Petra identifies the scrolls (a scroll of detect secret doors and a scroll of remove paralysis) while Mirri works on the lock, ultimately opening it with a "click".

When the panel slides up, an innocuous-looking scroll in the secret passage abruptly rises in the air, unraveling as it flies. It flits about with serpentine grace, baring its razor-sharp edges.

Knowledge Arcana DC 13:
This is a Guardian Scroll, an animated construct created for the purpose of guardian libraries and sacred texts. It is resistant to damage from nonmagical weapons (DR 5), as well as immune to bludgeoning, crushing, and falling damage.

Arcana DC 18:
The scroll is intelligent and is, therefore, subject to mind-affecting effects. It is also vulnerable to fire.

Arcana DC 22:
The scroll slashes its victims with its razor-sharp edges, then attempts to strangle them by wrapping around their head.

Like Petra, Mirri simply stared at the animating scroll, utterly non-plussed by the occurrence. As she stood there, Say'ri and Akhentepi took charge of the fight. Unlike her companions, the halfling remained too dumfounded to act.

Pass this round. More of an RP thing...this is just to weird for Mirri ATM. Tactically, Mirri doesn't have access to attack the foe without getting around it, risking other things in the passage as-of-yet unknown pouncing on her.

So, the red and blue tokens were the destroyed undead corpses that you found. I forgot to update the positions on the map by the panel, so I'm fixing that in case it affects Mirri's turn. There, it should look like that.

Akhentepi's talons barely scratch the magically-warded construct (1 damage) and it lunges for Say'ri's face, slashing at her and trying to wrap around her head. The edge is razor sharp, opening a vein in Say'ri's shoulder before the scroll hovers near the ceiling.

The moment in which the "killer scroll" (as Mirri would later refer to it) slashed a serious wound into Say'ri awoke the halfling from her puzzled inaction. Not just a bizarre oddity, the animated item was a serious threat. As the scroll shot up, Mirri slid past Ibrahim to a position next to Say'ri and the General. Her knife in one hand, the halfling watched the scroll warily, waiting to lash out with her weapon when the animated object drew within range.

Forgetting her disease for a moment in the midst of Petra's praise, Mirri offered a wink and a smile to the dwarven woman before eying the killer scroll. The halfling ascertained that the scroll would likely swoop to attack, with the General knocked out. It'll prolly go at Say'ri...everything likes to hit Say'ri Therefore she pivoted her self on the other side of the human woman, in hopes of securing a flanking position when/if the foe came into range.

Combat Over

I assume you'll see to Akhentepi, but in the interest of brevity, here's what is in the hidden compartment.

In the hidden compartment is:

Scroll tube (Spellcraft DC 18)):

a scroll of align weapon

Scroll tube (Spellcraft DC 18)):

a scroll of knock

Scroll tube (Spellcraft DC20):

a scroll of halt undead

Wand (Spellcraft DC 18)):

a wand of lesser restoration (10 charges)

A tablet (Spellcraft DC 18):

Tablet of Languages Lost
Fashioned from granite, this stone tablet is approximately 2 feet long, 1 foot wide, and just over an inch thick. Dating to the period of the Keleshite Interregnum in Osirion over 2,000 years ago, the tablet was once part of a larger stone stele that was publicly displayed for all to see. Now known as the tablet of languages lost, the broken slab is inscribed with a vow of fealty to the Padishah Emperor of Kelesh in three different languages: Ancient Osiriani, Kelish, and contemporary Osiriani. The characters and hieroglyphs of the three languages correspond to one another and serve as a translation key between the languages.

Once per day, upon speaking the command word, the owner of the tablet can read and understand any written texts as if using comprehend languages for a period of 30 minutes.

This does not allow the owner to speak or write unknown languages, or read magical writings (though the tablet reveals that such texts are magical). In addition, if the tablet is readily available and at hand, the owner gains a +3 competence bonus on all Linguistics checks. Finally, if the owner knows at least one of the three languages inscribed on the tablet, he can attempt Linguistics checks to translate the other two languages even if untrained in the Linguistics skill. Possession of the tablet of languages lost serves as an acceptable rationale for the owner to learn one of the three languages inscribed upon it (by putting a rank in Linguistics during character advancement) without the need of a teacher or library.

Although the tablet of languages lost was created to ease the transition of native Osirians from pharaonic rule to that of a foreign monarch, other tablets could exist bearing different messages in other languages.

Along with these items is a second stone tablet written in Ancient Osiriani hieroglyphs. If read or deciphered, it is revealed to be a royal decree of Pharaoh Djederet II (see the Player Handout).

DC 20 Knowledge (nobility):

Djederet II was pharaoh of Osirion sometime around –1600 ar, over 6,000 years ago.

DC 20 Knowledge (history):

The city mentioned in the tablet is Wati, and you know that Djederet II founded the city.

Detect Magic on the tablet reveals an invisible symbol in the upper right hand corner—an eye bisected by a vertical line.

DC 20 Knowledge (religion):

This mark has long been used by Osirian priests of Nethys to invoke the god’s blessing and denote important documents.

No references to the tablet or the symbol can be found among the surviving documents in the library. The tablet is worth 300 gp to a private collector or historian.

She has no idea of the wand either, but the tablet briefly makes her scarred face light up with interest. "Ahh... interesting. Look, three inscriptions here in three tongues: magic woven in to help the reader understand the old tongue and the new one, as well as the tongue called Kelish. Useful."

(Anyone can read the tablet spoiler for a more full description)

Petra also reads the old Osiriani decree aloud, with a stern look. When she finishes, she snorts. "A poor pharaoh of men, to seek to hide a scandal. Dishonorable. I feel no guilt for uncovering these items, if dishonesty caused them to be hid in the first place."

She returns to healing the poor bird. Average on two more charges will get the general back to full. 3 more charges for Say'ri. We're gonna need a new wand soon, haha.

I think you still need detect magic to identify magic items, whether or not you're trained in Spellcraft. :-\ Without it, spellcraft is basically only useful to ID spells cast that you can observe. Happy to use Spellcraft to aid if I'm wrong, though

Yep, you can only ID items with spellcraft + detect magic. Ibrahim, the wand is lesser restoration, not remove curse. The curse gave Mirri a penalty, not ability damage. The tablet is posted as a handout up top. It's called "royal decree".

Lesser restoration: dispels any magical effects reducing one of the subject's ability scores or cures 1d4 points of temporary ability damage to one of the subject's ability scores. It also eliminates any fatigue suffered by the character, and improves an exhausted condition to fatigued. It does not restore permanent ability drain.

Bestow Curse: You place a curse on the subject. Choose one of the following:
-6 decrease to an ability score (minimum 1)

Is bestow curse a magical effect reducing Mirri's Charisma? Or is a decrease to an ability score different than a reduction? Dunno, but since it specifically says that in addition to mentioning curing ability damage, it seems legit.

Mirri's expression looks as bright and hopeful as it had since the group first dealt with the Div. The halfling looked up hopefully at Petra, eyes pleading. Oh please oh please oh please! I gotta get rid o' this or I can never go back home. Please please please!

Anything aside from the discussion of the wand and what it could do seemed utterly lost on the halfling.

So, what's the plan?

Say'ri looks over to Petra, who seems to still be engrossed in studying the items they've found.

"I feel as though we should continue on, but Akhentepi and I have both taken a beating already. If we are to continue we'll need to eat through a few more wand charges before we're fit for combat. If we can lift this curse from Mirri then we'd best do that too."

Say'ri is proposing we heal up with wands and then carry on - unless people want to keep the wand charges in which case we'll have to leave and come back tomorrow.

I'm sorry, guys, I meant to post last night and then fell asleep in my chair.

Petra looks over the items with interest, then nods at Mirri. "Of course, little one. We will plaster up those cracks. Hold still..."

I was also unaware of this less common use for LR! So if it 'dispels the effect' responsible, would we need a single charge to fix Mirri or enough to get rid of the whole ability penalty? I'll roll the latter in case, and track depending on which it turns out to be. I also already healed Say'ri and Akhentepi to full with average wand charge values here. Well, I abstracted it. ;) I've already marked off those charges though. I don't think anyone else was hurt?

As soon as she has done what she can for Mirri's affliction, Petra tucks wands carefully back into their wrist sheaths-- for the curing wand-- and the other into her pack, and helps bundle up the three useful scrolls, the tablet, et al.

"I am ready to continue if you all are. Mirri, do you feel well enough?"

Mirri's eyes went wide as Petra placed the restorative magicks on her. Ooh...that feels...weird...but good! The halfling watch her arms with a growing smile as the restorations took away all evidence of the Div's curse. After the last application was done, and no evidence of her affliction remained, Mirri launched into a full hug of the dwarven woman. Thank you thank you thank you! I can go home now! Practically bouncing off the walls with joy, the group had to wait a few moments for Mirri to calm down. Ok, ok, I'm...whew...I'm ok now. Looking around at the others with her full vigor back she adds, so what are we waiting for, let's go! As soon as Say'ri began moving forward through the uncharted area past the killer scroll, Mirri fell in immediately behind the warrior, keeping an eye out for traps as usual.

Let's keep going. By the looks of that decree and who wrote it, there is something very old and very powerful locked up in here.

My reading was that the curse was a single effect that was reducing her Cha, so I'm pretty sure you only need to use one charge.

The door is locked, but it is a relatively easy task for Mirri to pick the lock. As she works on the mechanism she notices scratches around the lock that would indicate someone else recently picked it.

Proceeding west of the library...
This sparsely furnished room contains a bed frame bolted to the floor in the southwest corner next to a lacquered end table.

On the opposite side of the room, a wooden desk has partially collapsed against the wall. Doors exit the room to the north, east, and south.

Finding nothing of note here, Mirri finds a similarly tampered-with lock on the northern door, and picks it as well.

Continuing through the seemingly-innocuous corridor to the north, Mirri shouts a warning that stops Say'ri in her tracks: there is a hidden blade in the western wall. Mirri also notes a hidden mechanism that appears to lock the blade into place when activated.

There is a weird, mystical sensation as all of you experience a strange phenomenon simultaneously--there is something in your boot! How did it get there?

You may all choose an item worth up to 50 gp that you find in your boot. Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas!

With a stunned expression, Mirri pulls a 10' pole out of her boot and...ok no, jk, will think of something later...thanks GM!

Moving ahead sans disease seemed to refocus Mirri on her principle task: finding and dealing with devices imperiling the group as they explored. Hmm...somebody's been here, she said absently and to no one in particular. Not sure why they locked it again. Searching the room beyond, the halfling didn't seem to find anything of interest, but made sure the party was aware of the 2nd re-locked door after picking it.

Aw, now that's not friendly, Mirri said after bringing Say'ri to a stop just before the hidden blade in the wall would have harmed the human woman. Lemme take a look at that... Carefully approaching the trap, Mirri delicately attempted to render it harmless.

Mirri activates the hidden lock, confident that the blade will remain in place.

Her confidence is affirmed when Say'ri steps first into the corridor and the trap doesn't fire.

Continuing on...

This octagonal chamber is empty save for a large metal chest against the eastern wall. A series of hieroglyphs are inscribed on the wall above it. Stone doors are set in both the northern and southern walls.

The chest is unlocked, untrapped, and empty.

The Ancient Osiriani hieroglyphs on the eastern wall read, “The righteous and the holy have no need of staff, rod, or ring. Place your faith in the Good Magister and walk without fear.”

Petra understands enough about Church Politics to know that the “Good Magister” refers to the Sanctum’s high priest and refers to that person’s control of magic, not his righteousness.

Just waiting for reactions or anything else you'd like to do before proceeding.

It's the Loot of Christmas Future! or... something...

Petra clears her throat and waves away the small thief's exuberant thanks, uncomfortable with all the physical display of gratitude. When Mirri has let go, she surreptitiously checks her pockets to make sure nothing went missing-- and is instead mildly surprised, and chastened, to discover a vial instead. The dwarf studies it a moment before reading the old label. Tincture of Blessed Weapon. Huhm.

Clearing her throat, she hurries after the others, squinting at the hieroglyphics and translating them for the others.

"Hmmm... the Good Magister is a title more of magical power, not piety," she grumbles. "Some test, this? We must place the items described here?"

"Or what comes beyond is meant to be a test of faith - to be faced without weapons or protections." Say'ri replies. "There hasn't been a 'good magister' for centuries though - so I think I'd rather trust in my steel than in the puissance of a man who no longer lives. I say north door, unless anyone has seen something I missed?" She looks to Mirri at this point, well aware of just how many body parts she would be missing if not for the halfling's sharp eyes.

Mirri continued to search around the room as the party entered, a clearly disappointed look on her now un-hooded face as she discovered the chest to be empty. She then began a review of the two stone doors, letting the conversation between Petra and Say'ri regarding the magister go completely past her. The halfling looked up at Say'ri with a puzzled look after the woman asked about any dangers she might have missed. Huh, oh, nope, it's safe. She then lined up behind Say'ri to let her proceed through the door.

Searched the room, otherwise ready to roll on

Mirri spots some tracks and the group investigates further. There is a single set of bloody boot prints going south and also the tracks of multiple people heading north through this area.

Descending the stairs...

A stone bench sits against the eastern wall of this octagonal chamber. Black tiles line the floor, walls, and ceiling. A short passage to the south ends at a gate of bronze bars. The gate is closed and locked.

Beyond it you see a statue of Nethys, made of rune-carved clay.

Make a Knowledge (Arcana) check if you are trained in it.
