Round One Continued
Flynn will not know more about the Bad Singer. Firing through the brush and small trees, the Half-Elf Inquisitor misses his arrows shots.
Brandark pushes Abacus through the brush to attack the Bad Singer. The third Dog fails to bite Abacus' heals as the horse passes by.
With spear in hand, the Bad Singer stabs at the big powerful horse as he is driven through difficult terrain. The humanoid grins as he sticks his spear into Abacus.
But Abacus is a Warhorse, and fighting through the pain, pummels the Bad Singer with its hooves. Brandark in turn cleaves the humanoid with his axe. The Bad Singer is no longer grinning.

Abacus took 18 points of damage in the assault.
Shadowmist bites into the fifth Dog, but Stone misses with his Scimitar.
Elektra weaves a spell, a pit opens up beneath the Bad Singer and two of its dogs. The Bad Singer jumps back away from the pit with a, "Whoa!" But his two dogs falls thirty feet into the pit.
The second dog lands hard on its side. It was severely injured from the fall. The third Dog manages to use the sides of the pit to break some of the fall, landing on its paws.

Round Two
Flynn and Brandark will get actions before the Bad Singer. Everyone else go ahead with your actions too.
Garrath Tricks the Giants |
Given that the dogs are now 30' down, Garrath will move around the pit, and use the attacks on the singer. Even with rough terrain, Garrath should be able to cover the distance easily
Brandark Plainswalker |
I see we both forgot the Mounted combat feat, which enables me to avoid the attack. I guess I can say that I didn't expect the attack.
Brandark and Abacus follows him up along as he jumps back swinging with another 2 handed blow.
You hurt my horse

GM Mazra |
@Brandark - Should your character, or anyone's character for that matter, have abilities to avoid damage or change the outcome it is easy enough to retcon the effect. I have enough to keep up with the monsters, so I depend on the players to keep up with their own abilities. If I recall something like Garrath's DR, I will apply it; but even then I tend to forget. As it were, in the situation noted above where Abacus was hit, you would have needed to roll a 34 to avoid the damage. Even a 20 Ride check would not have been successful.
Howling in pain, and startled by the power and ferocity of the Dwarf Cavalier and its steed, the creature thinks about turning tail and running. But those thoughts are short-lived, with a two-handed swing Brandark cleaves into the deformed looking humanoid. Abacus then stomps on the grotesque, rendering it unconscious.
Only pooches 4 & 5 remain.
Garrath Tricks the Giants |
Garrath looks over the corpse with a shrug, "You should not have been hunting such fine animals. You lacked the skills of a real hunter." Not concerned with animals in the bottom of a pit, he turns back towards the big cat and Shalelu.
Flynn Elric |
I might be misreading but combat's over right?
Flynn glances over to Shalelu looking rather angry You idiot, charging off alone. You could have died, if you wanted to help the thing we would have gone with you. Point being you could have died, don't do that again. Think before you act so brashly...The lone wolf dies alone Flynn scolds her complete with finger wagging, a solemn sad look on his face as he turns to head back to the trail. Let's go there's work to be done
Ranger Shalelu |
Yes, combat is over. Elektra's pit spell will wear off, and the dogs in the pit will likewise flee.
Shalelu will look at Flynn, "You're correct. I must remember that I am currently not alone, in contrast to my usual disposition."
Shalelu then looks at Stone, "This big cat is tame, but injured. Could you offer assistance?"
Brandark Plainswalker |
Brandark dismounts, and looks over the poor singer as he mumbles under his breath.
That will be the last time you hurt anyone.
percept: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (17) + 11 = 28
He then looks over Abacus, and then leads him over to stone.
Can you help him he pleads
@GM even if you took my mounted combat roll to avoid the damage, it still would not have worked. I have to exceed the attack roll the bad guy does.
Stone the Blade of Sarenrae |
All thoughs that seek Sarenrae's healing please come to me.
Once all the injured animal and people are close enough Stone release a healing surge.
Channel Energy: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 4, 6) = 17
Ranger Shalelu |
Brandark will notice that the now dead deformed humanoid's spear is of high quality, and its belt is intriguing. It was carrying a blanket with patches sown into it.
When Shalelu sees this she will exclaim, "These are Black Arrow patches. The Black Arrows would not give a way their patches. They are hard earned. I fear this thing had them as trophies."
The Firepelt starts acting frantically, as if it wants to tell you something, or lead you somewhere.
Garrath Tricks the Giants |
Garrath wheels on Flynn, "She moved to rescue a wounded animal which is what she does. And she wasn't alone, we were all there to cover her back, which we did. Which we've been doing since Sandpoint, where we faced off against the minions of Lamashtu, where we faced ghouls, and hauntings. So don't be so quick to preach about being a lone wolf, or do you forget you going off on your own in the town? With no mention of where you were going or doing? Nobody hesitated to follow her lead, because that's what we do when someone sees a need to do something. There are times for action, and times for talking, and that was time for action. What would have happened to the cat if we'd have hesitated? "
Garrath turns away and moves towards the fallen humanoid, but seeing the firepelt, moves to the animal with a hand outstretched, non threateningly for the animal to sniff "There you go, what is it you know?
Stone the Blade of Sarenrae |
Stone will put a hand on Flynn's shoulder.
Flynn Elric |
There's a difference Garrath, I'm trained to operate alone, and i avoid making or allowing emotional connections, if i die it doesn't matter...I'm not saying we avoid helping, just that we be a smart about it and think things through.Charging into battle is not always the way, I would have suggested we help either way. Now let's go save the Black arrow's shall we? Flynn Keeps his voice stern
Elektra Stardancer |
Elektra will quickly check the items for their properties in concert with her winged friend.
Spellc: 1d20 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 18 + 2 = 26Belt
Spellc: 1d20 + 18 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 18 + 2 = 23Spear
Garrath Tricks the Giants |
"And Shalelu has traveled these wood, alone. Stop making judgments on others abilities when you have no idea about them. Hesitation before rendering aid can be as harmful as action. If we'd have stopped to talk it over, the hunter would have reached the cat before us, and most likely have died." Garrath follows the Firepelt, looking over his shoulder, "Now should we follow the cat now, or would you like to discuss it while it gets out of range?"
Stone the Blade of Sarenrae |
That's enough. We all want to work for the greater good and keep each other safe as well. We can only do that if we work together. Shalelu is a vary good ranger and we will follow her lead but if she goes off on her own we can't help her. And she can't help us. Stone will remount his horse and follow Shalelu.
Brandark Plainswalker |
Shaking his head at the light bickering.
Enough, we have all made our points, so let us not belabor it.
Stone, my thanks again for healing my friend.
With that, he will pick up what Elektra tells him to, and strap it to their pack horse.
He will then mount up and catch up to the party.
GM Mazra |
OK. I didn't wait. With the weekend coming, I wanted to get this started.
The Firepelt Cougar leads the party through the forest to a wider trail. Then the trail to a remote farm.
Map up called the Graul Farm. There are many maps on this one link. The top is an overall view of the farm. I have just the horses representing the party due to the small scale. Obviously, zooming in will help.
Coming out of the woods leading into the farm are two deformed humanoids. One from the front and one from behind, dropping out of the trees that overhang the narrow trail.
The Firepelt, Shalelu, Brandark and Garrath need a DC 16 Perception Check to notice the one from the front. Flynn, Elektra and Stone need a DC 26 Perception Check to notice the one from behind. This will determine if you can react in the Surprise Round.
Firepelt Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Shalelu Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31
The Firepelt does not notice the front one coming out of the trees, but Shalelu reacts.

Garrath's Initiative: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
Elektra's Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Shalelu senses movement in the trees above, and steers her mount away from the threat.
If you made your Perception check, go ahead and let me know your Surprise Action before we begin Round One.
Garrath Tricks the Giants |

Garrath continues down the path, not seeing the humanoid.
Brandark Plainswalker |

Brandark reins in Abacus, and unlimbers his lance.
Stand there, and identify He yells.
I don't know if Elektra was able to make that con belt for me yet. If not, I would like the belt of STR.

Surprise Round
Garrath doesn't notice the deformed humanoid dropping out of the trees with a nasty looking hook in his hand.
Shalelu senses the movement, and steers her steed out of the way.
The first Deformed Humanoid drops from a tree limb, and hooks Garrath with an ugly weapon.
1 Deformed Humanoid's Hook: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 251d10 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Distracted by the first Deformed Humanoid falling out of the trees, the second Mr. Ugly drops from the trees and attacks Stone. Its wicked hook cuts into the Cleric's back, just missing a vulnerable point.

Garrath takes 11 - 3, or 8 points of damage. Stone just missed taking a wicked 47 point strike, receiving instead 16 points of damage.
Brandark reins in Abacus, while he unlimbers his Lance.
The Firepelt ignores the attackers and continues toward a barn looking structure.

Ranger Shalelu |
Shalelu attempts to quickly dismount her steed. She smoothly lands on her feet, firing two arrows at the first Deformed Humanoid. Even though the humanoid is hideously deformed, it is agile and ducked the first arrow. Shalelu's aim was simply way off on her second shot.

Round One
After the surprise attack, Garrath gathers himself, but then goes into a rage. He drops off his mount and slashes into the deformed humanoid.
These are a Giant subclass.
Shalelu quickly dismounts her horse and fires two arrows, missing her target with both.
The first Deformed Humanoid uses its wicked hook against the big Shoanti Barbarian, hooping and hollering as he goes. Its hook cuts twice into Garrath.
The second Deformed Humanoid doesn't even scratch Stone's armor.
Shadowmist was unable to get a solid strike in against the second Deformed Humanoid. But Stone was far more successful, getting a critical slash with his Scimitar.
Elektra begins to weave a spell.
Flynn slings himself off his horse, drawing his Scimitar, slashing into the Deformed Humanoid. I wasn't sure which one you attacked, so I put your token on the second one. I can retcon this, if you wished to attack the first one.
Brandark, with Lance in hand, steers Abacus into a charge against the Deformed Humanoid, skewering the hideous being. Abacus was unable to bite the monstrosity.
(I question whether Brandark had enough room to mount a charge. I applied the damage indicated. From the current starting position, I wouldn't thinks so. But I guess that Brandark could have steered Abacus to get more room before the charge. The question is, is that within the rules. Honestly, I am not 100% sure.)

The requirement is 10' for a charge, and the map wasn't clear on distance.
The map provided wasn't on a grid. Scale was likely too small. It was close enough to give it to you. I do think the rule is broken. When you think of a typical joust, you would need more than 10 feet to get up to speed on a mount. 10 feet is plenty on foot. But on a mount...eh. But it is the rules.
