GM Mazra |
I am taking poison to the discussion thread.
Poison is one area that was broken in 3.5, and it is still broke in Pathfinder. However, this article helps:
I Drank What? An FAQ on Poison.
Garrath had to make two saving throws from back to back spider bites. Scenario B in the article is applicable.
Garrath's save from the second bite does not miraculously cure the effects of the failed first bite's saving throw.
Comments?

I hate to say this, but I happen to agree with what Mazra is saying.
Flynn Elric |
my ability to think at the moment is a bit limited due to a massive blaring headache but i have to agree as well.
Garrath Tricks the Giants |
Not the initial effects, but the ongoing effects is the way I read that. So the initial bite has its immediate effect (failed save) and then second bite has no effect (saved). Because the save clears the +2 difficulty to the ongoing effects, it counters both ongoing.
That's the way I read it. So he'd take whatever damage was caused by the first bite, none from the second and no ongoing damage, if there is any? No big deal either way, just wanted to know so I can make the save throw if necessary.
GM Mazra |
Like I said, it was broke in 3.5 and the way the rule was written in the Core Rulebook was broken too.
"Making your initial saving throw against a poison means stacking does not occur—the poison did not affect you and any later doses are treated independently."
The key phrase is that "any later dose are treated independently."
The initial saving throw of a second bite, if made, does not stop the continual effects of the first failed saving. However, it does end the +2 penalty if Garrath is bit a third time.
Now, let's say that Garrath failed both saving throws. Then he would only need to roll one saving throw to potentially end both ongoing effects in the next round.
Garrath Tricks the Giants |
Okay, got it, I'll roll another saving throw before his next action. :) That is just clumsy wording all the way around.
Flynn Elric |
i've been purged of this foul disease, what's going on ? Still talking about this poison situation?
Brandark Plainswalker |
Merry Christmas to all.
Garrath Tricks the Giants |
My apologies for the delay, and curses for Paizo's eating my post to say I'd be on vacation away from my computer for a week.
And Happy Holidays! (since I missed Xmas here :( )
Garrath Tricks the Giants |
Sorry for the delay, I got the flu that dehydrated me enough I spent two days in the hospital. On the mend now.

Grabbed but not grappled? So Garrath can still attack?
GM Mazra |
The additional rolls were to start a grapple as normal. See below. Below is the overly complex rules.
Grab (Ex)If a creature with this special attack hits with the indicated attack (usually a claw or bite attack), it deals normal damage and attempts to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. The creature has the option to conduct the grapple normally, or simply to use the part of its body it used in the grab to hold the opponent. If it chooses to do the latter, it takes a –20 penalty on its CMB check to make and maintain the grapple, but does not gain the grappled condition itself.
A successful hold does not deal any extra damage unless the creature also has the constrict special attack. If the creature does not constrict, each successful grapple check it makes during successive rounds automatically deals the damage indicated for the attack that established the hold. Otherwise, it deals constriction damage as well (the amount is given in the creature’s descriptive text).
Creatures with grab receive a +4 bonus on combat maneuver checks made to start and maintain a grapple.
Unless otherwise noted, grab works only against opponents no larger than the same size category as the creature.
If You Are Grappled:If you are grappled, you can attempt to break the grapple as a standard action by making a combat maneuver check (DC equal to your opponents CMD; this does not provoke an attack of opportunity) or Escape Artist check (with a DC equal to your opponent’s CMD). If you succeed, you break the grapple and can act normally. Alternatively, if you succeed, you can become the grappler, grappling the other creature (meaning that the other creature cannot freely release the grapple without making a combat maneuver check, while you can). Instead of attempting to break or reverse the grapple, you can take any action that doesn’t require two hands to perform, such as cast a spell or make an attack or full attack with a light or one-handed weapon against any creature within your reach, including the creature that is grappling you. See the grappled condition for additional details. If you are pinned, your actions are very limited. See the pinned condition in Appendix 2 for additional details.

Had a major issue at work that's had me log over 200 hours in the last two weeks. Sorry for my absence. I'll post something tonight, since it looks like things will be normal again.
Brandark Plainswalker |
Sorry if i am holding things up. Just got back from vegas, and getting myself unjetlagged. Will post something tomorrow.
Garrath Tricks the Giants |
Sorry about being spotty lately, work blew up on me, to the point I may be looking elsewhere, so if anyone knows of any IT positions open near Milwaukee, WI USA, let me know :). I'll try to be more regular.
Flynn Elric |

Things should level out for me after this week. The last full project upgrade for me is getting done. After that it's mostly maintenance and clean up projects, which don't have as tight a deadline. The other thing that's been eating up time is this:
https://twitch.tv/42lounge
I'm GMing a livecast game on Mondays, so there's been a LOT of set up and marketing going into that as well. Now that we've got a few under our belts, that is also leveling off. Stick a two year old into the mix and you can see why I've been nuts. The show is on Mondays 7pm-11pm(ish) US Central Time. We actually have the chat do some gambling, and be able to use winnings to give inspiration to the characters. Tune in if you can, and mention this game and I'll have our moderator hand out some extra "coin" for you. :D
Brandark Plainswalker |
Man it sounds like you got yourself a full plate. :)
Garrath Tricks the Giants |
Way more than full, but leveling off.
Brandark Plainswalker |
Sorry, life attacked me this weekend.
Garrath Tricks the Giants |
Had another livecast last night, and had a blast. Some timely inspiration given from the viewers to the cast saved their bacon! :) If you get a chance, tune in on Mondays.
Flynn Elric |
quick update on my part
just going to attack,
i'll post later, dealing with some things at the moment.
Brandark Plainswalker |
just got mugged by life. One more weekend of not being able to log in, then it should be sorted.
Garrath Tricks the Giants |
Flynn, there was no offense taken, that's just Garrath being growly, especially if someone insults a friend, and ESPECIALLY if that friend is female. All in character and all good! I'm actually kind of liking that Flynn's abrasive. Garrath's just going to bonk him on the head every once in a while and say "quit it" ;)
Flynn Elric |
good, i was just being cautious...
Flynn can be cold and direct, despite understanding people he has issues forming any non professional relationships.
anyway good to know
Brandark Plainswalker |
Will not be around for a couple of days on monday. please bot as needed.
Garrath Tricks the Giants |
My computer got hacked and much of my google drive and onedrive were torn up. I lost almost all of my Pathfinder stuff, including Garrath and Ragnir's information. I'm in the process of restoring that all now. Sorry for the delays this has caused.
Brandark Plainswalker |
As I said in the Giantslayer game.
I hope that you can recover your characters. :(
Garrath Tricks the Giants |
Life's still kinda kicking me in the crotch, Fridays and Mondays being the worst, but I just had a major breakthrough on my one troublesome project. Hopefully that will give me some breathing room.
That being said, I was able to recover the characters. Quick question Mazra, would the hide shirts be able to be cleaned sufficiently to wear them, and would one fit Garrath?
Brandark Plainswalker |
I will get the treasure sheet caught up on friday.
i got a lot of farm related tasks that i have to go help a sibling out with.
sorry it has taken a couple of days, but at work on tablet.
only so much i can do.
Garrath Tricks the Giants |
That's awesome, I didn't realize it was that long!
Flynn Elric |
beginning of the school year, stuffs gonna be slow for me for a few days. Things get hectic for me this time of the year
