Hearing Petra scream, Mirri knew something was seriously wrong. The halfling went on instinct, zipping up to the entrance to the northern room before ducking into the shadows as she crossed the threshold. Once across the area, she peaked at her new opponents to plan her attack.

Petra stands still-- frozen-- her mind locked in a memory...

Flashback (graphic violence warning):
Every detail is ingrained in the dwarven woman's mind. The shame of having been handily bested by the tomb robbers-- the weapons of her office taken from her, her belongings rifled through for anything they could sell, the vultures-- the onyx-and-jet amulet of Anubis her father had made, snapped off its chain and stuffed into a pouch... the low laughter...

The way the flagstones of Erekrus had pressed against her cheek, grit and stone grinding in. One of them had been holding her head down. She remembers the pressure of a heavy blade at the back of her neck, a bored voice saying, Come on, let's finish this and get back to work...

Another voice, amused, rough, guttural. No, this could be fun. Look, you finish up in the tomb. Just tie her hands. I want to see how tough dwarves really are.

The blade had gone away, its owner snorting. You're a twisted one, Thurzen. Alright, have your fun.

Her hands had been grabbed, tied roughly behind her back. Thurzen had turned her over with his boot, so that she was on her back, staring up at him. The half-orc with his crimson robes, his tusked smile, eyes that gleamed with twisted intelligence. He'd reached into his robes and pulled out a small vial, uncorking it, the scent of lantern oil pungent in the dry desert air.

Just you and me, dwarf, he'd breathed, and started pouring the oil, over her body, over her face... she had turned her head, sputtering, twisting as the viscous liquid had run into her nostrils and mouth, but there was no escape. It was all over her face, her hair, her throat. Thurzen had laughed, low and rumbly.

And then he had gestured, and his hand had blazed with flame, and then--

Petra jerks out of her trance-- turning the other way and running, blind and panicked. She runs until she slams into a wall and then stays there, gasping for air, her short calloused fingers clutching at the stone for anything tangible to grab.

Haktres-shakt! Say'ri, hearing a scream that can only be Petra, takes off as fast as her legs will carry her. As she pelts through the courtyard she see's Petra fleeing blindly past her, then Ibrahim blocking the corridor and a number of small floating skulls with fire burning inside their empty jaws. This day just keeps getting better! She pulls up next to Ibrahim, barring the skulls way through to Petra.

"Petra is out of this one. We go in together on three?" Say'ri stays poised on her toes, ready to move forward or strike as appropriate.

Petra remains pressed against the wall, shaking, plagued by memories only she knows.

(For the record, I don't intend to disadvantage the party by making unasked-for Will rolls every single time fire comes up in game. It's just that when I committed to this flaw, I told myself that the first time Petra ran into fire, she was going to potentially have a real negative reaction to it, and I wanted to play her needing to overcome it. It's true I could just do that narratively rather than leave it to the swingy dice, but that seems a bit too easy to me. That said, it's not my intention to put this personal arc above the party's ability to function... but I have every faith in your guys' capabilities here!)

Go for it - I have a similar character who took the Glimpse Beyond story feat. He makes will saves in stressful situations to avoid blacking out and being tormented by his literal inner demons. He's a paladin so he's never failed when it mattered but I agree fully with what you're doing!

If you use a hero point you can get another standard action to strike one. But your excess damage dealt doesn't carry over to other people, otherwise I'd do the same with monsters. Say'ri gets crit by a giant, the damage kills her and Ibrahim. Not cool. :-) Side note--in our Skull and Shackles game, we had a monk that was an old-school Crane Wing guy who got cocky with his dodginess. Crit him with a marsh troll. Good times.

Petra--I'm liking your RP, and I don't think the party is in too much danger. You guys have already neutralized most of the biggest threats. Carry on my wayward dwarf!

The growling stops, and it speaks: That foul creature you slew profaned this holy resting place with its treachery, and those abominations are a result of his schemes. As the last skull falls, Mirri allowed her muscles to relax. What WERE those thin...., she began saying before Say'ri's stern voice whipped the halfling's head up to look at the human woman. Mirri answered her with something between a frown and a smirk. Privately, the halfling had a moment of internal chagrin as she realized she had forgotten all about the screaming, fleeing Petra. Scrapping a bit for shattered bone on the floor with a foot she finally said, ohh..fine...I'll stay here. She then proceeded to search the room, casting a few longing glances into the smiley face room but otherwise obeying Say'ri's directive.

Dang, you finished 'em before I could have my triumphant return! :P

In mind:
Petra's fear becomes a fear of a different stripe as she realizes the voice that speaks to her. She gasps, and-- mentally at least-- throws herself prostrate, supplicant before the heard-but-unseen lord of the dead. "Great Guardian--! I, I will seek to--"

I am scared, o god that I serve, she might say, but Anubis is not one to hold hands as one might with a frightened child. The service of the Guardian of the Tomb is not for those who need comfort or to have their hearts soothed and quieted. The Guardian cares little for the woes of the living: only that the sanctity of the dead be respected and that transgressors of that sanctity be punished. He is not cruel, but neither is he kind.

With a last shudder, Petra wrenches herself free of the fear. She is a sworn servant of the dead and a daughter of Erekrus; she is better than this weakness.

Petra wheels around, eyes fierce behind the keffiyeh. In the old Osiriani tongue, she yells out, "The judgment has been spoken! Your souls will leave this place! I will send you! Begone, abominations and corruptions! You...."

...

... "....you are... already gone," she sticks on in very sheepish Taldane. Aaaaaawkward.

Petra clears her throat. Avoiding the eyes of Say'ri coming her way, Petra simply scurries back to the room and collects her dropped bow. Good thing the keffiyeh hides her blush...

"Ah. Who is hurt," she mumbles from beneath her scarf.

Then she wipes her hands really well.

Petra stands before the grisly little collection, her hand raised clutching the jackal's head amulet she wears. "You who were taken from the rest of death by the foul creature of lies which we slew.... return now to your peace. Your souls I speed to judgment on the scales before great Pharaz-Ma'at, and He Who Ushers You Into Her Presence, the Guardian, to be weighed against the feather of all truth, knowing what you have done both in life and in death. FYI, the stairs lead upstairs.

A large staircase climbs to the second floor from this room. Sand and dust cover the floor, and painted columns stand in all but one of the corners. Pieces of broken wood, shattered pottery, and disintegrating fabric litter the room’s perimeter.

Mirri finds a few items of value, a silver anklet set with tiny gems and an ankh charm worth 150 gp, a tarnished silver serving tray worth 35 gp, and a small ornate vase worth 75 gp.

She also finds a ring, but when she touches it, a strange thing happens:

A ghostly scene superimposes itself over the ruins of the room, as translucent furniture and decorations like potted palm trees and richly upholstered divans waver into existence.

In the center of the room, a ghostly young man clasps the hands of an ethereal young woman. They speak in Ancient Osiriani, but any listener can mysteriously understand them, regardless of language.
I’m so sorry, the young man says. I can’t find the ring I bought you anywhere. I just had it!

It’s all right, my love, the girl replies quietly. It’s not the right time to tell my family anyway.

Come with me, Ariseti! Come across the river where we’ll be safe!

Not just yet, darling. My father says we’ll be safe here. You go, and when all this is over, you can come back for me, and we’ll announce our engagement then.

She pauses, and reaches out to touch the man’s forehead.
Are you feeling all right? You’re burning up!

Mirri stared open-mouthed at the vision as it appeared, her gaping only interrupted by her head swinging occasionally back to the others to determine it they were also seeing the vision. After a brief moment of stunned silence following the vision disappearing, Mirri exclaimed, Wow! What was that? Is that some kinda magic or the dead talkin' to us or what!? The halfling then got a dazed look on her face at put a hand out to the nearby wall. Ooh, don't feel so well. Kinda like a fever or somethin'. Anybody else got that too?

When Mirri complains of feeling unwell Say'ri strides over to her and places a hand on her forehead. "Definitely too hot. I'd say you have a fever Mirri. It might be linked to the ring. Ishia, can you examine it please? Petra - can Anubis help us to cure this or do we need to go the Grand Mausoleum?

After a short pause Say'ri crouches to look Mirri in the eye. "Can you carry on Mirri? If not we can retreat today and Ben can take a look at you. It costs us nothing to leave now - if you are unwell then your safety comes first. Besides" She cracks a grin. "Without you we'd probably all end up down a hole somewhere in the gardens!"

@GM: Don't want to meta-game this....aside from that fever sensation does Mirri have any other symptoms?

Gamer Please read the announcements!

You feel feverish and sick--if not treated, it will be very difficult for you to concentrate and think clearly (you have a souped up version of the Mindfire disease). So currently no penalties or anything, but failed saves will result in Int damage.

Say'ri recalls that Pentheru the Younger had a daughter named Ariseti. Her fiance wanted to elope, but Ariseti demurred, wanting to wait until the “troubles” afflicting the city passed before announcing their engagement. Unfortunately, neither of them survived the plague and the chaos that followed it.

Mirri gives Say'ri a weak smile, uhh...err...well, let's keep goin'. I mean, we maybe killed off most of the problems here. It'd be a shame if someone came along and cleaned the rest of it out. Putting on a braver face she adds, 'sides, you can carry me back if I get too sick!

Let's keep going. Mirri will keep searching to distract herself from how she feels.

Technically, Heal isn't... used to diagnose a disease, which seems weird, and treating it requires 10 minutes. So we'll assume I'll wait til we rest to actually roll a check.

Petra says awkwardly to Ibrahim's attempt at commiseration, "...I am unhurt. Thank you--" and hurriedly moves on to Mirri. "Let me observe you."

She touches her callused fingers to Mirri's forehead, frowning. "We will have to do something about this when we rest tonight."

Mirri flinched slightly as Petra unexpectedly assessed the halfling's condition. When she realizes the dwarven woman didn't mean to strike her, she relaxes and nods glumly before taking a large swig out of her water skin. With a deep breath she resumed looking around.

Recommend we keep to this level and search all the rooms before going upstairs. There appears to be at least one room in the NE section of the house we haven't checked at all yet. Let's continue our counter-clockwise movement.

I was waiting for Ishia!

On the identification: "I think that had best go to you or Mirri." Say'ri comments. "You wear the least armor so you need the protection most."

She looks around once more, clearly not entirely sure about Mirri. "Right, let's continue round the house. Once we get back here we can go up or leave if Mirri is feeling worse. Keep your eyes and ears open everyone!"

Say'ri will lead the way counter-clockwise until we get back to this room with the stairs. Unless Mirri suddenly gets a lot worse in which case Say'ri will cut the day short and get her out of here.

I'm going to push through a couple of those rooms, then. If you want to insert any RP or any reactions or other things to do, please let me know!

Lightning Bolt room

A large tiled pool sits in the center of this chamber, surrounded by sloping tiled floors. A few steps descend into the basin, which has accumulated a deep layer of sand on its bottom. Faded murals on the walls depict scenes of life along a river, with recurring themes of running water and aquatic life running through the artwork. In the northeast corner, a tarnished bronze spigot juts from the wall just above head level. Archways lead north and west, and a stone door stands in the eastern wall.

Ishia determines that the spigots (which still work) cast Create Water at will. One is hot water, the other is cold. Mirri finds nothing of value in this room.

Moving on to the arrow room

A stone privy is built into one wall of this tiny room, and a stone table with a basin stands against the other wall. The floor is covered in broken glass and dead scarab beetles. A headless corpse sits upright on one of the privies.

Heal DC 15:

Examination reveals that the corpse is clearly not ancient—the body is approximately 3 years old.

Mirri finds nothing further of value in this room.

Star room

Hieroglyphs and images of fantastic beings cover the walls of this small room. A small stone shrine, dusty and thoroughly defaced, stands against the eastern wall.

Ancient Osiriani or Knowledge (Religion) 10:
The Ancient Osiriani hieroglyphs on the walls offer praises to Abadar, Pharasma, and Sarenrae and list several common prayers to each. The small altar serves all three deities, though the carvings place Abadar in the most prominent position.

Nothing of (monetary) value here

Division Room
Two stone tables sit against the western wall of this room, while a third occupies the southeastern corner. A small, square wooden butcher’s block stands in the northeast corner, now almost collapsing under its own weight. A stone oven sits in the middle of the north wall. A humanoid skeleton lies beneath the northwestern table, surrounded by smashed crockery. A door to the east and an open doorway to the south exit the room.

A pitted and rusted dagger is still wedged between the skeleton’s ribs. Unlike its companions elsewhere on the estate, this skeleton is lifeless and harmless.

Nothing of value

Smiley face
This dining room is similar to the beheaded room, but it lacks the ghastly tableau and is empty save for dust and sand.

Nothing of value

So, reactions to that info dump, if any, then next?

I'll take 10 on those checks, and Petra will cast detect magic on entering rooms in order to make sure nothing unusual is hiding

Petra is bemused by the corpse still seated as though going about his (?) business. She examines the body with her own head tipped to one side, brows beetling together.

"...this does not date from the plague-deaths. This is more recent... the body has only been here a few years. I cannot imagine someone wandering into this place and needing to... see to nature's urges... and then losing their head. The corpse must have been placed in this position? Who would do such a disrespectful thing? That lying abomination we fought earlier, perhaps." Petra's voice is flat with disapproval. "Perhaps this person's head was harvested for one of the... things... that spat flame."

(The body is no doubt too dessicated to tell much, I imagine, but are there any remains of clothes or anything else identifying?)

As instructed by the tenets of her church, she first tests that no foul undeath animates the body by means of a radiant line of life-energy (disrupt undead) sent into it. Then Petra respectfully repositions the headless corpse, taking out it out from the privy-chamber and, after some hesitation, settling it down into the dry, sand-filled pool. She takes some time to cover the body with that sand, a quick and inelegant burial but the best she can offer under the circumstances. Petra bows her head and intones a prayer to her jackal-headed lord that the owner of this desecrated body can move on, now.

***

In the room with the defaced shrine, Petra makes further noises of disapproval. Abadar is not her god, but he is a very respectable one, appealing to her dwarven sensibilities, and blasphemy is blasphemy all the same. She explains the deities represented here and the prayers listed.

"...my god is a jealous lord and it would not serve me well to recite the prayers of another, but if any of you worship the Lord Abadar, or Pharaz-Ma'at, or Sarenrae, perhaps reciting the words once said to them might ease the desecration of this shrine," she says soberly.

***

Petra grunts at seeing the skeleton. Again she tests the body with a beam of light as white-hot as the desert sun, and then she takes on herself the task of moving the old clatter of bones over to the pool as well, and bundling them together to be also covered with sand. There's another murmur to her god. It matters not to Petra if these were good men or bad, or even crypt robbers in their own right-- her faith demands that she set the dead to rest with respect, as the dignity that all are due.

When these tasks are accomplished, the dwarf places her hands on the small of her back and stretches. "We have stairs leading upwards. We also have whoever it was, outside, who lured us into the maw of the great beast. I suggest upwards."

Say'ri seems uninterested in the taps, preferring to keep her eyes out for anything else unexplained - the headless body certainly counted. It was only after Petra finished her examination that she spoke up. "Those skulls - they must have been attached to bodies at one time or another. I think you're right Petra. Perhaps this was an explorer who wandered into the wrong house? "

*****
In the shrine room she just shakes her head. "No god would reject those who repair a shrine, but I have no words for this." She returns to the room with the taps and fills her bucket with water, before setting to scrubbing at the shrine with a damp rag. She'll try for a few minutes, longer if her ministrations actually make a difference - which I'm not banking on given how long I assume its been.

*****
By the time they return to the room with stairs Say'ri seems resigned rather than sad. "Those creatures that we dealt with have lived here too long - the damage will be forever. Mirri, how do you feel? Given how quiet it is I imagine we've dealt with the worst this place holds but we mustn't push it if you are unwell."

Gamer Please read the announcements!

The desecration is fairly recent (given the age of the house), and Say'ri's efforts do make the shrine seem more presentable. Meanwhile, Petra gives the best burial she can for the corpses you've discovered.

Mirri nods to the others to press on, her condition stable at the moment. The party ascends the stairs to find a balcony overlooking the sandman's lair.

This balcony wraps around a twenty-foot-square opening in the floor, overlooking the inner courtyard below and connecting the rooms of the second floor. Above, a square skylight in the ceiling provides natural light to the ground floor and ventilation for the entire building. To the southwest, two small staircases ascend from a landing on the grand staircase between floors.
Six different sets of doors lead off of this balcony.

I color-coded the rooms for ease of discussion. Which room would you like to search/open first?

"I suggest we keep being systematic. Start with this room here and work around the upper floor. Any objections?" Say'ri gestures to the large room near the stairs, Green and then makes a sweeping gesture clockwise around the floor. So green, yellow etc round to grey.

"This is satisfactory," Petra assents. She checks the doors for magic in a slow scan, and, if finding nothing, waves a hand for the others to proceed, knowing Mirri's eyes are likely to spot any troubles on the doors.
