his lance piercing through the hobgoblin's armor, chest, and vitals.

Twenty feet up, Kaid'an's shot misses the crouching form of the second hobgoblin(A), but Bagheera slinks around the rock, catching the hobgoblin off guard. He raises his arm to block the pair of powerful swipes, which scratch through his leather armor but appear to only cause flesh wounds. Both hit.

With his partner dead and a panther in his face, the remaining hobgoblin flees away from you, farther south. Double moves 60 feet away along the edge of the canal. Bagheera gets an attack of opportunity
The two in the canal can see him, but he has cover.

Andaris, Mihail, and Kaid'an may act.

Kaid'an:

Whoops, on Bagheera's last attack it should have only been one claw, because he had to move to reach the hobgoblin. You only get multiple attacks when you full attack, even if they are natural attacks.
Your attack of opportunity is only one attack, single claw or bite. Same on a charge.

Outside:

Bagheera pursues the fleeing hobgoblin, leaping and snapping at him with powerful jaws. Kaid'an's arrow embeds itself in the hobgoblin's shoulder, and Bagheera savages the unconscious form.
Hit on all three. Hobgoblin is lying on the ground dying. Combat is over

The crowd has gathered and the contest is starting, yet still Iluna sees no sign of Mihail, Kai'dan, or Andaris. For a moment she is concerned. But she figures they are more than capable of handling themselves in whatever adventure has befallen them.

Gonan steps forward into the crowd, carefully sizing up his marks, eager for the competition to be underway. Following his lead Iluna also joins those participating in the game of riddles. She doesn't anticipate winning, but there seems to be little else to do but watch, and this game at least seems to hold no penalties for failure, so what has she to loose?

However she quickly becomes lost. She is shorter than most and thus cannot see very well, so she gently edges her way to the front for a better vantage.

Combat map

Gonan:

While the crowd of contestants are quite varied, they all seem to be from the surrounding area. There is nobody who immediately strikes you as very academic, but a few elderly men and women catch your eye. From their interactions with the crowd, it seems they are well known in the town and have entered these kinds of contests before. They appear to be your true competitors, and their experience will be their greatest asset.

Inside:

Once all the competitors are assembled, you are instructed to sit on chairs set up in a large semi-circle. Some competitors wave to their friends and family, and sections of the crowd cheer. The herald calls for silence before he introduces the judge, who is the arbiter of what is a fair riddle, how much time should rightly be allowed to think, and which competitors must answer. He is a portly man with grey hair and a jolly nature. He waves to the crowd before taking a seat in front of the contestants. After a brief recap of the rules, he declares the contest underway and selects a contestant to give the first riddle.

The man selected has the look of a farmer about him, broad-shouldered and deeply tanned. He stands and clears his throat before giving his first riddle. ”A room I am, yet I have no door. No window, no ceiling, not even a floor.”

The judge points a finger a woman dressed in green. ”The answer is a mushroom,” she says after thinking a moment. The farmer nods and sits, and the judge gives his assent while the crowd titters appreciatively. The woman takes a deep breath, and begins her riddle. ”I have no eyes, but see all…”

The contest continues, with a handful of contestants eliminated from the competition. A white-haired man leaning on a walking stick answers his riddle correctly, to applause from the crowd. He proceeds to issue the following query: ”Two girls were born to the same mother, on the same day, at the same time, in the same month and year and yet they're not twins.
How can this be?”

The judge’s pointing finger finds Gonan.

Both Gonan and Iluna receive a +1 to checks to come up with a difficult riddle and checks to remember riddles because of their time spent preparing.

As the canal curves, a partially-collapsed ramshackle shelter comes into view, seemingly constructed from branches and sheets of canvas. The canvas has been shredded along the right side, and branches have been shattered, leaving the structure leaning 45 degrees over.
Inside, you find a number of bones and hobgoblin weaponry, all bent, broken, rusted, or crushed. From the damage, it looks like something large forced its way into the structure.

Iluna did not expect to face basic arithmetic in this contest of wits. Grasping at vague notions of time and relativity she ultimately despairs of finding an answer, until a thought occurs to her. The question is an illusion, the significance of distance thrown in to distract one from the simplicity of the relation: both men meet at the same place and time.

"Neither," she says, confidently, "The men meet at the same point on the road, and so neither is closer to Oppara than the other because they are both the same distance."

I actually didn't know the answer to that one before reading it. Good job. Got hung up for the same reason I gave for Iluna. Love how this role-playing works out.

A few voices in the crowd murmer their consent. Some gasp in astonishment. "The incredulity!" "What is she thinking?" But then the man smiles and concedes, taking his seat. His brow is furrowed and sweaty. That was not an easy riddle, and he did not think she would be able to answer. Sorry I REALLY do not know what category this is. Use your best judgement. Probably Logic or Obscure.

Answer:
Actually invented this one myself. Rather proud of it. "Halfway across the lake there was an island with a tree. The man stopped the boat at the island and went to sit in the shade, then climbed back into the boat, refreshed, having never touched the water."

Mihail and Kaid'an:

Andaris runs forward into the darkness, and you hear a *thud*. The creak of a door comes from the right of the thud, followed by a slam as it closes. Andaris:

The hobgoblin crumples under your blow, but keeps moving despite your strike at his vitals. Made save. His eyes do widen at your touch, as the visions of madness dance in his head. Iluna has to stop and think for a moment. The idea of skinning someone alive throws her off, before she remembers the question is just drawing on anthropomorphism as an illustration. Thinking carefully, she queries her past experiences for some clue. Then, unbidden, a tear rolls down her cheek as she has a particularity strong recollection of the scent of chopped onions.

"The answer," she sniffs, blinking back another tear, "is an onion." The crowd applauds her answer as the young man takes his seat. Then she thinks about a new riddle to pose.

Once more Iluna fumbles for an answer, the symbolism of the riddle eluding her grasp. Her vision swims, as she stumbles blindly about the landscape of her subconscious, searching desperately for a hint, for anything.

The judge is about to call it time, when a vision surfaces before her waking eyes. A woman, with skin as blue as sapphire, translucent like a glass of water, walks along the banks of a river. A bed floats down the river towards her. She gets on the bed and it floats away, making no ripples as it glides downstream. Iluna has the distinct impression of water lapping at her feet, and feels the bullrushes brush against her legs as she wades into the water towards this scene. The lady on the bed sails past her and says something in a crystal clear voice that sounds as if it were birthed form a bubbling spring, yet she does not know the language. How strange... what is this memory? I have no recollection of seeing this before... Just as she thinks this a wall of water - a seething, living wave - rushes down the river towards her. An instant before it crashes down upon her she closes her eyes and shouts out "A river!"

Opening her eyes again she realizes she is back in the tent. The judge's hand is raised, his mouth open. He was just about to say "Time's up!" when she blurted out her answer. Instead he asks the woman in green, "Is this correct?" She frowns and nods, and the crowd murmers - whether in consent or curiosity now is hard to say. "You are very lucky, young lady," says the judge with a wink, "now let us hear your riddle."

Iluna nods and thinks. This will need to be a good one if she hopes to eliminate the next opponent. (Of course it ISN't because these artificially simulated dice HATE me right now. I sure hope the other guys are having good combat rolls at least.) What comes out is a bit less than stellar, but will have to suffice. At least she has bought herself a moment's grace.

"All men I claim, yet none I own - the immortal bane of flesh and bone." Iluna blanks, realizing she just spoke without thinking. What was that? Out of what dark crevice did that passage slip? Perchance I am too consumed with this game of wits and rhymes that I have let slip a phrase of Ravidus' sermons. Then she hears Farlan's voice in her mind, soothing her. 'Guard thy tongue and thoughts with care, Child of Starlight, else thy mind be prone to wander and bring grief to those nearest to you.' Iluna recovers with conjured grace and finishes, "What am I?"

There. Threw you a bone. Have fun with that. ;)

Oh, right, and the answer is "death" by the way.

The contest is now down to the final two competitors. The judge puts the riddle-telling on hold for a moment as some men clear away all the chairs but two. These are placed opposite each other, so you will be facing the other competitor. Meanwhile, the judge asks your names and introduces you to the crowd. Iluna's opponent is a local by the name of Allan Edzar, a wealthy landlord. The crowd cheers as the judge announces the beginning of the final phase.

Roll me a charisma check as you're introduced to influence the crowd. A 12 or higher on the check will net you a +1 to all checks.

One slight change in procedure occurs as you take your seats. The judge says that to claim victory, you must correctly answer an additional riddle after your opponent fails to answer yours. With that, he commences the riddle duel.

Iluna is selected to give the first riddle.

Then she begins once more, citing a passage from one of Ravidus' most prized sermons. All brothers know the answer, but among those who are not one of their members, such knowledge is scarce.

"What cannot be heard by man's own ears, yet stalks his every footstep, a dreadful incarnation of his own image?"

Following the first hobgoblins, three more from each side step out, equipped like the first. They form tight ranks, and begin slowly advancing. Their large shields are held to form an overlapping wall of steel while they march. You can see long spears and bows on the backs of the rear pairs (B3, B4, C3, C4).

The hobgoblin on the ridge above looses a shot at Mihail, but it clatters harmlessly off his armour.

Kaid'an calls for Bagheera to protect Andaris, while loosing an arrow that sneaks between a pair of shields to impact against the arm of his target. The hobgoblin brushes the arrow aside with a grunt, but it appears to have caused a flesh wound. Hit, on C1. Andaris moves back from the hobgoblins and begins chanting to summon an ally from beyond, and Bagheera follows his master's orders and pads close to guard the aasimar.

Now that the panther is out of his way, Mihail orders Lanfarnesse into a charge. He sets his lance and aims for a gap in the wall of shields.
Charge Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 5 + 2 = 22 Damage: 2d8 + 6 ⇒ (3, 1) + 6 = 10

The group B of hobgoblins push closer, slashing at Lanfarnesse. Bagheera leaps forward as the one MIhail hit (B2) steps in, but another hobgoblin interposes his shield between the leaping cat and his intended victim.
Mihail Ride (Mounted Combat): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Mihail manages to guide his mount away from the flashing blades of the hobgoblins, and neither manage to land a solid blow. The hobgoblin in the rear (B3) sheathes his sword and pulls out a glass flask filled with liquid, while the last one in that group (B1) holds his position and remains ready.

The second phalanx situates themselves between the canal wall and the hut, preventing anyone from slipping past them. The two in the back sheath swords and draw longbows.
