Lol, nope.
Kaid'an hands Mihail his lance. "Any idea why the rules changed Sir? To keep it on time is my guess. Don't want joust keeping people from the stave tournament maybe. I just answered my own question. I will try not to do that in the future,"

Male Human Cavalier (Gendarme) 3 (HP: 23/31 | AC: 23 T:11 FF:22 | F: 5 R: 3 W: 5 | Init +1 Per +5)

Mihail grunts back at his squire, focused more on the joust than the question.

With a muttered payer to Pharasma, Mihail prods his trusty steed Lanfarnesse to barrel down the lists. Mihail flicks the tip of his lance forward like a viper, stabbing at the heart of his opponent's shield.

Well, that was quick. Starting off with a bang, indeed.

A horn sounds, and both knights gallop towards each other. Mihail's opponent focuses on his aim, but his steady approach leaves him open. Mihail deflects the lance with his shield as he makes solid contact with his own lance. The wooden shaft shivers, but holds as the noble is bodily lifted from his horse and deposited in the dirt.

The noble's squire runs over to help him to his feet as the heralds announce Mihail the winner. The crowd whoops and cheers, enjoying the rare sight of a noble lying on the ground.

Staff Tournament

Sorry, slight mistake in the rules listed before - the arena is 25 ft. in diameter, not 20 ft as previously stated. Starting positions are C2, with your opponents in C4 (see map). Note that the corners (A1, E1, A5, E5) are outside the ring.

After Mihail’s win at the lists, he and Kaid’an walk over to the staff tournament, where they meet up with Andaris.

The three of you advance through your first battles without incident - poorly-trained farmer lads are no match for your training.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Andaris’s second duel is against a lithe woman, a traveller by appearance. As they step into the ring, she gives a curt nod and steps into a stance that betrays her familiarity with combat.

Opponent Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Stepping forward, she begins with an exploratory prod that you easily bat away. Your turn. She is now in the center of the ring (C3).

Kaid’an finds himself facing a young yet powerfully-built farmer in the second round. Broad-shouldered and packed with muscle, his quarterstaff looks like a mere branch in his large hands.

Sir Eren:

"Ah, Sir Eren. Yes, I wanted to talk to you about more jobs like the one you found for me earlier. I've acquired a troupe of adventurers, you see, and I thought you might have another job for us."

Mihail adjusts his hat carefully.

"I must admit that I've missed the excitement. Bandits are so boring, you know."

Mihail grins widely.

"This tournament is surpassing my wildest expectations! Well done, I say!" Mihail gives Sir Eren a heart pat on the back, gesturing at his squire's fight in the arena below.

Staff Tournament:

Mihail attempts to trip the volunteer watchman.

Mihail

The watchman reads Mihail's sweep and steps back, retaliating with a horizontal swipe while Mihail is still leaning forwards. Mihail follows through and gets his staff in position to block. With a quick reversal, the watchman thrusts with the butt of his staff, catching Mihail in the unprotected chest. Miss on his attack of opportunity, but 8 points of non-lethal damage. "I certainly hope we don't need you to clear out another nest of hobgoblins any time soon," Sir Eren says with a wry grin before his face becomes serious. "The Baron does appreciate your service. From what we've pieced together, it seems that the hobgoblins were planning to raid the tournament stables. Hobs are bad enough without cavalry - but that's not the worst of it."

From the ring, a muted slap is followed by grunt. As a cheer goes up in the crowd around you, Sir Eren leans in and whispers, "We think they had contact with someone attending, who was going to help them get past the guards."

He straightens, eyes narrowed. "Tell no-one of this. You've proven trustworthy so far - I pray you will remain so."

Andaris's foe whirls her quarterstaff back around, faster than Andaris anticipates. The staff clocks him in the head, and likely would have caused grievous injury had the woman had been using lethal force.
Her blow causes Andaris's vision to go fuzzy, then all fades to black. That's a critical hit for 15 damage. Sorry, but I'm afraid that knocks you out.

Andaris wakes to see an Abadaran priest standing over him, who marks something on a piece of paper. "You'll want to rest for a moment before heading back out there," he says before walking away. She gives Iluna a wink, then turns back to Gonan.
"Thanks again for the fireworks spell. I probably should have stuck with something I had more experience with, but..." She shrugs. "Still managed to win a campfire bead. That will come in handy in my travels."

"To answer your question, that man over there is an illusionist. The older gentleman you bested in your first duel is an evoker - nice guy, goes by Lar." Anna indicates the wizards with a pointing finger. "The witch over there has a couple scrolls she's willing to give in exchange for spells - witches only have a familiar, you know, and they somehow manage to bind spells to it. Fascinating method of spellcasting, if you ask me. The rest you'll have to talk to yourself."
"I'd recommend starting with a greeting, by the way," she says with a smirk. "Something like, 'Hello, my name is Gonan. How are you?'"

Eventually the conversation turns to story-telling. People passing by catch snippets of strange and marvelous tales, each more outragous than the next...

"So then Rufus turns to Hadrian and blurts out: 'I swear Psychoanalyze Dweomer is a real spell!'..."

"Hearing all the commotion, my dear sister opens the door to find brother running screaming out of the bath-house chased by 'A fell Mer-hound from hell.' Turns out that it was my mother's familiar, Angjorn, playing a prank. He never did live that one down..."

"Hello again, you two!" Anna greets you with a smile as you sit. She looks at Iluna and gestures to Gonan with her head. "He did pretty good, didn't he? Not bad for someone who spent all their time cooped up writing letters for old guys."

She gives Iluna a wink, then turns back to Gonan.

She smiles absently at Anna but doesn't' return her comment. Her mind is off somewhere else; wandering through memory, pondering the portents of events to come. Much has happened in the past few days, not the least of which were the events from yesterday at the fair.

Iluna's thoughts:

Iluna pays only half attention to their conversation. Somehow her idle hands manage to retrieve her harp, but when she comes to the realization, she doesn't remember how or when. This fascinates her, yet in her memory-trance she only has the cognitive function available to turn it over and examine it from different angles, as if it were an artifact of untold properties, or some rare curiosity. As she turns it over her mind replays images of it from her own past. She remembers being lost in the woods as a small child, how somehow the only possession she had carried with her was the harp. She remembers stories around a campfire, and how she had played to the singing of many voices. She remembers the babbling of a brook, the whisper of a meadow, and the snorting of a fuzzy brown bear...

The recollection of Beor's image brings with it the voice of Farlan. The land of Taldor is vast, but those that Desna touches tend to gain some measure of luck. It may take time, but I am certain you will find the boy you seek...

Her mind wanders from there to the encounter with the thugs. I gotta warn you 'bout our boss... he's a dragon, big black one named Scarox... told us some lady lookin' fer a half-elf baby might know somethin' 'bout the 'Shards o' Darkness'...

What strange fate is this, that I have become mixed up in? This Scarox knows of the Shards and of the Brothers. More importantly he knows of Dzarra, and of me. Whatever destiny runs its course before me, it is both strange and treacherous. If that is how it will be, then I should take care that I cause no further harm than I have...

For a moment she returns to reality, though her mind remains detached, floating like a butterfly on a gentle breeze, looking down on the scene before her. She watches Gonan and Anna trade spells and words, smiles and well-wishes. Somehow this world seems foreign to her, as if the distance between subliminal thought and surroundings is somehow tangible. She feels cold, despite the bright sun and pleasant weather. She hugs her arms close to her chest. "If I cannot protect them from the coming darkness, then the least I can do is protect them from myself.” A pang of loneliness shoots through her, and an unbidden tear comes to her eye, but she quickly blinks it away. Today, the world is still at ease. Perhaps I can take some time to enjoy myself still...

”You haven't managed to bind a spell of the second order yet, have you?" Anna asks, not waiting for an answer. "I'm sure you must be close, though, given your obvious skill and talent. I can give you some pointers this evening, if you'd like. It might help speed up the process. That said, no promises." Anna smiles. "I've met wizards who spent most of their lives trying to master second-order spells. Granted, most of them were stuffy old men trying to impress farm folk, but the point stands."
Gonan wrote:
"Sure, I'd really appreciate some pointers from you! I'll come find you this evening, same place as last night?"

”Sounds good to me,” Anna nods. ”Here, why don’t you copy it over now. Trade for two first-order?”

Iluna comes back to the conversation after her moment of distraction. Something Anna said puzzles her. As she and Gonan trade notes she cautiously asks ”Do most people find it difficult to control magic, or, um, why would someone spend their whole life trying to learn just a few spells?

Gonan reaches into his pack, pulling out his spell book. Ferilli falls out and does a few circles around Gonan's ankles before settling. "Sure, I'll take that trade."

Iluna and Gonan

Anna exchanges spellbooks with Gonan, and begins studying his spells.

Iluna wrote:

Anna nods without looking up. "Magic does not come easily to everyone. Wizardry is using rituals and patterns to rip magic out of the world and shape it to your will - hardly a simple task. The mental fortitude required for such an effort is hardly common. Many take years to frame their mind in the manner required to bind spells at all! A powerful wizard is less gifted magically as they are mentally. If you lack the natural inclination, you can eventually strengthen your mind through practice, but that can take years. Decades, in some cases. A wizard's path is difficult, but once you understand the process, you can become incredibly versatile."

"Now sorcerers, like Vonn over there..." Still focused on the page, Anna points to the half-elf Gonan fought in his second duel, who is sitting alone, idly playing with the grass. "... they have magic flowing through their veins, imbued upon them through power in their bloodlines. You often see them pass their power to their children, since it is the blood that holds the power. Their magic is about controlling that power, not creating it like ours. A mighty sorcerer is one who can call forth more of his power without being overwhelmed, and can shape it as he pleases. Some look down upon sorcerers for their lack of study, but in my mind they are lucky - they do not need complex ritual and mental preparation to power spells, but are able to do so from young ages. Control is all they lack, and between you and I, I believe that is easier to teach."

Anna pauses and looks up from the page she was studying. "Do you have magical talent, Iluna? You know something of it, that much is clear from the assistance you gave Gonan last night."

Kaid'an

The farmer drops a shoulder and rushes at Kaid'an, knocking him back nearly to the edge of the ring. You've been bull-rushed to C5, right at the edge of the ring. Getting knocked out will eliminate you.

Mihail

Ducking quickly, the other man narrowly avoids having the staff connect with his face. Hit. He jabs at Mihail's stomach, an easy-to-defend strike that opens Mihail for the reverse strike that follows. Take 5 non-lethal damage.

Andaris

For a split second the woman narrows her eyes, but quickly relaxes. "Elinore. Of nowhere." She suddenly becomes very interested in the grass beneath her feet. "Not anymore," she breathes, so softly you barely catch it.

Andaris freezes, shocked, 'Elinore, I have heard such a name today... of nowhere? Such sadness and loss. Perhaps it is she who lost the pendant?'

Hesitantly Andaris pleads, "Wait, Elinore, please. I have found... there is something... fortune has played a cruel joke on us it seems. Can we speak somewhere privately - it is important. I am fine to leave this healer's place, let us walk to my tent."

Mihail

Mihail expected his blow to collide with his foe's shoulder... but the man misjudges the attack, and his attempt to parry only results in redirecting the blow to his head. Mihail's opponent collapses, unconscious from the strike. Hit, and winner by KO!
