Very awesome! Go Petra!

Say'ri takes a short moment to mentally applaud the perfection of Petra's shot before hurrying over to the nearest body. We need to get out of here quickly! Search the bodies, take what we can and if we can take any of the adventurers for burial do it. Then for the love of Horus we need to get out of here!

I say we search the bodies, take the 'friendly' ones for a proper burial and scarper!

Petra stands still for several long seconds after Thurzen falls, still ready to loose arrows at the spot in the air where he had hung. Only slowly does her bow track downward to the still form. She blinks, several times, and then walks forward, stiffly, to the dead half-orc.

She should feel something, she thinks. The cessation of her journey, she should... Petra takes a deep, shuddery breath.

"We should leave," she says simply to the others. "Before more come. And... the one who fell--" she gestures at the other man, the one who fell the ghouls as his comrades fled-- "his body should be taken and consecrated, so his soul can rest and the body does not rise. It would not be right, for us to swell their ranks."

She herself reaches under Thurzen's corpse, shouldering it and staggering under the weight. "I... also do not... wish to dead... to feed more, because of us."

Quickly determining carrying isn't going to work, Petra reluctantly winds up dragging him, most likely.

The going back is warm work in the still desert night air, laden down as they are-- Petra grabs at her keffiyeh and pulls it down to let the night air move freely over her skin, even the badly burnt side of her face and skull.

There is no shame in scars when their getting has been avenged.

Hurrah! If it wouldn't slow us down too much Petra really would like to move both the bodies out of ghoul street, as she doesn't want even Thurzen's corpse to be desecrated by ghoul-noms. And she would certainly want to take any steps that might be needed to stop ghoul-raising-- buying scrolls of sanctify corpse and casting them, etc, if necessary, or conducting funeral rites.

Well, the perfumery is currently on fire... ;-)

...That'll do!

Petra realizes that hauling the bodies back is a long, long slog, and will make them targets for any ghouls in the area no doubt. However, the blazing building...

"Let us see if there are things the living may use on their bodies, and then consign them to the flames. It is not the best grave-keeping, but it is better than ghouls," she says grimly.

"Also-- one of Thurzen's men was still in there. I would at least look to see if he lives." (Which she'll do first, just in case!)

Keffiyeh retucked around her face for the sake of the smoke and fumes, Petra hurriedly glances in the door of the perfumery, ducking low to avoid the dark smoke billowing forth and scanning the floor for any unmoving bodies.

(If she sees none:)

Petra looks over Thurzen's red robed body for anything of value, with a brief prayer to reveals magic, and then drags him into the burning building. "Let your flames purge the memory of you from the world," she says grimly to the corpse as she manhandles him into the blaze.

Catching Mirri up a bit.....

Having darted into the shadows underneath the ruined building, Mirri had loaded her sling and launched herself back into the light, ready to once again hammer a stone into Thurzen's head. But she stopped mid-motion, and landing like a cat watched with a grin as the half-orc's body drifted down under the life-stopping weight of Petra's last arrow. Glancing over at the dwarf, she looked at peace, at least as much as one could look after being badly burned. Mirri took a moment to survey the area to ensure that no other enemies were around before letting her shoulders relax. Well how 'bout that! Looked bad for us for a bit there but it worked out. Now, let's see who has what!

Unable to help much at all with the moving of bodies, Mirri hurriedly checked all the fallen corpses for valuables. She nodded in unspoken agreement to the suggestion that they leave this ghoul-infested area as soon as possible. The halfling kept watch and said nothing as Thurzen's body was offered up to the Perfumery inferno, and then rapidly moved to return to town with the others.

Close call but a great combat! Do we bid adieu to Ishia at this point? Maybe the narrow escape of the combat was more than she bargained for in an adventuring life?

Gamer Please read the announcements!

Petra darts into the perfumery and sees the old, scholarly man lying on his side. When she reaches him and rolls him over, she can see the half of him facing the flames is charred, while the other half is scored with deep claw marks, likely from the ghouls. He is clearly dead. The dwarf is able to recover his backpack.

backpack contents:

potions of cure light wounds (2), potion of shield of faith,
scrolls of comprehend languages (2), scroll of endure elements, scroll
of enlarge person, scroll of grease, scroll of mount, scrolls of shield (2), smokesticks (2) antitoxin, spellbook (6 first level spells), sunrods (5), 40 gp

Meanwhile, Mirri searches the other bodies quickly. The ghouls are clothed only in tatters, with no possessions, the one among them outfitted with gear already having escaped.

The swordsmen who was killed by the ghouls doesn't have much aside from his weapons and armor. Combat Gear potion of cure light wounds, potion of remove fear, alchemist’s fire; breastplate, greatsword, heavy
flail, sling with 10 bullets, 5 gp

Thurzen is well-armed and outfitted, and holds a devestating weapon that he couldn't bring to bear before being felled by Petra.

Thurzen's stuff: potion of cure moderate wounds, potion of invisibility, scrolls of levitate (2), scroll of fireball (was about to drop this on y'all!), scroll of silent image, wand of infernal healing (20 charges), smokestick; masterwork heavy crossbow with 10 bolts, masterwork falchion cloak of resistance +1, 190 gp

Ishia promises to help identify all of the scrolls and potions, but she is visibly shaken by the number of ghouls that approached in such a rapid response to the flames.

We...we should leave. Ghouls live in packs. There will be many, many more here soon.

Don't forget to include Ishia in the final loot distribution here before she leaves, as I accounted for 5 players in the loot amount.

With a quick prayer to Anubis-- surely the Guardian understands the need for a bit of a rush-- Petra consigns the poor old man to the flames and grabs the backpack hurriedly.

They make their way back to less infested regions of the city with relief-- Petra cannot help but stare around her as she walks, feeling the air on her newly bared face. It seems a different city. It's a little tricky for a dwarf to walk with a bounce in her step but Petra manages it somehow.

Seeing the injuries still extant on the others, she sobers back up.

"Say'ri's husband should look at your wounds," she says to Ibrahim and Mirri. "It is probable the bites and claws will be infected again. Ghouls are the foulest creatures."

She walks a few more steps in silence, then clears her throat. "I have searched Thurzen the better part of a year now. I did not expect... when I left my home, I did not think to find... companions such as yourselves. My vengeance is concluded: but I shall travel with you as long as I am needed. It is good, to... know that one does not walk, alone, when fighting the undead."

Rather embarrassed by her own terribly sentimental speech (by her standards), Petra clears her throat and remains silent the rest of the way back to Say'ri's home. She offers her assistance in the treating of injuries, as well as the reading of scrolls and the carrying of things to the marketplace vendors-- she feels no illness herself.

"We have more locations given to us in this lotto, yes?" she asks the others over a shared meal.

(I assume we get back to home base and sleeping on your couch, Say'ri, do selling, and tackle more tombs!! who's with me? :D :D Though there's ghoul fever to deal with I believe)

"I'm glad you have been able to find some measure of peace. That foul creature deserved worse than the quick death he was given. Let's head back. If I never see another ghoul it will be too soon."

Note: I "unclaimed" the spellbook with Ibrahim. He's an eldritch scion magus which casts spontaneously, so no need for a spell book. Might be able to grab a few bucks for it though.

Say'ri claps Petra on the back after her speech but doesn't comment. Taking a hefty chunk of the loot under one arm and supporting Mirri with the other, she leads the way back to her home. Settling everyone down and firmly telling Ibrahim and Mirri to 'stay put or I'll tell Ben that you didn't' she sits down with Petra and Ishia to inventory and categorise all the items they collected.

Both Mirri and Ibrahim are eventually allowed up to help with dinner preparations so that Ben comes home to dinner for the second day running! "You're right Petra, we have one more tomb to do I think. We need to make our report on the House of Pentheru officially then we'll get the next target. We can take a day or so over this if we want to, sell off what we can at the best prices and then go in fully prepared. What do you think Ben?" Say'ri turns to her husband. "Will these two miscreants be fit for duty tomorrow or not?"

Spellbook noted. I'll chalk it over to Ishia, since she'd be keen on it if she was still here. I think we should hold onto the yellow items because of the price glut and that will cost us all around 180gp for now, but unless people disagree, its not the end of the world.

If Ibrahim and Mirri are fine Say'ri will report to the Grand Mausoleum in the morning to do reports and get going that day, if not then take a day or two to sell items then go and report.

I just re-read the posts since we rested last time and I'm not seeing where Mirri is diseased, or even injured. Did I miss something? She did take 6hp from a festrog (but no save needed), but was healed right afterward with a CLW wand hit.

Upon leaving the Necropolis, Mirri skipped along with the group, as upbeat has any but perhaps Say'ri had ever seen her. The halfling beamed at Petra's comments. That's great! We're doin' good together and look at all this stuff we got! Way better than anything with my brother. Nope, we should all stick together! A contented look crossed Mirri's face as she spoke, little insight was needed to realize she had likely had few reliable companions in her life.

No worries, just didn't want to have Mirri skipping around and cheering if she's at 4hp's and diseased!

Moving ahead with the plot....

With Ibrahim safely ensconced in bed receiving recuperative care from Ben-Ali and Petra off at her Temple, Mirri accompanied Say'ri on rounds to the various merchants to sell off unwanted valuables. As was her wont, the halfling kept to the sides of the streets where the protective cover of store awnings and tent overhangs kept the glaring sun off of her. At times it almost seemed as if the shadows pulled at her as she walked.

Mirri whistled happily as she moved, breaking into pirouetting dance steps often. As she did so a look of curiosity came over her, and the halfling drew her small knife. Blending her dance steps into the slashing motion of a dagger-strike, she practiced several swings before nodding in satisfaction. Ya know, my brother said I should jus' try to stab with this thing real hard but I think it's better when I let it jus' slide like this. We seem to get into lots of fights, so I better get used to it! Despite the grim topic, Mirri's demeanor remained cheerful as she continued to periodically practice the dance-combat forms she worked out in her head.

Assuming nothing of import happens otherwise as Mirri and Say'ri sell off items, and the two return to the house.

Back at Say'ri's home, Mirri flashed a wide smile at Ben-Ali while pointing at Say'ri. See, she's all in one piece. Told ya I'd keep her safe! So....what's for dinner?

Ben Ali frowns, then gestures to some olives and bread set out with wine.

The end doesn't justify the means, Mirri. You lot know better than to go looking for trouble in the Necropolis at night. I know ghoul fever when I see it, he says, coolly.

You have a right to explore the unearthed sites, but don't make the mistake of thinking a few successful forays into the Dead City makes you immune to its dangers at night.

He pours some wine for you all and his expression softens, clearly relieved that you are all (mostly) ok. Ibrahim was having bad dreams, and the bed was covered in rime when I went to check on him. Magical, no doubt, but it doesn't seem to have harmed him, and his condition is improving. Oh, and Ishia left you this.

Note:

It's only a matter of time before I join the ranks of the dead if I continue to go into the Necropolis. I'll take what I've earned and be on my way, and apply my skills where the dead fear to roam freely.

Safe Travels,
Ishia

Petra seems quiet and subdued-- but at peace. She even smiles a time or two at Ben Ali as she helps him tend to Ibrahim's fevers.

She frowns somewhat as she reads Ishia's note, then hands it to the others. "I am sorry to lose her, but the dead are a true threat. Perhaps she is prudent."

Petra looks solemn for a moment, then spreads her hands. "I, however, will remain. When Ibrahim is able to continue, we should finish our work. I must go to the market first I think."

Mirri smiled back at Ben Ali, the grin of a soul used to admonishments of this sort. Aw, it all worked out fine. 'Sides, you're good at fixin' people up so I know Ibrahim's gonna be OK. OOOH, what's this! Mirri had spoken while walking over to the table, and was almost instantly distracted by the sight of a fresh cheese accompanying the olives and bread set out. Food then took in all of the halfling's focus for a bit, making her oblivious to any retorts from the man.

Mirri did look up however a moment later, a piece of bread in her mouth, as Petra read the note. Ishia's quit'n?? The words were a barely audible garble, and she waited to say more until she swallowed. Huh, guess that mean's it's jus' the four of us. I'm stayin', and Say'ri likes this kind o' stuff. With a smile she added, an' I think Ibrahim wants to keep hangin' around a bunch o' women! The halfling started to laugh, but noticed Ben Ali's glare. In a softer tone that weakened as she went on, Mirri said with a red face. Well, that is, once he, ya know, get's over that ghoul fever and all.... Sheepishly, she went back to a focus on the plate of food in front of her.

Say'ri reaches over and firmly tousles Mirri's hair as the halfling scoffs her way through an unnatural proportion of the cheese. Her glance at her husband is apologetic, she's been on the receiving end of his lectures before and knows that he is not only right, but has her best interests at heart.

"I can understand Ishia's reluctance. We have all come close to death recently and it takes its toll. Not everyone has the experience or the boundless enthusiasm needed." "There you go both of you, that's your share of the most recent profits. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go and argue with my husband about how much he needs to run the temple." Upon finishing your purchases, you make your way to the Grand Mausoleum to report the findings of your second site and receive your third assignment. The acolyte hands you a name and a map, and waits patiently for you to leave.

The place is called the Sanctum of the Erudite Eye, and old temple to Nethys. You recall one of the other groups at the Tooth and Hookah inquiring about that very temple a few days ago.

Let me know if you want to make any other purchases or anything after this knowledge. Once you proceed...

The building is easy enough to find with the map provided by the temple.

No doors block the grand entrance to this building—a wide flight of steps leads directly up into the temple’s interior. Two humanoid statues flank the stairs, wearing black-and-white masks and holding quarterstaves.

Petra can plainly see that the statues are of Nethys, god of Magic.

Quick tweak on future marching orders: when we're coming into an unexplored space for the first time and we're not in single-file, Mirri will stand behind Ibrahim

Just as Mirri started to scan the room for traps and other items of interest, the skeletal dog-like creatures jumped to attack. The halfling's quick reflexes allowed her to jump into action before most others moved. Noting the shadows and blocked view provided by the pillars, Mirri darted to her left, vaulting over Say'ri's shield as the human woman blocked the skeleton in front of her. When she reached the side of the room she flattened up against the pillar and waited for her chance to strike from behind.

Say'ri grunts in pain as one of the dogs takes a large bite out of her calf, causing her leg to buckle. She manages to use the motion however, cleaving her khopesh down into its skull with such force that the entire skeleton disintegrates.

Beside her Akhentepi leaps from her shoulder, wing span momentarily blotting out the light from Say'ri's shield. The form of her familiar is suddenly huge as he strikes down at the jackals with a fearsome pent up fury. His curved talons however, intended to tear flesh, have little effect on the fleshless forms of the skeletons.

Gamer Please read the announcements!

Say'ri, just for future reference--are the talons slashing and piercing? Petra already killed Yellow (they have 4 HP, stats above), so I put Say'ri's attack on red. Since that one is dead, I'll have Akhentepi attack green. Sound good?

Also, I think Akhentepi's stats might be off. If he deals 1d4 damage when tiny, wouldn't he deal 1d8 damage when medium (instead of 1d6)? Also, he gains +2 strength that stacks with his size adjustment increases, so I think he would go from 7 (tiny) to 13 (medium). Incidentally, this would give him free Power Attack under our houserules. It looks like you may have been calculating it as just moving from small to medium. Let me know if I'm missing something. I believe this would also mean that his 17 AC (tiny) would go to 15 AC (small). Right?

Petra's blunted arrow sails through the air, shattering the skull of the nearby skeleton. Ibrahim whirls, slicing the legs off another dog as Say'ri crushes one into powder.

Akhentepi's new monstrous form takes flight, his claws slashing through one of the jackal's ribcage to no effect.

Two of the undead strike at the General, their fangs bouncing off his magically-enhanced hide.

The last jackal rushes Ibrahim, the speed of its charge carrying it past his shield to graze his outstretched arm. 2 damage

Hidden in the shadows, no one show Mirri's mouth hand open as Say'ri's familiar increased in size and became a formidable combatant of his own. Her surprise changed to resolve as two of the skeletons turned to assault the bird, launching Mirri into action. Mirri took a brief moment to smile at her handiwork, clearly appreciating her growing skill with her small blade. She then looked up at Say'ri with an impressed expression. "Could you always do that?" Say'ri whispers as her ancestor returns to her shoulder, thankfully in his normal size. "It appears that the Gods have granted me my old strength once more." Akhentepi replies, seeming a little too excited by the prospect - the glint in the falcon's eye is actually unnerving, even for a battle-hardened woman like Say'ri.

Bearing Akhentepi with her Say'ri makes her own circuit of the room. "We seem to have at least two choices. I'd say we examine this central chamber first, then head east. It served us well in the last tomb."

Say'ri just picked east cause thats where the sun comes from - either way works. Im waiting for a little more DM info before making a firm decision.

After a quick search Mirri finds humanoid footprints in the dust. The tracks are fresh, less than 24 hours old, and it appears that at least
four creatures passed this way.

The path to the East turns sharply North--you'll have to walk down that hallway to discern more.

To the west you see a series of cubicles encircling an open central space here, each separated from the common area by a curtain hanging from a rod over the doorway.

To the North: Space and elevation lend a sense of past grandeur and majesty to this large space. A large, star-shaped fountain with a circular pool in the center sits in the middle of the chamber. The bottom of the pool is decorated with a great mosaic eye made from tiny colored tiles, and hieroglyphs are carved into the paving stones ringing the fountain. Two rows of columns support the ceiling overhead, which continues to rise to a domed ceiling in the northern portion of the chamber. At the far end of the hall, a massive statue with arms raised overlooks the entire length of the temple from atop a raised
dais.

Mirri, you can just tell that multiple people passed through here recently, but there are no discernible tracks leading in any certain direction that you can see.

The pool has a faint aura of abjuration and transmutation. As Petra approaches the fountain, she, in fact, does recognize the statue. It is a massive statue of Nethys, god of Magic.

This was a temple to Nethys, years long past, Akhentepi says, confirming Petra's information.

North of the fountain, the ceiling rises to a high dome 40 feet above the main floor. Three flights of short, steep steps climb up to a large platform elevated 5 feet above the floor.

At the rear of this platform, a 15-foot-tall statue of Nethys, half white and half black, stands atop a raised octagonal dais. The top of the main platform is tiled in black marble, while the octagonal dais is a striking white, and the ring that separates them is tiled in red.

The statue is incredibly well sculpted, and unusual in that it appears
to have been fabricated from two differently colored types of stone fused together with magic to create one solid statue. The steps leading up to the platform are quite steep and are considered difficult terrain.

Mirri appeared utterly unconcerned with the origins of the building or what happenings might have occurred. 'Kay, some god or such then, she said in response to Say'ri, only matters if they left some good stuff behind!

As the group's eyes focused on the statue and fountain to the north, Mirri took it as a sign the group wished to explore that way further. @Group: would we want Mirri to scout ahead into new areas in Stealth? She's rather good at it, and with Trap Sense she's a low risk to blunder into one.
